Anyone who knows me in person knows that I am incapable of passing up an opportunity to make a “Dune” reference. (Which is timely right now as “Dune: Part Two” is in theaters!) I’m also incapable of passing up an opportunity to make references to the movie “Airplane!” (1980), but that’s not important right now.

Back on track here, there’s a quote from the book that comes in handy a lot. You probably already know it:

“I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.”

What stops us quite often is fear: fear of failure, fear of the unknown, etc.

Fear of failure and fear of rejection are things that hold salespeople back from achieving more. I’ve seen it, and more importantly, experienced it for myself. I still remember the first hardware sale I made when I started selling electronics. It was a VCR and its list price was over a thousand dollars. Just typing that out makes me feel old. Anyway, I remember it not just because it was my first sale, but more importantly, I remember both my apprehension pitching it to the customer, as well as my relief, shock even, at the customer saying yes, she’d take it.

Over time I’d say that even while salespeople learn to put aside their fear of rejection, it never goes away completely. Rather, the parameters under which you feel that fear change. Often just the price tag that makes you pause increases.

Years ago, I had a meeting with one of my biggest clients where they shared a metric that was frustrating them. Almost all of their retail salespeople, both in their retail operation and their B2B teams, were incapable of getting add-on attachment sales of any accessory that cost more than $50. It was enormously frustrating for them; none of their efforts to fix that worked to move the needle. But they were coming at it from the wrong angle. Their salespeople were afraid. They were afraid of scaring off their customer. They were afraid that if they presented too many products, or products that cost too much, the customer would say “NO,” to not just the attachment sale, but to the whole transaction.

And I get it. We’ve all been there.

The solution is to break your sales team out of that mindset where they’re gatekeeping the customer’s budget but learning how to sell from the top down. First of all: it’s not your job to decide how much money the customer will spend. That’s their job.

Secondly, there’s psychology at work here: no one is ever offended by being shown the absolute best, most expensive things that you have to offer.

No one is ever offended by being shown something amazing. If they love it and can afford it, they’ll take it. If they can’t afford it they’ll ask you to show them something else. You may or may not end up selling the best, most expensive thing you’ve got every time, but if you don’t show it off first you won’t ever sell any, ever.

I was able to help my dealer with that issue by doing store visits that focused on sales training, addressing sticker shock specifically, and coaching salespeople to get out of their own way on this, and start selling from the top. And it works. Over several months their sales metrics climbed, and their team were no longer hung up on worrying that something was too expensive for their customers to buy.

New Life Austin Gives its In-ear Monitors New Life with KLANG https://www.ravepubs.com/new-life-austin-gives-its-in-ear-monitors-new-life-with-klang/ KLANG NLA 1 https://www.ravepubs.com/new-life-austin-gives-its-in-ear-monitors-new-life-with-klang/#respond Mon, 18 Mar 2024 21:04:59 +0000 https://www.ravepubs.com/?p=264306 KLANG NLA 1
AUSTIN, Texas – March 2024 – Back in 2017, New Life United Pentecostal Church of Austin—aka “New Life Austin”—became one of the first houses of worship in the country to implement a pair of KLANG:fabrik immersive in-ear monitor mixing processors. The tech-forward church wanted to improve the performance experience for the eight to ten musicians and vocalists on its stage every Sunday, giving each worship team member full control over their personal monitor mix while also improving its sonic quality. The result the church said at the time was “nothing short of amazing!”

That’s only become more so now that New Life Austin has upgraded by installing a new KLANG:konductor, replacing the :fabriks. The installation, part of a package purchased through Heart Of Texas Music Inc., also included a new DiGiCo Quantum225 console at front of house. The KLANG-DiGiCo combination has taken the church’s audio to a new level once again, and just in time, as New Life Austin’s music production has continued to grow—just the number of vocalists onstage now would have outnumbered the entire worship team seven years ago.

“We have nine or ten vocalists during services now, along with bass, drums, a couple of guitars, keys, percussion, sax, and so on,” says TJ Feronti, New Life Austin’s Tech Director and FOH engineer. His channel count now exceeds 70, which was straining the capacity of the previous pair of 56-input KLANG:fabrik systems.

“The :fabrik is a great IEM processor, but we were having to send groups from one into the other to accommodate everything we needed,” he explains. “And we had been maxed out on the DiGiCo SD9 console we had been using for front of house and to route the monitors. Now, we have up to 128 channels and 16 separate mixes available, going over MADI through the Quantum225. It’s all so much easier to manage.”

Feronti says the church’s musicians and singers have taken to the KLANG’s immersive mode, with most of them choosing to use it. “They’ve been very impressed, whether they’re new to the professional aspect of this or have been doing it since they were using wedge floor monitors or just stereo IEMs. They love being able to move things around spatially in their mixes on their iPads and have them reflect what they’re experiencing onstage.”

And Feronti says the :konductor has made his job easier, able to listen in and keep an ear on any of the stage mixes from his own iPad. “Plus, it’s so easy to use,” he adds. “Whenever we have other worship teams visiting, our house team can help them adjust to it very quickly. It’s just made everything a whole lot easier here.”

V-Series Powers Milky Chance’s Return to South Africa https://www.ravepubs.com/v-series-powers-milky-chances-return-to-south-africa/ milky chance capetown https://www.ravepubs.com/v-series-powers-milky-chances-return-to-south-africa/#respond Mon, 18 Mar 2024 20:56:42 +0000 https://www.ravepubs.com/?p=264332 milky chance capetown

Cape Town, South Africa, March 2024 – ULTRA Events recently supported the much-anticipated return of the pop-folk band Milky Chance to the stage in South Africa. The creative technical supplier provided a complete package including a full d&b audiotechnik sound system. The performance at Green Point A-Track Stadium, Cape Town, and part of a three-leg tour of South Africa, was produced in collaboration with Break Out Events and Rogue Entertainment.

The performance, part of the album tour for Living in a Haze, was supported by Neon Dreams and Sean Koch in Cape Town and was a long-awaited reunion of the band and their South African fan base. The duo shared, “It’s been way too long since we were over in South Africa. Back then it was so special for so many reasons and we felt welcomed by the people.”

Having recently expanded their d&b stock with the purchase of a set of AL90s, ULTRA Events was confident that a V-Series system would provide excellent audio quality and coverage for the 5,500 guests that attended.

Powered by D80 amplifiers, the sound system was based around d&b’s V-Series line array loudspeakers. This included 20 V8s and four V12s, stacked in a left-right configuration on either side of the stage plus a centre subcluster of 18 B22 subwoofers supplemented by two J-INFRA subs for extended low-end. Two AL90s were deployed as front fills and on-stage monitoring was handled by six M4 monitors.

Control over the audio output was of utmost importance for this project, owing to the location of the stadium within the built-up CBD business district, very close to a hotel and hospital. “The A-Track is a great venue for an outdoor concert, but we have to be extremely cognizant of the area in the CBD, and as such, the actual system-on time is very limited,” explains Patrick Dudgeon, Audio HOD at ULTRA Events. “With d&b’s ArrayCalc simulation software I can model the system coverage and frequency response to a very accurate degree. When I am happy with the model, I can punch that data into NoizCalc, and submit a very accurate noise prediction to the city council. As long as a certain level is maintained at FOH, the noise spillage is minimised so that we can continue to host events at this fantastic venue.”

The FOH engineer for Milky Chance, Mario Simic, highlighted the ease of tuning the consistency he gets with a d&b system, commenting, “It’s d&b, so if it doesn’t sound good, the problem isn’t the system. I love travelling around the world and knowing what the systems I’m walking into will sound like.”

Elkhart, IN – Iconic American audio brand Klipsch Marine recently announced their partnership with legendary wake surfer Ashley Kidd. The MasterCraft Pro Team athlete has dominated the sport with seven World Championships. Klipsch Marine is privileged to provide an immersive sound experience for her training days on the water.

“Music is literally playing all day long in my life. At my house, in the gym, my truck, and always on my boat,” says Kidd. “I am super excited about the opportunity to partner with Klipsch, who have made sure that Bailey and I always have crystal clear sounds to rock out to.”

For 2024, Kidd collaborated with MasterCraft Boat Company, the world’s most awarded towboat, to launch the Ashley Kidd Edition XT23, featuring a stunning ‘Golden Hour’ metal flake finish. This statement-making vessel is well-appointed with the standard Klipsch Marine audio system in well-recognized brand colors, copper and black. The exclusive black SeaDeck features a step pad with Kidd’s signature, but perhaps the most personal touch is the custom-designed dog bowl drawer she included for her Siberian Husky, Bailey.
Kidd, who was admittedly terrified of the water, did not start wake surfing until the age of fifteen. She overcame that fear, debuted in her first competition the following year, and has been conquering waves with an unmatched craft ever since. Her distinctive style and impressive accolades have secured her place in wake surfing history and launched her straight into a successful social media career. Fans are astounded by her eye-catching tricks and Bailey has become a celebrity boat dog herself.

“I have two teenage daughters that are passionate wake surfers and have always admired Ashley and her incredible talent,” says Klipsch Marine publicist, Kasandra Barrow. “She is inspiring a new generation of female athletes to carve their own paths on the water, and we are honored to be a part of her journey and welcome her to the Klipsch family.”

TASCAM Portacapture X8 Helps Diana Macalova Craft the Ideal Sounds for Film and TV https://www.ravepubs.com/tascam-portacapture-x8-helps-diana-macalova-craft-the-ideal-sounds-for-film-and-tv/ DMacalova2 Hi https://www.ravepubs.com/tascam-portacapture-x8-helps-diana-macalova-craft-the-ideal-sounds-for-film-and-tv/#respond Mon, 18 Mar 2024 20:50:29 +0000 https://www.ravepubs.com/?p=264303 DMacalova2 Hi

Vienna, Austria – March 2024… Diana Macalova is a sound designer, composer, and dialogue editor whose work ranges from epic full orchestral scores, emotional piano pieces and hybrid compositions featuring various electronic elements to short, impactful titles, commercials, and brand identities. She is an integral part of the team at the Viennese film audio postproduction studio Blautöne Studios, where she specializes in sound design, dialogue editing, and music composition for a variety of film projects—with the Portacapture X8 Multi-track Handheld Recorder from TASCAM being central to many of her endeavors.

“I find immense joy in sculpting the auditory experience of a film, ensuring that every sound element contributes to the overall narrative and emotional impact,” Macalova states. “One of the highlights of this year was my involvement as a dialogue editor and sound designer to several TV and cinema productions, which will be released in 2024. I’m excited about the future of film sound, and I’m eager to embrace new challenges while contributing to the art of storytelling through evocative soundscapes. The TASCAM Portacapture X8 has become a key element in my work.”

Macalova has become very fond of the Portacapture X8 because of its flexibility. “The TASCAM Portacapture X8 is a versatile tool that has significantly impacted my work in various domains. I use it in a variety of applications. One aspect I particularly enjoy is recording natural environments. The Portacapture X8 allows me to capture the intricate details of different settings, from bustling cityscapes to serene natural landscapes. I also find the Portacapture X8 to be an invaluable tool for documenting my musical ideas.”

“I’ve had my Portacapture X8 since August,” Macalova added. “Since then, I’ve been gradually assembling my own sound library. What’s fantastic about it is its portability. It fits easily into my backpack, allowing me to be spontaneous and capture unique sounds from the acoustic environment wherever I happen to be. This flexibility enables me to respond to my surroundings on the fly, resulting in the recording of exceptional and distinctive sounds from various locations.”

When questioned about the Portacapture X8’s key features that she finds most appealing, Macalova offered the following thoughts. “The Portacapture X8’s intuitive interface is a standout feature for me,” she said. “Navigating its controls is seamless, enabling me to focus more on the creative process rather than wrestling with complex settings. The ability to record in 32-bit is a standout feature thanks to the incredibly wide dynamic range. This not only ensures pristine audio quality, but also makes it practically impossible to clip or distort recordings. It provides the headroom needed for capturing subtle nuances.”

“The inclusion of a color touch display is also a game-changer,” Macalova notes. “It provides a clear and visual representation of my settings, making it easy to monitor and adjust parameters on the fly. The remote-control feature through the app adds yet another layer of convenience. Being able to control the Portacapture X8 remotely enhances my flexibility during recording sessions, so that I can fine-tune settings without being tethered to the device.”

The TASCAM Portacapture X8 has multiple presets for optimizing settings for various recording applications as well as the ability to create one’s own custom settings. Macalova uses both, as she explained, “The presets—particularly through the Launcher system—are truly ingenious. I frequently leverage them for a quick start, especially when I’m diving into field recording. The touch screen makes it easy to select optimized settings tailored to these specific applications. However, what I find most intriguing is the ability to create my own custom presets for instant recall from the Launcher. This customization enables me to fine-tune settings based on the unique requirements of each location.”

“While the presets are fantastic and serve as a convenient starting point,” she continued, “I must admit that my preference lies in the manual mode. Acoustic conditions tend to vary, and working in manual mode provides me with the ultimate flexibility to adapt and refine settings on the fly. It’s this combination of presets for efficiency and the manual mode for adaptability that makes the Portacapture X8 such a valuable tool.”

Before turning her attention back to the business of the day, Macalova offered these parting thoughts regarding her experience with the TASCAM Portacapture X8, “The Portacapture X8 has seamlessly integrated into my creative process. The versatility of this tool—from its intuitive presets to the flexibility of manual mode—has exceeded my expectations. I am grateful for the convenience the Portacapture X8 brings to my on-the-go recordings, enabling me to capture inspiration from diverse environments. Each project presents a unique set of challenges, and the Portacapture X8 has consistently risen to the occasion. It has evolved from being a valuable asset to becoming an important tool.”

Fall Out Boy Falls For DiGiCo’s Quantum Consoles https://www.ravepubs.com/fall-out-boy-falls-for-digicos-quantum-consoles/ fall out boy digico https://www.ravepubs.com/fall-out-boy-falls-for-digicos-quantum-consoles/#respond Mon, 18 Mar 2024 20:17:09 +0000 https://www.ravepubs.com/?p=264606 fall out boy digico

“I don’t know that there’s another desk that we could really do it all with,” says Chad Olech, front-of-house mix engineer for musical group Fall Out Boy, talking about managing the band’s complex comms infrastructure that sees three separate talkback lines coming into his DiGiCo Quantum5 console, as well as mixing a great show for fans. “I don’t think there’s another manufacturer that makes something that would do what we need it to do in this situation. I’m sure we could work our way around it, but it wouldn’t be as seamless and as easy.”

Rob Smuder is one of those comms sources, as he mixes the band’s monitors from a DiGiCo Quantum7 console, along with the stage manager and backline crew lines. “The main reason that I use the Q7 out here, honestly, is the matrixes,” says Smuder, who has worked with the band since 2018. “We have a ton of talkback mics that are routed all over the place; each backline person has two talkbacks, one to talk to the crew and one to talk to their band member; and all the radios go through the console. Meanwhile, the front-of-house has three talkbacks to go to various places. There’s a pretty robust network of us talking to each other during the show. It can get pretty chatty! But the Quantum7 matrix helps me route all of that stuff so much more reliably and effectively, and that lets me focus on the stage mixes.”

DiGiCo Fall Out Boy 2

Fall Out Boy were the perennial punk-pop favorites of MTV and the Teen Choice Awards in the aughts, and after a hiatus from late 2009 to 2013 came roaring back, driven by their tight package of two guitars, bass, and drums, and the unique sense of humor of co-founder Pete Wentz, whose song titles like “My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark (Light Em Up)” and “Hold Me Like A Grudge” leavened their performance intensity. Their debut album, Take This to Your Grave (2003), became an underground success and helped the band gain a dedicated fanbase through heavy touring, later becoming an oft-cited influence on pop-punk music in the 2000s.

And it’s that music that’s the true focus of what Olech and Smuder mix every night during Fall Out Boy’s current So Much For (2our) Dust tour, a 23-date US run spanning February 28 through April 6, riding on the recent heels of the tour’s European and Asian legs.

Olech had used a DiGiCo SD5 desk for Fall Out Boy’s live sound since 2014, when he spent three days going over six different console options at the Lititz, Pennsylvania headquarters of Clair Global, which supplies the band’s Cohesion PA system. When the current tour was being planned last year, he chose to bump up to the updated Quantum5, along with a pair of SD-Racks with 32-bit mic pre’s that would connect across an Optocore network loop with the Quantum7 console at monitors. “The sound, the workflow—everything just worked perfectly for me on the Q5 for what I needed,” he says.

DiGiCo Fall Out Boy

Those needs include the ability to interface with the two 18-space racks of analog outboard gear that he relies on to help reproduce Fall Out Boy’s punchy sound onstage. Those include a Sonic Farm Creamliner and API preamps and a Rupert Neve Designs 5045 Primary Source Enhancer. Fortunately, the move from the SD5 to the Quantum5 was seamless. “Basically, I just transferred my file over and took maybe three minutes to pop it all together,” he recalls. “It was such an easy transition.” He adds that he’s been experimenting with adding on some of the console’s Spice Rack processing options, such as Mustard for channel-strip processing.

But then there’s the management of that sprawling comms network. “It’s gotten a little out of control over the years,” laughs Olech, who’s been with Fall Out Boy for 11 years. “It’s one of those things where you add this and then you add that, so now you got to add this, and so on. And I think that now we’re up to over 16 talkback channels, plus I have three talkbacks to the stage on my console. For a four-piece band! I don’t know that we could do it with any other desk than a DiGiCo.”

MultiDyne Enters the Uncompressed IP Gateway ST 2110 Market for Broadcast https://www.ravepubs.com/multidyne-enters-the-uncompressed-ip-gateway-st-2110-market-for-broadcast/ multidyne uncompressed opengear solutions https://www.ravepubs.com/multidyne-enters-the-uncompressed-ip-gateway-st-2110-market-for-broadcast/#respond Mon, 18 Mar 2024 19:47:14 +0000 https://www.ravepubs.com/?p=264599 multidyne uncompressed opengear solutions

MultiDyne Video & Fiber Optic Systems launched a new series of openGear solutions bridge between the SDI and IP worlds. The new MDoG Series offers SMPTE ST 2110 network interface and low-latency JPEG-XS codec modules to manage uncompressed and compressed signals as they move between legacy systems and IP networks.

MultiDyne’s MDoG-6060 modules represent the company’s first IP Gateway solutions for uncompressed ST 2110 networks. The modules provide a reliable SDI-to-IP network interface with exceptionally wide bandwidth, helping broadcast and media companies optimize throughput for uncompressed 4K and HD video transport.

MDoG-6060 ST 2110 Gateways are available in multiple I/O configurations for 3G-SDI (3×3, 6×2 and 2×6) and 12G-SDI (1×1, 2×0 and 0x2) systems. Each configuration offers two 25GB network interfaces to support redundant transport streams, strengthened through SMPTE ST 2022-7 compliance. The ST 2022-7 standard provides hitless merge functionality, which means that the two network streams will borrow packets from each other to maintain signal integrity as they move through the network, ensuring streams are reassembled and intact upon reaching their destinations.

MultiDyne MDoG 6060 Rear

MultiDyne’s new MDoG-6061 JPEG-XS codec openGear modules address the need for high-density signal transport in modern workflows where uncompressed transport isn’t yet a reality. The MDoG-6061 JPEG-XS encoders and devices support low-latency compression or decompression of up to two channels of 12G-DSI, with the added benefit of ST 2022-7 redundancy over dual 10GB network interfaces.

As with all MultiDyne openGear modules, MDoG Series modules can easy be programmed and added to existing openGear frames with other cards to meet each customer’s specification, and are SNMP-compatible for IP-based network management and monitoring purposes.

CEDIA Extends CEO Daryl Friedman’s Contract Through 2027 https://www.ravepubs.com/cedia-extends-ceo-daryl-friedmans-contract-through-2027/ cedia daryl friedman https://www.ravepubs.com/cedia-extends-ceo-daryl-friedmans-contract-through-2027/#respond Mon, 18 Mar 2024 15:25:29 +0000 https://www.ravepubs.com/?p=264597 cedia daryl friedman

CEDIA has announced the extension of Daryl Friedman’s contract as its Global President and CEO. Friedman’s initial term, set to expire late this year, has been extended through the end of 2027, underscoring his and the Board’s dedication to CEDIA’s stability and continuity.

“Daryl’s contract renewal as CEDIA’s Global President and CEO is a testament to his outstanding leadership,” said Alex Capecelatro, Chairperson of the CEDIA Board of Directors. “I am personally thrilled to continue working as Chair alongside Daryl, and I look forward to our ongoing collaboration in advancing CEDIA’s mission and serving our members.”

“I’m honored to continue serving as CEDIA’s Global President and CEO and am committed to building upon the progress we’ve made across CEDIA’s three pillars of Advocacy, Connection, and Education,” said Friedman. “Together, with our committed Board of Directors, professional staff, dedicated volunteers and dynamic members, I am confident we can continue serving and shaping the future of the professional smart home technology industry.”

Friedman first began his role as CEDIA’s Global President and CEO on Nov. 29, 2021. Before plotting a vision for the association, Friedman set out on a global “listening tour” to understand both internal and external challenges and member needs. His people-first mentality has since shaped various initiatives association wide, ultimately steering CEDIA in the direction of stability and growth.

Foremost, his strategic financial decisions helped guide CEDIA out of the pandemic, achieving profitability for the association again for the first time in nearly five years. CEDIA has also experienced record-breaking new membership acquisition rates, with CEDIA members now represented in over 80 countries. Member engagement has also been particularly noteworthy across programs including the CEDIA Smart Home Awards, the RP22 Immersive Audio Design Recommended Practice, and CEDIA NextGen Smart Home Career Toolkit.

In Friedman’s pursuit to bring forward CEDIA’s “best kept secret,” advocacy efforts have expanded significantly. The association organized its first in-person lobby day at the Michigan State Capitol, filed comments on behalf of integrators to the FCC, and launched the inaugural CEDIA Smart Home Day on Capitol Hill. Simultaneously, Friedman has continued to emphasize CEDIA’s position to adjacent trades, nurturing relationships with builders, designers, and architects.

Friedman’s fresh ideas have also enhanced member experiences at key events like CEDIA Expo and ISE, which have become pivotal platforms for galvanizing the smart home community. At CEDIA Expo, he introduced the annual CEDIA Town Hall to delve deeper into pressing industry topics like advocacy and workforce development, the AI symposium as an industry-wide collaborative partnership, and the CEDIA Executive Club for industry CEOs to elevate the sector. At ISE, he conceived the Smart Home Technology Stage, broadcasted the CEDIA Annual Meeting enabling all members globally to participate, and initiated focus groups with designers to gather valuable industry insights.

Following Friedman’s travels to meet members around the world, CEDIA launched a new ambassador program, empowering members to serve as advocates for the industry in their local communities. Digitally, CEDIA is implementing an upgraded SEO strategy to ensure more end users are encouraged to use CEDIA integrators. These efforts will help amplify CEDIA’s message and reach a broader audience, driving greater awareness and engagement.

“Daryl’s unwavering passion for the industry shines through in his proven track record and forward-thinking plans,” said Amanda Wildman, Vice Chairperson of the CEDIA Board of Directors. “He is keen to listen to members and share fresh ideas — all while fortifying CEDIA’s existing initiatives. I am filled with optimism for the promising journey ahead as we embark on the next phase of CEDIA under his guidance.”

Studio Technologies Introduces Model 5682 ST 2110 to Dante Bridge at NAB 2024 https://www.ravepubs.com/studio-technologies-introduces-model-5682-st-2110-to-dante-bridge-at-nab-2024/ resize Studio Technologies Model 5682 https://www.ravepubs.com/studio-technologies-introduces-model-5682-st-2110-to-dante-bridge-at-nab-2024/#respond Thu, 14 Mar 2024 09:16:26 +0000 https://www.ravepubs.com/?p=264525

LAS VEGAS, MARCH 13, 2024 – Studio Technologies, manufacturer of high-quality audio, video, and fiber-optic solutions, presents its new Model 5682 ST 2110 to Dante Bridge at NAB 2024 (Booth C2346). The Model 5682 provides a high-performance means of interconnecting (“bridging”) SMPTE ST 2110 audio channels with Dante® audio-over-Ethernet channels.

The Model 5682 is available in two versions: the Model 5682-01 allows up to 32 audio channels to pass in each direction, while the Model 5682-02 supports up to 64 audio channels. The unit is compatible with the SMPTE ST 2110-30 standard for PCM audio signals and the ST 2110-10 standard for signal timing. On the Dante side, the Model 5682 is compatible with the Dante Domain Manager (DDM) software application and is compliant with the AES67 interoperability standard.

The Model 5682’s primary application is to interconnect audio channels associated with two independent networks, one that supports ST 2110 and the other Dante. The source and destination of these audio channels would typically be other equipment such as mixing consoles, broadcast or production crosspoint switchers, matrix intercom systems, or digital audio processing units. The Model 5682 can also perform effectively on the same local area network (LAN), interconnecting independent ST 2110 and Dante audio channels. Each implementation, ST 2110 or Dante, can have its own timing (sync) reference, sample rate, and bit depth. Sample rate conversion (SRC) logic within the Model 5682 ensures that the audio signals can pass between the two implementations with minimal degradation in performance. The Model 5682’s ST 2110 and Dante network interfaces are electrically isolated and share no non-audio data, minimizing the risk of security issues. Only uncompressed PCM digital audio signals pass, by way of the SRC logic, between the two network interfaces.

“The suite of ST 2110 standards is finding wide-ranging use in broadcast applications,” says Gordon Kapes, President of Studio Technologies. “While also handling video and control signals, the Model 5682 is focused on ST 2110-compliant audio channels and their associated timing parameters. Dante audio-over-Ethernet has found acceptance in broadcast, audio/visual, and general audio applications due to its ease of use, excellent performance, strong interoperability, and wide adoption by many equipment manufacturers. As the number of facilities that utilize both ST 2110 and Dante-compliant equipment increases so does the need to interconnect them. However, interconnecting or bridging ST 2110 audio channels with Dante audio channels can present a challenge. Using the Model 5682 makes this a simple task, only requiring interconnecting standard Ethernet signals and performing a moderate amount of configuration.”

The Model 5682’s ST 2110 and Dante interfaces each incorporate three Gigabit Ethernet (GigE) connections. Two GigE ports on each interface are designated for use by the associated ST 2110 or Dante network while the third is reserved for configuration use. The ST 2110 will support redundant streams, following the SMPTE 2022-7 standard. A setting performed within the Dante Controller application selects whether the Model 5682’s Dante interface will operate in a Switched or Redundant mode.

Front-panel LED indicators, an LCD display, and five pushbutton switches are provided to view and revise selected operating parameters. NMOS, ANEMAN, and JSON configuration support for the unit’s ST 2110 interface is provided. The Dante Controller software application, available free of charge from Audinate, is used to configure the unit’s Dante network and audio parameters.

The Model 5682 can be powered by 100-240 V, 50/60 Hz or a source of 12 volts DC. Both can be simultaneously connected to provide redundant power operation. The unit’s lightweight enclosure mounts in one space (1U) of a standard 19-inch equipment rack. Industry-standard connectors are used for the Ethernet, AC mains, and DC power interconnections. The unit is built to professional standards and is intended for continuous, 24-hour operation.

To be introduced at NAB Show 2024, RevenueStream adds powerful subscription management, monetization and branding features

BAYSIDE, CALIFORNIA, March 12, 2024 – Pioneering streaming and podcast solutions provider StreamGuys returns to NAB Show 2024 with a modernized version of RevenueStream, among the first solutions of its kind to help broadcasters and live events companies tap into the potential of audience subscription revenue. StreamGuys will demonstrate the new version of the groundbreaking service on the ENCO booth (W1743), where StreamGuys will have a branded presence and dedicated station.

RevenueStream was brought to market in 2008 to help radio and television broadcasters look outside the traditional advertising model for revenue generation. It also struck a chord with content creators, musical performers and sports teams that wanted a professional, secure and controlled service to help them monetize their live streams and on-demand media. RevenueStream proved to be a successful access control service that offered secure, password-protected subscription offerings, helping early internet radio services defray bandwidth costs through audience-supported revenue. Over the years, RevenueStream has helped users of all sizes increase revenue and grow their aggregate audiences.

StreamGuys has now unleashed its second-generation RevenueStream platform with powerful new subscription management, branding and payment features, along with more flexible monetization options for all customers. The latter includes metered paywalls, freemium access, membership plans, and donation support, making RevenueStream an attractive option for live worship and private corporate events to private podcasters, public media, and commercial broadcasters. It also supports everything from one-time events to recurring subscriptions that support ongoing revenue models.

RevenueStream’s new features will also prove highly attractive to the sports and live events market, especially for larger sports leagues and concert streaming services that wants the benefits of a powerful subscriber management platform and customizable integration opportunities. StreamGuys has natively integrated SGplayer media player with RevenueStream to support these new features, although third-party players can also be integrated behind the paywall.

The new subscriber management platform, powered by Pigeon.io, will help users manage their subscriber lists, membership plans and account renewals, while new customizable integration options will help organizations easily visualize their branding elements within SGplayer. Customers also have the option of adding StreamGuys’ SGcontrol tokenization service to fully lockdown and secure content from being stolen as streams occur. Additionally, RevenueStream has expanded its transactional options, providing consumers with more payment choices while ensuring secure transactions that protect subscriber data.

“RevenueStream was built to help broadcasters and content creators discover new ways to generate revenue while also igniting new creative avenues for their live productions,” said Eduardo Martinez, Vice President of Technology, StreamGuys. “We are already seeing strong interest from both commercial and public broadcasters, the latter of which can now offer donors alternate content during their pledge drives. We are excited to bring customers in all verticals a modernized service to market that helps them offer more adaptable subscription models, drive audience loyalty and retention, and maintain a steady revenue flow. Furthermore, integration with our other tokenization and playout ensure our customers can enjoy a proven and reliable streaming ecosystem along with our exceptional customer support.”

NAB Show 2024 takes place April 14-17 at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

Namibia, March 2024 – Etosha National Park is a must-visit destination for travelers seeking the warmth of Southern Africa. The wildlife sanctuary in Namibia sprawls across a landscape of golden sunsets, sheltering endangered species and the renowned Etosha Pan – Africa’s largest salt pan that attracts over 250,000 nature enthusiasts and adventurers every year.

If you’re looking to get the most out of your trip to Etosha National Park, you’re in for an unforgettable stay at Mokuti Etosha Lodge, with options ranging from authentic campsites for safari lovers to exclusive villas and luxury five-star lodges. The lodge is just a few minutes away from the eastern entrance, the Von Lindequist Gate, and offers guests incredible wildlife encounters within a tropical oasis, making it one of Namibia’s most popular downtime destinations.

The luxurious Mokuti Etosha lodge, owned by the O&L Group, has recently undergone an extensive audio-visual transformation, expertly designed and installed by Stage Audio Works (SAW) Namibia. As a long-standing client of SAW Namibia, the O&L Group entrusted them to completely re-imagine Mokuti Etosha’s conference space while also enhancing the surrounding pool and bar areas with an easy-to-use audio and lighting control solution. The outcome is truly remarkable and has elevated the overall experience for guests and visitors.

“O&L Leisure is a loyal client of ours and we wanted to assist them in offering their guests the highest level of audio and visual services,” advises Johadrie de Villiers, General Manager at Stage Audio Works Namibia. “Whether there is great sound quality when guests are shopping for souvenirs in the gift shop, lounging next to the pool, dining in the restaurant, attending an event or when they need to conduct a video conference call whilst on holiday, Mokuti Etosha now has the technical infrastructure to offer its guests all of this and more.”

SAW Namibia devised a conferencing solution leveraging cutting-edge technology from Crestron, Sennheiser, Xilica, and Audac, crafting a distinctive experience tailored to the lodge’s needs, while enabling seamless connectivity even in remote locales. The existing conference center at Mokuti Etosha was demolished to make way for the new solution, which comprises a stand-alone experience center providing wired and wireless presentation capabilities, bring your own meeting (BYOM) video conferencing and basic room control that utilizes a touch panel to control lights and the display power.

The conference experience centre features Crestron’s wall-mount touch screen and a Poly Studio video conferencing solution. A Samsung QB 75-inch Class HDR 4K UHD professional display smart LED screen is used to display content.

Additionally, a brand-new, multi-purpose divisible conference room with multiple camera angles also required BYOM video conferencing and local Bluetooth audio playback, all controlled from a wall-mounted touch panel in the two conference rooms. SAW Namibia automated room configuration changes in divisible environments using Crestron Cresnet partition sensors linked to a control processor. This streamlined operations, enhanced efficiency, and optimized space utilization without manual intervention. The system also provided energy efficiency benefits by adjusting environmental settings based on occupancy, showcasing the power of automation in improving functionality and user experience.

One of the biggest changes to the conferencing space was the addition of camera tracking. SAW Namibia installed three 1Beyond AutoTracker 3 Presenter high-quality intelligent PTZ automatically tracking cameras together with three 1Beyond PTZ cameras and four Sennheiser Team Connect Ceiling 2 microphones, which are controlled via a wall-mounted touchscreen. “We selected Sennheiser and Crestron for this project due to our longstanding partnership and unwavering confidence in their audio and video solutions respectively, particularly for conferencing” de Villiers enthuses. “The inclusion of Crestron’s 1Beyond camera tracking technology significantly enhances the lodge’s event offerings, particularly with its automatic video tracking capabilities.”

“The conferencing venue is quite spacious and it was a concern that the attendees seated furthest could have difficulty seeing the speaker at the end of the hall,” she continues. “When streaming or recording of a conference was needed, Mokuti Etosha didn’t want to hire in an additional camera crew. What we have supplied ensures that all event attendees can both see and hear the speaker clearly from anywhere in the room. It also improves the inclusivity for remote participants.”

Together with the overhaul of the lodge’s conference offering, SAW Namibia designed and installed new sound and lighting control systems for the pool bar and restaurant at Mokuti Etosha, as well as a distributed background music system across the extended retail and pre-assembly areas. The pool bar benefits from multiple Audac six-inch ALTI surface mount loudspeakers and Crestron’s SAROS eight-inch in-ceiling loudspeakers, which are powered by an Audac CAP424 amplifier. The sound is easily controlled by a Xilica Lucia 2 wall controller that fits discreetly into the lodge’s stunning aesthetics. Additionally, the Xilica Solaro QR1 DSP (Digital Signal Processor) was incorporated into the system to provide advanced audio processing and optimization capabilities, ensuring top-notch sound quality and flexibility in managing the audio environment.

For the restaurant, SAW Namibia supplied a Crestron DALI interface, managed by the VC4 Crestron Virtual control system with a Crestron Cameo keypad for centralized lighting control. The retail and pre-assembly areas both feature two Audac CIRA eight-inch ceiling loudspeakers each, alongside a Xilica Lucia 2 for control. “Aside from the conferencing technology, Mokuti Etosha wanted a reliable, high-quality system for background music, which is what we supplied using reliable technology from Audac, Crestron and Xilica,” explains de Villiers.

“The lodge is one of the most magical places to stay close to the Etosha National Park and the solutions we provided ensure that guests can get the utmost from their trip whether they’re staying for business or pleasure. The project was not without its challenges, but we persevered and the client is thrilled with the end result.”

Sven Thieme, Managing Director of O&L Leisure and Executive Chairman of the O&L Group expressed immense satisfaction with the services provided by Stage Audio Works Namibia. He remarks: “The refurbishment has truly elevated the entire authentic Mokuti Etosha, Africa reimagined experience. We aimed not only to cater to holidaymakers and sun-seekers but also at enhancing the experience for conference attendees, wedding parties and any other special events hosted at Mokuti Etosha. The essence of Africa reimagined extends far beyond leisure; it’s an experience fit for royalty, transcending the boundaries of traditional holiday destinations.”

BenQ Education Doubles Down on Sustainability With SmartEco 2.0 Projector Technology https://www.ravepubs.com/benq-education-doubles-down-on-sustainability-with-smarteco-2-0-projector-technology/ https://www.ravepubs.com/benq-education-doubles-down-on-sustainability-with-smarteco-2-0-projector-technology/#respond Thu, 14 Mar 2024 07:24:06 +0000 https://www.ravepubs.com/?p=264516

SmartEco 2.0, Currently Available in the BenQ LH650 Projector, Saves Schools Energy Costs While Intelligently Optimizing Picture Quality

COSTA MESA, Calif. — March 12, 2024 — BenQ, an internationally renowned provider of visual display and collaboration solutions, is helping schools cut classroom projector energy costs with its new SmartEco 2.0 technology. BenQ’s new SmartEco projectors use laser and LED technology with special chips that evaluate the colors needed for each frame and adjust the power according to the content rather than only reducing the overall brightness like the traditional eco mode on a legacy LCD classroom projector. This means that without impacting the quality or the brightness of the picture, the projector can use up to one-third less power.

“For most school classrooms, projectors are one of the top consumers of electricity in the classroom. This is a key component in school district operating costs — which typically are the second largest expenditure for midsize and larger districts,” said Bob Wudeck, senior director of business development at BenQ Education. “BenQ SmartEco 2.0 was engineered to optimize brightness in response to the content for a drastic reduction in energy use without deteriorating the quality that can impact learning.”

The Power of LED and Laser Reducing Power Costs
BenQ SmartEco 2.0 technology brings together LED and laser chips to produce colored light that can be independently adjusted compared to a regular mercury lamp that only produces white light. In a BenQ SmartEco LED projector, there are individual red, blue, and green LEDs that the DLP chip mixes together to produce an image. By adjusting the amount of each color used for each frame, this solid-state lighting platform eliminates extra hardware costs and uses less power while ensuring a high-quality image. As an example, an all-white image on a BenQ SmartEco 2.0 projector will use full power while a forest scene with lots of green will use less power without changing the image on the screen. In comparison with other 4,000-lumen classroom projectors, the BenQ LH650 using SmartEco 2.0 technology can generate similar brightness and save a school up to 50% electricity compared to a legacy LCD projector using a mercury lamp.

Less Is More
In addition to less power consumption, the BenQ LH650 SmartEco projector features an eco-friendly design. It is made of 50% recycled plastic and it features a form factor that is half the size, resulting in less plastic, less fuel used in shipping, and less packaging and waste, including one-third less e-waste in comparison to a traditional lamp projector.

Additional Costs Savings
The cost savings for BenQ’s SmartEco 2.0 projectors stack on top of the additional cost savings built into its family of projectors. First, there is no monthly or annual filter cleaning. Every BenQ SmartEco projector is designed with an advanced sealed engine that eliminates the need for cleaning or changing messy filters that are required to avoid projector overheating. The sealed image keeps out dust that can cause a shortened life span. Second, they prevent yellowing and don’t require convergence adjustments. Every BenQ SmartEco projector uses the same technology used in commercial cinema projectors and is warranted against yellowing. In addition, the single-chip design eliminates the need to adjust the three different panels when they get misaligned. Finally, there are no expensive replacement lamps. By eliminating mercury lamps, a BenQ SmartEco projector can last as long as 30,000 hours — 24,000 hours longer than an LCD lamp projector that must be completely replaced at 6,000 hours of use.

Like an AV Bridge Over Troubled Water, These Cybersecurity Guidelines Will Ease Your Mind https://www.ravepubs.com/like-an-av-bridge-over-troubled-water-these-cybersecurity-guidelines-will-ease-your-mind/ cybersecurity tips tricks https://www.ravepubs.com/like-an-av-bridge-over-troubled-water-these-cybersecurity-guidelines-will-ease-your-mind/#respond Wed, 13 Mar 2024 23:05:53 +0000 https://www.ravepubs.com/?p=264514 cybersecurity tips tricks

Back in 2021, I wrote a rAVe column entitled “SecuringAV: The Remote Desktop Attack on a Florida Water Treatment Plant.” In this article, I talked about the different forms of infrastructure being targeted by cyberattacks, and connected the attack on the water treatment plant to similar vulnerabilities in AV systems. I also shared some lessons learned from the attack with our readers, about the human element.

Since then, a number of water treatment facilities have been victims of cyberattacks, many of them sharing the same devices, with the same vulnerabilities, making it rather easy for the attackers.

“Following a recent cyberattack at a Pennsylvania water utility, federal officials have confirmed that multiple additional water utilities in the US running the same industrial equipment have been breached by hackers […] at ‘less than 10’ water facilities in different parts of the US […]. In each case, the equipment targeted was the same […] likely by breaking into internet-connected devices with default passwords.”

Wait a second, changing the devices’ default passwords … I think I read about that somewhere on rAVe [PUBS] …

Jan. 26, 2016, Leonard Suskin, “That AMX Backdoor”

“How many installed processors are out in the wild with the admin passwords still set to the factory default?”

Nov. 4, 2016, Scott Tiner, “Security Wake-Up Call”

“Are all the default passwords changed?”

Dec. 2, 2016, Hope Roth, “Practicing Safe Automation”

“Don’t use default passwords.”

Fast forward five years later. In 2021, Scott Tiner, again, in “Lessons From the SolarWinds Hack,” said, “I sure hope that integrators/programmers and installers have always followed rules about passwords, like changing the default, not using the same one across different customers, safely storing them in a password safe, etc.”

Then, just a few months ago, in December of 2023, I discussed the need for using unique passwords in “Highlights From Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s Cybersecurity Advisory.”

Avoid Reusing Passwords

Earlier this month, Megan A. Dutta warned readers about easily compromised passwords in her article, “Exposing the Most Vulnerable Passwords of 2024.”

Scott Tiner talked about passwords again this year, in his article, “Security Versus Convenience.” Scott also noted how Chinese hackers are targeting U.S. Infrastructure, which brings us back to our discussion about the water treatment facility attacks. This is happening so much, the United States government has recently issued a document, “Top Cyber Actions For Securing Water Systems,” with basic steps I believe that can be easily applied to most AV systems and AV integration firms.

Try it. Just swap “water” or “OT” for “AV.” For example, Step 3 is “Change Default Passwords Immediately.”

“Require unique, strong, and complex passwords for all water [AV] systems, including connected infrastructure. Weak default or insecure passwords are easy to discover and exploit, and they may allow cyber threat actors to make changes to a water [AV] systems’ operational processes. This can negatively impact public health and safety. Change default or insecure passwords and implement multifactor authentication (MFA) where possible. Focus on deploying MFA to IT infrastructure, such as email, to make it difficult for threat actors to access OT [AV] systems. Consider asking manufacturers to eliminate default passwords.”

Here are the other steps listed in the Top Actions for Securing Water [AV] Systems document:

  • Reduce Exposure to the Public-Facing Internet
  • Conduct Regular Cybersecurity Assessments
  • Conduct an Inventory of OT/IT [AV/IT] Assets
  • Develop and Exercise Cybersecurity Incident Response and Recovery Plans
  • Backup OT/IT [AV] Systems
  • Reduce Exposure to Vulnerabilities [by patching]
  • Conduct Cybersecurity Awareness Training

Chances are, you are already providing some form of employee training that could easily include cybersecurity awareness modules. You can also work security into your end-user training, teaching them how to have more secure meetings, and how your technology helps to protect their privacy.

There are plenty of free resources in the PDF guidelines and online at CISA.gov and here on rAVe!

Now, please, for crying out loud, go change those default passwords! Do NOT make us ask you again!

Studio Technologies Debuts Model 5682 ST 2110 to Dante Bridge https://www.ravepubs.com/studio-technologies-model-5682-st-2110/ studio technologies model 5682 https://www.ravepubs.com/studio-technologies-model-5682-st-2110/#respond Wed, 13 Mar 2024 20:09:07 +0000 https://www.ravepubs.com/?p=264511 studio technologies model 5682

Studio Technologies debuted the Model 5682 ST 2110 to Dante Bridge for SMPTE ST 2110 audio channels with Dante audio-over-Ethernet channels. On the Dante side, the Model 5682 is compatible with the Dante Domain Manager (DDM) software application and is complaint with the AES67 interoperability standard.

Nescafé Used Nearly 200,000 Lumens to Launch the Dolce Gusto NEO Coffee Machine https://www.ravepubs.com/nescafe-used-nearly-200000-lumens-to-launch-the-dolce-gusto-neo-coffee-machine/ nescafe christie projectors https://www.ravepubs.com/nescafe-used-nearly-200000-lumens-to-launch-the-dolce-gusto-neo-coffee-machine/#respond Wed, 13 Mar 2024 19:26:58 +0000 https://www.ravepubs.com/?p=264501 nescafe christie projectors

Nescafé presented its new Dolce Gusto NEO coffee machine in Portugal, which was complimented by a spectacular 182,000 lumen immersive projection display. ADLC Audiovisuais selected nine Christie projectors to flood the auditorium of the Fundação Champalimaud in Lisbon with light and color for the official presentation.

At the launch event, produced by the UPPartner Agency for Nescafé, approximately 300 guests had the opportunity to participate in an unforgettable experience that integrated artificial intelligence, human avatars, video projection, tasting areas, and exclusive personalized animations.

The event placed a special emphasis on the brand’s strong commitment to sustainability, as both the machines and the capsules are made from recycled materials. In addition, all materials used by Nescafé in the presentation were able to be recycled after the event.

An impressive 22.5 meter (74 foot) wide by 8.20 meter (27 foot) long wraparound screen lit by five Christie M 4K25 RGB pure laser projectors engaged the audience. Two additional Christie 3DLP projectors illuminated the stage floor to complete the immersive experience.

Various images related to the brand were projected, while a group of dancers from the company Ritmos Urbanos performed choreographies that interacted with the projection.

In addition, two Christie D13WU2-HS laser projectors, with 1DLP technology, WUXGA resolution, and 13,500 lumens, projected on two large screens shaped like glasses that were located on the wall of the auditorium.

“These projections, with such an original format, caused a unique impact amongst the audience,” recalls José Cordeiro, director of ADLC Audiovisuais. “The client wanted to achieve a captivating effect on the audience, and boy, did we succeed,” he adds.

Cordeiro highlights the M 4K25 RGB projectors: “These 3DLP models have 4K UHD resolution, 25,000 lumens of brightness and pure laser RGB technology, producing brilliant images and spectacular colors. And all this with a super quiet operation and a lightweight and compact package. Christie has outdone itself with this machine.”

He adds: “All the projectors, which were different technologies, brightness and resolutions, performed excellently. The image was always impeccable. The equipment shone for its stability, robustness, and power throughout the event, without the slightest setback. And, most importantly, the client was delighted”.

Jose Cordeiro also highlights the role of projections in creating captivating experiences: “The presentation for Nescafé has been further proof of the impact that projections have to enrich corporate events with audiovisuals. They have a power and possibilities that other display technologies do not reach,” he concludes.

Visitors to ISE 2024 were greeted by the sight of a custom-made 7.5m umbrella where 61,500,000 pixels of animations enlivened every panel using six 10-bit, 4K, 20,000-Lumen projectors which were driven by a Green Hippo Hippotizer Boreal+ MK2 Media Servers.

The project was realised by UK-based Motion Mapping, who were challenged with creating the concept and delivering the unusual exhibit, which was rigged on the Epson stand.

“We managed to load up the two Hippotizer Boreal+ MK2 Media Servers with the new Hippotizer 4.9 software and used the SHAPE toolkit to 3D map the undulating surfaces of the umbrella’s many panels,” says Stuart Harris of Motion Mapping. “We constructed a 3D model in C4D and then the real thing was constructed in Germany. SHAPE helped us to calculate everything and visualise it all in pre-production and then blend and line it all up on-site. We worked closely with Epson’s stand designer to achieve the projector positions, above their stand. I find Hippotizer to be adaptable and SHAPE is our go-to for many projects.”

The team worked with the eight panels of the umbrella and the canvas as a whole, with graphics focusing on images of a spinning world which zoomed in on individual countries, and a range of other content. The bright colors on each panel showcased vivid colors and high-intensity graphics. Green Hippo’s Technical Product Manager Nick Spencer and Hippotizer Product Architect Zep Mouris were on site to offer support if required. “The support we get from them is second to none,” adds Harris.

Hippotizer 4.9 brings 10-bit color as well as native NotchLC playback support. With a 10-bit render engine, Hippotizer can now deliver projects from start to finish that can meet the demands of emerging display technologies, such as the latest projectors used on Epson’s ISE stand. Every aspect of 4.9 is now designed to work in 8-bit and 10-bit+ color depth to suit the user’s needs, from complex 3D Shape workflows to even a standard 2D workflow.

ISE 2024 — held at Fira de Barcelona Gran Via — was the most successful edition in its 20-year history with more than 73,000 attendees on the opening day. “Standing out from the crowd was vital and this is what our initial brief focused on – to create something challenging that would attract attention,” says Harris. “Seeing people stop at the stand to take in all in, and then take photos on their phones before talking to the on-stand team was fantastic.”

All the ISE 2024 coverage is at www.ravepubs.com/ise and includes over 2100 videos from the show floor!

Gamers8 Esports Tourney is Now World’s Largest and Filled with AV Tech, a Report from Riyadh https://www.ravepubs.com/gamers8-esports-tourney-is-now-worlds-largest-and-filled-with-av-tech-a-report-from-riyadh/ gamers8 esports tourney riyadh https://www.ravepubs.com/gamers8-esports-tourney-is-now-worlds-largest-and-filled-with-av-tech-a-report-from-riyadh/#respond Wed, 13 Mar 2024 15:09:58 +0000 https://www.ravepubs.com/?p=264489 gamers8 esports tourney riyadh

Despite only launching in 2022, Gamers8 has become the largest globally recognised Esports tournament. Taking place in Riyadh over eight weeks, this year’s ‘Land of Heroes’ event kicked off on July 6, bringing together gaming enthusiasts from all corners of the world, who competed to take home huge cash prizes and the coveted Gamers8 trophy.

The production behind Gamers8 is monumental, as alongside the intense gaming tournaments it also plays host to live concerts, attractions, and entertainment shows. A line-up of world-renowned artists and DJs, including Afrojack, Macklemore, Iggy Azalea, Imagine Dragons and more performed across its eight stages this year, in a show-stopping production.

Visual design and technology studio bright! studios were responsible for the media playback and virtual production of the gaming tournament elements of the event. bright! worked alongside other production companies and a pool of freelance technicians to take care of on-site virtual production, as well as augmented reality, lighting design and show control. “Gamers8 is an incredibly big project,” begins Leon Herche, creative producer at bright! studios. “Stage Precision’s SP platform was imperative to the work we were doing, as it was able to handle and control many different hardware and software platforms. We had around 30 Unreal Engine machines, 28 tracked cameras and 36 disguise servers that were all controlled using SP.”

Stage Precision’s SP software is a data and control platform for tracking workflows, virtual production and advanced media systems. Gamers8 was made up of several high-profile battles, including; Dota 2, Fortnite, Rocket League, Rainbow Six Siege and PUBG Mobile which all returned to the festival for 2023, while CS:GO, StarCraft: Remastered, Starcraft II, Tekken 7, Street Fighter 6, PUBG, R1 and FIFA were played for the first time. SP was essential to bringing these tournaments to life.

“We used 14 different SP PCs across the whole event,” says Herche. “Every stage has two studios, one in Arabic and one in English and the platform took care of show control, including all the AR elements, as well as controlling and manipulating tracking data, lens calibration and alignment across the event, too. It also allowed us to get data from the games and APIs (Application Programming Interface) and send it to Shield and Media servers at the same time.”

Shield is a virtual production optimized plug-in for Unreal Engine 5. It easily manages camera tracking inputs, splits scenes into fore- and background render passes, applies lens distortion and renders object passes for matte applications. In addition, it takes care of data in- and outputs for scene control and device integration. It was an extremely useful workflow tool for 2023’s Gamers8 spectacle, which needed precise control over its virtual elements, especially when compositing AR graphics in real-time.

“We handled three different APIs per game,” furthers Herche. “One would show the winning team, and we’d then use disguise media servers to display their name or photo. Shield displayed 3D scans of the players, and another API gave us statistics from a database, which we displayed using Unreal Engine as well. This is how we were able to create a completely immersive experience for the audience.”

Stage Precision’s SP platform also handled the extravagant opening ceremonies that took place to mark the start of the weekly tournaments. bright! used Unreal Engine with Shield plugin and SP to play AR and video content at the same time, while creating a timeline and rendering multiple systems at once.

“The reason we chose SP for this year’s event is because we were so impressed by it at the inaugural event,” concludes Herche. “We were able to calibrate the lens before the whole build was even finished, which massively reduced the set-up time. Additionally, using SP gave us unlimited flexibility. For the whole show control, there are of course other solutions available, but Stage Precision’s SP platform allowed us to trigger different systems and have queue lists and dashboards. This was essential in helping us deliver another incredible show.”

This year’s Gamers8 tournament offered the largest-ever prize pool in the history of Esports at $45m. The event reached 429,000 peak viewers and, collectively, over 2.5m hours of the tournament were watched on the first day. Despite its short legacy, Gamers8 has become the most recognised Esports tournament in the world, and with a workflow led by bright!’s design and SP’s state-of-the-art technology, it was once again able to deliver a ground-breaking production.

The Forum Invests in Another 30 Years of Live Music With EM Acoustics https://www.ravepubs.com/the-forum-invests-in-another-30-years-of-live-music-with-em-acoustics/ https://www.ravepubs.com/the-forum-invests-in-another-30-years-of-live-music-with-em-acoustics/#respond Wed, 13 Mar 2024 11:08:25 +0000 https://www.ravepubs.com/?p=264477

Tunbridge Wells, UK, March 2024 – In operation since 1993, The Forum is an award-winning independent music venue situated in the heart of Royal Tunbridge Wells, Kent. Hosting an eclectic mix of genres, from rock and punk bands to singer-songwriters, hip-hop acts and everything in between, The Forum is a landmark venue for live music lovers from across Southeast. To mark 30 years of keeping the music well and truly alive, the venue recently upgraded its existing sound system, working closely with sound designer Dan Roncoroni and British loudspeaker manufacturer EM Acoustics.

“I became involved with The Forum around 18 months ago, through a project at the nearby Assembly Hall Theatre,” says Roncoroni. “Impressed with the results, the Assembly Hall recommended my services to The Forum, which eventually led to the system PA upgrade project.”

On hearing the existing system, which was largely as old as the venue itself, Roncoroni suggested an upgrade to the PA system. “We set up a demo of the EM Acoustics system at their factory to showcase the entire product line-up to The Forum team,” recalls Roncoroni. “They were impressed by the power and slim form factor of the boxes and decided to invest in a couple of EMS-81X’s as small front fills for the existing PA system before committing to a full EM system.”

In preparation for their 30th anniversary, the team were still looking to modernize their overall sound system and a full PA from EM Acoustics was the natural next step. EM Acoustics allowed the venue to borrow a demo system for a month, further solidifying The Forum’s plans to upgrade with a full solution from the British brand.

“I’ve had a long relationship with EM Acoustics,” continues Roncoroni. “Over the years, they’ve proven to be a reliable and high-performance option, but more recently EM has risen to the top of the list for me in terms of quality, value and customer support. Furthermore, their ethos aligns perfectly with The Forum’s values of minimal waste and efficiency, so I had no hesitation in recommending a Reference Series solution.”

R10 loudspeakers, with their slim form factor, play a crucial role in navigating the challenges presented by the venue’s unique space, which was once a public facilities building before being renovated. “The R10s are rigged horizontally against the ceiling, one unit per side, and provide generous headroom for the heavier rock and metal acts that play at The Forum,” says Roncoroni. “These are supplemented by EMS61s, which match the tonality of the R10s perfectly, plus EMS-81s as delays and an S-218 subwoofer, which is installed beneath the stage.”

“Opting for an EM system was an easy choice,” says James Wilson, Production Manager at The Forum. “The Reference Series combined with the S-218 sub is an incredibly powerful combination within a small footprint. The ease of rigging, lightweight design of the boxes and interchangeable waveguides made installation and tuning easy, something that we managed entirely in-house.”

Live music fans across the UK understand the importance of supporting small venues, like The Forum. Roncoroni and the in-house team praise EM Acoustics for their collaboration in helping this small venue deliver big performances. “The new system represents a huge step forward for The Forum in ensuring we can cater to the highest level of artists and events for a long time to come,” reflects Wilson. “The value and customer service from EM is second to none, and they have supported us every step of the way from initial consultation to installation.”

Mediaproxy Works With Sky Deutschland to Provide New Recording Installation https://www.ravepubs.com/mediaproxy-works-with-sky-deutschland-to-provide-new-recording-installation/ Sky Buli Talk 6w https://www.ravepubs.com/mediaproxy-works-with-sky-deutschland-to-provide-new-recording-installation/#respond Wed, 13 Mar 2024 11:05:47 +0000 https://www.ravepubs.com/?p=264476

Melbourne, Australia – 13 March 2024: Mediaproxy, the global standard for software-based IP compliance solutions, has supplied its LogServer logging platform to Sky Deutschland to replace a previous recording set-up for their Sports Channels. The installation was part of the broadcaster’s general overhaul of the technology infrastructure at its broadcast center in Unterföhring near Munich.

Sky Deutschland broadcasts 22 Sports channels in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and Liechtenstein, including a sports news service and dedicated coverage of the German and Austrian Bundesliga, plus European and international events. In all this it has a legal responsibility to record its output for compliance purposes.

Because the system being used for this had reached the end of its operational life and was no longer supported, the broadcaster began looking not only for a replacement but also something that would improve on what had been used before. After seeing what was available on the market, Sky Deutschland selected LogServer because it offers the improved functionality and new features that were needed, as well as fitting in with Sky’s IP-based architecture strategy.

As a new user of Mediaproxy’s technology, Sky Deutschland worked with the platform provider to ensure that it would be possible to use its existing mezzanine distribution streams for the inputs into LogServer. Part of this involved developing a plug-in that allowed Sky to utilize its As-Run logs for registering the recordings made in LogServer. This was done to make it easier for those using the system to find, log and extract recordings of the events they are looking for.

“The ability to configure our company-wide Single Sign-on also helped us in getting users registered and on to the system securely,” comments Gerd Riedel, head of origination and on-air graphics development at Sky Sport Deutschland. “Overall, we’ve found LogServer to be extremely user-friendly with an easy-to-use interface and the ability to search for and view ancillary data such as closed captions and SCTE messages. As well as this, the license model allows us to have an unlimited number of users with “Active Directory” for sign-in. On a technical level, the system has good encoding quality at low bit rates.”

Mediaproxy’s chief executive Erik Otto adds, “We are delighted to have Sky Deutschland as a new client for LogServer. They had very specific requirements for recording and logging and we were happy to work with them to ensure that all their technical and compliance needs were catered for.”

Award-Winning “Walk-in Sound Body” Project https://www.ravepubs.com/award-winning-walk-in-sound-body-project/ walk in sound body https://www.ravepubs.com/award-winning-walk-in-sound-body-project/#respond Tue, 12 Mar 2024 22:10:22 +0000 https://www.ravepubs.com/?p=264470 walk in sound body

It’s the Opus AVant-garde award for the Ensemble Modern for its “walk-in sound body” at the cresc — Biennale for contemporary music in Frankfurt, Germany.

Now in its second year, Opus Avantgarde is given for works that go beyond the classic stage performance and depict current technological trends (or future staging trends). The jury and the trustees of the award include representatives from the German Media and Event Technology Association (VPLT), the European Association of Event Centres (EVVC) and other experts from the sector, as well as representatives of the trade press and Messe Frankfurt.

Under the title “MeWe” and for the sixth edition of the cresc, Ensemble Modern decided to explore the relationship between the individual and the community in a variety of modern music. Rather than limit themselves to the traditional audio concert, Ensemble Modern sought to expand on the audio by adding a post-performance technology-based physical experience.

Immediately after the live performance of “Earth Dances” (by Sir Harrison Birtwistle and staged jointly by the HR Symphony Orchestra and Ensemble Modern), Ensemble Modern invited the audience to join a novel live experience via a walk-in sound body. Forty-four loudspeaker components, supported by eight subwoofers on different levels, were arranged on the floor, at a height of 5 metres and in a ring below the studio ceiling. Led by Ensemble Modern’s sound designer and sculptor Norbert Ommer, the orchestra’s musical tones were transferred into a 3D audio installation in which the audience could move freely within the orchestra’s sound body. The playback transmitted into the room was linear and mixed live in three dimensions by Ommer via a d&b Soundscape system.

NorbertOmmer (1)

Sound sculptor, Norbert Ommer

For additional effect, the entire orchestra was rotated up to 180 degrees — as well as the additional movement of vocal instruments within the sound body. Audio specialist Crystal Sound collaborated in the technical implementation.

A musical exploration made possible by a technologically innovative concept, this post-performance extended the concert’s conventional aural impact to a new phygital (a blend of digital with the physical dimension) experience of contemporary music. The award ceremony will take place on 21 March at a gala event at Prolight + Sound.

Ensemble Modern is one of the world’s best-known ensembles — and based in Frankfurt am Main. Run as a democracy, eighteen soloists (from Belgium, Bulgaria, Germany, Greece, India, Japan, Switzerland and the USA) currently decide jointly on artistic projects, partnerships with other artists and all financial matters.

Ensemble Modern is funded by the German Federal Cultural Foundation, the City of Frankfurt, and (via the German Ensemble Academy) the Hessen State Ministry for Higher Education, Research, Science and the Arts. Every year, Ensemble Modern rehearses and performs approximately 70 new compositions, including about 20 world premieres, The cresc festival in Frankfurt area is organized by Ensemble Modern in collaboration with the HR Symphony Orchestra. The 2024 theme will be STRING FIGURES. Among humanity’s oldest games, the imaginative patterns created by strings and hands once served to depict constellations in the sky and firmament. String figures have acted throughout the ages as communication aids between peoples, myths, works of art and cosmological performances.

This year’s cresc features Ensemble Modern and guest performers dedicating themselves to this topic by weaving new artistic links and textures.

Here’s How Resolution Studios Built an Entire XR Virtual Stage Using Planar LEDs https://www.ravepubs.com/resolution-studios-planar-led-displays/ resolution productions group led video wall https://www.ravepubs.com/resolution-studios-planar-led-displays/#respond Tue, 12 Mar 2024 20:59:01 +0000 https://www.ravepubs.com/?p=264463 resolution productions group led video wall

Resolution Productions Group owns and operates Resolution Studios in Chicago’s Near West Side, an 86,000-square-foot production complex featuring four premier stages and other amenities. Approximately 70 percent of the studio’s business centers on TV commercial work with the rest dedicated to feature films and episodic projects. Resolution Studios’ approach to virtual production (VP) is to create customized LED video wall backdrops according to the unique requirements of each project. To support this flexibility, the studio utilizes 400 Planar Venue Pro VX Series indoor LED video wall displays with a 1.9mm pixel pitch (VPI-VX 1.9).

Todd Freese, senior vice president and chief technology officer with Resolution Productions Group, has a time-tested philosophy for operating a successful VP studio: LED volume layouts should be designed on a shoot-to-shoot basis.
“We are very adamant that a VP studio should not have permanently installed LED,” Freese said. “I don’t ever want to have the conversation of trying to convince a director to shoehorn their creative into a permanent installation that may not be right.”

Designed for the unique demands of temporary LED video wall setups, the Planar Venue Pro VX Series features magnetically attachable cabinets and a quick-lock system for securing cabinets together more efficiently. “Since we frequently reconfigure the physical design of the LED video walls, we pay close attention to the product details—such as the way tiles interlock or how the video wall is ground-supported,” Freese said. “In our testing of other products, we found that many had good image quality, but the mechanics of setting up were just too cumbersome.”

When fully assembled, the studio’s complete supply of Planar Venue Pro VX Series LED displays forms a curved, 80-foot-wide by 14-foot-high LED video wall. However, it’s not uncommon for the LED video wall to be set up at 60 feet wide and 20 feet tall or broken up into multiple formations. “It’s constantly changing,” Freese said. “We definitely have common configurations that we use over and over, but certain shoots require specific layouts. For instance, the way we will set up an LED video wall for a car process shot is completely different than what we would do for a narrative.”

With the deployment versatility of the Planar Venue Pro VX Series, Resolution Studios can also develop tailored strategies for best utilizing the LED displays across a shoot, optimizing production schedules. An example includes an episodic series primarily shot in the studio’s LED volume. “Near the end of the production, we will shoot up to 9 virtual locations a day by building a curved LED video wall on one side of our main studio and a flat LED video wall on the other,” Freese explained. “As we shoot on one video wall, a crew will prepare the other. Then, we swing our camera around and do it vice versa. It’s a very efficient way to shoot several locations in a really short amount of time.”

The mechanical properties of the Planar Venue Pro VX Series were not the only driving factor for its selection. Resolution’s investment was also based on visual performance for meeting the on-camera demands of VP and extended reality.

“We auditioned LED displays from all of the major manufacturers and the benefits of the Planar Venue Pro VX Series were readily apparent,” Freese said. “And we really liked what Planar was doing in VP, because it seems like a lot of LED display products are not designed for this use. Instead, it’s designed for ballrooms or trade shows and gets repurposed.”

According to Freese, the Planar Venue Pro VX Series was the leader in terms of color imagery, which he characterized as the single most important element. Second, Freese emphasized the off-axis image quality. “The Planar displays were astoundingly better in this area than any other option—it wasn’t even close,” he said. “At 45 degrees or at a very sharp angle, like 110 degrees, the displays maintained their desired performance. With a lot of other products, the video wall became sort of unusable at 40 to 60 degrees.”

Another factor included reflectivity. “As curved LED video walls get larger and larger, it can create problems with light pollution—the LED display becomes a giant reflective surface,” Freese said. “However, with the Planar Venue Pro VX Series, we didn’t have to deal with that.” With a unique mask and high contrast ratios, Planar LED video walls help to prevent reflections in virtual production applications.

Planar’s large U.S. presence also played a significant role in Resolution’s decision to invest in the Planar Venue Pro VX Series. “Most LED displays are manufactured internationally and many have very few U.S.-based employees,” Freese said. “If we ever have a question that needs to be addressed, I can get somebody from Planar on the phone in five minutes. That is not the case with a lot of the other manufacturers. Coming out of the pandemic, we made a large investment in Planar and the support they provide is very important. Planar has the right attitude of being a partner rather than a vendor.”

Boston Medical Group Does Digital Signage Using the AxisTV Signage Suite https://www.ravepubs.com/boston-medical-group-does-digital-signage-using-the-axistv-signage-suite/ boston medical https://www.ravepubs.com/boston-medical-group-does-digital-signage-using-the-axistv-signage-suite/#respond Tue, 12 Mar 2024 19:33:25 +0000 https://www.ravepubs.com/?p=264459 boston medical

Boston Medical Group has successfully transitioned its AxisTV 9 digital signage network to AxisTV Signage Suite, opening users and patients to a broader universe of features and benefits that add up to a more compelling digital signage experience.

The digital signage network is one of many responsibilities that Tahssin Alani carries as the IT department’s AV lead, and since joining the staff 10 years ago he had three main objectives: improve visual resolution, enhance functionality and extend the network to new locations. While the third element has happened naturally over time due to departmental enthusiasm, the switch to AxisTV Signage Suite has had a powerful effect on the first two.

“We’ve grown from 20 to 50 screens over my time here, and now have 29 departments with a presence on the network,” said Alani, whose official title is Field Service Analyst, Audio Visual Support. “Some departments contribute by advertising their services, and our communications department manages most of the content, which includes welcome messages, health notices, organizational awards, and our ‘Rewriting Healthcare’ series which features stories from patients, community partners, doctors and other staff members. I designed the templates for them to create layouts, and they publish the content. AxisTV Signage Suite makes that process very quick and easy, and the visual quality has substantially improved. The colors really pop, and people pay attention to the screens.”

It’s essential that people pay attention to the screens, as Visix developed a special application to keep visitors informed about wait times. Boston Medical Group’s strategy includes mixing in wait time slides with colorful public service announcements, informational slides and other content to keep screens lively and dynamic. All 29 departments active on the network leverage the wait time application to keep patients relaxed and eliminate repetitive trips to the front desk.

Alani says a small number of people from each department can adjust wait times from their desktop, laptop or mobile device by simply logging into the application, selecting their department and selecting a time interval from a drop-down menu. “It removes the ‘how long’ question from being asked over and over by multiple patients, reducing stress for all involved,” said Alani. “Visix created a very simple, orderly and intuitive interface with this application that has proved incredibly useful. It takes seconds to make an adjustment, and the changes are immediately replicated to the corresponding display. If the wait time was changed from 30 to 15 minutes, that adjustment will appear the next time the slide appears in the rotation.”

While Visix initially built this functionality into Boston Medical Group’s AxisTV 9 network, the transition to AxisTV Signage Suite offers many new possibilities that were previously not available. Alani is especially enthused about the software calendar application, which can connect with Outlook for conference room bookings and other departmental needs. He says this will bring value to all departments but particularly in the more executive and operations-focused buildings, such as the FGH Building and Carter Conference Center.

Alani anticipates continued expansion of the network into new buildings, and there are plans to add screens in satellite facilities. The same AxisTV Signage Suite platform will serve these other locations, including the Brockton Behavioral Health Center about 25 miles to the south. Separately, he is in discussions with Visix to roll out a wayfinding pilot.

“The growth of our network has been demand-driven,” said Alani, noting that new departments tend to come on as they learn how other departments benefit from its use. “The fact that we can do much more with this new platform will drive further expansion. We’re only using about 50 percent of AxisTV Signage Suite’s capabilities. There’s still a lot to learn, and we’ll gradually roll out new features and applications over time.”

BenQ Details Benefits of SmartEco 2.0 Tech to Schools in New Projectors https://www.ravepubs.com/benq-details-benefits-of-smarteco-2-0-tech-to-schools-in-new-projectors/ benq smarteco 2.0 https://www.ravepubs.com/benq-details-benefits-of-smarteco-2-0-tech-to-schools-in-new-projectors/#respond Tue, 12 Mar 2024 19:26:33 +0000 https://www.ravepubs.com/?p=264457 benq smarteco 2.0

BenQ is debuting something called SmartEco 2.0 technology. BenQ’s new SmartEco projectors use laser and LED technology with special chips that evaluate the colors needed for each frame and adjust the power according to the content rather than only reducing the overall brightness like the traditional eco mode on a legacy LCD classroom projector. It claims this means that without impacting the quality or the brightness of the picture, the projector can use up to one-third less power.

Cinegy Debuts Capture PRO Version 24.1 https://www.ravepubs.com/cinegy-capture-pro-version-24-1/ cinegy capture pro https://www.ravepubs.com/cinegy-capture-pro-version-24-1/#respond Tue, 12 Mar 2024 19:14:07 +0000 https://www.ravepubs.com/?p=264455 cinegy capture pro

Cinegy says it has added yet more power and functionality to its real-time ingest application Cinegy Capture PRO. The new release, version 24.1, claims to make multi-format and multi-resolution ingest simpler. Cinegy Capture PRO meets the need for real-time video to be recorded reliably and securely, and at the same time made available across the business as quickly as possible. Multiple engines can be controlled from a common, intuitive user interface, setting up and controlling ingest from SDI, IP (e.g. SRT, MPEG-TS, ST-2110) and NDI. Proxies, multi-resolution and multi-codec productions versions alongside the raw or archive media format can all be created at the same time and stored locally or written to one or multiple remote locations, to avoid any kind of storage failures. Required metadata can be automatically generated and stored to the media asset management system. The enhanced facilities now simplify the management and control of many encoding engines as a gang, accelerating routine operations further.

Reflecting the growing interest in Ultra HD production, Capture PRO version 24.1 fully supports the latest high-density Deltacast SDI ingest cards, allowing more 6G or 12G-SDI UHD/4k video channels to be captured with smaller hardware footprint. Likewise, the new BlackMagic Decklink IP cards are now supported, adding another option to capture SMPTE ST-2110 video.

Users who have standardized on the Avid DNxHR file format will benefit from greatly enhanced features, including full support for MXF Op1A. Capture PRO can also scale inputs down to 720p, and convert 10-bit Ultra HD color to 8-bit, when encoding from full HD or UHD sources. Of course, simulcast encoding of multiple formats is possible here too. This is all done as computationally efficiently as possible.

Retiring in the AV Industry: Advice From Someone Who’s Done it Twice https://www.ravepubs.com/retiring-in-the-av-industry-advice-from-someone-whos-done-it-twice/ retirement road ahead https://www.ravepubs.com/retiring-in-the-av-industry-advice-from-someone-whos-done-it-twice/#respond Tue, 12 Mar 2024 17:14:05 +0000 https://www.ravepubs.com/?p=264444
retirement road ahead

By Ron DeVoe

Since I have retired from the AV industry TWICE, I have been asked to offer advice or recognition of possible fallacies in retirement enjoyment. Because ownership of an AV business requires an enormous amount of mental energy for time and resource management, goal setting and attainment, cash flow and keeping up with the technology — turning off that daily, thought-provoking faucet proves to be impossible.

My greatest recommendation to the potential AV business owner/retiree is to first take a sabbatical for six weeks completely away from the business with no contact or communication. Many find that nervousness and frustration set in within a few nanoseconds, but that can be the best test to determine if one can really depart from a lifetime of work.
Understand, that as I have mentioned above, I’m on my second retirement — beware “they keep pulling you back”.

So, what are some of the challenges and possible ways to combat the “f………ing (frustrating) retirement?

ron devoe retirement 2
So, what are some of the challenges and possible ways to combat the “f………ing (frustrating) retirement?

Physical

Mother Nature seems to be on the lookout for the instant one retires to call out the semi-neglect of one’s multi-decade mass of skin and bones. I have one friend who confessed “every part of my body hurts and what does not hurt, itches.” Your joints can all be surgically repaired and then you will be placed in the loving and caring arms of therapists who will delight in providing PT … Physical Torture. Both the surgeons and the sadists delight in the fact that you will need even more joint work. Eyeballs, teeth and skin can be resurfaced and certain procedures that send film crews into your private parts are a coming attraction. Enjoy!

Financial

While I know plans were made to live in the lap of luxury, someone is always tightening that lap. “Out with the old and in with the new” is far less fun when it ushers in new roofs, new AC compressors and a new transmission in one month. The above medical discussion also continues to drain the remnants of your wallet.

Social

I attended my 55th high school reunion last fall, and was shocked by the number of older people. When I saw myself in the group picture, I was sorry to see how well I fit in. The new retiree will possibly find that what was late is now early. Restaurants are loud and you cannot hear yourself eating. Social events are yearned for like a root canal. Conversations that include “in my day” or “do you remember when” beget immediate drowsiness among your party. There are few social events requesting BYOC (Bring Your Own Curmudgeon).

Mental

Few AV retirees spend multiple hours in front of their new enormous 42” or 65” or 85” TV to delight in back-to-back episodes of “The Andy Griffith Show” or “Rawhide.” Some spend their time in front of their computer still trying to find that pearl of wisdom lurking in social media. Others are so uplifted by the enlightened chatter of network news that they have no problem forcing a perpetual frown.

OK, so now you’re aware of all of the challenges that are experienced by most retirees from the AV industry. Now, here are a few suggestions that have helped me to make this era in my life fulfilling, meaningful and enjoyable. I hope they do the same for you.

ron devoe retirement 3
  • Volunteer: There are countless opportunities to give back using your talent and experience. Beware that you may find the management, adherence to time and poorly run meetings a stepping stone to trip you into deeper commitments.
  • Self employment: Seek remote working positions as a board member or working on an advisory council. I found that my involvement as a day trader satisfied my “risk/reward” compulsion. The reward is rising early to see financial news, making trades and counting my pennies in the late afternoon.
  • Travel: I know that this is a long-sought reason for retiring. Overseas travel or cruises to far off lands are both exhilarating and life changing. However, it is not cheap and can greatly stretch that retirement budget if one dips into the nest egg too much. It is great to rediscover the U.S. Pack up your car with your spouse or significant other and hit the road to those places that you have not experienced or those that you visited and wished you had spent more time.
  • Family: Most of the retirees from the AV world now have grown children. Work conflicts often prevented coaching, participating in and or attending the numerous sporting events, concerts, recitals and so forth that your children were involved with. My daughters have been kind enough to provide me with grandchildren, and while it is probably a moral imperative that we older ones attend such functions, the enjoyment is insurmountable.
  • Bend, stretch, but don’t break: Golf, pickleball, Tai Chi and Yoga should be your new alternative to rock climbing, balance beam competitions and rugby.
  • Date Night: If you wooed your significant other back whenever by going out, get back to it. Dressing up and watching a play or enjoying a concert gets you out on the town and out of a rut.
  • Let the creative juices flow: I know many of my fellow AV retirees who have picked up their musical instruments and are picking or playing their way into some gigs. I know some who are painting, carving, singing and writing. I myself, am attempting to write screenplays and I am grateful to that number of people who have read my script — both of them.
ron devoe retirement4

The suggestions above only reflect my thoughts and ideas and may or may not be credible or applicable to all. But I have one last important thing to say: Our AV industry, though growing, is still a small community. I am thrilled to see the family-owned AV businesses pass down from generation to generation, giving greater meaning to the “AV family.” Retirees are still in the family and that family wants continued contact.

P.S. My daughter, Dee Dee, who has recently started TOTAL 2. 0, a new exciting independent representative firm, finds herself delivering another grandchild to us. I am coming back! We are all an AV Family!

LAS VEGAS, MARCH 11, 2024 DPA Microphones will highlight the standout features of its compact 2017 Shotgun Microphone at NAB 2024 (Booth C7307). From its durable construction and ease of use to its leading acoustical properties, the 2017 can capture the energy of any broadcast, AV or live event application. Measuring just 7.24 inches (184mm) in length, the 2017 is more compact than many popular solutions, yet it still offers impressive technological features, including extreme durability, high directivity, clarity and consistency for capturing authentic sound.

DPA has prioritized versatility with the 2017, creating an easy to set-up mic that is ideal for indoor or outdoor fixed or booming applications in live sports, news broadcast and location sound applications, as well as on a FOH boom or fly bar in venues during live events.

“Its flexibility, durable design and ability to withstand difficult environments or extreme weather make the 2017 ideal for broadcasters or live production professionals working in an array of applications,” says Helga Volha Somava, Product Management Director, DPA Microphones. “We built the 2017 to be a unique, all-purpose shotgun solution, and we look forward to showcasing it to our colleagues at NAB 2024.”

Designed to hold up to travel and repeated use in harsh environments, the 2017 can endure extreme weather and mechanical impact. The microphone persists in humid conditions and direct rain showers, as well as dry, arid environments. It has been tested for use in settings with temperatures up to 113°F (45°C) with 90-percent relative humidity, and cold environments as low as -40°F (-40°C). With a consistent ability to easily withstand the effects of moisture, the 2017 ensures that any broadcast or event can go live with incredible sound, no matter the setting or forecast.

Featuring a specially designed capsule that is perfectly paired with a cutting-edge interference tube and microphone grid, the 2017 offers outstanding performance, both on- and off-axis. It has a high degree of off-axis rejection, which permits the main source to stand out. This heavily attenuated off-axis audio is authentic and extremely usable for mixing into the entire soundscape. Audio professionals can now pick up accurate, clean sounds from even the most chaotic environments. For quieter locations, the 2017’s low self-noise promises an excellent performance, and accurately captures the nuance of every sound.

Emotion Systems Conquers File-Based Audio Automation at NAB 2024 https://www.ravepubs.com/emotion-systems-conquers-file-based-audio-automation-at-nab-2024/ Emotion Systems NAB image 1 Large https://www.ravepubs.com/emotion-systems-conquers-file-based-audio-automation-at-nab-2024/#respond Mon, 11 Mar 2024 18:05:35 +0000 https://www.ravepubs.com/?p=264421 Emotion Systems NAB image 1 Large

Emotion Systems, an established leader in media file processing will be showing their latest developments in workflow management. The need for normalizing ingested files and adding appropriate additional processing has never been more important, given the variety of different configurations available. The arrival of immersive audio formats, in addition to 5.1 or 7.1 surround, has increased the complexity of delivery standards demanded by different clients. Not only do the various channel configurations need to be archived correctly, but also Loudness Correction, Upmixing and Downmixing, Audio Description, and Dolby Encoding and Decoding are among the processes that may need to be applied. Emotion Systems supplies the technology to handle ingest on a batch file system and to apply these processes automatically, preserving or adding to the original metadata. This automated approach to file ingest saves the distributor valuable time and resources.

Traditionally, Emotion Systems has supported innovations as they have appeared and at NAB 2024, this continues to be the case. Of particular interest is the Immersive Mix Module, which allows content to be upmixed from stereo to surround and immersive mixes, enabling it to blend into live content. This module provides for live transitions for commercials, promos, or even archive footage to be easily blended into a live broadcast mix.

Audio description is an equally hot topic, with many countries now legislating on the percentage of programming that needs to be more accessible. Even if it is not a legal requirement, audio description is very much in demand. This provides the opportunity at NAB to focus on the Audio Description Module. These various modules are integral to the Emotion Systems’ Engine, which is the scalable and extremely versatile solution to managing the monitoring, processing, and metadata of ingested files. Engine is designed to integrate with popular MAM products from leading vendors, or to work stand-alone on any operating system platform.

Tradeshows always provide the opportunity to discuss developments with existing and future customers. Cloud technology continues to expand rapidly and this NAB, Emotion Systems is focusing on their cloud strategy. Customers are looking to migrate their own on-premises system into the cloud and have a combination of on-premises, in the cloud or hybrid working requirements. Emotion Systems’ CEO, MC Patel said; “Our success over the years has been very much due to our response to our customers requests. This has never been more true given the plethora of different audio formats and the rapid changes in workflows and storage, so we are looking forward to engaging with customers on where we go next.”

(March 11, 2024) –– Rise Vision, the #1 digital signage software is excited to announce the release of its newest case study featuring Redwood City School District. Redwood City, in California, uses Rise Vision to create dynamic content and improve communication around school nutrition.

In the case study, Abigail Rodriguez, an Account Specialist at Redwood City School District, shares how Rise Vision is used as a dynamic tool for conveying daily menus and relevant information to students.

Using Rise Vision digital signage and Health-e Pro, a cloud-based menu planning software, the school district has displays strategically placed in front of the “speed line”, where the students enter the cafeteria. The lunch menu and nutrition information is the first thing they see when they enter the lunch room.

The school district faced a common challenge related to communicating daily menus and important information to students. Abigail explained, “We used to have these paper signs, and it wasn’t working.” The transition from paper signs to vibrant digital displays has garnered positive feedback, with students now actively engaging with the content.
Jennifer Jennings, Growth Marketing Manager at Rise Vision commented, “We are thrilled to be part of Redwood City School District’s journey to provide nutrition information to their students. Redwood City’s use case is just one way that digital signage can be used to improve communication in schools.”

Redwood City School District’s success story shows how Rise Vision can be a valuable ally in promoting child nutrition by providing a modern, dynamic, and efficient means of communication.

PPDS, the exclusive global provider of Philips Professional Displays, is delighted to announce the installation of 13 “game-changing” Philips interactive displays at Oracle Red Bull Racing’s renovated MK-7 marketing team offices in Milton Keynes, UK, sending team collaboration and creative capability into overdrive.

Signaling the latest evolution of an ever-deepening partnership with the reigning Formula One World Championship Team – for which PPDS has been an official Team Supplier since 2022 – this exciting new project continues Oracle Red Bull Racing’s relentless focus on leading from the front both on and off the track and adhering to its internal motto: ‘to win and to do it differently’.

Housed in ORBR’s spectacular MK-7 offices in Milton Keynes – 50 miles (80kms) north of London – the Oracle Red Bull Racing brand continues to reach new heights, with a fan base that pervades all corners of the Earth.

With communications increasingly a key focus, its creative marketing team has expanded exponentially in recent years, representing the Oracle Red Bull Racing brand across all marketing channels, including its highly successful ‘Paddock’ fan reward site, partner program and, of course, its growing social media presence (4.5m followers on ‘X’ and 11.6m on Instagram to name just two).

In the fast-paced world of F1 racing, standing still is not an option, and teamwork is essential. With a proud track record of supporting ORBR with a range of custom-built solutions – from its headquarters through to the stylish Oracle Red Bull Racing hospitality suite in the Paddock Club – PPDS was the standout partner of choice to revolutionize the way its marketing teams communicate and collaborate, helping to drive new ideas and inspire greater project outcomes.

Following detailed discussions covering the ORBR marketing teams’ needs and ambitions for today and into the future, a fleet of 10 Philips Collaboration C-Line displays (65”-86”) – based on the Windows (8000 Series) and Android (6000 Series) OS – were integrated into the marketing team’s management offices, meeting rooms, and shared spaces, such as the ‘Break Out Zone’ and ‘Energy Lounge’.

Designed to enhance and inspire, the Philips Collaboration C-Line displays have proved themselves an instant game changer for the Oracle Red Bull Racing marketing team, transforming each space into a hive of activity, bringing new energy and enhanced productivity, and new collaborative working capabilities, throughout.

Every Opinion Counts

Bringing teams together like never before, the Philips Collaboration C-Line displays provide the marketing team with advanced and seamless wireless sharing capabilities, with up to 64 devices (people) able to simultaneously connect to the screen, for quick content switching between participants in the room as well as remotely.

Combining multi-touch technology with the Philips Collaboration displays’ whiteboard mode, users can write and draw directly on the screen – with near-zero latency, for more natural user experiences – either by hand or with dedicated markers, with all actions streamed back to all connected devices for easy file sharing.

High Impact Performance

Complementing the Philips Collaboration displays, two imposing 98” Philips Signage 4000 Series D-Line displays have been installed side by side in the marketing team’s ‘Paddock’ area, which features grandstand seating, with a single 86” model, installed in the Oracle Suite. Each is used to provide a variety of functions, including live coverage of track action and other associated events, delivering important team news, results and other energising content to the team.

One of PPDS’ most flexible and versatile Android SoC displays to date, the Philips Signage 4000 Series ensures all content is delivered with power and precision, fine-tuned to ensure specific colour and contrast guidelines for ORBR are achieved at all times.

For maximum versatility, the team also benefits from the Philips 4000 Series’ QuadViewer feature, transforming single displays into stylishly framed 2 x 2 videowalls with no interior bezels. Marketing teams can connect and play content from up to four independent sources simultaneously on the same screen – a great solution when multiple feeds need to be visible, such as broadcasting qualifying sessions or the race itself. A video showcasing the installations can be viewed here.

“Game Changer”

Discussing the project, Olly Hughes, Chief Marketing Officer at Oracle Red Bull Racing, commented: “We looked at several vendors, but PPDS and Philips Professional Displays were the ones that had the best product to answer what we were looking for.

“Getting the marketing teams together, working on content collaboratively, viewing it in sharp, bold contrast, on quality displays is really important. These Philips Professional Displays are a game changer and the perfect solution for our marketing office environment.”

Tim de Ruiter, Business Development Director at PPDS, added: “In the fast-paced world of F1 racing, there’s simply no substitute for teamwork. Technology, whether for building vehicles or creating inspirational and highly innovative marketing campaigns, plays a crucial role in achieving goals and ambitions. After meeting with the marketing team at MK-7, it was clear that bringing each team within the busy department together and providing them with the tools to collaborate on projects, share ideas and, crucially, celebrate their successes, was a key focus.

“It was a challenge we were happy to accept, and we are proud of the impact these state-of-the-art Philips Professional Displays, designed to meet the highest levels of demand, such as in F1, have already made in short space of time. We look forward to continuing to partner with Oracle Red Bull Racing, supporting them as they edge even further ahead of their competitors.”

SEATTLE, MARCH 11, 2024 ― Heading into USITT 2024 with an emphasis on education, ACT Entertainment, the industry-leading manufacturer and distributor of live performance and music equipment, will host a total of six educational sessions at this year’s show in Room Chelan 5 (downstairs). The demo room will also serve as a learning space for hands-on product experiences for attendees. Additionally, the ACT booth (Booth 2611) will showcase the latest solutions from the company’s various manufactured and distributed brands, including Ayrton, MA Lighting, MDG, Robert Juliat and zactrack.

Due to popular demand at last year’s show, five of the educational sessions will focus on MA Lighting’s grandMA3 console. Founded on the legacy of the previous grandMA consoles, the grandMA3 represents a radical re-think of what’s possible from a lighting control platform. The elegant new system architecture incorporates new fixtures, features and effects-handling at its very heart.

Titled “Getting to Know grandMA3,” each of these hour-long sessions will feature a full overview of the latest console and how it works. The demonstrations will be presented by ACT Technical Support Team Members Amanda Gougelmann and Dustin Barnes, on Thursday at 9:30 a.m. and 2 p.m., Friday at 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. and Saturday at 11 a.m. Attendees will be provided with access to hands-on experience with the console during open learning periods at 12:30 and 3:30 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, and at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Additionally, a deeper dive into zactrack, the automated tracking system designed for use with lighting, audio and other automation, will take place on Friday from 2 to 3:15 p.m. in the same space. Gougelmann and Barnes will take on the discussion of real time tracking and the benefits of using the system in a session called “Real Time Tracking.” Attendees will also be able to get a closer look at zactrack either on display at the ACT booth or on the USITT mainstage, which will feature a deployed zactrack mini.

Finally, ACT Entertainment is sponsoring a variety of events throughout the show, including the Annual USITT Party on Friday evening at the Museum of Pop Culture.
