How are you doing, #Hometweeps? The news about many companies dropping out of CEDIA Expo 2021 is disheartening, but don’t let it bring you down. THE rAVe Agency will still be there on the show floor to bring you live coverage of those exhibitors who do attend. If you didn’t get a chance to view it, Gary Kayye got to speak with Jason McGraw, Emerald’s CEDIA Expo VP, about rules and regulations at the show. Check it out to get some answers to many of the questions you’ve been asking!

Our first piece this week, “Holding The Line: Part 2,” is the second of Lee Distad’s columns on facing unreasonable client requests. This piece takes a deeper dive into the reality of client communication; will they sell you their story or will you sell them yours? There is deep importance in expressing both your competence and expertise, as this justifies your rates and stakes a claim against impossible requests. You need to know in detail what it takes to get a job done so you can confidently sell your story to the client — and get paid fairly.

Our second column discusses crucial considerations for helping clients design their own studio in order to produce professional-looking content. From pixel density to cameras to lighting, you can help clients build a studio destined for quality content. “Storm The Studio” is Mark Coxon’s refresher on just how to make video look professional — because we can’t help clients if we don’t know how to do it ourselves. Also, this piece mentions Star Wars, so you know it’s cool.

This newsletter is packed with exciting news, new Rants & rAVes episodes, industry announcements and much more. Find it all below, and I’ll see you next time!

COLUMNS

+ Holding The Line: Part 2 [Lee Distad]

As I am sometimes painfully reminded, there’s a difference between a hobby and business. Specifically this: If it costs you money, it’s a hobby. If it makes you money, it’s a business. As I pointed out last time, the direct approach when a prospective client expects you to charge less for your labor is to say no. When told no, one of two things will happen: The client will either walk, or they will talk (negotiate with you).

+ Storm The Studio [Mark Coxon]

These are all areas where an integrator can add a ton of value to their clients because, as professionals, we know things like lighting, cameras, microphones, acoustics and proper video backdrops can be challenging to design and implement to say the least. Creating a professional-level video production takes a lot more than just adding a camera and a screen.
