Latest headlines: Michael Boreham on hybrid learning, Jeff Hastings on touch-free interactivity in retail, plus news from ClearOne and more

October 7, 2020 | Volume: 18 | Issue: 37

It’s been a busy and interesting October so far, and I’m excited to bring some of the AV highlights to your attention this week. For one, we are so, so glad to welcome a new president and chief operating officer to rAVe, Mandy Beckner! Mandy comes to us from 20 years at AVIXA, and we know she’s going to do amazing things for our company and help us continue bringing you all the best news, content and reporting. I can firmly say that we are lucky to have her! Find the story below.

Next, I was really interested to see the news that distributor Stampede is rebranding as Exertis ProAV. (Exertis and Stampede are already owned by DCC Technology, but you might’ve seen that Mersive appointed DCC as its distributor recently too.) So no more cowboy hats and cowgirl plaid and extravagant Western-themed InfoComm booths? I’d imagine so. What’s not changing about Stampede it seems, though, is its unique marketing: “Exertis, the new name is here to stay. The old-time Western ads, they’re goin’ away. Gonna let those horses ride into the sunset, cause when you roll with Exertis, this is what you’re gonna get.”

Going to go ride my horses into the sunset as you catch the rest of this week’s ProAV newsletter — as always, let us know what stands out to you this week.

COLUMNS

+ Hybrid Learning: A Key Investment for Universities in Response to COVID-19 [Michael Boreham]

Make no mistake: COVID-19 has caused incredible disruption to higher education. As campus living is stripped from the usual buzz of freshers’ week, students are understandably concerned about how university is set to become a not-so-memorable experience. With physical lectures restricted, a 10 p.m. curfew on nightlife, and all sporting events canceled, students are either pushing back against paying full tuition fees or deferring their studies entirely. For many colleges and universities, the drop in revenue is likely to be painful, with most relying on charges levied on students to remain financially secure.

+ The Touch-Free Future of Interactivity in Retail [Jeff Hastings]

What’s old is new again, at least as it relates to interactive digital signage at retail. Years ago, when touch screen interactivity approached mainstream adoption in retail, customers were adapting to a new workflow. The progression of customers understanding, trusting and ultimately using touch-interactive signage took time. Fast forward to retail’s current pandemic recovery effort, and we’re at a similar crossroads.
