The Cable Diaries: Watch ESPN and HBO Go Added to the Apple TV! Game Changer?

espn-hbogo-appletvAnd the saga continues in my quest to decide whether or not we are canceling cable at the end of July (when our contract with Schmime Schwarner Schmamble is up).

It was announced today that the Watch ESPN and HBO Go apps have been integrated into the latest Apple TV update!

I’ve mentioned before that my husband and I LOVEEEE our Apple TV – and I’ve mentioned before that we are HUGE sports buffs (did I REALLY just use the term “sports buff”? Yes, yes I did).

Well, needless to say, I’m PRETTY dang excited that these apps have been included in the latest Apple TV update. I should note that I haven’t done the update yet, but I plan on doing it tonight. I’ll be interested to see how it all actually works in practice and not just in theory.

Now, I am also aware that I won’t be able to take advantage of HBO Go because, well, my husband and I aren’t HBO  subscribers. I will, however, be curious to see how the WATCH ESPN app works. I’ve read that you still have to be a cable subscriber to use it. BUT, on the contrary, I know a few people personally who have used the WATCH ESPN app and have accessed it just through their internet service provider. Meaning, they aren’t actually cable subscribers. I haven’t found an article to totally back this up as my data is purely anecdotal, but still, I’ll be curious.

So, if that DOES end up being the case where you can access WATCH ESPN via certain ISPs, that could be a HUGE game changer for us. (Yes, I just used the term game changer. I know, I’m a writing cliche).

Anyway – I was a bit excited when the latest Apple TV update was announced today, so I figured I’d share my initial thoughts with you guys. What do YOU think? Do you think this is a big addition or do you think it’s basically another marketing tactic for Apple? I’d love to hear your thoughts.
