Pilgrimage is next week, a large-scale youth conference that I produce each year outside of my work with rAVe. I say that it is "outside of my work with rAVe," but it really is integrated into my editorial work — I make decisions on vendors and the products they recommend for use at our event on behalf of the Pilgrimage team. These decisions are directly influenced by the industry news that I cover at rAVe.
My most recent conversation with the venue’s in-house A/V team was related to using some ribbon boards that are in the bowl of the coliseum. They are Daktronics (How crazy, right? Daktronics displays in an arena.) and content is served by Daktronics Content Studio.
I’m grateful that I join conversations with techs having (1) an understanding of the technology as well as (2) an understanding of the importance of the content served on the displays. My (non-technical) team kept saying, "We can only justify the cost of using the displays if they are used for eye-mag feeds." And I said "LOL, so that will look terrible."
This issue features another great column by Joel Rollins. He is a natural storyteller, as you have probably gathered by reading his articles, and this column certainly delivers.
Those of us in the AV Club always knew that stagers were the elite troops of the audiovisual world. We packed our combat vehicles full of big, impressive audiovisual weaponry, put on our black clothing for the attack and invaded hostile foreign hotels and convention centers. When we arrived, we hit the ballroom and prepared our positions for the onslaught of the audience, who came ashore in waves from the doors as we called out commands to our troops via radio. And, as with all elite troops, we kept our movements secret from the enemy by speaking in code.
