On the topic of Mark Coxon’s column: I just keep laughing at the idea of “iPhone users can only call iPhones” and “Verizon customers can only call other Verizon customers.” It makes me think of “mobile to mobile minutes” that Alltel sold in some of their initial mobile calling plans in the mid-2000s. I’m glad systems are interoperable now more than they have been in the past, but I value Mark’s thoughts. Is it finally how it should be? Read on to find out!
Thinking more broadly about the overall global AV footprint, I want to get into what we can loosely define as “the three pillars of a robust enterprise AV environment.” I have worked at a few companies and talked to lots of people at other companies and the following three pillars seem to really ring true. They are: the AV bill of materials (BOM), the IT service management architecture (ITSM) and the sensor/data footprint.
Videoconferencing seems to be the slowest communication platform to adopt cross-platform compatibility. Sure, in the beginning, when there was barely enough bandwidth to carry video reliably, proprietary ecosystems assured connectivity and transmission. But bandwidth has not been the issue here for quite some time. Can you imagine if the cell phone manufacturers had deployed similar strategies?
