Hello HOW readers, how are you doing? We’ve got some great columns, updates and even a case study below, so get reading!

Our first column faces the familiar task of assessing your AVL needs in a worship space. Wanting to grow and expand is a good problem to have, but that means there is one specific hurdle to cross: spending money! Writer Carter Music outlines questions to ask when assessing what needs you have and where funds will go to meet those needs. Get some tips and tricks for tackling your AVL needs assessment in this column!

Next up is a column from our friends over at SynAudCon. This technical piece gives a detailed overview of frequency response matching. Pat says this endeavor is important to both professional and consumer audio products, but should it be part of the system tuning process? Learn all about frequency response and if it works the way we all believe it should. Perhaps you can use Pat’s outline in your next service!

That’s all for today, #HOWtweeps. I’m heading to Enterprise Connect next week, my first trade show with rAVe! Wish me luck!

— Katie Clark

COLUMNS

+ Conducting an AVL Needs Assessment [Carter Music]

As tedious as the leg work of starting a project can be, it’s well worth it. Taking the time to look over your needs and goals allows you to make the most informed decision possible. Working through these questions is a practice of good stewardship, helping to ensure you’re spending wisely (no matter the amount). I’d recommend writing your answers to these questions out and using that to help you present to the final decision-makers.

+ Frequency Response Matching – Should This Be Part of the System Tuning Process? [Pat Brown]

“Frequency response matching” is a popular endeavor in both professional and consumer audio systems. Should this be part of the system tuning process? A logical use of audio filters is to attempt to “match” the frequency response of a microphone, loudspeaker, amplifier, or room to that of another. The logic behind this is the belief that if two components have the same frequency response “curve” they will sound the same. There are even software plugins that can “curve match” automatically and in real-time. Can this really work? Let’s look at when it can, and when it can’t.
