Defining AVaaS for Stagers
By Joel Rollins rAVe Columnist
Over the last year or two, I have been reading with increasing frequency about AVaaS, or “Audio Visual as a Service.” In particular, I’ve been paying a lot of attention to the writings of my friend Gary Kayye. Gary is one of the best I have ever met at analyzing a product in our industry and predicting its future. So I usually pay attention when he writes.
However, this time I feel compelled to correct his perspective. Because, having spent the bulk of my career in the rental and staging area of our industry, I find the definition of “service” (as used in this new industry acronym) to be deficient. The new term seems to confuse the idea of paying for hardware and software as you use it, with actual service.
Personally, I believe that stagers have been providing a broader definition of “service” for many years, one that includes trucks, truss and trust (and lots and lots of coffee). People have always been able to rent or lease equipment and software from many sources, lots of them not even within what we consider our industry. But I have a deep-seated belief that “service” in our business goes a lot deeper than that, in that we also make have to make sure that things go well, that the presentation itself is actually a successful one.
So I have decided to broaden our definition of AVaaS by adding a number of the other terms that the S could stand for, but which have always been part of the definition to stagers:
Savvy
How many of you have noticed that when the AV crew arrives on site, they become responsible for EVERYTHING technical? From helping get the social media department online to figuring out the CFO’s new camcorder for him or her, we essentially have to take over responsibility for more than the show. We pretty much have to take on responsibility for everything that is powered with a battery and almost everything that draws wall current.
Sense
Many times, I have sat in preshow meetings trying not to be John Galt from “Atlas Shrugged.” Trying to be patient while answering questions like “I can see why we need two screens, but do we really need two projectors?” or having to explain why the giant balloon centerpieces were going to create an issue for the IMAG cameras.
Secrecy
By default, our crew is going to see many of the client’s secrets. We are going to see new products days before they are introduced to the public and find out about breakthroughs in many industries before they happen. I have always wondered why AV companies were not more frequently investigated for insider trading, but I have always appreciated the fact that the client had to trust us to see this kind of information.
Serenity
The stories of coolness under fire in our industry are what our legends are made of. When I first started in the business, Terry Friesenborg taught me that the first rule of staging was “act naturally and keep moving.” People in our industry constantly fix errors in other people’s work, on-the-fly, and manage to make the show look smooth. We run speaker support for one presenter, while trying to fix the broken computer of the next presenter. I have even seen an AV technician stand-in during rehearsals for a paid presenter who had had a heart attack offstage. The show goes on.
Scapegoat
And yes, I have seen more than one crew take the blame for errors that weren’t their fault. It can be painful, but one of the marks of a professional is running the show without letting ourselves become part of the show. I have seen technical directors and crew members smooth things over quietly and calmly at the time so that the client did not lose face. These are the kind of moments of professionalism that build trust between the client and the crew. How we recover from errors, ours or theirs, is a big part of being a pro.
Stability
Presentations and public events are times of stress for clients. Often, careers and organization reputations are on the line. Having professionals involved is one of the most important factors in ensuring their success. Understanding their goals, their presenters and their clients is a big part of what WE define as “service.”
So there, Gary. Leave a Comment

The companys says the VIO L208 is a powerful and compact stand-alone line array system as well as a fully compatible down-fill for VIO L210 and VIO L208 hybrid systems, completed by VIO S Active subwoofers.
VIO L208 is a two-way active line array system equipped with 2X8” neodymium woofers and 1X1.4” neodymium compression driver (2.5” voice coil). The transducers are positioned behind an all-in-one panel which acts as a phase-plug and a HF horn. The waveguide behind this panel contributes to the creation of a cylindrical wavefront, much to the advantage of hi-frequency throw distance. Each module of VIO L208 is driven by a Class-D Digipro G3 900W amp module with auto-range PSU. Thanks to the advanced sound processing of FIR filters, VIO L208 performs clearly and perfectly. The pre-amp module is also equipped with a digital optical isolation, guaranteeing interference-free input signal.
Just like the larger VIO L210 system, VIO 208’s lightweight wooden enclosure comes with a built-in rigging system made for simplicity and speed: a back central rigging strand allows users to set the relative splay angles directly in the dedicated transport cart DT-VIOL208, which is able to house four modules plus one flying bar. While lifting up the array, the rigging strand will automatically block the systems at the preset angles with no need of heavy lifting.
The dedicated 3-point flying frame DRK 208 allows users to set a precise inclination of the array and is prepared to carry an optional inclinometer laser pointer. When not in use, the flybar can be easily stored in the transport cart.

DVIGear’s DisplayNet 4K Products Featured at ISE 2018 DVIGear is exhibiting the latest SDVoE technology in its DisplayNet AV-Over-10GbE distribution platform at ISE 2018 in Amsterdam, NL on Feb. 6-9 in Stand 1-N30. DVIGear is also demonstrating its suite of end-to-end 4K (UHD) video distribution solutions at the show, including its new generation HyperLight DisplayPort v1.4 Active Optical Cables and the DVI-7340 / DVI-7341 MultiPort 4K Fiber Optic Extenders.
The DN-200 Series is an extension of the DisplayNet AV-over-IP product line. Each Transmitter accepts multiple source signals including HDMI (with embedded audio and HDCP), DisplayPort, analog stereo audio, bidirectional IR, RS232 and 1GbE Ethernet. These input signals are packetized into a 10GbE stream and are distributed to destinations via an off-the- shelf 10GbE network switch. The DN-200 Series supports twisted pair (Cat6a or Cat7) media up to 328 feet (100 meters) or fiber optic media using an industry standard SFP+ module supporting extension distances up to 18 miles (30 km). The 10GbE switch provides a highly efficient and reliable means of distributing AV signals from many sources to an array of Receiver units, which convert the packetized data to AV output signals at the destination in real time without introducing frame latency or any loss of image quality.
The DN-200 Series uses SDVoE technology to distribute uncompressed AV signals with resolutions up to 4K /60p over a 10GbE Ethernet network. The DN-200 Series adds support for HDMI 2.0 with up to 12-bit color, HDCP 2.2, DisplayPort 1.2 and High Speed USB 2.0. A scaler in both the Transmitter (Tx) and Receiver (Rx) units enables very Fast Switching, MultiViewer, and enhanced Video Wall processing. DN-200 transmitter and receiver units are available starting at $1,350 per end point.
DVIGear will also exhibit its latest DNS-200 DisplayNet Server at the show. DisplayNet Server provides a central interface between the control equipment/software and the DisplayNet endpoint devices. This server supports web browser-based DisplayNet Manager software that provides control features, as well as tools to facilitate the use of third party controllers that enable DisplayNet to be easily integrated into AV applications.
DVIGear’s HyperLight Series is a new generation of Active Optical Cables (AOC) that support DisplayPort 1.4 and are HDCP 1.4 / 2.2 compliant and support signals with data rates up to 32.4 Gbps. These features enable HyperLight cables to support resolution applications at 4K / 60Hz (4:4:4) with cable lengths up to 100 meters and 8K / 30Hz (4:4:4) up to 50 meters.
HyperLight cables are plenum-rated (UL CMP-OF) and flexible. Constructed using a hybrid design of Polyfluorinated Optical Fiber and copper wires, they are rugged but with a two millimeters minimum bend radius. DisplayPort docking connectors may be detached making the cables easy to install in narrow conduits and plenum spaces. Video signals are transmitted over the optical fibers, making them immune to interference from environmental noise. The optical transmission path provides a very low RFI / EMI profile that allows the cables to be installed in sensitive applications with strict security requirements. By drawing power from the connected DisplayPort source, the need for an external power supply is fully eliminated.
The DVI-7340 and DVI-7341 are 4K optical extenders that can achieve much greater distances than other extension methods such as copper cables or CAT-X extenders. Each extender set consists of an optical transmitter module that converts the AV signals into light pulses for transmission over a single strand of multi-mode or single-mode optical fiber cable. An optical receiver module converts the light pulses back to AV signals for the display as well as other downstream devices. The units handle cable distances of up to 1,000 feet (300 meters) with or without HDCP. In applications where HDCP compliance is not required, optical links up to 1.2 miles (2 kilometers) are supported. The extenders manage multiple signals such as uncompressed HDMI or DVI, embedded audio, balanced or unbalanced external audio, bidirectional IR, RS232 and Ethernet using a single fiber optic cable. Managing HDMI with embedded audio as well as independently routed balanced audio signal extension, they support resolutions up to 4K (UHD), and offer three EDID modes. The DVI-7340 and DVI-7341 are shipping now at $1,350 list price per set.
DVIGear will also at ISE 2018 in Stand 1-N30 or you can see it all here. Leave a Comment

Leyard and Planar Expand Leyard DirectLight LED Video Wall System LineAt Integrated Systems Europe, Leyard and Planar announced they are expanding its Leyard DirectLight LED Video Wall System product line to include the smallest fine pitch LED video wall display in the industry: a pixel pitch of just 0.7 millimeters. The is significant as the so-called pixel-pitch of an LCD monitor would be approximately the equivalent of .67mm — so this is nearly the identical resolution of a monitor in a meeting room. The expanded line, which also includes a new 2.5 millimeter pixel pitch option, will be showcased at ISE 2018, along with several industry-leading LED solutions.
The Leyard DirectLight LED Video Wall System is a family of seamless, fine pitch LED video wall displays that allow for wall-mounted, front service installations in indoor environments and incorporates the Leyard DriveSense technology.
The Leyard DirectLight 0.7 millimeter display is, so far, the industry’s smallest pixel pitch LED video wall display, providing high resolution images at the closest viewing distance. The Leyard DirectLight 0.7 allows for 4K and 8K resolution video walls in smaller spaces, matching the pixel density seen in traditional control room video walls but with a completely seamless and uniform image. And with the addition of a 2.5 millimeter model, customers now have a wide range of options from which to build high resolution LED video walls tailored to the resolution requirements of almost any indoor environment.

KissBox Was at ISE to Launch Two New Transceivers for Digital Audio, MIDIShow control company KissBox launched two new products aimed at those responsible for the design and implementation of control systems in theme parks, museums, visitor attractions, live shows and many other types of venues, as well as those involved in music technology.
The AU6TR is the first of a new range of KissBox transceivers, developed to transport digital audio over IP networks with minimal latency. Its ruggedised design makes it ideal for deployment in harsh environments such as live/stage applications.
The second new product from KissBox is the CM-MIDI2, which integrates both the powerful RTP-MIDI implementation of KissBox’s MIDI2TR professional transceiver, and the USB-MIDI communication standard found on many music products. The CM-MIDI2 is ideal for musical applications where high speed communication between USB and RTP-MIDI is needed.
On the KissBox stand, the company is partnering with Showlogix to demonstrate the TC2TR (Timecode over Ethernet) interface, highlighting the capabilities of the CM-MIDI2 as an RTP-MIDI interface.
Designed to use the open RTP protocol as well as to be compatible with the Ravenna protocol, the AU6TR delivers peer-to-peer audio streaming as well as audio streaming from/to an external source – similar to a networked sound card. It can perform local real-time audio processing, with integrated control through the network.
The AU6TR can also be used as an RTP audio Interface. It will receive RTP digital audio streams from any compatible device and output them as analog audio signals. Being a transceiver, the AU6TR will also stream analog audio input signals it receives on its inputs to connected receiving devices and software.
The CM-MIDI2 acts as a gateway between the three available MIDI interfaces; any MIDI stream fed into one interface can be re-distributed to any of the two other interfaces. For example, MIDI received on the MIDI-IN DIN connector can be sent both to RTP-MIDI and USB.
The RTP-MIDI interface of the CM-MIDI2 can be used directly with Apple Mac, iOS and Windows devices. It manifests itself as a standard MIDI interface, available for MIDI software such as sequencers, digital audio workstations, SysEx Editor/Librarian and so on.

For all you REGULAR readers of rAVe Rental [and Staging] Edition out there, hopefully you enjoyed another opinion-packed issue!
For those of you NEW to rAVe, you just read how we are — we are 100 percent opinionated. We not only report the news and new product stories of the ProAV industry, but we stuff the articles full of our opinions. That may include (but is not limited to) whether or not the product is even worth looking at, challenging the manufacturers on their specifications, calling a marketing-spec bluff and suggesting ways integrators market their products better. But, one thing is for sure, we are NOT a trade publication that gets paid for running editorial or product stories. Traditional trade publications get paid to run product stories — that’s why you see what you see in most of the pubs out there. We are different: we run what we want to run and NO ONE is going to pay us to write anything good (or bad).
Don’t like us, then go away — unsubscribe! Just use the link below.

A little about me: I graduated from Journalism School at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (where I am adjunct faculty). I’ve been in the AV-industry since 1987 where I started with Extron and eventually moved to AMX. So, I guess I am an industry veteran (although I don’t think I am that old). I have been an opinionated columnist for a number of industry publications and in the late 1990s I started the widely read KNews eNewsletter (the first in the AV market) and also created the model for and was co-founder of AV Avenue, which is now known as InfoComm IQ. rAVe [Publications] has been around since 2003, when we launched our original newsletter, rAVe ProAV Edition.
Everything we publish is Opt-in — we spam NO ONE! rAVe ProAV Edition is our flagship ePublication with what we believe is a reach of virtually everyone in the ProAV market. rAVe HomeAV Edition, co-published with CEDIA and launched in February 2004, is, by far, the largest ePub in the HomeAV market. We added rAVe Rental [and Staging] in November 2007, rAVe ED [Education] in May 2008 and then rAVe DS [Digital Signage] in January 2009. We added rAVe GHGav [Green, Healthcare & Government AV] in August 2010 and rAVe HOW [House of Worship] in July 2012.
