What a week it’s been for education. I’ve already had to stop and take a Tuesday breather just reading about it. Yesterday, our not-so-little local university here made national news after, one week into students’ return to on-campus learning, clusters of coronavirus started popping up in “a pattern of rapid spread.” This led to the university deciding to move all closes online — and swiftly. In California, on the other hand, the governor made the opposite call for all distance learning. What happened at UNC-Chapel Hill was not (and will not be) an isolated incident in education this fall. UNC was one of the first and largest schools in the nation to bring students back to campus, but other public universities and private learning institutions — USC, Georgia, UVA, Syracuse, to name a few — are set to welcome students back this week and next.

This week, our columns, industry stories and product news follow this beat. Read them to stay abreast of the latest AV innovations in education as we strap ourselves in for a bumpy season.

What will follow in the coming weeks will, no doubt, be an adventure. Or should I say a learning experience?

COLUMNS

+ Making Virtual and Distance Learning an Easier Reality [Rob Voorhees]

School districts nationwide are being advised to space out desks, close cafeteria lunches and ban recess time to protect our children, teachers and communities. Some schools have already announced the continuation of remote schooling or even a hybrid model for the upcoming year. This is where the term “Distance Learning” really resonates with us all.

+ The Four Rs — Survive to Thrive [Mark Coxon]

I think I can confidently say that we’re tired of hearing about “Unprecedented Times” and “The New Normal.” If you’re in a company that has been fortunate enough to be doing well, I give you my permission to stop reading now and go count your cash. You’ve earned it! However, if you’ve felt the pandemic pinch over the last four months, then this blog’s for you. If you’re wondering how to go from surviving to thriving as the light becomes visible at the end of the tunnel, I give you the four Rs.
