“Technology teams should continue to maintain operational excellence — in the past, their primary function — but because business and technology strategies are now entwined, technology work should evolve to focus on hand-in-hand collaboration with business functions to cocreate value.” This quote comes from a Deloitte study: The Future of Work in Technology. Today Mark Coxon looks to the future, referencing this Deloitte study, and what our industry needs to do to not just survive, but also succeed. For example, when you hire new employees, do you hire for technical skill or soft skills, knowing technical skills can be taught? In the past, that was an easier question to answer, but now it may not be. Paul Konikowski also has more cybersecurity advice, this time with inspiration from Robert Mueller.

NEC Display is also now shipping its recently-announced P605UL “whisper-quiet” laser projector, which tiptoes in at only 19 dB in eco mode. According to the CDC, a human whisper is 30 dB and normal speaking is about 60 dB, so that’s really not an exaggeration.

COLUMNS

+ Eyes on the Future [Mark Coxon]

Technology is breaking out of the operational silo it has lived in within businesses of the past and is now taking a seat next to other disciplines to cocreate strategy. Technology teams will shift from delivering services to delivering business value, facilitated by automation, cloud and… brace yourself, as-a-service models. Given all this, technology is poised to shift from a cost center to a revenue engine. Operational spend will decrease while spending on creating innovation within the business will increase dramatically.

+ Cybersecurity Advice (for the AV Industry) from Robert Mueller [Paul Konikowski, CTS-D]

AV manufacturers have adopted a "security by obscurity" attitude, which has long been determined to be an ineffective approach. It’s time that manufacturers take a more "open design" approach, allow their designs to be scrutinized and share information about vulnerabilities that have been discovered in their devices, as well as information about about cyberattacks.
