Acoustics 101

Acoustical analysis of any large or small space can be a very daunting task to take on for the average Audio, Video, or IT related position.  The fact that at least 80% of audio products are designed to reduce or minimize the effects that poor design has on rooms makes this even more important.  Most folks just plain don’t know why they need it.  I’m here to explain in small detail why it is the number one factor for Houses of Worship, Corporate, Military, and even Home Theaters!

The following was taken directly from Wikipedia ——>

Acoustical engineering is the branch of engineering dealing with sound and vibration. It is the application of acoustics, the science of sound and vibration, in technology. Acoustical engineers are typically concerned with the manipulation and control of sound.

The primary goal of acoustical engineering is the reduction of unwanted sounds, which is referred to as noise control. Sound can have significant impacts on

human health and well being, and is therefore important to control. Noise control principles are implemented into technology and design in a variety of ways. Applications include the design of noise barriers, sound absorbers, silencers, and buffer zones. The implementation of noise control technology differs in indoor and outdoor environments.

The simple fact is that everyone of us deal with these conditions.  I could go into all forms of Acoustics but I’d rather you do your own research as I’ve done.  Here are some great sites to visit

While these are merely examples of what makes a room “ideal” for propagation of sound, I highly recommend doing some serious research.  You will find that Mathematically, these rooms can be done with some simple steps.  The best of these  is the Acoustics 101 from Auralex.  They’ve done their homework and I give them props for that.   Should you have any need for more in depth knowledge, please let me know.  I’d be happy to give some additional sources for your reading pleasure.

Just remember that Acoustics is the science that allows us to communicate effectively.  It can NEVER be overlooked.
