Savant Unveils Awesome Savant Remote
By Gary Kayye rAVe Founder
Savant today unveiled the Savant Remote. It is, by far, the coolest (and easiest to program) handheld remote we have ever seen. No joke. At this time, it’s aimed exclusively at home entertainment as it only controls that part of your house (i.e. TV, all the stuff connected to your TV, whole house audio systems, smart lighting systems, etc) but, they made it clear to me that they were going to upgrade it (think: iPhone-like updates) that make it work with HVAC, security systems and more over the coming year.
And, we got a bit of inside information: They will be launching a commercial AV one, too. So, that’s why we’re posting this story in the ProAV and HomeAV newsletters and on our website everywhere.
It’s like a universal remote with some home automation. The built-in (no need to self-configure) parts of the Savant Remote includes all TV’s, Sonos, Apple TV, all cable boxes, Roku, Philips lights and a over 380,000 of today’s most popular entertainment devices, but everything else can be programmed (very, very easily) by the homeowner.
The Savant Remote is part of Savant’s new family of wireless devices, which also includes the Savant Host, Blaster, and Lamp Controller — all designed by the famous design studio Ammunition, led by industrial designer Robert Brunner. That’s why it looks so good – it literally makes all other handheld remotes look super boring. But, Savant says that it is integrated with their Savant’s Pro smarts.
It has buttons below a touchscreen and all the control happens wirelessly via Bluetooth (to the Savant Host base) and then it’s converted to Wi-Fi and IR without requiring any line of sight between the Remote and your entertainment system. In fact, the IR Blaster shoots IR all over the room in all directions (for IR controlled gear like a TV, AppleTV, Roku, etc) and the WiFi does the rest (like the Sonos, the lighting systems, etc).
Oh, if that wasn’t enough, the dang thing has built-in voice recognition (and my test was it was better than Apple’s Siri and anyone that knows me knows I use Siri a lot. So, you can simply say “FOOD NETWORK” or “APPLE TV” and it performs all the functions (they didn’t say how many in one command but they did say over 20) So, when you say “Food Network” it turns on the tv and the cable or satellite box, then switches inputs on the TV and turns to the Food Network channel – oh, and can dim the lights automatically if that was a command you programmed to happen every time your TV was turned on. And, built in, when you say “GOODNIGHT,” everything turns off.
So, how easy is it to set-up? Well, they designed something called Savant Instant, an in-app guided setup for the Smart Remote that walks users through each step of the setup process, and helps them connect all their entertainment devices without needing to know specific model types or model numbers.
It will ship in early December, just in time for the holidays.and the Savant Remote + Host entertainment package will cost $499. Lamp Controllers will be available separately for $99 each, giving homeowners the ability to turn lamps on and off from anywhere using either the Savant Remote or Savant App.

Crossing The Rimikon
By Lee Distad rAVe Columnist
Slowly but surely, we’re moving towards the future of lighting. In January of 2014, Canada legislated to ban 75- and 100-watt incandescent light bulbs. Then in January of 2015 40- and 60-watt incandescent bulbs were outlawed. Businesses are still allowed to sell through their existing inventory, which is why 40- and 60-watt bulbs are still on the shelves at Rona and Home Depot (but no more 100-watt bulbs, I’ve noticed — those are long gone), but it’s only a matter of time now.
Indeed, the future, and in fact the present now belongs to LED technology.
By now everybody knows that LED bulbs use much less electricity than incandescent bulbs, last substantially longer and generate next to no waste heat. The bulbs contain no mercury, which is far more environmentally friendly than CFL (compact florescent) bulbs. And in the case of new LED fixtures, as opposed to LED bulbs that are intended for high voltage legacy fixtures, they are of a low enough voltage to mitigate any risk of shock during installation.
One lighting vendor who has gone All-In on LED technology is Ottawa, Canada-based Rimikon, who now specializes in LED Lighting and creates, designs, and manufactures low voltage lighting systems.
Rimikon points to a number of features that makes their product stand out, and allows lighting designers and integrators to create exciting lighting solutions for residential, commercial, or architectural applications.
All the LED products in their lighting systems, such as pot lights, cabinet lights and strip lights run on 24-volt extra low voltage DC current. There’s no shock hazard, and their pots, for example, can be wired using 14/2 stranded speaker wire!
It also means that their pots can be retrofitted in ceiling spaces without a metal back can. That makes them ideal for use in ceiling, outdoor soffit or bathroom shower installations.
Rimikon also points to the other usage benefits of LED lighting. Unlike CFL bulbs, there’s no flickering, which can lead to headaches, eyestrain and discomfort. They don’t give off UV light, which can discolor lightly colored furnishings over time. And perhaps the biggest benefit is that they don’t generate heat, which means they can be installed in places, like under-counter task lighting where excess heat could warp and damage cabinets.
All of that is all well and good, but what’s going to be of more interest to AV pros is that Rimikon is releasing the RIM-IPC, its own IP Controller module for its Extra Low Voltage LED Products. The unit is IP addressable, as well as being able to operate on WIFI, and can be used with the Rimikon Android and IOS App, offering a remote control distance that can reach up to 50 meters indoor and up to 100 meters outdoors. One IP Controller is required for each lighting zone. Additionally, IP control drivers are available to integrate the RIM-IPC for Control 4, Crestron, URC and RTI control systems.

CEDIA — The Future is Here
By Olivia Selke CEDIA
Over 25 years ago a group of technology enthusiasts and thought leaders gathered together to cast a vision for an industry that was growing quickly before their eyes. They defined the custom residential technology space, and formed CEDIA as the connection point for the numerous stakeholders to share their passion, find resources to help them grow, and share in the outlook for the future of the industry. CEDIA delivered a vision of what could be and helped bring it to the world.
CEDIA in 2015 continues a forward-thinking focus, seeking new opportunities to foster community and provide pathways for prosperity to CEDIA members. Programs to support the focus have already begun to take shape.
Our members who were at the show got a taste of what we are implementing both visually and programmatically. It was hard for anyone to miss the new CEDIA brand identity.
It was also hard to miss the CEDIA booth on the show floor where there were numerous programs that provided opportunities for attendees to connect, explore training topics, and hear from industry visionaries.
The tradeshow was a perfect launching ground for our new brand strategy which includes a new Vision: Life Lived Best at Home. Beyond the show, the strategy dives deep to understand what matters most to members and how CEDIA can continue to provide a vision and direction for success in the industry. Some outputs of the plan include:
- Aligning education programs to meet integrators where they are, whether new or seasoned, and provide development pathways to help them move to the next level
- Developing and facilitating new community-building initiatives for year-round networking, mentorship and idea sharing
- Connecting integrators and manufacturers to leverage new technology and expand prosperity
- Leveraging emerging technology and trendspotting to identify new revenue streams
- Introducing a new sophisticated visual identity that better represents the industry and membership
There is a new energy behind CEDIA and we are excited to continue to develop the programs our members need to thrive. Leave a Comment

CEDIA 2015 Attendance Tops 18,000
CEDIA 2015 showcased a new energy for the industry, evident by a 16 percent increase in integrator attendance and a 6 percent increase in the number of exhibitors participating in the show.
More than 18,700 attendees participated in this year’s event alongside 510 exhibiting companies. Exhibitors were quick to call out the quality of attendees at CEDIA 2015.
“This year has definitely been incredible and you could feel the energy on the show floor. Our booth has been slammed the entire show with the people we want to talk to. We are humbled to have come so far in 10 short years,” said Skyler Meek with Screen Innovations.
“Dallas is a new draw for people we haven’t gotten to talk with before,” said Ron Maurer, executive vice president for Current Audio. “More than anything, we’ve gotten more good, quality leads on our first day of the show than we ever have.”
CEDIA is where we come to do business. We’ve been consistently busy meeting with new and current reps and setting meetings with our partners; it’s always a good show for us,” said Kenton Smith, marketing director for Luxul.
The number of first-time attendees was up 33 percent this year and 124 exhibitors made their CEDIA debut: Both noted a warm welcome from the industry.
“This is our first time exhibiting at CEDIA and we are impressed with both the reception we have received and the knowledge of the integrators we have talked to,” said Jenny Snodgrass, sales & marketing operations manager for DynaQuip Controls. “The way people have responded is proof that there is a demand for our product from both homeowners and integrators.”
“I came to the show looking to get into the industry. I was blown away by the community that exists in this space – people are willing to talk with you and connect you with others in their network. I’ve never seen anything like that before in any other industry,” said first-time attendee Ellis Thomas.
CEDIA 2015 also offered attendees numerous events where they could network and learn. Highlights included the Opening Keynote by famed Futurist Michael Rogers, the New Point of View Party, the Awards Celebration and a variety of events in the CEDIA booth including the new CEDIA Talks where attendees could hear from industry visionaries. CEDIA also conducted 108 training sessions, and attendees had the opportunity to sit for certification.
“I could not be more pleased with my first CEDIA as CEO. Walking the show floor, I couldn’t help but be energized seeing conversations happening in bustling booths,” said Vin Bruno, CEDIA CEO. “After months and months of hard work, CEDIA also got to unveil our new brand strategy and communicate with our stakeholders that CEDIA is working to provide them with the resources they need to be successful. It truly was a fantastic show.”
For 2016, the CEDIA show will be held at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center in Dallas September 14-17, with the tradeshow floor open September 15-17. Companies interested in exhibiting at CEDIA 2016 may request more information at sales@cedia.org. Leave a Comment

SnapAV Buys Outdoor TV Company SunBriteTVSnapAV’s growth story since launching in 2005 is entering an exciting new chapter as it buys its first display company — and more acquisitions are in the works. The Charlotte, NC-based manufacturer, known for its focus on the residential AV market as being both a manufacturer and a distributor, just announced the acquisition of outdoor TV manufacturer, SunBriteTV.
“Our dealers are doing more and more outdoor systems, and we want to help them grow revenue in those areas,” says SnapAV CEO John Heyman. The SunBriteTV lineup will complement SnapAV’s Episode outdoor audio products to provide dealers with a full solution for outdoor living.
Unlike banker-led financial “rollups” that have been common in the AV industry, SnapAV characterizes this transaction similarly to how they’ve entered a number of new product categories. Heyman indicates that in his conversations with dealers, outdoor spaces are discussed as an area of growth and future opportunity. He adds, “This acquisition represents a commitment that we’re making to the outdoors. While it’s our first major acquisition, it’s really just business as usual in terms of listening to our dealers and taking action based on what they tell us.”
SnapAV plans to sell SunBriteTV products directly to dealers rather than through the AV distribution channels that SunBriteTV has used in the past. SunBriteTV’s Cameron Hill comments, “When dealers purchase SunBriteTV products at SnapAV, they will be direct with the manufacturer, and their pricing will reflect that. SnapAV’s business model delivers value and service at significantly lower costs, and, as with all SnapAV products, dealers will begin benefiting from that right away.”
SunBriteTV products will become available through SnapAV before the end of the year. The company indicates that dealers will see lower prices and free shipping when buying directly from SnapAV, rather than through distribution.
SunBriteTV has already been incorporated into the SnapAV website. Leave a Comment

Stewart Filmscreen to Debut Home Version of LuminEsse ‘Edgeless’ Fixed Frame Wallscreen at CEDIAStewart Filmscreen will introduce its new LuminEsse at CEDIA – a fixed frame wallscreen system to the custom AV installation market. The LuminEsse fixed frame front projection wall screen has been sold through their commercial AV group for almost a year, but has not yet been shown to the residential AV market. Using an edgeless design (think iPhone), Luminesce has an interesting look aesthetically, whether the screen is in use or not. An edgeless design gives the screen a ‘floating image’ effect when in use, and when the projector is off, Stewart believes that the screen itself blends into the surrounding décor, like a piece of art. With a 3/8-inch thin bezel, LuminEsse is available in most of Stewart Filmscreen’s 4K+ rated front projection screen materials, allowing integrators to specify the appropriate screen material for the application.
Material options include their FireHawk G4, GrayHawk RS G4, StudioTek 130, and others. The LuminEsse front projection wallscreen features an optional LED backlighting kit to make viewing more comfortable. The LED lighting acts as bias lighting, relaxing the iris of the eye and causing less strain during extended viewing. When the screen is on, the multicolored perimeter lighting enriches onscreen content; when off, the lighting can be used to set the mood. The LuminEsse rigid front projection screen system uses Stewart’s wall mount system, making screen installation inexpensive, simple, and fast. It is available in sizes up to 121 inches (diagonal) in 16:9 format and up to 151 inches (diagonal) in 2.35:1 configuration.

Beale Street Audio Unveils Its Slimmest In-Wall Speakers
Beale Street Audio says it’s raising the bar of architectural audio expectations once again with the unveiling of its super-slim, two-way in-ceiling/in-wall, full range “Pancake” speakers that measures only two and three quarter inches deep. Ideal for the European market and in cities or other places where ceiling or wall depth can present installation challenges, the Pancake is easy to install and benefits from Beale Street Audio’s performance enhancing Sonic Vortex Technology.
Currently, two models in this series will be available with more planned for the future. The P4-BB, is an in-ceiling/in-wall ultra-thin speaker that features a four inch two-way Carbon Fiber woofer and three-quarter inch Titanium tweeter. The IPLCR4-BB is a LCR speaker that features two four inch Carbon Fiber woofers and a three-quarter inch Titanium tweeter.
The benefits afforded by Sonic Vortex technology are the real magic behind Beale’s new Pancake speaker. Sonic Vortex generates what the company claims is rich, deep bass from what most people would call a ‘back box.’ In reality, the enclosure is actually a compact, integrated, tuned cabinet that offers a ‘twist’ on Ported Transmission Line design by optimizing air movement to produce much bigger sound than the 2 ¾-inch depth leads you to believe. The enclosure also keeps sound from bleeding to other rooms while adding a six to nine dB boost in mid-lower bass.
The speakers are designed to play in full range mode only and achieve an impressive frequency response of 62Hz to 20KHz.

Origin Acoustics Celebrates One-Year with Aluminum Domination
Launching the industry’s first ever in-wall and in-ceiling aluminum speakers, Origin Acoustics says that they actually get better sound from them than using MDF or plastic ever did. Founder Jeremy Burkhardt addressed all the attendees of first press conference held here at CEDIA Expo 2015 in Dallas, by explaining that, even though many industry pundits thought the in-wall distributed audio market was already cluttered, Origin Acoustics has added over 2,000 dealers and has over 140 product SKU’s.
“We actually adding profit to the integrator while saving them time on the install,” proclaimed Burkhardt while taking about their industry-innovative tool-less installable in-wall and in-ceiling speakers. “Integrators actually still charge the same amount of money for the install, but it takes them 6-12 minutes less time to install each speaker.”
Burkhardt is showcasing the quality of the company’s pivotable-speakers here at CEDIA with the world’s first in-ceiling Dolby Atomos theater in their booth.
Origin Acoustics is launching a line of 3″ can (square and round) in-ceiling distributed audio speakers — calling them “bite-sized” audio as well as $4,000 per-room complete system packages. But, probably the most interesting thing I saw there was their outdoor line-array speaker line — think concert line arrays but for the home — making distributed sound without blasting the neighbors.

For all you REGULAR readers of rAVe HomeAV Edition out there, hopefully you enjoyed another opinion-packed issue!
For those of you NEW to rAVe, you just read how we are — we are 100% opinionated. We not only report the news and new product stories of the high-end HomeAV industry, but we stuff the articles full of our opinions. That may include (but is not limited to) whether or not the product is even worth looking at, challenging the manufacturers on their specifications, calling a marketing-spec bluff and suggesting ways integrators market their products better. But, one thing is for sure, we are NOT a trade publication that gets paid for running editorial or product stories. Traditional trade publications get paid to run product stories — that’s why you see what you see in most of the pubs out there. We are different: we run what we want to run and NO ONE is going to pay us to write anything good (or bad).

A little about me: I graduated from Journalism School at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (where I am adjunct faculty). I’ve been in the AV-industry since 1987 where I started with Extron and eventually moved to AMX. So, I guess I am an industry veteran (although I don’t think I am that old). I have been an opinionated columnist for a number of industry publications and in the late 1990s I started the widely read KNews eNewsletter (the first in the AV market) and also created the model for and was co-founder of AV Avenue – which is now known as InfoComm IQ. rAVe Publications has been around since 2003, when we launched our original newsletter, rAVe ProAV Edition.
rAVe HomeAV Edition, co-published with CEDIA, launched in February, 2004.
