InfoComm: A Wild Kingdom
By Joel Rollins rAVe Columnist
When I was a kid, “family television” meant television to be watched by the family, and not television about families rehearsing for their court date or climbing over each other’s bodies to get to the throne. No, “family television” meant “Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom,” hosted by noted zoologist Marlin Perkins. Each week, the show followed a predictable course: Marlin Perkins would remain in the studio while his intrepid assistant, Jim Fowler, trekked into the wilds. Marlin did the voiceover and instructed Jim on how to escape the clutches of the dangerous creatures found in the wilderness.
So, as I prepare to go off to yet another InfoComm show, I thought I would do our readers the same favor, and help them to navigate the dangers of the dense, artificially misted jungles of Las Vegas.
Welcome to InfoComm’s Wild Kingdom.
First, as you leave the oddly-themed and garishly decorated basecamp of your casino hotel, you are likely to encounter two of the convention jungle’s parasitic pests: the Lobby Lizard (lurkus longwindicus) and the Common Barfly. (Note: When encountering a lobby lizard, do not look it directly in the eye. This encourages their aggressive tendencies and they might approach you.) In the lobby, it is also possible that you will encounter one of the jungle’s newer lifeforms, the Preening Retweeter (repeatus adnauseous). The Retweeter is harmless, having become mesmerized by its own smartphone.
Brush off these minor pests. We are here for bigger game.
As you approach the show floor, it is likely that you will have to press your way through dense, slow-moving herds of Bewilderbeast (gawkus noobicus). Confused and seeking out others of their kind for strength in numbers, the Bewilderbeast is the new “end-user” life form introduced to the InfoComm Show Jungle as part of AVIXA’s marketing plan. This introduction of a new life form has altered the AV ecosystem forever. Once a rarity, Bewilderbeast herds now threaten to consume all available resources.
Press onward. You are nearing your first landmark: the main entrance. You can’t miss it. Not only is it surrounded by cascading video walls, it will often be circled by one or more sharp-eyed Order Hawks. You will be able to push safely pass them, as they are waiting for their favorite prey, the Yellow-Bellied Salesucker, who cannot resist the Order Hawk’s shrill cry of “Show Special… Show Special.”
As you venture onto the show floor, keep your eyes open for the wild Tchotchke Hog (teeshirtus grabimus). They roam the show jungle in small groups, and are often mistaken for domesticated beasts of burden because of the overstuffed tote bags they carry. Attempts have been made to tame the Tchotchke Hog, but they are considered too distractible for domestication, and are easily lured away by more shiny objects to put in their bag.
A distant cousin of the Tchotchke Hog is the Voracious Mintsnapper (a marsupial), who roams from booth to booth, filling its pouch with goodies. For your own safety, do not stand between the Mintsnapper and a bowl of Hershey’s Kisses.
The Selfie Bug might be spotted anywhere on the show floor. These strange creatures are quite harmless and can be distinguished by their awkward movements while attempting to position themselves to put their prey behind them. We are left to wonder what kind of natural selection created a creature that is obviously fascinated by its own plumage.
Maneuver carefully near the larger exhibits lest you encounter a Stripesuited Slick (pinstripus clingi). The slick attacks its prey by simply hanging on until the prey becomes tired, and gives up its credit card number. Stripesuited Slicks are mostly domesticated by the larger manufacturers, and are confined to their exhibits, but it is still possible to encounter a free-roaming slick. The buddy system is advised when you enter any area where free-roaming slicks have been reported, so that your buddy can extricate you with an “urgent message from the boss” should you be cornered by a slick.
A relatively new denizen of the jungle, always found near the VR exhibits, is the Blind Pointer. You are most likely to encounter this creature when it accidentally stumbles into you, a VR headset over its eyes, pointing and shouting at something that you cannot see.
Remember: At any time that you become lost, you can look for our version of the game warden — Show Management. Always recognizable in whatever brightly-colored plumage the execs forced them to wear, they can be an invaluable guide to the nearest watering hole, even if their estimate of the number of creatures coming into the jungle this year always seems a little high.
Finally, as you make your way to the exit, ignore the cries of the Order Hawks and their eager hatchlings: no, you don’t want to “experience a revolution in digital display.” You did that yesterday. It’s been a long safari, and there is a spot at the watering hole waiting for you back at basecamp.
Well, that’s all the time we have for this week’s show. And now for a word from our sponsors… Leave a Comment

NEUTRIK Introduces New Dante I/O Interface
The new NEUTRIK intelligent NA2-IO-DLINE Interface enables integration of analog signal devices within a Dante AoIP network in just a few easy steps.
This new end-of-network device offers two analog inputs and two outputs, enabling it to simultaneously integrate two analog audio channels within a Dante network or output a Dante stream as two analog channels. “The ability to feed and transmit signals at the same time eliminates the need for investment in new devices,” says Frick.
Converting two analogue line signals to a Dante stream and a Dante stream to two analog line signals, simultaneously, enables the NA2-IO-DLINE to feed analog signals to a Dante network, while receiving a mix from another Dante source and feeding it to non-Dante ready amplifiers, self-powered speaker systems, signal processors, mixing consoles, etc.
The unit requires a Power over Ethernet switch or a PoE injector (802.3 af/at; class 1) and is AES67 compliant, which enables it to be used more extensively with other AES67 compliant AoIP networks.
The NA2-IO-DLINE is optimized for use in extreme environments and applications, offering the usual NEUTRIK standards of robust construction and protection. The unit comes ‘wrapped’ in a highly protective rubber casing for stand-alone deployment; this can be removed, allowing it to be used with optional mounting brackets or a rack panel, enabling it to be mounted below tables, in floor boxes or in equipment racks for fixed installation applications. In addition, the unit is equipped with lockable etherCON connections for audio and network I/O.

Bose Professional T8S and T4S ToneMatch Stereo Mixers Now Available
Bose Professional is now shipping the latest additions to its ToneMatch audio engine series: the new eight-channel T8S ToneMatch mixer and the four-channel T4S ToneMatch mixer, representing the next generation of the ToneMatch line and offering unprecedented connectivity with intuitive control. Compact and portable, both the T8S and T4S are gig-ready. Their rugged enclosures have a protective, magnetically-coupled cover to protect controls and connectors. A chassis-bottom insert allows the use of standard mounting accessories to keep the mixers in reach during performances.
The eight-channel T8S ToneMatch mixer is intuitive to operate, with illuminated, tactile controls, an easy-to-read display and scene recall. ToneMatch processing presets with the powerful and advanced DSP engine (including studio-quality effects and Bose zEQ equalization, which redefines low, mid and high ranges for each ToneMatch preset) make it easy for musicians to take control of their music. When used with Bose L1 and F1 systems, the T8S provides full end-to-end tonal optimization.
The T8S includes a ToneMatch power supply. Dimensions are: 8.4 x 12.25 x 3.25 inches (214 x 311 x 83 millimeters).
The four-channel T4S offers most of the same features as the T8S, but also includes dual ToneMatch links – designed to send digital audio to L1 Model 1S/II systems while receiving power on the same provided ToneMatch cable (note: when not used with an L1 system, the T4S can also be optionally powered by an accessory ToneMatch power supply). The final difference between the mixers is the inclusion of an output meter on the T8S (not included on the T4S). Dimensions are 8.4 x 7.25 x 3.25 inches (214 x 184 x 83 millimeters).
The T8S and T4S are now available for $899 and $599, respectively. You can see it here. Leave a Comment

Telestream Wirecast Adds Support for Control Surface, PTZ and Facebook Telestream today announced a new release of Wirecast, Telestream’s award-winning live streaming and production software for Mac and Windows. The latest release features built-in PTZ (Pan, Tilt, Zoom) control for robotic cameras in Wirecast Pro, support for the X-Keys Wirecast Control Surface, paired encoding contribution with Facebook Live and more.
Paired encoding to Facebook Live allows videographers and freelancers to more easily target and stream content to Facebook pages for clients, customers, and their brands without requiring admin passwords or credentials for the main Facebook account. This is particularly useful for pages with multiple contributors and cross-promotional streaming.
To enable sophisticated multi-camera productions without adding extra staff and cost, Wirecast Pro now supports built-in PTZ control. Optimized for the PTZOptics camera line using the VISCA-over-IP protocol, this provides added flexibility and speed when generating alternative camera angles and framing from PTZ cameras without leaving the Wirecast interface.
Support for P.I. Engineering’s X-keys Wirecast control surface enables rapid, responsive operation of Wirecast in fast-paced live production environments. The new Wirecast control surface offers instant access to 12 sources on each of the five layers in Wirecast. The status of each layer and source is indicated on the controller via a light behind the corresponding key. One button triggering of saved scenes, outputs, and transitions puts the most frequently used features literally at the operator’s fingertips.
The X-keys for Wirecast Controller will come FREE with any new purchase of a Wirecast Gear 230 system through the end of June 2018. More information is here. Leave a Comment

Barco XDL Laser Projector Now Carries a 75K-Lumen Spec Barco is launching a new range of laser projectors dubbed the XDL. Designed specifically for very large venues and events, the XDL is spec’d to be Rec. 2020 color, uses a native (4096×2160) 4K resolution 3-chip DLP system and can handle content up to 120Hz. The XDL will be launched to coincide with InfoComm 2018.
The XDL series also carries the brightest lumen spec ever, up to 75,000 lumens. Barco also says the XDL speeds up the installation process by reducing cable hassle and alignment time because the projectors provide a lens shift of up to 100 percent. And, images can be matched to the projection surface with the on-board real-time warping and blending feature.
Companies that already own Barco XLD+ lenses will be able to reuse them on the XDL projectors. Because they are all using a laser light source, image flicker and lamp-related costs and maintenance (such as lamp replacements) are eliminated. Compared to xenon projectors, the XDLs also consume 40% less power and ensure minimum downtime.
Here are all the specs and options. Leave a Comment

RCF Adds More Low Frequency to TT+ Theater and Touring Series with New TTS15-A and TTS18-A MK2The design philosophy for the RCF TT+ Series is based on offering the sound engineer solutions with the ability to provide controlled and consistent sound definition at high output levels for applications ranging from concert halls and houses of worship to touring and stadium situations.
The strength of the product is based on the fact that RCF is one of the few loudspeaker manufacturers worldwide who completely design and manufacture the transducers, cabinets, amplification and control electronics. This control allows RCF to offer the TT+ Series offering maximum output efficiency in sound pressure levels, minimum mechanical weight ratio, and extremely compact dimensions of the products.
The process starts with the transducers. The RCF design features lightweight neodymium magnet, inside-outside cooper voice coil and dual-forced hyperventing system for heat dissipation, dual silicone spider which provides strength and stability under large excursion conditions for tight response and water treated cone for weather and high humidity environment protection.
The success of the RCF TT+ Series has relied on providing total system design capabilities. Complementing the line array products, RCF has offered the TTS26-A dual 15” subwoofer, TTS36-A dual 18” subwoofer and TTS56-A dual 21” subwoofer.
Now, RCF expands the low frequency offerings with the TTS15-A single 15” and TTS18-A MK2 single 18” products.
The TTS15-A is a long asked for addition. The 15” woofer is powered by an onboard 1100-watt RMS Class-D amplifier with a frequency response from 40-400 Hz and 134 dB SPL maximum output.
The TTS18-A MK2 is an upgrade to the original TTS18-A with new amplifier and transducer technology. This enabled RCF to increase the power by 40 percent to 1400-watts with frequency response down to 35Hz and ability to achieve 136 dB max SPL. The transducer is an 18” hypervented woofer with 4” voice coil.
RCF’s propriety RDNet onboard allows for integration in total system design as well as the abiity to remote monitor all components in the cabinet with DSP to incorporate into system audio control functionality.
The design of the subwoofer cabinets allow them to be positioned vertically or horizontally, with M20 pole receptacles on both top and side. The cabinets are heavy duty multi-ply birch with weatherproof finish. For transport, RCF offers an optional detachable front wheelboard with 100mm casters.
The TTS15-A and TTS18-A MK2 will be at Infocomm RCF booth #C738 and Demo Room N117 and are in stock for immediate shipping. Here are more specs. Leave a Comment

Radial’s New Compact Mixer Presenter Ships Radial Engineering has announced their $299 Presenter is now shipping. The Presenter is a compact mixer that combines a microphone pre-amp and a USB program input to create the ultimate interface for any presentation, from school lectures to corporate audio.
The USB input on the Presenter allows for direct connection to a laptop for high quality audio playback, perfect for presentations that include digital audio files, or for DJ applications. This connection also provides power for the Presenter, eliminating the need to carry around a separate power adapter. For connection to mobile devices such as smartphones or tablets, a 3.5mm stereo input jack is included on the front of the unit, and can be adjusted using the program level control. The XLR microphone input is paired with low and high EQ controls to tailor the frequency response, along with a low cut filter that rolls off excessive low end.

The Presenter’s compact size allows it to easily fit on a desktop or podium, and it includes a port for a Kensington lock to secure it for permanent installations. As an added benefit, the Presenter can also be used as a USB recording interface, so speeches or lectures can be recorded for later use.

For all you REGULAR readers of rAVe Rental [and Staging] Edition out there, hopefully you enjoyed another opinion-packed issue!
For those of you NEW to rAVe, you just read how we are — we are 100 percent opinionated. We not only report the news and new product stories of the ProAV industry, but we stuff the articles full of our opinions. That may include (but is not limited to) whether or not the product is even worth looking at, challenging the manufacturers on their specifications, calling a marketing-spec bluff and suggesting ways integrators market their products better. But, one thing is for sure, we are NOT a trade publication that gets paid for running editorial or product stories. Traditional trade publications get paid to run product stories — that’s why you see what you see in most of the pubs out there. We are different: we run what we want to run and NO ONE is going to pay us to write anything good (or bad).
Don’t like us, then go away — unsubscribe! Just use the link below.
To send me feedback, don’t reply to this newsletter. Instead, write directly to me at gary@ravepubs.com or for editorial ideas, Editor-in-Chief Sara Abrons at sara@ravepubs.com
A little about me: I graduated from Journalism School at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (where I am adjunct faculty). I’ve been in the AV-industry since 1987 where I started with Extron and eventually moved to AMX. So, I guess I am an industry veteran (although I don’t think I am that old). I have been an opinionated columnist for a number of industry publications and in the late 1990s I started the widely read KNews eNewsletter (the first in the AV market) and also created the model for and was co-founder of AV Avenue, which is now known as InfoComm IQ. rAVe [Publications] has been around since 2003, when we launched our original newsletter, rAVe ProAV Edition.
Everything we publish is Opt-in — we spam NO ONE! rAVe ProAV Edition is our flagship ePublication with what we believe is a reach of virtually everyone in the ProAV market. rAVe HomeAV Edition, co-published with CEDIA and launched in February 2004, is, by far, the largest ePub in the HomeAV market. We added rAVe Rental [and Staging] in November 2007, rAVe ED [Education] in May 2008 and then rAVe DS [Digital Signage] in January 2009. We added rAVe GHGav [Green, Healthcare & Government AV] in August 2010 and rAVe HOW [House of Worship] in July 2012.
