Extron Introduces 800-Watt ENERGY STAR Qualified Power Amplifiers Extron has just raised the bar much higher with its new XTRA Series XPA 4002 two-channel power amplifier, a 1U, convection-cooled (a first in our industry at this performance) amplifier that delivers 400-watts rms per channel, and is available in low impedance and 70 volt versions. The XPA 4002 is an ENERGY STAR qualified amplifier with a highly efficient, advanced Class D amplifier design. It also features patented CDRS (Class D Ripple Suppression) technology that provides a smooth audio waveform and an improvement in signal fidelity over conventional Class D amplifiers. The XPA 4002 is half the size of comparable amplifiers, conserving rack space and weighing only 9 lbs (4 kg). The XPA 4002 features an auto power-down feature that automatically places the amplifier into standby after a period of inactivity, and consumes 30 watts or less when idle and less than 1 watt in standby mode. It also has an ultra low inrush current draw to prevent power circuit overload that occurs when multiple amplifiers are switched on simultaneously. This feature eliminates the need for power sequencing in systems with multiple amplifiers in large centralized equipment racks, and prevents other equipment from experiencing power interruption from associated power surges. Additionally, the XPA 4002 amplifier features very low thermal dissipation under full load, which keeps racks and equipment cabinets cool. Blue core light gives off whites like a laser light source rather than a bluish-hue like a traditional mercury lamp. Effeciency-wise, the projectors use up to 90 percent less light source power consumption. BenQ also claims their blue core light engine uses a so-called SmartEco Advanced technology that optimizes the units’ light source systems to deliver 20,000 hours of lamp use (similar to the life of an LED) and 2,000 ANSI lumens brightness. They are both single-chip DLP projectors. Spec’d at an 80,000:1 contrast ratio (hmm…), the LX60ST projector is XGA (1024×768), while the LW61ST projector is WXGA (1280×800). Both have a 0.6/0.49 short-throw projection lens, use less than a half-watt of power in stand-by mode and 250 watts of power when on, and offer VGA and HDMI inputs. The Planar Mosaic has three flat panel tiles, including a new square LCD, and is specifically targeted at the architectural wall coverings market. If you have no idea what we’re talking about, a prototype exhibit of the Planar Mosaic video wall system will debut Feb. 16 through March 30 at the Cristin Tierney Gallery in New York City in conjunction with video artist Yorgo Alexopoulos. Planar says the Mosaic is the only video wall system that allows designers to integrate three different LCD tile sizes and shapes — including a truly square LCD tile dubbed the Planar Salvador, 1:1 aspect ratio tile measuring 15.6 inches (39.5 cm) on each side. The Planar Vincent (48 inches / 122 cm wide) and the Planar Pablo (40 inches / 103 cm wide) are both rectangular LCD tiles. Utilizing the Mosaic Ensemble software and hardware, the tiles can be rotated at virtually any angle and mounted in any position, encouraging designers to experiment. The Planar Mosaic video wall system features LED backlit displays that consume less energy than traditional LCD displays and offer an installation depth of less than 4 inches (10.16 cm), which is compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
