Latest headlines: Gary Kayye with part 1 of a series on InfoComm 2021, Scott Tiner on AVIXA’s inclusive language guide, plus the latest news

Today’s newsletter is a little bit AVIXA-themed. That’s a good thing! As InfoComm is coming up, I know you’re all getting your plans together to attend in person (or virtually). It should come as no shock to you, but rAVe will be there!

Anyway.

Gary Kayye wrote part 1 of a series about his expectations of InfoComm. What’s it going to be like? What should we expect? What should AVIXA expect? He shares his thoughts on all of the above.

Next, Scott Tiner’s column is all about AVIXA’s recently released Inclusive Language Guide. I agree with his thoughts wholeheartedly. If we are going to be serious about embracing the future as an industry, there are things we can do to ensure that AV is a safe place to work for all. Read Scott’s piece. Share AVIXA’s guide with your co-workers, friends, family, pets! There’s only one thing better than learning — and that’s sharing what we’ve learned!

Finally, I want to draw attention to Tom Kehr’s latest column. If you’re like me and are currently studying to take the CTS exam (I’ll be taking mine at InfoComm, by the way!), you’ll know that Ohm’s Law is one thing everyone advises that you study up on. This article really breaks it down — and gives real-world examples! Big thanks to Tom for helping me (and I’m sure some of you) to get to know the electricity part of AV a little bit better.

Alright, I’ve given you enough to ponder — also enjoy Barco’s Q1 and Q2 results, a new acquisition for Zoom and new products from Kramer, Extron and more.

Bye!

— Steph Beckett

COLUMNS

+ Part 1: A Simple Expectation of InfoComm 2021 [Gary Kayye]

don’t think we need to review how and why we came to where we are with this year’s event being in late October in Orlando, Florida but, it’s worth noting how this year’s show will — more than any show in the history of our industry — steer the next two years of our businesses. With that in mind, and a lot of still-unknowns due to the brutally obvious, I have decided to publish a series of recommendations to help us all get the most of our InfoComm 2021 experience — and these will serve both the exhibitors (manufacturers) and the integrators as well as systems designers and distributors, too!

+ AVIXA Delivers an Inclusive Language Guide [Scott Tiner]

In March of this year, AVIXA released an Inclusive Language Guide through its Diversity Council, supported by TAD and Audinate. I highly recommend you take the time to read the guide: You can find it here. Better yet, I highly recommend you print it off and hang copies of it around your offices, workshops and workspaces. The guide is only nine pages long; the most critical pieces of it are only five or so pages long. Email the link (and this blog) to your entire organization. It is very well written, and very clear about the suggestions that it puts forward.

+ A, E, I, V, R and Ohms (And P and W) [Tom Kehr]

Alphabet Soup and Math. Not your favorites, I know. I didn’t get all this at once, but I’ll share some things that helped me immensely. First, let’s sort out these letters. Circuits have properties, and we use values to quantify those properties. There are different symbols used depending on whether we’re talking about the properties or the values, and it’s confusing when we mix two symbols interchangeably (as often happens). An engineer I respect once said, “you never use a symbol for a quantity in a formula when you are actually solving for a variable.”
