planar leyard product line

Planar announced an expansion to the company’s product portfolio with a new family of Leyard LED display solutions Wednesday. The solutions are designed to support “standard pitch, outdoor and rental and staging applications.” Available in the U.S. and Canada for digital-out-of-home (DOOH), retail, hospitality, sports and entertainment, and other mainstream applications, the new Leyard LED product offerings reinforce Planar’s commitment to offer a comprehensive portfolio of advanced visualization technologies that addresses an even wider range of markets and customers.

I recorded an exclusive interview with Planar’s EVP, Adam Schmidt, to understand the positioning of the Leyard lineup vs the Planar product offerings:

The Leyard LED products feature the latest advancements to support a broad range of contemporary applications such as bright, large standard pitch LED for outdoor signage and billboards, and simplified setup and teardown for rental and staging. The new solutions are available with flexible price points and new services and support options. This product release also introduces a skilled team of sales professionals who have extensive knowledge selling into these applications all over the world, bringing their experience and expertise to North America.

Panasonic Connect Sets Guinness World Record for Largest Projection Mapping Install in Tokyo https://www.ravepubs.com/panasonic-connect-sets-guinness-world-record-for-largest-projection-mapping-install-in-tokyo/ Panasonic Connect Sets Guinness World Record for Largest Projection Mapping Install in Tokyo https://www.ravepubs.com/panasonic-connect-sets-guinness-world-record-for-largest-projection-mapping-install-in-tokyo/#respond Tue, 26 Mar 2024 16:23:34 +0000 https://www.ravepubs.com/?p=264935 Panasonic Connect Sets Guinness World Record for Largest Projection Mapping Install in Tokyo

Panasonic Connect announced that Panasonic’s projection system was chosen to power the world’s largest permanent projection mapping display at the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building in Shinjuku. Certified by GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS as the largest architectural projection-mapped display (permanent), operation commenced on February 25, 2024. Going forward, the system will decorate the building with diverse content programming to revitalize the nighttime economy.

In recent years, adorning urban structures with projection-mapped content has become a popular way to enhance tourism value after dark. Now a familiar sight for foreign and domestic tourists, local people, and children, these attractions reflect the rising demand for immersive entertainment. As the emotive power of projected content continuously advances, a need for sophisticated visual equipment with greater expressive power has emerged. This has resulted in increasingly complex installation, adjustment, and management workflows, exacerbated by a shortage of specialist labor, hindering efficiency.

Here’s a video of the show!:

To address these challenges, Panasonic’s AcroSign digital signage solution was chosen to power the world’s largest permanent projection mapping display on the exterior of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building, along with high-brightness Panasonic projectors and an immersive sound system. The projection mapping system, centrally managed by AcroSign, allows for cloud-based remote management and content updates. Panasonic’s Remote Managed Service also enables system status monitoring from off-site locations, contributing to streamlined management and maintenance.

University of Floria Deploys 200+ Screen Signage Network Using Sony BRAVIA https://www.ravepubs.com/university-of-floria-deploys-200-screen-signage-network-using-sony-bravia/ bravia https://www.ravepubs.com/university-of-floria-deploys-200-screen-signage-network-using-sony-bravia/#respond Fri, 22 Mar 2024 21:05:34 +0000 https://www.ravepubs.com/?p=264883 bravia

Ranked among U.S. News’ five best public universities in the United States, the University of Florida (UF) in Gainesville has been driving innovation and pushing boundaries since 1853. As the diverse and academically rich school evolves, technology plays a key role in enhancing visualization, promoting critical information and facilitating collaboration, while helping to set a standard of excellence.

Among those technologies are Sony’s professional BRAVIA displays. Favored for its combination of superior image quality, easy 24/7 operation, extensive control and integration options and system on a chip (SoC) platform, Sony says these displays are used by leading corporations, retailers and schools like UF.

Over the last year, UF implemented upwards of 200 of Sony’s BZ30 and BZ40 series of professional BRAVIA displays, ranging in size from 32- to 100-inches, in its public spaces. Currently under construction is the school’s Honors Village, a premium housing facility serving honors residents. 116 Sony 55- to 85-inch displays are a part of this new build, and can be found in dorm rooms, common areas and meeting rooms. An additional 18 Sony displays are used for signage in and around the Student Health Care Center, in hallways, and at egress points, where they communicate relevant information. The Traffic Signal Lab, which specializes in signal control testing, features 14 of Sony’s displays. The veterinary surgery teaching lab incorporates 18 32-inch displays which are used at the end of the tables, while the veterinary anatomy lab is standardized on 11 55-inch and five 65-inch models. In the Dean of Students area, 14 55-inch displays are used for digital signage. Additional Sony displays are featured in conference rooms and digital signage setups throughout the university.

Lon Vance, senior engineer and project manager of Audio Visual Systems for the University of Florida’s Audio Visual Systems and Academic Technology helped lead these installations to augment UF’s display capabilities. With a background in high-end home integration, he’s spent his career selecting and implementing the latest technologies and is no stranger to the Sony brand.

Sony says the combination of beneficial features, control options and strong warranty policies that Sony’s professional displays provide helped steer Vance in the company’s direction. In particular, he appreciates the displays’ processing power and true-to-life colors.

“One of the main drivers to use a Sony display is the image processing, which is superior to any other display in the market right now and makes everything look better. With Sony, the reds look like a red, and the details are prominent which is important to our areas that support the arts and architecture. Our pro BRAVIA displays provide a better image and better picture than other displays we’ve used, plus they’re easier to control,” Vance said.

He added, “Additionally, the system on a chip, which we use for digital signage, is excellent and saves you the price of a PC. We use NoviSign digital signage software which can be put right on the display. It’s easy – because the display is Android-based, you just download the app and you’re good to go.”

Sony says its professional BRAVIA displays also work to address the need for displays in high-ambient and direct-light environments. For Vance, they are an ideal solution for UF’s digital signage needs and use in brightly lit hallways. Architecture featuring natural light is often favored by buildings looking for LEED certifications, which is where these displays shine. Vance has the pro BRAVIAs in spaces that filter in direct sunlight and there are no issues with glare.

unnamed (1)

On the topic of sustainability, it is increasingly important to customers and integrators, and Vance acknowledges Sony’s mindful sourcing of materials and manufacturing, as LEED ratings help drive standards and policies and impact decision-making.

Critical to any large university is security,  and Sony says the BRAVIA displays help UF handle this concern with ease due to their RS-232 capabilities.

]“We’re on a layer 3 corporate network and have a network security team that doesn’t want anything on the network that doesn’t have to be. We have a whole VLAN dedicated just to digital signage, so when we plug a display in for digital signage, it’s more secure and can’t be accessed by students. Our control systems are on another subnet so RS-232 control is big,” Vance said.

Vance is tasked with designing, installing, commissioning and programming all of the school’s technology in-house so saving time and money is always top of mind. Another benefit Sony’s displays offer to an installation like Honors Village is the ability to easily duplicate settings across their stable of displays.

“When we’re doing the housing project, we set up one display with all our preferred settings, which we put on a USB drive that we plug into each display, and ‘boom’ it’s all set. You don’t have to sit there and go through a menu 50 times. You simply go into Pro Mode, tell it to import the settings and you’re done. You could easily spend 15 or 20 minutes going through a display and optimizing the settings, so to save 15 or 20 minutes on 116 displays – that’s a lot of time,” Vance said.

Vance also favors the total cost of ownership associated with Sony’s displays, which he finds more favorably priced when compared to alternative solutions. Competitive prices paired with higher-quality images and processing yield a perfect combination for UF.

Next up, UF is working on a residential gaming lounge. Sony says its professional displays, which incorporate high hertz for a “powerful” refresh rate, and the detail and immersion of 4K, will bring students a next-level experience and a much-needed place to unwind.

PPDS, the exclusive global provider of Philips digital signage, interactive displays, videowalls and dvLED, has confirmed its attendance at NAB Show 2024 (April 13-17) in Las Vegas, showcasing its latest suite of solutions for the broadcast industry.

Exhibiting on booth C3544 (Central Hall) at the Las Vegas Convention Center — which attracted more than 65,000 visitors from 166 countries at NAB Show 2023 — PPDS’ attendance follows its “most successful year-to-date” in the North American broadcast market, with Philips Professional Displays becoming the brand of choice for a growing number of leading integrators and set designers.

As part of an increased focus on the broadcast sector, PPDS teams will be joining industry specialists, FX Design Group — an award-winning broadcast set and lighting designer — and Digital Video Group (DVG) — a global supplier and system integrator of broadcast and production systems — on a special “TV studio’ designed stage, as part of a combined ‘total solution” studio offering.

Rounding out the solution combination is tvONE, a leader in video processing, whose CORIOmaster2 will be utilized to drive all content to the various displays throughout the booth. CORIOmaster2 is a video processor with broadcast-compatible inputs combined with pixel-accurate scaling, multi-windowing, eye-catching transitions and 24/7 reliability.

Recent projects — completed by DVG — in which Philips Professional Displays are a prominent fixture, include WAVY TV (Norfolk, Virginia), KTLA-TV (Los Angeles), CBS 4 (Indianapolis, Indiana), and KHON TV (Honolulu, Hawaii), to name just a few.

Solutions featured in these projects and being demonstrated by the PPDS team on their booth at NAB Show 2024 include:

  • Philips Unite LED 6000 Series: Designed for 24/7 use and capable of presenting content in resolutions beyond 8K, Philips Unite 6000 Series dvLED displays provide a backdrop (16:9, 21:9 or 32:9) for any TV studio “looking to make a big impression.” Fine-tuned to suit its surroundings, whether positioned behind TV presenters or used as an additional display during weather forecasts and special news reports or features, Philips Unite 6000 Series guarantees crystal clear performance during broadcasts, delivering superior depths of black, white and colours, matched by the clearest, crispest resolution.
  • Philips Videowall X-Line Series (55”): Designed for 24/7 operation, the Philips Videowall X-Line display has been designed to captivate a viewer’s attention with 4K picture quality. Its high brightness and balanced white calibration ensure flawless text and image visibility both in the studio and to viewers tuning in. Ultra-thin bezels enable spectacular videowall design configurations of any size, while FailOver technology means screens never go blank, automatically switching between primary and secondary inputs to ensure content keeps playing even if the primary source goes down.
  • Philips Signage 4000 Series D-Line (86”): The Android SoC Philips Signage 4000 Series D-Line is designed to engage audiences and is perfect for displaying content chosen to make a powerful impact. Bringing additional opportunities for broadcast, Philips Signage D-Line features QuadViewer, transforming the display into a stylishly framed 2 x 2 videowall with no interior bezels. Also featuring FailOver, Philips Signage D-Line’s modular design helps to extend product lifetimes, with specific components easily replaced, removing the need for entire unit upgrades. This helps to reduce costs and boost sustainability credentials for TV studios by cutting their electronic waste.

Watch How Smode Tech Helps LABLAB Speed Up Virtual Production and Imaging https://www.ravepubs.com/watch-how-smode-tech-helps-lablab-speed-up-virtual-production-and-imaging/ smoke tech lablab https://www.ravepubs.com/watch-how-smode-tech-helps-lablab-speed-up-virtual-production-and-imaging/#respond Thu, 21 Mar 2024 21:30:23 +0000 https://www.ravepubs.com/?p=264818 smoke tech lablab

Smode Tech announced a partnership with LABLAB that uses SMODE software to streamline its experimental video and audio workflows.

A self-described “digital experimentation factory” (fabrique numérique d’expérimentation), LABLAB offers a fully-equipped research and creation space for audiovisual, immersive and interactive experiences. Located in Pôle PIXEL, the creative cluster home to some of the city’s most forward-thinking businesses, LABLAB fosters exchanges between creators working in film, videogaming and the digital arts. The city of Lyon (France) is home to some of the country’s most exciting art events, including the Festival of Lights, the Nuits Sonores, and the Lumière cinema festival.

Jonathan Richer, creative director of creative studio Théoriz and video technical director for LABLAB, says the versatility and responsiveness offered by SMODE, and its compatibility with a wide range of third-party integrations, were the main reasons for his company’s adoption of the SMODE platform.

“We decided to migrate to a new platform as we were looking for better performance and flexibility to host artistic residencies,” says Richer, who explains that LABLAB has welcomed more than a dozen external creative teams, including theatre companies, dance troupes, film companies and digital artists, with diverse AV needs to its campus over the past year, all of whom benefited from the SMODE compositing platform. “SMODE eats up far less performance than [the previous solution], especially in ‘ON AIR’ mode. It is also faster to start up and gives us overall gains on our PC. We can now host artistic teams without spending four hours on just the video element. This is especially true for live inputs, which we can redirect more easily into our pixel space.”

6338a252 c413 69d8 8cb5 d31ed487e3a6

In addition to the performance gains, Richer highlights SMODE’s easy-to-use UI and integration with VIOSO as key elements to LABLAB’s migration to the SMODE-based system. “As soon as you need to manage streams, it’s much simpler,” he explains. “And the ability to import an external mapping calibration file – in our case VIOSO, with whom we also have a partnership – is extremely important.”

The powerful SMODE real-time compositing and media server solution also supports audio-reactive content, with every parameter able to be linked to an audio channel. At LABLAB, SMODE is primarily used with the hub’s immersive sound system, supporting the dance projects, immersive theatre shows and audio-focused interactive installations that are the laboratory’s bread and butter.

Richer is full of praise for the “versatility of the [SMODE] software, which allows different creative and technical approaches” for LABLAB’s myriad clients. “The flexibility of the software, and its open source philosophy in terms of integration, is unparallelled,” he says. “It’s great for us to be able to rely on a solution that doesn’t seem to have any technical limitations.”

He also hails the support offered by the Smode Tech team, who, he says, are always on hand to offer assistance. “Working with SMODE is a great experience – you never get stuck using it,” Richer concludes. “But when you do have questions, the team are always there. We are very happy with their support and how much smoother our process for hosting projects has become with SMODE.”

Tea Shop Chooses nsign.tv’s Digital Signage Platform to Digitize its 100 Stores https://www.ravepubs.com/tea-shop-chooses-nsign-tvs-digital-signage-platform-to-digitize-its-100-stores/ tea shop nsign.tv https://www.ravepubs.com/tea-shop-chooses-nsign-tvs-digital-signage-platform-to-digitize-its-100-stores/#respond Thu, 21 Mar 2024 15:17:44 +0000 https://www.ravepubs.com/?p=264731 tea shop nsign.tv

Tea Shop, the first Spanish chain selling fresh tea in bulk, has chosen nsign.tv‘s digital signage platform to digitize its nearly 100 stores in Spain, Portugal, Italy, Brazil and Argentina to offer a more attractive, dynamic and personalized shopping experience for its customers.

The company, founded in 1990 and offering more than 140 varieties of tea in its stores, was looking to improve the customer experience and adapt to emerging technology trends in the retail sector.

“Our needs were focused on optimizing interaction with consumers, providing detailed information about our products in a dynamic and efficient way, as well as highlighting promotions and special events in a more effective way,” recalls Ana María Avilés Pinto, Marketing & Communication Manager at Tea Shop. “In addition, we were looking for a solution that would allow a more agile and centralized management of content in all our stores,” she adds.

Tea Shop’s choice of nsign.tv software was based on the combination of experience in the market, flexibility in the solutions, integration capacity, technological quality and a good after-sales service, in the words of its Marketing Manager. In most of the stores, a 55” high brightness screen has been installed vertically as a showcase, and another 22” touch screen inside where customers can consult the digital catalog with all the varieties of teas. All these displays are managed by nsign.tv players. The displays enable Tea Shop to enhance the visibility of its wide range of products through dynamic, attractive and up-to-date visual presentation in real time. This makes it easy for shoppers to explore its offerings and discover new varieties, enhancing their in-store experience.

“In addition, the displays offer us the opportunity to effectively communicate promotions, special events and relevant information about our products,” continues Aviles Pinto. “We wanted to strengthen the connection with our customers by providing personalized and updated content in real time.”

With nsign.tv, Tea Shop can manage and display content dynamically on their screens. In addition, the platform allows them to schedule all content, enabling automatic planning and updating of messages on the displays at different times of the day or in response to specific events, and ensuring efficient management of visual information.

“This means Tea Shop can easily adapt messaging, promotions and content based on the latest news, events or inventory changes, keeping customers informed and engaged,” says Aviles Pinto.

Tea Shop’s own Marketing department operates the platform autonomously. “We are greatly helped by its intuitive interface, and thanks to this our team is able to manage and update the content of the displays efficiently, without the need for advanced technical skills,” concludes the manager.

Thanks to nsign.tv, a complete ecosystem has been created to support Tea Shop in the development of its digitalization strategy.

LAVNCH WEEK is one of my favorite virtual events put on by the rAVe team. Not only do we get to hear from a wide variety of industry experts, but we get to chat with other attendees on the LAVNCH platform’s networking feature.

This time around, LAVNCH WEEK looks a little different for me since I’ve been behind-the-scenes — it gave me the pleasure of watching Steph, Gary and others lead panels with industry thought leaders. Let’s dig into what happened during Digital Signage Day of LAVNCH WEEK 9.

LAVNCH WEEK 9 Digital Signage Day Agenda

ICYMI, here’s the lineup from Digital Signage Day:

A Sneak Peek of the SpinetiX Experience Center

Gary Kayye paired up with SpinetiX’ CEO Francesco Ziliani for an inside look at the company’s experience center in Switzerland.

“We had a vision for this building: to create a space of life where people would enjoy working while collaborating and [are able to] experience live shows, events, good restaurants. And we have made sure that digital signage is the heart and soul of this building,” said Zillani.

There’s also a conferencing and executive center with digital signage by SpinetiX, including a 500-seat auditorium. Click here to see the full tour for yourself.

Illuminating Retail Experiences with Digital Signage Innovations

On this panel, moderated by Steph Beckett, Lauren Butcher of Pioneer Group and Laila Hede Jensen of Zenova ApS chatted about retail digital signage and how those experiences can make or break a brick-and-mortar experience.

LAVNCH WEEK 9 Retail Digital Signage Panel

Laila Hede Jensen (left), Lauren Butcher (upper right), Steph Beckett (lower right)

The conversation started off discussing trends and how things are changing in retail digital signage. “We’re moving away from the hardware focus, we’re going into solutions: ‘What is the problem that you want to solve or what is something you want to achieve?’ And that is a journey we’ve been transitioning into for the couple of years” said Hede Jensen.

The trio also discussed how to use technology to bring shoppers back to brick and mortar. “You hear this term ‘influencer marketing’ where everyone is buying something because someone’s promoted it on Instagram. You need to have that messaging aligned throughout socials and in your store,” said Butcher. “You can do things like social media walls in your store which gives [shoppers] the feeling of gamification and makes [your customers] feel more involved. These platforms need to be aligned with brick and mortar stores.”

DSE 2024 Sneak Peek

rAVe’s Emily Dean was joined by David Drain, director of event programs for Digital Signage Experience (DSE). They discussed trends, including artificial intelligence, that are expected to be showcased on the show floor and during educational sessions and dove into the show’s co-location with LDI.

Nanolumens Is Showing How LED Can Do Way More Than Giant Flat Screens Inside Its Immersive Innovation Hub https://www.ravepubs.com/nanolumens-is-showing-how-led-can-do-way-more-than-giant-flat-screens-inside-its-immersive-innovation-hub/ nanolumens gensler innovation hub https://www.ravepubs.com/nanolumens-is-showing-how-led-can-do-way-more-than-giant-flat-screens-inside-its-immersive-innovation-hub/#respond Thu, 21 Mar 2024 04:59:42 +0000 https://www.ravepubs.com/?p=264715 nanolumens gensler innovation hub

ProAV manufacturers are no strangers to providing loaner or demo equipment to end users. What the Nanolumens’ Special Projects Group (SPG) didn’t know is that a single Nixel would come back in a big way. Fast-forward six years to a design question from Jeian Jeong and Michael Schneider of Gensler, a global architect and consulting firm, asking if Nanolumens’ patented Nixel topology could be used as its own independent display. The answer from Nanolumens… a resounding yes!

That’s where Nanolumens excels; taking a concept and making it come to life through complex design, engineering, and ingenuity. For the Innovation Hub project, Nanolumens’ SPG worked intently to determine the complexities and possible outcomes and challenges on this high-profile endeavor.

What started as, “Is this possible?” turned into a project that looked identical to the original project rendering. That in and of itself is very hard to do on most projects; then throw in a complex design, a concave wall, and a new product topology, and that’s the Innovation Hub project.

The concept was to have a main 16:9 display splayed out from the main display to create an industrial, deconstructed video wall display that looked like a circuit board. It needed to have a clean aesthetic, but also seem industrial with parts and cabling exposed – like a TV had exploded … intentionally. The industry has coined a phrase for this as “Tech-o-rating,” and the result was a very tech-forward design with form and functionality.

Former industrial designer and product developer, Dan Rossborough, loves digging into complex projects at Nanolumens. Dan, Director of Nanolumens’ SPG, immediately noted that this project could have many challenges, but he was up to the task. It took four months to develop a new product topology for Nanolumens’ Nixel, which would serve as the base of this design. A mockup of a mitered chassis on a single Nixel was created to emulate independent “Orphan Nixels,” a phrase Dan would coin to describe the Nixel satellite displays that were independent of the main video display. Together with Nanolumens’ R&D team, the SPG developed a “daughter board” that could be affixed to the back of a Nixel. They attached a receive card so that it could be treated as if it were a full array. This bespoke idea left dealing with power and data ports simple.

nanolumens and gensler innovation hub 2

The stand-alone Nixels have their own chassis and on-board data to allow you to stretch and form any array you can imagine, each programmed with its own offset on two coordinated 4K content rasters (32:9 aspect ratio). The Orphan Nixels, housed on bespoke 3D printed FDM chassis, are fully-front-serviceable on 6-axis adjustable telescoping aluminum mount brackets and power/data tethers on rods to the main body. The main display body: mitered top, bottom, and sides to make the whole array appear to be floating, all made possible by our patented Frame-and-Skin Topology.

The Orphan Nixel Chassis were 3D printed and designed with room for the daughter board and Nixel. A custom mount bracket with four axis-adjustment with pitch and yaw to precisely calibrate the new PCB designed Nixels. Prior to using these 3D printed chassis, they were tested with thermal dynamics in mind, and the design proved to be solid. This complex design required the team to work within the constraints of a concave sound attenuating wall made with MDF. Nanolumens couldn’t mount to it, so they had to mount through it. Spacers were used to compress the substrate behind it to allow for precise alignment of the main display and its orphan Nixels. These orphaned 1.5mm Nixels are aligned independently with a tolerance of less than a tenth of a millimeter on a grid face that aligns them precisely.

Another element that aided in the design phase was a mock-up developed at Gensler’s Design Lab, with a section approximately 8 feet wide by 2 feet tall as proof of concept. Nanolumens also hired a media artist to aid in the content mapping of this complex video wall. This, along with a strategic cross-functional team led by Nanolumens’ CEO, Ney Corsino, led to a successful project installation.

The Innovation Hub project utilized Nanolumens’ 1.5mm Nixel in an array that was approximately 17.85’ wide x 12.6” tall. The 1.5mm Nixel has become the standard for high-end fine pixel pitch dvLED products. The main video wall section is 16:9, as are each of the circuit-board style “wings.” And although it has been some time since Nanolumens used 9mm LED panels indoors, they also provided a ceiling suspended video wall. This was more of a lighting feature to create an ambiance in the space. This video wall adds almost a diffused mirror effect of the larger curved display for the Innovation Center.

Like an AV Bridge Over Troubled Water, These Cybersecurity Guidelines Will Ease Your Mind https://www.ravepubs.com/like-an-av-bridge-over-troubled-water-these-cybersecurity-guidelines-will-ease-your-mind/ cybersecurity tips tricks https://www.ravepubs.com/like-an-av-bridge-over-troubled-water-these-cybersecurity-guidelines-will-ease-your-mind/#respond Wed, 13 Mar 2024 23:05:53 +0000 https://www.ravepubs.com/?p=264514 cybersecurity tips tricks

Back in 2021, I wrote a rAVe column entitled “SecuringAV: The Remote Desktop Attack on a Florida Water Treatment Plant.” In this article, I talked about the different forms of infrastructure being targeted by cyberattacks, and connected the attack on the water treatment plant to similar vulnerabilities in AV systems. I also shared some lessons learned from the attack with our readers, about the human element.

Since then, a number of water treatment facilities have been victims of cyberattacks, many of them sharing the same devices, with the same vulnerabilities, making it rather easy for the attackers.

“Following a recent cyberattack at a Pennsylvania water utility, federal officials have confirmed that multiple additional water utilities in the US running the same industrial equipment have been breached by hackers […] at ‘less than 10’ water facilities in different parts of the US […]. In each case, the equipment targeted was the same […] likely by breaking into internet-connected devices with default passwords.”

Wait a second, changing the devices’ default passwords … I think I read about that somewhere on rAVe [PUBS] …

Jan. 26, 2016, Leonard Suskin, “That AMX Backdoor”

“How many installed processors are out in the wild with the admin passwords still set to the factory default?”

Nov. 4, 2016, Scott Tiner, “Security Wake-Up Call”

“Are all the default passwords changed?”

Dec. 2, 2016, Hope Roth, “Practicing Safe Automation”

“Don’t use default passwords.”

Fast forward five years later. In 2021, Scott Tiner, again, in “Lessons From the SolarWinds Hack,” said, “I sure hope that integrators/programmers and installers have always followed rules about passwords, like changing the default, not using the same one across different customers, safely storing them in a password safe, etc.”

Then, just a few months ago, in December of 2023, I discussed the need for using unique passwords in “Highlights From Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s Cybersecurity Advisory.”

Avoid Reusing Passwords

Earlier this month, Megan A. Dutta warned readers about easily compromised passwords in her article, “Exposing the Most Vulnerable Passwords of 2024.”

Scott Tiner talked about passwords again this year, in his article, “Security Versus Convenience.” Scott also noted how Chinese hackers are targeting U.S. Infrastructure, which brings us back to our discussion about the water treatment facility attacks. This is happening so much, the United States government has recently issued a document, “Top Cyber Actions For Securing Water Systems,” with basic steps I believe that can be easily applied to most AV systems and AV integration firms.

Try it. Just swap “water” or “OT” for “AV.” For example, Step 3 is “Change Default Passwords Immediately.”

“Require unique, strong, and complex passwords for all water [AV] systems, including connected infrastructure. Weak default or insecure passwords are easy to discover and exploit, and they may allow cyber threat actors to make changes to a water [AV] systems’ operational processes. This can negatively impact public health and safety. Change default or insecure passwords and implement multifactor authentication (MFA) where possible. Focus on deploying MFA to IT infrastructure, such as email, to make it difficult for threat actors to access OT [AV] systems. Consider asking manufacturers to eliminate default passwords.”

Here are the other steps listed in the Top Actions for Securing Water [AV] Systems document:

  • Reduce Exposure to the Public-Facing Internet
  • Conduct Regular Cybersecurity Assessments
  • Conduct an Inventory of OT/IT [AV/IT] Assets
  • Develop and Exercise Cybersecurity Incident Response and Recovery Plans
  • Backup OT/IT [AV] Systems
  • Reduce Exposure to Vulnerabilities [by patching]
  • Conduct Cybersecurity Awareness Training

Chances are, you are already providing some form of employee training that could easily include cybersecurity awareness modules. You can also work security into your end-user training, teaching them how to have more secure meetings, and how your technology helps to protect their privacy.

There are plenty of free resources in the PDF guidelines and online at CISA.gov and here on rAVe!

Now, please, for crying out loud, go change those default passwords! Do NOT make us ask you again!

LG Business Solutions announced that Atomic Golf, the new Las Vegas golf-based attraction set to open on March 22, to outfit every step of the customer journey with digital experiences from the parking lot to the tee line. According to Brian Birckbichler, Senior Vice President of Golf Entertainment at Atomic Golf, the vast digital signage network will be a core element of the guest experience and will deliver the famous Las Vegas ambiance of bright lights and non-stop entertainment.

“From the moment guests arrive at Atomic Golf, they will be surrounded by vibrant LG digital displays showing live sports events, messaging, wayfinding, promotions, welcome messages for groups and real-time game information in every hitting bay,” Birckbichler said. “As a tech-forward cashless venue in the convention capital of the world, competition is fierce, and experiences are always evolving to impress guests and create excitement. Working with LG allowed us to leverage their vast product catalog and robust digital signage capabilities to create a property-wide network that enhances engagement while providing simple system control and maintenance to ensure reliable daily operations.”

The project utilizes LG’s webOS operating system to manage the digital signage network, with SAVI Controls software delivering content to the LCD displays over a single MoIP cable. Atomic Golf has the flexibility to show broadcast programs, in-house content and marketing messages on any display at any time, including creating frames, tickers and more. The staff’s job is made as simple as possible, too, with the ability to turn the entire digital signage network on and off with a single button, eliminating the hassle and time involved in individually managing more than 250 displays.

“Atomic Golf has designed an entertainment space unlike any other, and LG is proud to partner with them on the project to offer design assistance and product guidance, ensuring maximum effect and operational excellence,” said Mike Kosla, Senior Vice President, LG Business Solutions USA. “By using a single-supplier digital signage network, Atomic Golf empowers onsite experience managers to exert instant control over every display through a single platform that allows for individual display control, system-wide content changes and provides automatic alerts for any troubleshooting or maintenance needs.”

To fulfill Atomic Golf’s wide range of display needs, the signage and integration experts at Simply Connected determined that LG’s experience, product selection and advanced webOS operating system with native SAVI integration capability made LG Business Solutions the ideal digital display partner. The integration firm is responsible for installation and ongoing maintenance of the signage network’s more than 250 digital displays along with the property’s audio components, wiring, video distribution, control system, networking equipment, security and surveillance.

Various LG LCD displays ranging from 49 inches to a whopping 110 inches will grace guests’ every step with sports content, promotions and anything else the company wants to showcase. Whether they get drinks at the Bottoms Up sports bar, play high-tech games in the Astrocade arcade or tee off for an exhilarating round of competitive golfing games, LG screens will provide consistent branding and entertainment.

A separate firm, Jones Sign, was responsible for installing the property’s LG DVLED (direct-view light-emitting diode) displays, which guests first encounter at the entrance, where they pass under a custom-sized LG outdoor DVLED display that stretches overhead.

After collaborating to design the layout and construction of the hitting bays, Atomic Golf and Simply Connected outfitted all 103 of them with a custom-designed ball dispenser that features a 49-inch vertically-mounted LG outdoor display to deliver high brightness and excellent resilience in all types of weather, making it the ideal game information display. LG’s webOS platform and software from SAVI make the vertical displays highly customizable, with options for split-pane, dual-source content and other advanced capabilities. Each tee line cabana will also house a 55-inch LG display for guest-controlled TV programming.

Visitors will be captivated by the LG displays on the ceilings and floors as they enter the state-of-the-art Cosmic Lounge. VIP guests will have their luxury suites equipped with both 110-inch and 136-inch high-definition display screens for sports and entertainment viewing.

Overall, a broad range of indoor and outdoor LG DVLED products are utilized throughout the property with pixel pitches ranging from 10mm outdoor displays all the way to the .7mm LG MAGNIT display.

Boston Medical Group Does Digital Signage Using the AxisTV Signage Suite https://www.ravepubs.com/boston-medical-group-does-digital-signage-using-the-axistv-signage-suite/ boston medical https://www.ravepubs.com/boston-medical-group-does-digital-signage-using-the-axistv-signage-suite/#respond Tue, 12 Mar 2024 19:33:25 +0000 https://www.ravepubs.com/?p=264459 boston medical

Boston Medical Group has successfully transitioned its AxisTV 9 digital signage network to AxisTV Signage Suite, opening users and patients to a broader universe of features and benefits that add up to a more compelling digital signage experience.

The digital signage network is one of many responsibilities that Tahssin Alani carries as the IT department’s AV lead, and since joining the staff 10 years ago he had three main objectives: improve visual resolution, enhance functionality and extend the network to new locations. While the third element has happened naturally over time due to departmental enthusiasm, the switch to AxisTV Signage Suite has had a powerful effect on the first two.

“We’ve grown from 20 to 50 screens over my time here, and now have 29 departments with a presence on the network,” said Alani, whose official title is Field Service Analyst, Audio Visual Support. “Some departments contribute by advertising their services, and our communications department manages most of the content, which includes welcome messages, health notices, organizational awards, and our ‘Rewriting Healthcare’ series which features stories from patients, community partners, doctors and other staff members. I designed the templates for them to create layouts, and they publish the content. AxisTV Signage Suite makes that process very quick and easy, and the visual quality has substantially improved. The colors really pop, and people pay attention to the screens.”

It’s essential that people pay attention to the screens, as Visix developed a special application to keep visitors informed about wait times. Boston Medical Group’s strategy includes mixing in wait time slides with colorful public service announcements, informational slides and other content to keep screens lively and dynamic. All 29 departments active on the network leverage the wait time application to keep patients relaxed and eliminate repetitive trips to the front desk.

Alani says a small number of people from each department can adjust wait times from their desktop, laptop or mobile device by simply logging into the application, selecting their department and selecting a time interval from a drop-down menu. “It removes the ‘how long’ question from being asked over and over by multiple patients, reducing stress for all involved,” said Alani. “Visix created a very simple, orderly and intuitive interface with this application that has proved incredibly useful. It takes seconds to make an adjustment, and the changes are immediately replicated to the corresponding display. If the wait time was changed from 30 to 15 minutes, that adjustment will appear the next time the slide appears in the rotation.”

While Visix initially built this functionality into Boston Medical Group’s AxisTV 9 network, the transition to AxisTV Signage Suite offers many new possibilities that were previously not available. Alani is especially enthused about the software calendar application, which can connect with Outlook for conference room bookings and other departmental needs. He says this will bring value to all departments but particularly in the more executive and operations-focused buildings, such as the FGH Building and Carter Conference Center.

Alani anticipates continued expansion of the network into new buildings, and there are plans to add screens in satellite facilities. The same AxisTV Signage Suite platform will serve these other locations, including the Brockton Behavioral Health Center about 25 miles to the south. Separately, he is in discussions with Visix to roll out a wayfinding pilot.

“The growth of our network has been demand-driven,” said Alani, noting that new departments tend to come on as they learn how other departments benefit from its use. “The fact that we can do much more with this new platform will drive further expansion. We’re only using about 50 percent of AxisTV Signage Suite’s capabilities. There’s still a lot to learn, and we’ll gradually roll out new features and applications over time.”

Retiring in the AV Industry: Advice From Someone Who’s Done it Twice https://www.ravepubs.com/retiring-in-the-av-industry-advice-from-someone-whos-done-it-twice/ retirement road ahead https://www.ravepubs.com/retiring-in-the-av-industry-advice-from-someone-whos-done-it-twice/#respond Tue, 12 Mar 2024 17:14:05 +0000 https://www.ravepubs.com/?p=264444
retirement road ahead

By Ron DeVoe

Since I have retired from the AV industry TWICE, I have been asked to offer advice or recognition of possible fallacies in retirement enjoyment. Because ownership of an AV business requires an enormous amount of mental energy for time and resource management, goal setting and attainment, cash flow and keeping up with the technology — turning off that daily, thought-provoking faucet proves to be impossible.

My greatest recommendation to the potential AV business owner/retiree is to first take a sabbatical for six weeks completely away from the business with no contact or communication. Many find that nervousness and frustration set in within a few nanoseconds, but that can be the best test to determine if one can really depart from a lifetime of work.
Understand, that as I have mentioned above, I’m on my second retirement — beware “they keep pulling you back”.

So, what are some of the challenges and possible ways to combat the “f………ing (frustrating) retirement?

ron devoe retirement 2
So, what are some of the challenges and possible ways to combat the “f………ing (frustrating) retirement?

Physical

Mother Nature seems to be on the lookout for the instant one retires to call out the semi-neglect of one’s multi-decade mass of skin and bones. I have one friend who confessed “every part of my body hurts and what does not hurt, itches.” Your joints can all be surgically repaired and then you will be placed in the loving and caring arms of therapists who will delight in providing PT … Physical Torture. Both the surgeons and the sadists delight in the fact that you will need even more joint work. Eyeballs, teeth and skin can be resurfaced and certain procedures that send film crews into your private parts are a coming attraction. Enjoy!

Financial

While I know plans were made to live in the lap of luxury, someone is always tightening that lap. “Out with the old and in with the new” is far less fun when it ushers in new roofs, new AC compressors and a new transmission in one month. The above medical discussion also continues to drain the remnants of your wallet.

Social

I attended my 55th high school reunion last fall, and was shocked by the number of older people. When I saw myself in the group picture, I was sorry to see how well I fit in. The new retiree will possibly find that what was late is now early. Restaurants are loud and you cannot hear yourself eating. Social events are yearned for like a root canal. Conversations that include “in my day” or “do you remember when” beget immediate drowsiness among your party. There are few social events requesting BYOC (Bring Your Own Curmudgeon).

Mental

Few AV retirees spend multiple hours in front of their new enormous 42” or 65” or 85” TV to delight in back-to-back episodes of “The Andy Griffith Show” or “Rawhide.” Some spend their time in front of their computer still trying to find that pearl of wisdom lurking in social media. Others are so uplifted by the enlightened chatter of network news that they have no problem forcing a perpetual frown.

OK, so now you’re aware of all of the challenges that are experienced by most retirees from the AV industry. Now, here are a few suggestions that have helped me to make this era in my life fulfilling, meaningful and enjoyable. I hope they do the same for you.

ron devoe retirement 3
  • Volunteer: There are countless opportunities to give back using your talent and experience. Beware that you may find the management, adherence to time and poorly run meetings a stepping stone to trip you into deeper commitments.
  • Self employment: Seek remote working positions as a board member or working on an advisory council. I found that my involvement as a day trader satisfied my “risk/reward” compulsion. The reward is rising early to see financial news, making trades and counting my pennies in the late afternoon.
  • Travel: I know that this is a long-sought reason for retiring. Overseas travel or cruises to far off lands are both exhilarating and life changing. However, it is not cheap and can greatly stretch that retirement budget if one dips into the nest egg too much. It is great to rediscover the U.S. Pack up your car with your spouse or significant other and hit the road to those places that you have not experienced or those that you visited and wished you had spent more time.
  • Family: Most of the retirees from the AV world now have grown children. Work conflicts often prevented coaching, participating in and or attending the numerous sporting events, concerts, recitals and so forth that your children were involved with. My daughters have been kind enough to provide me with grandchildren, and while it is probably a moral imperative that we older ones attend such functions, the enjoyment is insurmountable.
  • Bend, stretch, but don’t break: Golf, pickleball, Tai Chi and Yoga should be your new alternative to rock climbing, balance beam competitions and rugby.
  • Date Night: If you wooed your significant other back whenever by going out, get back to it. Dressing up and watching a play or enjoying a concert gets you out on the town and out of a rut.
  • Let the creative juices flow: I know many of my fellow AV retirees who have picked up their musical instruments and are picking or playing their way into some gigs. I know some who are painting, carving, singing and writing. I myself, am attempting to write screenplays and I am grateful to that number of people who have read my script — both of them.
ron devoe retirement4

The suggestions above only reflect my thoughts and ideas and may or may not be credible or applicable to all. But I have one last important thing to say: Our AV industry, though growing, is still a small community. I am thrilled to see the family-owned AV businesses pass down from generation to generation, giving greater meaning to the “AV family.” Retirees are still in the family and that family wants continued contact.

PPDS, the exclusive global provider of Philips Professional Displays, is delighted to announce the installation of 13 “game-changing” Philips interactive displays at Oracle Red Bull Racing’s renovated MK-7 marketing team offices in Milton Keynes, UK, sending team collaboration and creative capability into overdrive.

Signaling the latest evolution of an ever-deepening partnership with the reigning Formula One World Championship Team – for which PPDS has been an official Team Supplier since 2022 – this exciting new project continues Oracle Red Bull Racing’s relentless focus on leading from the front both on and off the track and adhering to its internal motto: ‘to win and to do it differently’.

Housed in ORBR’s spectacular MK-7 offices in Milton Keynes – 50 miles (80kms) north of London – the Oracle Red Bull Racing brand continues to reach new heights, with a fan base that pervades all corners of the Earth.

With communications increasingly a key focus, its creative marketing team has expanded exponentially in recent years, representing the Oracle Red Bull Racing brand across all marketing channels, including its highly successful ‘Paddock’ fan reward site, partner program and, of course, its growing social media presence (4.5m followers on ‘X’ and 11.6m on Instagram to name just two).

In the fast-paced world of F1 racing, standing still is not an option, and teamwork is essential. With a proud track record of supporting ORBR with a range of custom-built solutions – from its headquarters through to the stylish Oracle Red Bull Racing hospitality suite in the Paddock Club – PPDS was the standout partner of choice to revolutionize the way its marketing teams communicate and collaborate, helping to drive new ideas and inspire greater project outcomes.

Following detailed discussions covering the ORBR marketing teams’ needs and ambitions for today and into the future, a fleet of 10 Philips Collaboration C-Line displays (65”-86”) – based on the Windows (8000 Series) and Android (6000 Series) OS – were integrated into the marketing team’s management offices, meeting rooms, and shared spaces, such as the ‘Break Out Zone’ and ‘Energy Lounge’.

Designed to enhance and inspire, the Philips Collaboration C-Line displays have proved themselves an instant game changer for the Oracle Red Bull Racing marketing team, transforming each space into a hive of activity, bringing new energy and enhanced productivity, and new collaborative working capabilities, throughout.

Every Opinion Counts

Bringing teams together like never before, the Philips Collaboration C-Line displays provide the marketing team with advanced and seamless wireless sharing capabilities, with up to 64 devices (people) able to simultaneously connect to the screen, for quick content switching between participants in the room as well as remotely.

Combining multi-touch technology with the Philips Collaboration displays’ whiteboard mode, users can write and draw directly on the screen – with near-zero latency, for more natural user experiences – either by hand or with dedicated markers, with all actions streamed back to all connected devices for easy file sharing.

High Impact Performance

Complementing the Philips Collaboration displays, two imposing 98” Philips Signage 4000 Series D-Line displays have been installed side by side in the marketing team’s ‘Paddock’ area, which features grandstand seating, with a single 86” model, installed in the Oracle Suite. Each is used to provide a variety of functions, including live coverage of track action and other associated events, delivering important team news, results and other energising content to the team.

One of PPDS’ most flexible and versatile Android SoC displays to date, the Philips Signage 4000 Series ensures all content is delivered with power and precision, fine-tuned to ensure specific colour and contrast guidelines for ORBR are achieved at all times.

For maximum versatility, the team also benefits from the Philips 4000 Series’ QuadViewer feature, transforming single displays into stylishly framed 2 x 2 videowalls with no interior bezels. Marketing teams can connect and play content from up to four independent sources simultaneously on the same screen – a great solution when multiple feeds need to be visible, such as broadcasting qualifying sessions or the race itself. A video showcasing the installations can be viewed here.

“Game Changer”

Discussing the project, Olly Hughes, Chief Marketing Officer at Oracle Red Bull Racing, commented: “We looked at several vendors, but PPDS and Philips Professional Displays were the ones that had the best product to answer what we were looking for.

“Getting the marketing teams together, working on content collaboratively, viewing it in sharp, bold contrast, on quality displays is really important. These Philips Professional Displays are a game changer and the perfect solution for our marketing office environment.”

Tim de Ruiter, Business Development Director at PPDS, added: “In the fast-paced world of F1 racing, there’s simply no substitute for teamwork. Technology, whether for building vehicles or creating inspirational and highly innovative marketing campaigns, plays a crucial role in achieving goals and ambitions. After meeting with the marketing team at MK-7, it was clear that bringing each team within the busy department together and providing them with the tools to collaborate on projects, share ideas and, crucially, celebrate their successes, was a key focus.

“It was a challenge we were happy to accept, and we are proud of the impact these state-of-the-art Philips Professional Displays, designed to meet the highest levels of demand, such as in F1, have already made in short space of time. We look forward to continuing to partner with Oracle Red Bull Racing, supporting them as they edge even further ahead of their competitors.”

The Power of Low Voltage in the Sustainability Movement https://www.ravepubs.com/the-power-of-low-voltage-in-the-sustainability-movement/ battery power sustainability https://www.ravepubs.com/the-power-of-low-voltage-in-the-sustainability-movement/#respond Tue, 05 Mar 2024 21:01:13 +0000 https://www.ravepubs.com/?p=262997 battery power sustainability

Whether you know it or not, low voltage is an important key to energy conservation now and in the future. We are seeing demand for electricity increase year over year due to the increase in high consumption electrical devices (such as electrified vehicles, heat pumps, air conditioners, on-demand water heaters and so on). Married with the longer use of these devices during inclement weather, we are also seeing how electricity is the main ingredient to our society’s ability to function normally and comfortably.

This increase in power demands, though sold as a greener option, may in fact continue to drive climate-change-related issues if the electricity comes from fossil fuels. So, to keep up with this increasing electrical demand, we’ve seen discussion of cleaner options such as nuclear, geothermal, solar, wind, water, etc. However, with the exception of nuclear and a couple other innovations, these options are still struggling to meet current demand, and storage of these environmental power sources becomes an issue — wind doesn’t always blow and the sun doesn’t always shine.

But this is where low voltage can come in to save the day. This is great news for those of us in the AV-C (audio-visual-control) and IT (information technology) industries, as we are low voltage experts.

Our AV and IT industries have been driving low voltage innovation from the earliest of days. Remember your old CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) display or projector? Well, that CRT would consume ~400 watts of energy, compared to an LED display at ~155 watts. Or, remember your incandescent light bulb? Those bulbs typically burn 60 watts of power to get about ~800 lumens — we can achieve that same lumen output with a measly 10 watts LED light.

Our CRT projectors and displays not only ate more power (as mentioned above), but also generated excessive heat. In contrast, the LED counterparts not only use less energy, but also run cooler while drawing less power — meaning reductions in heating and cooling costs.

This also translates to advances in amplifiers from Class A, A+B, etc. into class D and T amplifiers, or tube versus solid state where we can see up to 80% efficiency, and theoretically achieve 100% efficiency in class D technologies. Audio is another beast altogether, though, so I’ll save that in-depth discussion for later.

At this scale, you may ask, “So what? What will saving 10 watts or even 100 watts here or there do? And what does this have to do with AV?” Well, as it turns out, a lot!

Let’s scale this up, just as an example. When my company designs hotels, tower projects and resorts, we see an excess of 25,000 lightbulbs with over 1,000 display devices, more than 10-15 high power audio amplifiers and a host of PoE network switches. If we just take lightbulbs as an example, we can save ~50 watts per bulb simply by changing them. With this change, we can save ~1,250,000 (yes, one million) watts! That’s approximately ~10,000 amps at 120 volts. Considering a typical residential power hookup is at a maximum of 400 amps at 240v, that’s a huge savings! Especially considering this example is one building, one technology and one simple change.

Since the early days, audiovisual professionals have been called low voltage technicians, working at low voltage integration firms. Over the years, the term “low voltage” has slowly converged into the term “technology.” When we look at technology, we primarily see devices within the low voltage realm, converting high voltage to low voltage. Our devices use our fiber and copper category and coaxial cables to transmit information, as well as to power items like USB-C cameras or PoE endpoint devices. So even though our receptacle may be rated to handle 15 amps at 120 volts, we may only be drawing 1-2 amps on 12, 24 or 48 volts of power. Or transmitting 30 watts down a category cable to our endpoint device, eliminating needing localized power. Not only do we send low voltage power, but these devices send and receive digital control signals, audio signals, video signals and a slew of other digital ones and zeros with that power. Truly awesome compared to line voltage!

So, with that context in mind, let’s lean into programs and certifications such as LEED, ASHRAE or, more recently and specifically for the audiovisual industry, SAVe. These acronyms are for rating systems, certifications and better practices to ensure a greener future that conserves energy for future generations to succeed. Except for SAVe, the low voltage technology experts have been largely left out of the conversation. Instead, these programs revolve more around the physical built environment, the architecture and building practices, where more established, long-life trades like electrical and mechanical are under the microscope. AV and IT are considered a luxury item or pragmatic requirement for communication or security.

But hey, AV and low voltage isn’t a small industry anymore, we’re not a newcomer that has general contractors scratching their heads about what we do. We are established, certified and in the trade schedule. Our technologies are everywhere! In your pocket, in your home, in your car, in the airplane and in the built and natural environments that surround us!

So, when we factor in my simple one tower, one device metric — just fathom what we could do at scale if low voltage technologies had a leading seat at the table. Running smart lights with PoE and data and automated control for on/off/dimming tied to temperature sensors and weather data. The return on investment (ROI) is massive for owners of these large developments, in addition to the benefit of saving energy and our environment.

So as we welcome 2024, I ask that we aim to be champions of promoting a greener, cleaner option by leveraging our industry’s low voltage abilities. We can be stewards of innovation and help educate the architects, designers and other trades and specialists about the advantages of low voltage smart technologies.

For us, it’s not new to design a system that can be completely PoE, from speakers to lights. We have a responsibility to educate others to know these options exist. They need to understand how we can help in LEED certifications and ASHRAE targets. AV professionals can help save clients’ money through energy conservation while having more luxury and innovation in every new project. We can and will be one of the keys to the green transition going forward.

Lifesize Plans, that patented 1:1 scale walkthrough building experience using projection mapping, has partnered with Panasonic and signage integrator, Think, to install 11 PT-RTZ990 1-Chip DLP projectors across its showroom, enabling people to view their home through 1:1 scale building plans taken from architect drawings, before it is built.

Creating an immersive experience to showcase a house before it is built requires reliable technology that delivers a high-quality and vivid projection. As such, Lifesize Plans opted for Panasonic’s projection technology to visualize building plans on a 1:1 scale, delivering up to 10,000lm of brightness, providing an immersive experience of the pre-built home.

Lifesize projection mapping 2

Lifesize Plans has used Panasonic’s Geometry Manager Pro software to adjust the multiple projections with edge blending of up to 100 images, colour matching, and digital image enlargement (up to x10 zoom), which enables plans to be seamlessly projected across the 60,000 ft2 showroom floor.

With ceilings that are six metres high (20 feet), it was critical that Lifesize Plans selected projectors that require minimum maintenance and are easy to install. The lightweight chassis design of the PT-RZ990 makes this possible, offering 20,000 hours of maintenance-free operation, with lasting brightness and colour uniformity. The PT-RZ990 series of projectors feature a hermetically sealed optical engine and heat-pump based filter-less cooling design. This keeps the projectors at the optimum temperature, and prevents dust ingress, especially when objects are being positioned on the showroom floor, to accompany the projection.

lifesize projection mapping 3

Panasonic’s Smart Projector Control mobile application enables Lifesize Plans to remotely manage the projectors from the ground. This includes the deployment of automatic lens focus, switch inputs, and monitor projection status – and adjust the projected images according to the size of the house.

Emma O’Donoghue, Director at Lifesize Plans: “We test drive cars before we buy them, and a home is a much bigger investment. By projecting architectural plans on a life-size scale, we create immersive experiences where people walk through their homes before they build them. To make this a reality we needed the best visual quality delivered by Panasonic projectors.”

Creative Realities Partners With IceBox Network for DOOH https://www.ravepubs.com/creative-realities-partners-with-icebox-network-for-dooh/ creative realities icebox https://www.ravepubs.com/creative-realities-partners-with-icebox-network-for-dooh/#respond Tue, 27 Feb 2024 18:37:38 +0000 https://www.ravepubs.com/?p=263841 creative realities icebox

Digital signage and Creative Realities announced its partnership with IceBox Network, a new ad-based network concept under digital out-of-home (DOOH) technology provider Digi Point Media, to revolutionize retail advertising with exclusive digital display placements atop ice suppliers across retail stores for the first time. This collaboration will “leverage Creative Realities’ ReflectView CMS and Reflect AdLogic platform as well as integrated programmatic platforms to quickly distribute content, track ads and provide automatic ad placement.”

With exclusive rights to install digital displays atop merchandising units of the largest ice provider in the country, IceBox Network has the ability to reach “approximately 85,000 end points with merchandisers spread across 37 states, with the potential of creating one of the most extensive and widespread advertising networks available.” These merchandisers are prominently featured in major retailers, including grocery chains, hardware stores and pharmacies, as well as liquor stores to establish retail media networks where none previously existed. With its patent-pending method of installing displays on refrigerated merchandisers, the IceBox Network also fully complies with regulations related to alcoholic beverages and advertising in Texas and California, with plans to expand to additional states soon.

Creative Realities’ digital signage platform ReflectView, a content management system (CMS), serves as the backbone of the network, facilitating the “seamless distribution of content across the vast network of digital displays.” Reflect AdLogic not only tracks all advertisements but also offers an ad serving programmatic feature, ensuring targeted and efficient ad delivery. The company’s expertise extends to procuring the necessary hardware, including 48-inch stretch displays, and implementing cellular-based networks for reliable connectivity. Additionally, Creative Realities’ Reflect eXperience enhances local spot control, providing advertisers with precise targeting capabilities. Creative Realities’ media sales team will also play a supplemental role in connecting advertisers to the IceBox Network.

Creative Realities’ involvement not only “enhances the in-store shopping experience but also streamlines the ad buying process by connecting IceBox Network with advertisers directly.” The companies say marketers, advertisers and stores alike reap advantages from this partnership as it provides new locations for placements and a simple, scalable network for national ad buys with high impressions — allowing the digital displays to generate incremental revenue through advertising placement. With initial deployment underway and plans to reach 6,000 locations in the next three years, this partnership marks a significant step in transforming traditional digital signage into a retail media network that monetizes.

BlueZoo Adds Audience Measurement Tech to BrightSign Series-5 Media Players https://www.ravepubs.com/bluezoo-audience-measurement-brightsign/ bluezoo retail media networks brightsign https://www.ravepubs.com/bluezoo-audience-measurement-brightsign/#respond Tue, 27 Feb 2024 18:32:09 +0000 https://www.ravepubs.com/?p=263834 bluezoo retail media networks brightsign

BlueZoo has announced impression measurement software for BrightSign’s new Series-5 digital media players. The incorporation of BlueZoo technology in software form enables BrightSign to offer in-store digital signage that now includes measurement of audience reach, dwell time, flow and related analytics in real time without the need to purchase, install and maintain multiple hardware sensors throughout each location as part of retailers’ in-store Retail Media Networks.

BlueZoo measures the presence and movement of people in a manner that is “accurate and privacy-protecting,” as well as cost effective and scalable. BlueZoo passively collects smartphone Wi-Fi probes using both BlueZoo proprietary sensor hardware as well as using third-party hardware like BrightSign digital media players. BlueZoo has delivered its sensor software on BrightSign Series-3 and Series-4 media players since 2018.

BlueZoo’s software facilitates managing large constellations of sensors from the cloud, including bulk operations using BlueZoo’s dashboard and mobile app. BlueZoo customers can define complex customized reports that are sent automatically by email every day, week, month or quarter to their own customers, partners and employees. These reports can include both aggregate and non-aggregated sensor analytics, including visits/impressions, visitors, dwell time, unique visitors and unique visitor recurrence. BlueZoo Winter 2024 dramatically expands reporting capabilities by allowing individual reports to deliver multiple report tiles, for different sensors and different time periods, and to overlay analytics describing multiple time periods.

Sora Text-to-Video AI Changes the World: Artists Dread It, Producers Love It, Governments Both Fear and Embrace It https://www.ravepubs.com/ai-text-to-video-sora/ openai sora https://www.ravepubs.com/ai-text-to-video-sora/#respond Mon, 26 Feb 2024 14:01:17 +0000 https://www.ravepubs.com/?p=263742 openai sora

We all knew it was coming, but we didn’t expect it so soon.

OpenAI, famous for its ChatGPT and Dall-E free-to-use AI system, unveiled a new text-to-video service to select researchers, beta testers, developers and policymakers. “Sora” generates up to one-minute videos from text prompts. You type in a sentence or two as a prompt and it creates your video.

Check this out …

The Sora sample videos reflect realistic and other styles, producing digital video content for advertising, digital signage, social media, corporate websites — for everything and anywhere video appears.

Hollywood is safe, as there are processing power limitations — it can only create about a minute of content. But when OpenAI turns even this small tap on, it will flood social media and create a new digital world. Video by anyone. And everyone.

If you are old enough, you’ll remember how “desktop publishing” changed the world. What Sora has now wrought is a 10x bigger disruption factor.

With realistic scenes that include complex interactions, multiple characters and detailed backgrounds, Sora distinguishes itself with emotionally expressive characters with consistent style and character presence across multiple video shots.

In short, it seems very real.

Sora serves as a foundation for models that can understand and simulate the real world, a capability OpenAI believes this will be an important milestone for achieving Artificial General Intelligence. Sora can also extend existing videos with new frames or take an existing still image and make a video from it by animating the content with accuracy and attention to small detail.

This is controversial wizardry that scares the hell out of some content owners while other content creators cheer it on. OpenAI knows this. The company will take several critical safety steps before making Sora available by subscription (similar to ChaptGPT, Dall-E and its AI product family).

The company has turned to “red teamers ” ( domain experts in areas like misinformation, hateful content and bias )  who will run “adversarial” tests. OpenAI are also busy building tools to help detect misleading content, tools like a detection classifier that can tell when a video was truly generated by Sora. According to OpenAI, they will include C2PA metadata if they deploy the model in an OpenAI product.

I will admit, however, that Sora 1.0 is not perfect. Despite its innovative approach, it still faces challenges with complex physics, accurate cause/effect representation and maintaining precise spatial/temporal details.

Yet Sora is already a giant leap forward in digital video content, a leap that might cross Moore’s chasm before proper harnesses can prevent its misuse.

Plus, with universal hardware for hanging or free-standing video walls, the families limit the need for additional hardware. The new models also retain features that support single-person setup such as a lightweight design and quick-lock system.

Planar says the release of these updated versions strengthens its portfolio of visualization technologies designed for on-camera use, temporary events and fixed installations. (In addition to high brightness, Planar says customers also benefit from finer pixel pitches and enhanced viewing angles for outstanding visual performance.) Plus, with built-in LED corner protection, Planar says all three updated video wall solutions limit damage caused by setup and teardown to help extend product lifespan.

New Planar Venue Pro Series indoor LED video wall displays support quick setup and disassembly for corporate events, trade shows and beyond. The next-generation solution introduces new 1.5 and 2.9 millimeter pixel pitch models to round out the lineup’s existing 1.9 and 2.5 millimeter models.

Following its introduction in September 2022, the next-generation Planar Venue Pro VX Series offers “improved contrast, lower scan ratio and higher frame rates for unparalleled in-camera and on-camera performance.” The line of indoor fine pixel pitch LED video wall displays is designed to revolutionize the production of lifelike content such as recorded, streamed or broadcast video. Models are now available in 1.5 and 1.9-millimeter pixel pitches and are compatible with Brompton LED processors and LED controllers from Colorlight.

Optimized for people in need of a bright outdoor solution with relatively close viewing distances, the Planar Luminate Pro Series models are designed to combat direct sunlight. The family is available with narrow 2.5 and 2.9 millimeter pixel pitches to support “comfortable viewing from as close as 14 feet.” The displays also feature an IP65 Ingress Protection rating to withstand harsh weather, in addition to delivering improved contrast and a higher refresh rate to elevate viewing experiences in temporary event applications and fixed installations.

The updated Planar Venue Pro Series, Planar Venue Pro VX Series and Planar Luminate Pro Series will begin shipping through Planar’s global network of authorized resellers in Q2.

Kayye's Krystal Ball 2024 Graphic (1)

Welcome to my 24th annual Kayye’s Krystal Ball!

It’s been an honor to have written this for 24 straight years and even more of an honor for it to have so many thousands of readers annually — it’s almost always our most-read article of the year on rAVe [PUBS]. So, if you’re reading this right now, know that I am humbled by your loyal readership, and I continue to be amazed by how many of you read it (as well as how many of you tell me you use it to guide decisions on up-and-coming new companies and tech). Thank you for the support, #AVtweeps. #LOVE 💜 .

As I’ve explained each year, writing this requires me to stop and research anything new, evaluate the potential impact it will have on our market and then articulate it in a way that matters to you, the readers. If you’re a regular reader of my content, you already know this, but for those who don’t: My Kayye’s Krystal Ball is an annual article in which I not only tell you what I think is going to happen in the AV, UCC and Digital Signage markets for the upcoming year, but I also look back and review the previous year’s predictions — sort of a scorecard of accuracy, if you will.

So, without further ado, I’ll start Kayye’s Krystal Ball: 2024 Edition by reviewing what I predicted would happen last year. Then, I’ll move on to my 2024 predictions.

For reference, you can read Kayye’s Krystal Ball 2023 here!

Author’s note: Kayye’s 2023 Krystal Ball Predictions will be delivered as an Exertis Almo exclusive webinar on Feb. 20 at 2 p.m. EST. You can register to attend that here.

Let’s Review My 2023 Predictions!

(With a heart for things I got right and a skull for things I got wrong.)

  • Projectors will see the best sales year since 2015: 💜
  • We will see a plethora of new all-in-one products: 💜
  • 2023 will be a record year of brand partnerships and collaborative agreements: 💜
  • The Huddly Crew and/or HDBaseT could set a new bar for meeting equity: 💜
  • Using the future of the car as a model, watch AVaaS explode in 2023: 💀
  • The digital signage media player model is how we will soon build AV systems: 💜
  • Hotel lobbies should become co-working spaces: 💀
  • 2023 will be GIANT for dvLED: 💜
  • The Digital Canvas is seeing a plethora of new product solutions: 💜
  • The Philips Tableaux will kick off a wave of wireless signage displays: 💜
  • The things I said you would (or should) be doing in 2023:
    • Selling furniture: 💜
    • Building experiences: 💜
    • Figuring out how to leverage XR technology: 💀
  • And, finally, the 12 companies (see list in 2023 article) I said you probably haven’t noticed but should be on your radar in 2023: 💜

Now that’s out of the way, let’s move on to this year.

What’s Going to Happen in 2024? My Predictions:

1. Xyte Will Become the AV Cloud and AVaaS Platform of Choice in 2024:

If you haven’t heard of Xyte, you’d better learn everything you can, and quickly. Simply put, this company is transformational. Xyte has quietly developed the best cloud management and AVaaS platform in the industry.

You may already be familiar with and using this company’s product without knowing it (as, truthfully, the only wholly scalable versions of CloudAV are its OEM partners). Unfortunately, to truly immerse myself into the Xyte platform, I had to sign an NDA that wouldn’t disclose its partners’ names (unless the company tells the market first). The reason? Some of Xyte’s partners want you to believe they built their own cloud-based management AVaaS platforms — but instead, they offer white-labeled Xyte. There is nothing wrong with this; companies want to appear to own the IP, even when they don’t.

That leads me to this thought: I wish every brand in AV, UCC and Digital Signage would stop with the “not-invented-here” syndrome nonsense. Just adopt Xyte. Let me set the scene to further my point: Imagine if every AV, UCC and Digital Signage product you installed — no matter the brand or model — worked together seamlessly and could be managed on one dashboard. Now, imagine that, besides proactive systems management, you could have every system you install available on an AVaaS model.

That’s Xyte — and that’s why it deserves top billing in my 2024 Kayye’s Krystal Ball.

I guarantee you there is not a single integrator salesperson on the planet who will disagree with me on this one. It will make AVaaS frictionless for them to sell and reliably support, thus raising the bar for everyone. Oh, and it’s super profitable, too. It will allow integrators to sell services rather than just products.

2. E Ink’s Color ePaper is Going to Transform Digital Signage, Right Before Our Very Eyes

In the retail space, full-color ePaper is driving more interest in signage and merchandising use cases. Color ePaper enables retailers to get all the benefits of low-power (or battery-operated) digital signage. For transportation, E Ink will expand outdoor signage networks, especially with its E Ink Kaleido 3 Outdoor display technology, which has a larger temperature range. Color is also a big interest for onboard transportation signage, such as advertisements and route information inside buses, as well as transit networks with multiple lines like the MBTA in Boston, which already has E Ink’s signage installed across parts of the Green Line. And, this is the technology being used by companies like Sharp and Philips Tableaux for their color ePaper products.

Additionally, E Ink Prism 3 is enabling manufacturers to push color E Ink beyond the boundaries of traditional signage and consumer products. In 2024, expect to see more manufacturers integrating color-changing materials into various products. If you don’t have a clue what I am talking about, check out the use cases like the BMW i Vision Dee concept car and the color-changing guitar from Cream Guitars. Now, imagine transforming a storefront, a company lobby or even a cafeteria in a school using this technology — AV integrators will drive adoption.

In 2024, look for the aforementioned E Ink adopters to deliver larger form factors than what is currently available (42” displays). Wireless and powerless displays are the future and 2024 will be a big breakout year for them!

Oh, and let’s not forget DynaScan — this company has an outdoor ePaper solution. You read that right — outdoor ePaper. It’s incredible and transformative and it can all be managed PoE.

3. 21:9 Will become the Aspect Ratio of Choice for All ProAV Installs; Not Just UCC

The developers of Signature Microsoft Teams Rooms likely had some inkling of the wave of 21:9 displays that we’d see in 2023, and for the Front Row feature, they had to have a way to show proof-of-concept at launch. However, I will bet they had no clue that it would, a year later, become the aspect ratio of choice for even non-UCC applications like classrooms! Even display chip companies, like Epson (3LCD) and TI (the company behind the DLP engine) are making native 21:9 products, and so are LCD and LED manufacturers.

This opens opportunities for classrooms and even live events to use the wider aspect ratio. This will be a very exciting evolution for well beyond the good ol’ 16:9 days.

4. MicroLED (and LED) Will Have Its Year

I know, I know, microLED isn’t new. Sony pioneered it with its CLED (Crystal LED) and has wow’d everyone who visits its booth ever since the 2018 launch. But, now, Samsung is debuting a transparent microLED, and this is a game changer. Certainly, we won’t see transparent microLED in most applications, but these major developments will drive the cost of ALL LED down. Also, as companies like Legrand launch a universal LED mounting system to simplify spec’ing and designing with LED, we will see so much more LED on the market. However, rest assured, I am not a believer that LED will replace projection. However, I see LED creating new opportunities to build more immersive installs in every kind of room — yes, even meeting rooms.

In fact, LED is more likely to replace LCD flat panels than most other applications. Wait, and you’ll see.

One example of this is the new Avocor X Series — launched at ISE 2024. The X Series is a new LED wall that’s designed for collaboration spaces. This means there is FINALLY a reason to use a collaboration-board-like product as a front-of-room display. Prior to the Avocor X Series, I would have virtually never recommended a collaboration board be used as the primary display in a meeting space. The exception is definitely a huddle space; go for it. But, in meeting rooms, collaboration boards should be augmented displays — carted in or attached to the side walls of a room — not the primary display.

Oh, and what about the free-press LED technology got during this weekend’s NBA All-Star Game as the entire game unfolded and was played on an LED floor:

And, the Olympics, this summer, will feature over 170 LED screens at various venues and during the opening and closing ceremonies in Paris, France. This will, no doubt, be LED’s year to shine (pun intended)…

5. The Hollywood-Like Meeting Experience Will Amp Up UCC and Make for Better Classrooms

Historically, we in the AV business have been pretty darn reactive. Sure, we’re at the pinnacle of technology and have some of the coolest tech in all of tech, but we are typically reacting to an idea rather than driving new ideas through technology. Well, Huddly changed all that with the launch of Huddly Crew last year — emulating a three-camera Hollywood TV shoot with AI automating meeting video, making things better for remote participants. Side note: I am still awaiting a solution to make the experience better for in-room participants. Meaning, if we are in the room, we still treat remote participants like stepkids. #Truth. I spoke with Logitech at length during ISE 2024 about the need to address this — they seemed intrigued by my idea (stay tuned)!

And now, Logitech, Cisco and Jabra have entered the AI market to make meetings better for remote participants with Logitech adding “smart switching” to its Sight camera, Jabra packing AI into it’s Panacast 50 System (watch this deep-dive demo!!) and Cisco’s Cinematic Meetings Experience via EQX. All these new AI features are amazing.

We can all see how these will transform meeting rooms for remote participants — anyone watching any of those video links above can clearly see that. But, what you might not have thought about is how they provide you the ultimate sell-up opportunity in classrooms! Now you can simply install three cameras into any classroom and set whatever UCC platform to auto-record the class (or use Panopto) and you get an auto-switching three-camera shoot of any class — something not only remote participants will appreciate but anyone who would ever have to miss or re-watch a class! This is a great upsell opportunity in ANY classroom!

6. IPMX Is Now a Ratified Standard in AV-over-IP But the Leaders Still Aren’t Using it

I told the AIMS Alliance (the group of SMPTE ST 2110 manufacturers behind making IPMX a standard) this four years ago — until either Extron or Crestron adopt IPMX, it will not be the primary way that AV-over-IP installs are done by AV integrators. I still think that in 2024. And, now AMX has even added new AV-over-IP through the SVSI (also using IPMX).

I think 2024 will be much of the same. Again, until you get either Crestron or Extron to adopt IPMX, it won’t be the primary way AV-over-IP installs are done.

7. Everyone Has a Video Bar Now — All of Them Will Survive 2024

clickShareBar

At ISE 2024, Barco launched the Barco ClickShare Bar. And, following Sennheiser’s entry into the collaboration video bar market — also Vaddio (with the Venture) last month — now everyone in UCC has a video bar. So, how do you decide which one to use? I love this. Each one has a differentiation. Barco’s video bar literally has a ClickShare Conference built into it. Sennheiser’s is the only one with Dante, so it’s designed to be part of a larger system and has the ability to send and receive signals facility-wide. Vaddio’s is part of its USB ecosystem — so if you’re using Vaddio USB cameras or its Bridge, you’ll likely use its video bar too. I could go on and on covering each manufacturer with a bar … but they aren’t all alike. Everyone will likely pick the company they are most closely aligned with. Thus, all of them will survive. However, I am not sure there is much room for more — I am talking to you, QSC!

8. The Logitech Ghost Will Kick Off an All-in-One Room Offering that Could Trigger AVaaS Options in UCC

Have you seen or heard of the Logitech Ghost? If not, it’s a 10’x10’ all-in-one room system collaboration between Logitech and Steelcase. Before reading on, go watch this deep-dive video look I recorded at ISE 2024:

So, as you can see it’s a complete room system, walls and all. Why is this significant? Well, we have a situation in which some of the biggest clients in the world want to buy AV gear OpEx rather than CapEx — meaning, they’d rather buy AV systems over time by paying a monthly usage fee (like you do when you lease computers/phones/etc.) rather than paying for it all up front. As an industry thus far, we haven’t been able to do this as that would require every company in a system to cooperate with an AVaaS model (something that Xyte, the company I mentioned in #1, is trying to help our industry do). But now, here comes Logitech and Steelcase with an all-in-one solution that packages all the AV —integrated with UC and furniture. Yes, walls and even a ceiling! This solution is one fixed price; or, a large company like Bank of America could buy dozens or even hundreds of them by paying a monthly fee, e.g. OpEx. This could force every major company in AV and UCC to stand-up and take notice (and cooperate with Xyte, for example) in their movement to help us go AVaaS. Look out!

Either way, I LOVE the Logitech Ghost!

9. Digital Signage Will Finally Become Part of AV — Kicking Off a Media Server Revolution

Thanks to companies like BrightSign and SpinetiX, digital signage will finally be integrated into AV. We’ve been playing around the fringe of it for years with the majority of it going to either the advertising or the IT markets. But, SpinetiX launched something really cool at ISE 2024: It’s a four-output signal player designed to simplify video walls. That player, in and of itself, is not the reason I make the statement above. In fact, I am not even sure that SpinetiX appreciates what it has: a mini-media server.

Who cares?

Well, media servers have dominated live events for years. All those pixel-mapping shows? Media servers do that. The amazing immersive content projected or placed on random LEDs behind the bands at live concerts? Media servers do that. And, what SpinetiX has launched — probably without even realizing it — is a small, inexpensive media server. And, one that could, for example, be installed in a classroom or a meeting room and plaster content across multiple displays — all from one giant digital canvas. Also, look at the new Dataton WATCHPAX 30 Media Server!

This will be an interesting trend to watch in 2024 and if you’re not already using SpinetiX (or Dataton), you should be.

10. More USB Cameras Will Find Their Way Into All Rooms — Not Just UCC Rooms, Way More

Ironically, the biggest inhibiting factor to installing more USB-based cameras into spaces is cost, not of the cameras but of the USB signals. Sending USB — especially USB 3) signals long distances is hard and expensive to do. But, the team behind HDBaseT (aka: Valens) has figured out a way to do it really intensively and powerfully; it could kick off a wave of USB everywhere.

Hype? Well, watch this and see if you agree:

So, believe me now? I think this changes everything. This allows us to stick a lot more USB-based cameras into classrooms, meeting rooms, boardrooms and even spaces around a client’s facility. So, if you are in the business of selling USB-based cameras or integrating USB-based cameras, 2024 will be a giant year for you!

Oh, remember that section above in which I talk about how the Hollywood-like meeting experience will transform classrooms? Herein lies the solution.

11. Experiential Design Could Explode in 2024

If you haven’t been to an Illuminarium, go! They are in Las Vegas, Toronto and Atlanta so far. No, I am not saying this is the future of everything, but I see this as inspiring the future of experiential spaces — what else are we going to do with all those giant buildings at malls (that used to house the anchor stores that are now closing down)? Kids love them and adults do too. They can be used for housing digital museum collections, gaming, corporate events and family outings. They’re applauded universally. And I know you all know about the Sphere in Vegas — it’s an experiential space. The Van Gogh Exhibit? Same. But in the case of the Sphere, it’s actually LED with a killer perspective of a 190-degree field-of-view, depending on where you are sitting.

But, these spaces don’t even have to be in big, open, expansive buildings. You can do this in a small room, too. Heck, Christie Digital had one in its booth at ISE last month. I explored it during this booth tour video I led.

The point is, there’s a new market emerging for experiential spaces. It’s a new type of client that doesn’t even know how to ask for what what it wants. So, look out!

12. InfoComm Will Be Gigantic! Record-Setting, in Fact

If you’ve not already registered to attend InfoComm, you should. (In fact, do it now with code “RAVE” for free entry onto the show floor.) In any case, the stars have aligned and AVIXA added a bigger Esports Pavilion, more live events exhibits, the largest educational program in a decade and more exhibitors than the show has had since 2019. There is no doubt that IC24 will be the biggest show ever. You won’t want to miss it if you are in AV, UCC or Digital Signage.

13. We’ve Barely Seen AI; Way, Way More Will Come in 2024

So far, our exposure to AI has been limited to bettering mic arrays and some creative camera integration as described above with the cinematic and Hollywood-like three-camera shoot UCC products from Cisco, Logitech and Huddly. Boy oh boy are you about to be blown away with some of the new AI stuff coming to the ProAV market. For example, imagine if systems could set themselves up. It’s coming. What if you could see a system failure weeks before a problem ever arises? It’s coming. And, what if you could control an entire room with your voice? It’s coming. AI will also start to replace some tech jobs in ProAV. That’s the part of AV we don’t like to talk about, but if you’re a system programmer, you might want to diversify your talents. Also, if you really want to see an interesting glimpse into the future of AI, head on over to digital signage content creation platform company Korbyt, and and check out how it has automated signage content creation using location and time-based AI. I am truly impressed.

14. With NDI, You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet

NDI is the AV-over-IP sleeper technology. Historically used for managing either broadcast video streams or H.264/H.265 streaming, it keeps getting amped up. NDI 6 is the bomb. Not only does it support HDR in AV-over-IP but it can also move 16 bits per color channel, streaming over well less than 1G of bandwidth! Companies to watch? Vizrt (sister company to NDI) and NDI itself!

15. AVaaS? Yes Please!

Although I don’t think AVaaS (AV-as-a-Service) will make the prime-time lineup for ProAV in 2024, I think it’s time to start creating toothier kitted solutions. The issue with AVaaS is that you can’t sell a system that way UNLESS every brand you sell agrees. In other words, if the display company you’re specifying says “no dice” to AVaaS, you’re stuck selling that CapEx while selling everything else as a service (aka: OpEx). But, you can pick your favorite five vendors and sell those as a kitted package, then dumb down some of the systems you sell and sell them OpEx (as a service). 2024 is THE YEAR to do this, you’ll see …

That’s all from me for 2024. Thanks for reading. You can always challenge me, ask for clarification or add your own predictions in the comments below. Finally, feel free to email me at gary@theraveagency.com. I welcome your feedback!

My 2024 E4 Keynote Includes 9 Cool New Products and 4 Cool New Technologies That Will Change AV Forever https://www.ravepubs.com/my-2024-e4-keynote-includes-9-cool-new-products-and-4-cool-new-technologies-that-will-change-av-forever/ E4 https://www.ravepubs.com/my-2024-e4-keynote-includes-9-cool-new-products-and-4-cool-new-technologies-that-will-change-av-forever/#respond Fri, 16 Feb 2024 15:49:16 +0000 https://www.ravepubs.com/?p=263305 E4

I love opening up the Exertis Almo E4 Experience with a keynote presentation — and, I always give attendees the opportunity to see and hear the products and tech I talk about following my speech when they walk on to the E4 show floor. And this year, more than any other in the past, I will be talking about products and tech that will immediately have an effect on your business in the year 2024.

Some of my keynotes have been forward-thinking and forward-looking to prepare you for changes coming two, three or even five years in the future. For example, when I did my keynote on the impact of 4K on ProAV, that was three years before we even had 4K displays. Also, when I delivered my session on how AV-over-IP will work in ProAV, that was a full two years before we had any AV-over-IP products.

But for 2024, it’s going to be different. In addition to talking about four tech trends we all need to watch in 2024, I’m going to dissect nine new products (that have already debuted) and tell you why they are significant and why you should be integrating them into virtually every system you design and build.

Who makes these product and why does I think they are game-changers? Well, arrive early and grab a front-row seat as for some of the products I’ll show you demos. And, I welcome you participating — that means agree OR disagree!

I feel like this could be the E4 Experiences’ first, ever, interactive keynote will leave you not only excited to hit the show floor and see each of the products in action but, the five tech trends will drive profitability and innovation in the AV, UCC and Digital Signage industries for the rest of 2024 and well in 2025!

So, if you are in the Washington, D.C. area (March 5) or Chicago (April 16), please go ahead and register now at https://e4experience.com/.

What a show! I am proud to say we sent reporters from rAVe [PUBS] to every single booth at ISE 2024 earlier this month to shoot videos of new (and returning!) products. We amassed a cache of more than 2,100 videos, and we posted them all on our (beautiful) ISE microsite, which also includes photos, podcasts and 400+ new product news stories.

Every year since we’ve been doing this, we’ve given out awards for the “Best of the Best.” The best of everything we saw — and here they are. There’s also a YouTube playlist featuring our winners at the very bottom of this story. (You can click play and scroll through which video you’d like to watch on the top right of the video window.)

If you’re an integrator and see something here that you aren’t selling yet, consider contacting these companies! Likewise, if you’re an end user reading this, consider adding these to your future rooms — these companies won for a reason!

January 2024 Temperature Check Results: ProAV Predictions https://www.ravepubs.com/january-2024-temperature-check-results-proav-predictions/ Jan 2024 Results https://www.ravepubs.com/january-2024-temperature-check-results-proav-predictions/#respond Thu, 15 Feb 2024 18:18:06 +0000 https://www.ravepubs.com/?p=263294 Jan 2024 Results

Welcome to the first results analysis of rAVe’s monthly Temperature Check of 2024! For the month of January, we wanted to get in the spirit of the new year by asking for your predictions for the AV market in 2024. Here’s what you guys had to say!

In your opinion, what segments of ProAV are expected to experience significant growth in 2024 (2)

Our first question centered around which segments of ProAV are expected to experience significant growth in 2024, and respondents agreed that the education and corporate AV sectors were likely to experience significant growth. (Note that respondents could choose multiple answers for this question.)

We interviewed  Ric Sepulveda of Shen Wilsom & Wilke about this, and why corporate AV might be climbing above the rest — closely followed by education. He also highlighted the potential of the healthcare sector as well.

“I’m seeing clinical/healthcare industry is at an inflection point with commercial signage, and this is spurred by efficiency and quality of life features for patients as they way-find to their clinician’s office,” he said. “From the initial entrance to patient intake, to ultimately the waiting room, signage and kiosks guide and streamline the patient experience at every step.”

Where do you see the ProAV industry heading in terms of innovation and market dynamics

Our next question asked respondents where they see the ProAV industry heading with respect to innovation and market dynamics. Notably, respondents placed more emphasis on the evolution of collaboration technologies despite the buzz around AI in AV systems in the past year.

“We’re starting to see AI reach a plateau, which is being met by an incredible amount of investment capital hoping to catalyze a continuation of the immense momentum we’ve seen over the past couple years. Vivitek Adds Novo DS110/DS310 Simple to Use Digital Signage Players to Lineup https://www.ravepubs.com/vivitek-adds-novo-ds110-ds310-simple-to-use-digital-signage-players-to-lineup/ vivitek DS110 DS310 https://www.ravepubs.com/vivitek-adds-novo-ds110-ds310-simple-to-use-digital-signage-players-to-lineup/#respond Wed, 07 Feb 2024 21:28:34 +0000 https://www.ravepubs.com/?p=262786 vivitek DS110 DS310

Vivitek just debuted the Novo DS110/DS310 digital signage player that can connect via HDMI to any display in portrait and landscape in 4K@60Hz and dual 4K@30Hz Video decoding. Designed to be easy to deploy — due to the integrated WiFi & Ethernet connection – the series offers interactive signage for a better engagement/two-way interaction with its GPIO (DS310 only) control. This provides access to a greater number of practical applications while facilitating the building of interactive signage applications.

The DS110 is aimed at small business and retailers as well as schools and colleges, corporate business environments and visitor attractions like museums and galleries. It offers more processing power to accommodate more advanced signage solutions (e.g. GPIO, HDMI In, more advanced playlist layouts, etc). Like the DS110, the DS310 is compatible with other solutions from Vivitek’s Novo Ecosystem – which comprises Add-On Devices, All-in-One Solutions, Launcher, Software / Cloud / App – in a stylish design that’s well-suited to professional environments. Both benefit from a sturdy metal case, which is the most effective material for heat dissipation, enabling the DS110/DS310 to operate for 24hrs without overheating, while carefully designed brackets make it easy to mount in a variety of locations.

Both of the DS models take advantage of NovoDS Studio Express. Pre-installed on both models, it further enhances the user experience and has been designed to provide instant access to signage content. NovoDS Studio Express enables users to intuitively update or create new digital signage on the spot, via a web browser. In addition to its ease-of-use, NovoDS Studio Express has been developed with security in mind, only enabling authorised users to update messaging with the latest information using mobile or desktop devices.

Here’s a video we shot of it at ISE 2024:

It is also easy to stream content via Dropbox, Google Drive, one Drive, FTP and Samba, while users can define a dedicated area or a full screen and control its diffusion by adding the content they want to appear on the screen; this can range from photos to PDFs, video and text. Boosting flexibility further, both the DS110/DS310 are compatible with USB Flash Drives and SD Cards. Meanwhile, the Open Software APIs (Application Programming Interface) accommodates custom applications that require machine-to-machine communication between IT systems, AV systems, and more.

Day to day use is further simplified by the Central Management function, which enables users to manage one or more DS110/DS310 devices from a single computer over network. This eases the synchronisation of playlists, monitoring playback, and so on. The devices also support a wide range of dynamic content from text to audio, photos and videos, webpages, Google Calendar, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, RSS, weather and IP streaming, etc.

Kansas City Chiefs Partner With Sony to Refresh Presentation Technology https://www.ravepubs.com/kansas-city-chiefs-partner-with-sony-to-refresh-presentation-technology/ sony chiefs https://www.ravepubs.com/kansas-city-chiefs-partner-with-sony-to-refresh-presentation-technology/#respond Mon, 05 Feb 2024 21:46:03 +0000 https://www.ravepubs.com/?p=262225 sony chiefs

Three-time Super Bowl champions, the Kansas City Chiefs, refreshed their venue’s presentation technology at the start of the 2023 season, purchasing more than 600 of Sony’s professional BRAVIA BZ35J and BZ40H displays and expanding their partnership with the company. With options ranging in size from 43-inches to 75-inches, Sony says the Chiefs are now able to take advantage of the power of Sony’s lineup of professional displays which combine flexibility, connectivity, ease of use and image quality in their premium spaces, including all suites and the Club Level concourse.

With an expedited timeline to execute, the Chiefs worked with Sony and AVI-SPL, a professional audiovisual solutions provider, integrator and installer, to complete this multi-faceted project. Together, the companies were able to secure a high volume of inventory, under budget, in time for the beginning of the season.

Aging technology made the Chiefs realize an upgrade was necessary. They chose to standardize on Sony’s professional BRAVIA displays due to their IP capabilities, the club’s familiarity with the Sony brand and its “reliable reputation.”

“We had some outdated screens, plus we’re trying to stay more flexible as we decide whether we’re going to keep our current SMATV distribution or move to an IPTV solution. It was important to have a product that was able to be upgraded to the IPTV,” Kansas City Chiefs MEP and Construction Project Director Pat Mitchell said.

According to the company, an added benefit of the new Sony display technology, compared to the Chiefs’ previous generation Sony models, is its smaller footprint, lighter weight and slimmer profile.

chiefs

“Having as up-to-date technology as possible enhances the game experience, which in a space where we’re hosting partners and clients, is a priority,” Matt Diemand of the Chiefs said.

Diemand also mentioned the importance of having technology that works without issue.

“From the fan side, especially the client partnership side, ease of use and reliability are paramount. When something is modern, easy to turn on by pressing a button or two and works seamlessly – that is great. We had our previous displays for so long because they just worked, and we expect these new Sony models will set us up well into the future,” he said.

From a partnership perspective, Diemand says he has enjoyed a great working relationship with Sony. He also appreciates Sony’s focus on product lifecycle sustainability which has become a more prominent focus across the sports landscape.

With several hundred displays already deployed, the Kansas City Chiefs are only in phase one of their refresh project, with plans to build out the partnership even further in the coming seasons.

Samsung’s VXT Platform Makes Creating and Managing Engaging Digital Signage Content a Piece of Cake https://www.ravepubs.com/samsungs-vxt-platform-makes-creating-and-managing-engaging-digital-signage-content-a-piece-of-cake/ ISE 2024 Story Images (29) https://www.ravepubs.com/samsungs-vxt-platform-makes-creating-and-managing-engaging-digital-signage-content-a-piece-of-cake/#respond Thu, 01 Feb 2024 15:11:09 +0000 https://www.ravepubs.com/?p=260709 THIS IS A PROMOTED POST

ISE 2024 Story Images (29)

Alex Lee, Executive Vice President of Visual Display (VD) Business at Samsung Electronics showcased the new all-in-one VXT platform

Digital Signage is one of the most important markets within AV technology. No one disputes that. You see everything from the signs outside your favorite drive-thru and your child’s classroom to the highest-security control rooms — all transforming to LEDs. That’s a lot of content.

Making this content look good while trying to manage multiple displays when you’re just one business? A nightmare. The best content on a digital signal network is usually not designed by someone who works in AV. And if someone does manage to create a successful design, it barely scratches the surface of all the other types of display content they also have to create and manage.

That’s why last month, Samsung Electronics announced the launch of its Visual eXperience Transformation (VXT) platform, a cloud-native Content Management Solution (CMS) combining content and remote signage management on one secure platform. It not only amps up the quality of the content on B2B displays, but it can also be used as a turnkey content management solution and drive it to the players. It’s a three-part offering:

  • VXT CMS: A content management platform that simultaneously handles content, playlists and schedules.
  • VXT Canvas: What You See is What You Get (WYSIWYG)-based creative tools in which users can create original content with custom and company fonts, as well as templates and images pre-loaded on the system.
  • VXT Players: VXT supports Tizen and Android-based players, while also managing multiple web elements simultaneously on one screen.

This means that a Samsung VXT user can design better signage content and can use the platform as a complete CMS to schedule, deploy and manage that content — no matter the network size, as it’s all done over the cloud. In fact, Samsung has even shown proof of concept through a 10,000-screen deployment at Hy-Vee stores, thanks to a partnership with RedMedia. And, any VXT Platform user has access to the same creative content production system that Hy-Vee has — even if you’re deploying to only one screen!

Finally, Samsung has integrated VXT with some of the coolest creative assets via something it has dubbed Pre-Integrated Repeatable Solutions (PIRS). This includes giving VXT users access to:

  • VXT Art: Users can access a library of artwork and photos, including content from various art museums and galleries, to be used across businesses.
  • Link My POS: A solution by Wisar Digital allows VXT Canvas to pull product data from Point Of Sale (POS) systems, automating content via inventory changes.
  • Ngine Real Estate: Developed with Ngine Networks, businesses can seamlessly display properties that are for sale or rent based on location.

PIRS or Pre-Integrated Repeatable Solutions offers content, solutions and expertise of third-party system integrators, software developers and content partners

And, Samsung even added energy management into the VXT platform — so now organizations can check on the energy consumption levels of displays and tailor usages accordingly.

The company officially introduced the VXT solution at its Global Launch Event during ISE 2024. There wasn’t an empty seat in the house as Alex Lee, Executive Vice President of Visual Display (VD) Business at Samsung Electronics shared the company’s vision for the new platform – marking what Samsung describes as a solution that is “revolutionizing the user experience” for businesses of all sizes and across industries.

PIRS Partners such as Wisar Digital gave testimonials to VXT’s features and capabilities.

Following the keynote speech, which included testimonials from Wisar Digital and KniTec, there was a hands-on demonstration of the platform’s features and capabilities.

“VXT represents the next era of cloud-native content management for digital signage, and I’m motivated by the idea that we’re not only solving some of the toughest problems for clients and customers but delivering a solution that can help businesses unlock their potential,” said Alex. “By democratizing the digital signage landscape with VXT, we’re emphasizing our unwavering commitment to our customers everywhere.”

Samsung has been in the digital signage market since its inception. If you just look around, you’ll see its displays all over the place — in retail, in schools and across the corporate campus. Samsung powers so much of the market, from hardware to software — all-in-one solutions are the company’s specialty. It only makes sense that it would want to step up the content quality and make the design and management process simple and easy to use for those who aren’t natural creatives.

Sure, there have been other attempts at improving the creative process and development generation of signage systems in the past. But, none of them have been driven by the display manufacturers themselves. And, this shows a next-level commitment by Samsung to amp up the quality of signage for everyone in every deployment. Kudos to Samsung!

Samsung debuted Transparent MICRO LED in the form of an actual commercial display using an extremely small MICRO LED chip, and it looks crazy good. The transparent MICRO LED can be customized to any size or ratio, offering another level of customization for customers.

This technology could revolutionize the retail and exhibition spaces (depending on the cost), with the display simultaneously showing important information while providing a view of actual products or creating a unique ambiance through its transparent surface. It presents new use cases and expands the limits of the screen experience once again.

Here’s a video I shot of it at ISE today:
