Marketing AV
By Mark Coxon rAVe Blogger
Just about every week I do a Selling AV podcast, (shameless plug) but I thought I’d turn my attention to Marketing AV for a moment.
It’s no secret that there has been a large amount of evolution in the AV industry over the last several years. Of course, as with any industry steeped in technology, that is to be expected to a certain degree. Technology is an industry that demands that companies keep up or drop out.
AV however has seen some unique challenges as technology has changed. Products are becoming simpler to set up, easier to procure, and cheaper to buy. The average consumer is fairly tech savvy, carrying a computer in their pocket everywhere they go. Many tasks that required professional training and inside knowledge yesterday can be done quickly and easily by the average end user today.
Given all this, it seems that the need to market the advantages of hiring a team of technology professionals is higher than ever.
But how do you market an industry?
If you are a technology marketing professional, you know that it’s hard enough to market an integration firm or the newest AV products and accessories. Even with the specific unique selling propositions of the product or service, it can be hard. Now imagine having to market an industry in general.
I have seen a few examples of marketing whole industries as of late but most are product-centric. California had one around cheese, Florida had one about orange juice, and of course the dairy farmers had “Got Milk?”
AV is a service industry though, and the only campaign I can remember that would be similar to promoting professional services was by the National Association of Realtors promoting hiring a realtor. The bad news is that this type of consumer driven campaign is very expensive.
The good news is that I believe that we are finding ways to promote the industry as a whole, and some of those ways may not be immediately recognized as traditional marketing, but they create the same results none the less.
I think the easiest place to start when looking at marketing an industry is to look to our trade associations. CEDIA recently announced that they have “created a new set of tools to help integrators market their certifications to both homeowners and to their fellow industry professionals.” Marketing the value of hiring certified professionals is certainly a good start.
InfoComm has also had success with this strategy it would seem. According to the breakdown of the attendees of the InfoComm show earlier this year, 41 percent of the attendees at the show were technology managers and end users, with a large amount of these coming to the show for certifications.
If you can convince homeowners, tech managers, and end users that certifications are valuable then odds are they will hire certified professionals when they have the opportunity.
For anyone who thinks that certifying tech managers and end users may actually hurt the industry by creating a DIY force out there in the business world, let me offer this. Most technology managers, even if they hold a CTS certification, do not have the manpower to handle substantial AV projects on their own. Odds are, they will need to hire someone to manage those projects and their implementation. If the tech manager and end user value the certifications enough to invest in them themselves, it would only be natural to assume that they will be more in tune with the advantages of hiring certified professionals as well. I would also argue that AV education allows tech managers and end users to write better RFPs and that their basic understanding of AV systems and their intricacies would dissuade them from value engineering every project to the lowest common denominator.
Outside of the trade associations, we also have some great buying groups in AV like PSNI and USAV. These groups are more than a way for integration firms to leverage buying power with top tier manufacturers. If you take a look at a group like PSNI for instance, they recently acquired AV industry marketing guru Hailey Klein to help market that group. PSNI helps promote the use of high quality products and also help regional integrators leverage the power of other firms in the network to increase their footprint to support clients with multiple locations. From an end user perspective, this establishes confidence and loyalty to firms that do well as they can handle projects all over without having to have brick and mortar offices in every state. Promoting end user confidence and loyalty? That sounds like industry marketing to me.
Of course we can’t just look to others to market the industry for us.
We need to be able to articulate the advantages that certified professionals bring to the table to our potential clients. This is one reason that CEDIA has also created “marketing collateral that outlines why a homeowner should hire a CEDIA Certified professional.” I think this is helpful, especially because many small installation firms do not have marketing departments, and many times are run by talented technology professionals who may have no background in sales or marketing themselves.
Actions always speak louder than words.
Those of us in any customer facing role are on the front lines of the war for the hearts and minds of our clients.
The industry could spend millions marketing CTS certifications, but if CTS certified professionals don’t represent themselves in a professional way, or don’t deliver on the promise of increased quality, then its all for naught.
I have always tried to be prepared for customer meetings and provide the best advice possible. However, I will share that ever since I added the CTS-D and CTS-I initials to my business card, I take that responsibility all the more seriously. My performance is a reflection on the certification itself, and if I want people to value my investment in the credentials, then I need to make sure that I always deliver on that promise.
At the end of the day, marketing an industry is hard work. It takes the combined effort of our industry associations, buying groups, manufacturers and integrators. It also hinges on the ability to deliver on the promises all that marketing makes.

Prysm Activates Co-browsing, Wireless Screen Sharing with Google Cast and Annotation Prysm today unveiled its Summer ’17 software release featuring the general availability of its co-browsing functionality wireless screen sharing with Google Cast and a refreshed annotation experience. Today’s announcement supports the company’s commitment to provide enterprises with the right tools and experiences to drive employee efficiency and productivity.
Specifics of the summer ’17 release include:
- Co-browsing experience: Short for collaborative browsing, this feature enables multiple people in disparate locations to launch and interact with multiple browser sessions simultaneously. Using the group participation function, the owner of the browsing session can enable other project participants to take control of the session, even passing over the controls of an authenticated application, as long as the owner is still logged into the Prysm project. For enhanced data security, when a presenter leaves a workspace or toggles off group participation, the content the co-browser pointed to is no longer available to workspace participants.
- Wireless screen sharing with Google Cast: Along with Apple AirPlay, Prysm customers can now wirelessly share content and screens using Google Cast. Users can enable their Google Chrome browser to share a single Chrome browser tab or the entire desktop. The new feature also enables the ability to share up to four wireless devices simultaneously, within the same workspace, or the ability to switch between four wireless devices in Prysm Go, in addition to wired sources.
- New annotation experience: An update to one of Prysm’s most popular features, the company has refreshed its annotations to include:
- Real-time smoothing for more polished mark-ups
- Easy mistake correction and sketch retouching with new undo/redo functionality
- Quick erase strokes through a single tap
According to the Wainhouse Research product review, “Evaluation of the Prysm Solution – New Features and Functions,” co-browsing will provide a more feature-rich browsing experience to remote users. As an added bonus, it also securely stores user-specific, site-specific cookies within the Prysm Cloud. Additionally, the newly added wireless presentation capability makes it quick and easy to bring live sources, including personal user / BYO content (e.g., from mobile devices), into the Prysm experience – without the need for an external wireless presentation system.

TASCAM’s US-1×2 Interface Delivers Pro-Quality Mobile RecordingThe newest member of TASCAM‘s U.S. series of USB 2.0 recording interfaces, the US-1×2 delivers high-quality, 24-bit, 96 kHz desktop recording at an amazingly low price point. An excellent choice for singer/songwriters, podcasters and small home studios, the compact US-1×2 interface is highly portable and can be USB bus-powered for mobile operation with a Mac or Windows laptop. A secondary 5 VDC mini-USB power input is provided for iOS devices and for standalone operation in practice sessions.
The US-1×2 can record from virtually any source thanks to its selection of inputs. The unit’s XLR microphone input employs TASCAM’s high-end Ultra-HDDA mic preamp, which uses discrete components and features an impressive -125 dBu EIN rating and 101 dB signal-to-noise ratio, meaning the noise level is so low it’s almost inaudible. The Ultra-HDDA preamp’s 57 dB gain range and the interface’s switchable +48V phantom power make the US-1×2 a great choice for use with almost any type of microphone, including dynamic, condenser or ribbon mics.
Input 2 can be switched between front- and rear-panel jacks. The front panel sports a switchable, 1/4-inch line/instrument input that enables recording a mono line-level signal (say, from a synth or mixer) or capturing a guitar or electric bass without needing a direct box. On the unit’s rear, a pair of RCA line inputs admit signals from stereo consumer audio devices, such as tape decks and media players.
Stereo line-level outputs are provided on RCA connectors, and the line outputs and 1/4-inch stereo headphone output have independent output level controls. The headphone out is plenty loud, thanks to an 18 mW/channel amplifier. Front-panel LEDs indicate signal present, peak/clip, phantom power active, and USB active.
Zero-latency direct monitoring can be enabled with a rear-panel switch or in the included Settings Panel software for Mac and Windows. The Settings Panel also accesses the stereo/mono input monitor, input mute, and audio source output.
As with other US-series interfaces, the US-1×2 boasts an attractive industrial design. The new interface is housed in a black powder-coated metal chassis with TASCAM’s unique, detachable Bio-Cell side panels, which angle the interface from the desktop for easier access.
The US-1×2 is class compliant for macOS and is compatible with Windows PCs using an easily installed ASIO driver. You also can record and play back with iOS devices such as an iPhone or iPad, using an Apple Camera Connection Kit. Steinberg’s Cubase LE DAW for macOS and Windows and Cubasis LE DAW for iOS are included free so you can start recording immediately.
The US-1×2 USB audio interface is shipping for $99. Here are the details. Leave a Comment

tvONE Ships ONErack Dual-Redundant, Hot-Swappable Power SupplytvONE is now shipping its Dual-Redundant, Hot-Swappable power supply, an accessory for its popular ONErack, a universal racking mounting solution with power and cooling.
tvONE says the design converts randomly sized, externally powered devices from any manufacturer into slide-in modules that can be installed quickly, cleanly and serviced easily. The Dual-Redundant-power supply is Hot-Swappable, and removes a potential point of failure in racks used for mission critical installations. In addition to reliability, this new power option adds surge protection, DC power conditioning and load sharing to the ONErack solution.
The ONErack chassis is available in 4RU, 5RU and 6RU and can hold up to 16 modules with up to two voltage selectors each. When using the ONErack power supply, each voltage selector can provide selectable power at 5v, 7.5v, 9v, 12v, 13.5, 18v, 24v, up to 35 watts. A pass through is available for custom power sources. Each ONErack chassis can include one or more 250 watt power supplies or the new 450 watt dual-redundant hot-swappable power supply that can feed additional chassis to allow for a clean power solution for all mounted devices. Close the front of your ONErack with a fan cover and keep it all cool. Mount 64 devices in just 5RU, powered and cooled.

For all you REGULAR readers of rAVe ProAV Edition out there, hopefully you enjoyed another opinion-packed issue!
For those of you NEW to rAVe, you just read how we are — we are 100 percent opinionated. We not only report the news and new product stories of the ProAV industry, but we stuff the articles full of our opinions. That may include (but is not limited to) whether or not the product is even worth looking at, challenging the manufacturers on their specifications, calling a marketing-spec bluff and suggesting ways integrators market their products better. But, one thing is for sure, we are NOT a trade publication that gets paid for running editorial or product stories. Traditional trade publications get paid to run product stories — that’s why you see what you see in most of the pubs out there. We are different: We run what we want to run and NO ONE is going to pay us to write anything good (or bad).
