Latest headlines: Bob Snyder on Microsoft as an audio company, Jeff Hastings on the demise of DSE/Exponation, plus news from Rentman!

30 September 2020 | Volume: 16 | Issue: 18

Hello rAVe Europe readers, and welcome to the latest edition of our newsletter! If you haven’t taken a good look around here recently, you’ll see that we gave this newsletter a bit of a makeover — but only because we wanted to make it extra clear that it belongs with the other newsletters we offer at rAVe [PUBS]. Just like last time, most of the news links to stories we publish on our Europe microsite on rAVePUBS.com, but as I told you last time — some things never change. Bob Snyder is still here, and he refuses to let me get too American or say “y’all” too much. Don’t miss his column below, also, on Microsoft because the company does not want you to forget that it does audio!

Once you’re through giving the columns a good look-through, you’ll see that the news below is separated into a few different sections. Product News, Industry News and Case Studies are all news within Europe, but Technology to Watch is all about news from outside Europe. However, it’s still significant enough to warrant coverage and inclusion within the newsletter.

Also, like last time, we have a ton of news included here, with the most significant news being the cancellation of DSE — which, of course, came with the report that Exponation filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy. I’ve talked in the past about how this type of information is my least favorite to report on. But things move on, and we included quotes from a few different parties — all have incredibly positive outlooks about the future. Digital signage isn’t going to go away, primarily because businesses rely on it to spread information during COVID-19. I believe that there will eventually be another expo, maybe not with the same name, but hopefully with the same amount of heart. The industry has a tremendous capability of picking itself up when things are down, so I’m excited to see what’s next and then tell you all about it.

Cheers!

— Steph Beckett

COLUMNS

+ “We’re Also an Audio Company,” Says Microsoft [Bob Snyder]

From “Hey, Cortana” to cloud-enabled interactive sound for HoloLens to Windows Sonic (Windows 10 comes with support for virtual surround sound), Microsoft invests heavily in research on audio. And the company is convinced the ProAV market fails to recognize this.

+ Esports Education Investments Endure and Grow Amid Budget Restrictions [Chris Bull]

Throughout 2020, esports has been one of the most notable champions amid stay-at-home orders and social distancing policies. The industry has thrived, but it has certainly changed course from its pre-COVID trajectory, and even more so for its application in K-12 and higher education.

+ Processing the Demise of DSE [Jeff Hastings]

Earlier this week, DSE show organizers confirmed what many of us had suspected for months — that DSE would not happen as planned in 2020. What came as a bit of a surprise was Exponation’s entry into Chapter 7 bankruptcy — such an abrupt and terminal move by the organization that lifted up our industry for so many years.
