So You Have a Recall
By Lee Distad rAVe Columnist
Late last year, I got to have a front row seat for a major product recall from one of the world’s largest electronics manufacturers.
Well, maybe it’s not accurate to say I had a front row seat –more like, as a distributors’ rep, I was on the sharp end of the stick, having to manage the recall with my dealer network.
Let’s just be grateful that product recalls in consumer electronics are blessedly few and far between.
In some sectors, recalls are an almost-daily occurrence. Just in casual observation, manufacturers of kids’ toys and baby accessories, from everything from cribs to car seats, run recalls constantly — or at least it seems so.
At the time, it was an enormous hassle that left me chained to my desk for over two months handling my responsibilities. That meant no store visits, no sales calls and no new product meetings while I worked my phone and email to coordinate the recall in my territory.
In retrospect, it wasn’t that bad, although it seemed that way at the time, and our vendor partner handled their responsibilities about as well as they could be expected to.
Part of the manufacturer’s responsiveness was due to their size and presence in the marketplace, to be sure. But a large part was down to their grasp of the importance of looking after their customers and learning from the mistakes that other brands have made.
My experience dealing with that situation on the front end of distribution got me thinking and doing a lot of reading on the subject. Being able to effectively handle a recall, when it comes, is a valuable set of skills to have ready to go in your toolbox, no matter where you are in the supply chain.
It’s not unusual for large manufacturers to have prepared plans for recall processes in the box, ready to be rolled out if necessary. They’ll make use of resources to have all their operational, logistical, legal and public relations teams ready to work from the same playbook. I referred to child safety product manufacturers before, who seem to have this process down to a science.
If you’re elsewhere in the supply chain, you’ll end up playing your part in your vendor partner’s plans. With that in mind, it’s helpful to understand where they’re coming from.
Promptness is the greatest virtue in announcing a recall. Sooner is better than later to issue a public statement and begin rolling out the logistics and the PR management.
Next in order is the need to take responsibility and full ownership of both the problem and the solution. The greatest PR blunders occur when brands try to kick the can down the road, which only amplifies negative public perception, not to mention possible legal costs later on. Frequent, transparent communication via press and social media can ameliorate public perception.
Part of taking ownership involves proactively moving on the issue before government regulators do. While regulatory bodies responsible for public safety have an important role, they can be slower to respond than the manufacturer. The time delay while a regulator decides there’s a problem can be costly. Better to be proactive instead of waiting to be told what to do.
Separate but related to the prior points: Frequent, transparent communication is vital. Whether your job is to communicate the status of the recall to the general public or with stakeholders in the supply chain such as resellers and distributors, regular updates on how the recall is progressing goes a long way towards keeping tempers in check.
In order to best communicate that means all messaging has to be both consistent and accurate. I mentioned before that everyone has to be playing from the same playbook. That’s why it’s important that everyone involved at every level needs to be given consistent information.
Lastly, the guiding principle behind rolling out a recall should be the safety and well-being of your customers. All other considerations like profit, lost, brand-image and reputation are secondary to that. Leave a Comment

When Will CEDIA Hire a New CEO? I’ll Tell You
By Gary Kayye rAVe Founder
To say that the “perceived” sudden departure of CEDIA‘s short-time president and CEO, Vin Bruno isn’t big news would be a lie. It’s all nearly every Home AV manufacturer I’ve spoken to over the past two weeks has asked about it, asked if I know what happened, asked if I knew if Vin got fired, asked if it was because of Crestron that Vin left or just called to ask my opinion. And, this is not like 10 companies. It’s like 50+ companies. And, all the biggies you’d probably know off the top of your head. It’s all they’re talking about.
Most liked Vin, some loved Vin and a few hated him — that’s par for the course for anyone in a leadership role.
And, the changes CEDIA made during his brief tenure are clear — the biggest of which was the sale of the Expo itself.
“This wasn’t sudden,” CEDIA Chairperson Dennis Erskine, of Erskine Group, said in a statement to me over the phone today. In fact, he did allude to the fact that that this had been in the works for the better part of a month prior to the actual announcement. So, it wasn’t so sudden after all.
And, let’s be real here. There’s no way CEDIA (or Vin) will publicly tell us what happened with his departure as there’s a personal reputation issue here — it’s a personnel issue and no one’s going to violate federal employment privacy laws and risk getting sued. Not Vin and not CEDIA.
So, get over it. Get beyond it. He’s gone. Now, on to bigger, more important issues.
I spoke to Mr. Erskine for over 20 minutes today and he was very honest and forthright in answering every question I threw at him. I will write more about my frank conversation with Mr. Erskin later, but here’s what everyone wants to know: When is CEDIA going to hire a new CEO?
The answer is some time after September of this year. It’s not going to happen before the next Expo scheduled for September 6-9, 2017, in sunny San Diego, Calif.
And, the reason for that has absolutely nothing to do with the Expo itself. Erskine said the reason is that CEDIA is working on a long-range planning plan (assisted by Dr. Rebecca Homkes, a strategy expert and fellow with the London School of Economics that also assisted InfoComm with the same process) that won’t be completed until at least September of this year so it makes no sense to hire a full-time CEO until the “plan” is known — totally logical, right? The CEO will want to be picked based on the directives of the long-range plan so, duh.
Erskine also issued a well-written and articulate statement via CEDIA today that read:
“If the business of residential integration teaches us anything, it’s that change is inevitable. Anyone involved in the technology industry knows that the constant evolution of machines – and their interaction with humans – is not only expected, it’s necessary. Many of you have likely read that CEDIA has been evolving of late as well. I’m well aware that to some, recent organizational changes may appear sudden and disruptive. As you know, the governing body of the association is its board of directors, volunteers elected by the membership. As the Chair of that board, I’d like to offer these thoughts and points of clarification regarding the current state of the association:
- Personnel changes occur for a broad variety of reasons. Employees come and go in every company. We are extraordinarily grateful to everyone who is currently or was formerly employed by the association as they have shaped the organization with the interests of members at the core. Current CEDIA staffers are among the most talented, thoughtful, and hardworking individuals I’ve ever had the pleasure to spend time with.
- The current position of the association – both financially and organizationally – has never been stronger. The sale of the show means that CEDIA will redouble its efforts to focus on education and workforce development.
The board is steering this ship with precision and thoughtfulness for the long-term best interests and profitability of its members. I can assure you that the work we’re doing right now alongside CEDIA’s staff to develop a clear, concise, and effective strategy for the association is moving forward brilliantly, and the assistance of Dr. Rebecca Homkes, a strategy expert and fellow with the London School of Economics, is invaluable.
The board is in the beginning stages of a strategy to appoint new leadership, and we will continue to keep you updated. In the interim, Tabatha O’Connor, an association expert with over 15 years’ experience with CEDIA, most recently as COO, will take over the duties as acting President/CEO.
Lastly, I’d urge any member with concerns or questions to contact me or any member of the board directly. We are happy to talk about the association, its people, and our future – which, to my eyes, looks very bright indeed.”

Klipsch Debuts New Architectural SpeakersKlipsch today announces the addition of the Professional Series Reference Premiere Architectural speakers designed exclusively for the professional custom integrators. The all-new high-performance lineup combines the aesthetics of an architectural speaker with the same acoustics as its Klipsch Reference Premiere home theater component speaker counterparts.
The Klipsch Professional Series Reference Premiere Architectural speaker line is made up of five speakers — three in-wall models (PRO-160RPW, PRO-180RPW, and PRO-250RPW LCR) and two in-celling models (PRO-16RPC, PRO-180RPC). The series was designed to reproduce Klipsch Reference Premiere acoustics and utilizes core components of the line. Tractrix horns provide controlled directivity of high frequencies for more dynamic, detailed sound with higher efficiency, while a silicon composite coating reduces high frequency resonance for smoother, flatter frequency response. Titanium dome tweeters minimize distortion and deliver enhanced, detailed performance, and Cerametallic woofers allow for exceptional efficiency and powerful low frequencies.
The new proprietary SecureFit two-piece modular installation system creates a more robust, stable acoustic platform for the speakers. It enables a quick and easy one-personal installation solution and allows for dog legs to be engaged by hand to a preset clamping force. This eliminates the possibility of breaking the dog leg or cracking the drywall. Machine screws secure the speaker module, as opposed to traditional drywall screws, thus reducing the baffle vibration by up to 40 percent.
The flat, paintable, magnetic grilles are bezel-free and in-ceiling models include both round and square grilles to fit any interior design. A magnetic paint shield protects the SecureFit installation frame and speaker from paint or dust during construction or renovations. You can see them here. Leave a Comment

Bose Professional Introduces EdgeMax In-Ceiling Loudspeakers with PhaseGuide Technology Bose Professional announces the introduction of its EdgeMax in-ceiling loudspeakers. EdgeMax loudspeakers feature proprietary Bose PhaseGuide technology, which Bose says provides room-filling coverage while improving overall sound quality compared to the performance of conventional ceiling loudspeakers.
Designed for mounting near wall boundaries, EdgeMax loudspeakers project high-frequency sound throughout rooms up to 65 feet (20 meters) wide using only perimeter mounting locations, and can effectively cover an area that would require up to four conventional conical-coverage models. Thus, EdgeMax loudspeakers can eliminate the need for conventional ceiling speakers mounted in the center of rooms, or surface-mount loudspeakers mounted on walls. And because of their unique design and consistent coverage pattern, EdgeMax loudspeakers enable installers to move efficiently through the installation, creating a great-looking and great-sounding end result. Additionally, EdgeMax loudspeakers produce excellent intelligibility for speech and full-frequency response for music, making it ideal for retail, commercial, industrial, institutional and residential applications.
EdgeMax in-ceiling premium loudspeakers are available with two different horizontal coverage patterns. EdgeMax EM90 models provide nominal 90-degree horizontal coverage and are intended for in-ceiling mounting near room corners. EdgeMax EM180 models provide nominal 180-degree horizontal coverage and are intended for in-ceiling mounting near wall boundaries centered along target coverage zones. Both models feature 75-degree asymmetrical vertical coverage, which is optimized for ceiling heights between eight feet and 20 feet.
Key features of EdgeMax in-ceiling premium loudspeakers:
- PhaseGuide technology, which provides unique asymmetrical vertical coverage pattern designed for room-filling sound when mounted in-ceiling near wall boundaries
- 1.3-inch diaphragm compression driver for best-in-class audio quality with superior frequency response and coverage consistency versus typical dome tweeters
- Eight-inch woofer with wall-boundary loading, which provides extended bass impact
- Two-way passive crossover with 8-ohm or 70V/100V transformer taps
- New mounting-clamp system for fast, easy installs
- Magnetically attached grill for quick access to wiring and tap settings
- UL1480 listing for air-handling (plenum) space installation
- Easy installation, saving integrators time in the field
EdgeMax in-ceiling premium loudspeakers will be previewed during the 2017 InfoComm show and are scheduled for fourth-quarter 2017 availability. Here are the details. Leave a Comment

Metra Home Theater Group Intros an EDID RegeneratorCustom integrators are challenged with maintaining a high quality audio / video output, despite many issues that occur along the signal path connecting HDMI devices. To address this issue, Metra Home Theater Group has developed the Junior+ (HDM-JRPLUS) as the new “go to” EDID problem solver. This easy to install solution minimizes system failures and increases compatibility between devices that have different data tolerances or between devices with multiple brands of HDMI-enabled electronics. At rAVe, we see this as an interesting tool for rental and staging companies as well.
The Junior+ was created to reduce the effective capacitive loading “Rise Time” issues commonly found on the DDC channel (EDID) of the HDMI interface. This can be caused by cables, printed circuit boards, and environmental conditions. The Junior+ reduces the cables capacitive issues loading by 50 percent.
This correction solves many common issues such as:
- Audio dropouts
- HDCP not supported
- Mode not supported
- Mode out of range
- Long sync times
- The dreaded “black screen”
The Junior+ has a new, smaller male/female form factor to allow for a simple installation directly into equipment, in most cases at the source side.
The “PLUS” part of the product name is a recent development that was designed to deal with Voltage and Current equipment incompatibilities within the new EDID substructure. While fully backwards compatible, the Junior+ was designed for the most modern components. It provides 18Gbps of throughput and covers all 4K /HDR Rev2.0 features to ensure years of reliable HDMI service.
The Junior+ data performance has been tested and given the seal of approval by DPL Labs, an independent testing facility. DPL’s laboratory provides highly precise and critically accurate Digital-HD (DHD) product performance testing. Utilizing an exhaustive, multi-element testing regime, DPL Labs engineers put all submitted products through an electronic torture test to assure customers that a product will exceed expectations for performance quality and long-term reliability.

For all you REGULAR readers of rAVe HomeAV Edition out there, hopefully you enjoyed another opinion-packed issue!
For those of you NEW to rAVe, you just read how we are — we are 100% opinionated. We not only report the news and new product stories of the high-end HomeAV industry, but we stuff the articles full of our opinions. That may include (but is not limited to) whether or not the product is even worth looking at, challenging the manufacturers on their specifications, calling a marketing-spec bluff and suggesting ways integrators market their products better. But, one thing is for sure, we are NOT a trade publication that gets paid for running editorial or product stories. Traditional trade publications get paid to run product stories — that’s why you see what you see in most of the pubs out there.
