Higher Ed Still Offers Lucrative Opportunities
By Scott Tiner rAVe Columnist
In the last couple of days, I have run across a few things that have made me remember that education is a little slower in adopting technologies than other industries. Please remember as I write this, I love where I work. I actually think we are very advanced technically and always continue to advance. What I write about is more to help the integrators in our industry realize we still have huge gaps in higher education that need service.
The first surprising thing for me was when I walked into our main academic building. I looked at the digital sign, and noticed the content on it. Then, I looked next to it and saw a tripod with a printed sign on it. The sign was advertising an event administration wanted students to attend. It immediately hit me. We were not doing something correctly with the digital sign. After all, if we need to post printed signs directly next to it, then the digital sign is not getting the attention we need.
The opening here for integrators? Clearly, we need some support in creating and and managing our digital signs. Why are we investing money in the signs, if they are clearly not working? Why don’t we have metrics on the responses and viewing of the signs? We are wasting energy, time and money if these signs are not working as intended. Additionally, this observation comes at the same time as another revelation. Students don’t use email! It has been an issue at the higher education level for a while. In fact, even the New York Times had an article several months ago, on college students who did not know what email is. The question persists then. How do we communicate with students? How do we let them know of events at the college? How do we let them know about opportunities available to them? Perhaps, as e-mail has become less important over time, so has traditional digital signage. If you are an AV/IT integrator, this is an excellent opportunity for you to help your customers.
A second time actually occurred in two instances over the course of the day. First, I reserved a room in one of our buildings for a meeting I was having that day. When I arrived at the room, there was a paper schedule on the door of the reservations for the day. Mine was not on the paper. I assume it was because I made the reservation after the schedule was printed. So, it got me thinking: In 2016 do we really do this? Print out a schedule every day and put it on the door of the room? We have a schedule that is obsolete immediately after being put up. This results is less spontaneous meetings or huddles, and a tendency to over reserve rooms, therefore wasting valuable space.
This was driven home to me even further later that evening as I sat down and read rAVe Pubs. An article from Sara was about the new Extron Room Agent 1.2. The software runs on their touchpanels and allows it to be used as a schedule agent that shows a room’s availability and equipment. Certainly, this type of technology is not new. It has been in existence for years, from several vendors, including other AV companies and furniture companies. Yet, here we are, still printing signs, and I am quite sure we are not alone.
So, integrators and vendors around the country. Here are two great opportunities for you. My standard reminders applies. Don’t show up in my office and tell me for a “small” investment of a couple hundred thousand dollars, we can have this in all our rooms. Rather, come and find out what I already have. Then suggest ways that you can help me use those installs for room scheduling. We don’t have touchpanels at our doorways, and we are not going to start. So, how do we integrate the room scheduling onto the touchpanels in our rooms. Will you also have IT people available who can help us integrate the programming with our rooms schedules? Are you willing to look at this project as a multiple year project, so we can spread out the cost? If you continue to be creative, offer me solutions I need and provide my college value, then there is still an opportunity available to you. Leave a Comment

Crestron Ships 4K/60 Fiber Solutions DigitalMedia Crestron announced that it is now shipping 4K/60 fiber solutions across its DigitalMedia product line. Comprised of 4K/60 fiber transmitter and receiver endpoints in both box and card-based options, these are all HDMI HDCP 2.2 capable. The new two-rack-space (2RU) DigitalMedia Fiber Card Chassis (DMF-CI-8) accommodates up to eight of the new 4K/60 fiber cards and is typically located near a traditional DM matrix switcher. Not a matrix switch, the chassis serves as a power supply and consolidation point. It can be used with any DM solution, from the smallest HDMI switcher, to an 8×8 or even a 128×128 to extend 4K/60 over fiber.
The DigitalMedia Fiber Transmitter Card (DMCF-TX-4K-SFP) and DigitalMedia Fiber Receiver Card (DMCF-RX-4K-SFP) are independent and rely on the chassis for power only. Any combination of transmitter or receiver card can be loaded into the chassis to make custom configurations possible. The fiber transmitter and receiver cards can be thought of as extenders from and to DM 4K/60 HDMI inputs and outputs.
The DigitalMedia Fiber Transmitter (DMF-TX-4K-SFP) and companion DigitalMedia Fiber Receiver (DMF-RMC-4K-SFP) are endpoints that can be connected to each other on a one-to-one basis for simple extender applications — or they can be deployed as endpoints connected to cards in the chassis.

Leyard Breaks 1-Millimeter Pixel Pitch Barrier — New 0.9-Millimeter Leyard TWA Series LED Video Wall MonitorLeyard just launched a 0.9-millimeter TWA Series LED video wall display. As you likely know, the pixel pitch of an LED display is the distance from the center of an LED cluster to the center of the next LED cluster, measured in millimeters.
The Leyard TWA Series 0.9mm joins the existing Leyard TWA Series line of fine pitch LED video walls available in 1.2, 1.4, 1.8 and 2.5 millimeter pitches. Leyard TWA Series LED displays are spec’d to use 35 percent less power than conventional LED displays. When the display is in standby mode with a black screen, it consumes up to 60 percent less power than the most power-efficient LED video wall displays on the market today.
The Leyard TWA Series is the first LED video wall solution to feature an innovative “flat panel” design that includes a 16:9 form factor optimized for the most popular high resolution standards. Leyard TWA Series displays are self-contained units with standard HDMI inputs and looping, along with optional redundant configurations. The larger 54-inch cabinet means more of the video wall is factory-aligned, easing the time and cost of installation with fewer displays to align and seams to perfect. The larger units also mean that fewer displays are needed to create a video wall, reducing the potential points-of-service.
The 0.9-mm Leyard TWA Series display specs are here. Leave a Comment

Fulcrum Acoustic Launches Cardioid Subwoofer Product Line Fulcrum Acoustic has launched its latest in the form of a line of Cardioid Subwoofers. Fulcrum Cardioid Subwoofers are designed with patent-pending Passive Cardioid Technology to overcome the excessive rear low frequency (LF) radiation that is a major challenge of many loudspeakers.
Fulcrum’s Passive Cardioid Technology, first introduced in their FL283 and FLS115 line array products, is now the basis for a line of Cardioid Subwoofers which includes CS118 18-inch and CS121 21-inch models.
Fulcrum’s unique Cardioid Subwoofers eliminate excessive rear LF radiation without the extra cost, space requirements and inconvenience of active cardioid systems, with a single passive cardioid speaker doing the work of an active cardioid array. By achieving impressive LF directional control without additional amplifiers, drivers or signal processors in less than half the space required for active cardioid array systems, Fulcrum Cardioid Subwoofers allow for cardioid arrays in applications that might not otherwise have the budget or space to accommodate an active cardioid solution.
Fulcrum speakers’ subcardioid behavior is produced by an acoustical circuit which balances the position of the low frequency driver, the enclosure depth and volume, and specially constructed rear-mounted ports which include a calibrated resistive element. By opting for a subcardioid pattern as opposed to a pure, hyper or super cardioid pattern, the rear rejection increases when the modules are deployed in an array.

Gefen Enters 4K Over IP Market Gefen, from Core Brands, today introduced two new 4K Ultra (3840×2160) HD Video over IP products. The new sender and receiver KVM units (the EXT-UHDV-KA-LANS-TX and EXT-UHDV-KA-LANS-RX) join the existing line of 1080p video over IP products and add 4K and HDR support, a built-in scaler, video-wall controller, Power-over-Ethernet (PoE), and digital/analog audio break-out. These are over a 1 Gig LAN thus, the signal is significantly compressed.
The new Gefen models feature HDMI and VGA inputs and outputs, and can support DVI when using Gefen HDMI-to-DVI cables. They support HDMI input resolutions up to 4K 60Hz 4:2:0 and output resolutions up to 4K 30Hz 4:4:4, HDR support, HDCP 2.2 and 1.4, and 7.1 channels of HBR (High Bit Rate) lossless and LPCM digital audio up to 330 feet (100 meters). The Sender also features a VGA output for local monitoring of the input. The VGA input and output support VESA resolutions up to 1920×1200 at 60Hz (WUXGA). This product also provides RS232 and two-way IR routing between the Sender and the Receiver units, allowing the transfer of IR commands and RS232 communications among all sources and the displays.
With HDMI and VGA selectable inputs, HDMI and VGA outputs, USB/KVM routing ability, 4K with HDR support and an array of new cutting-edge enhancements, the Gefen Video over IP product addresses the needs of systems integrators. Gefen is unique in delivering the enhanced network security made possible by separating the control and AV networks when using the Gefen EXT-CU-LAN Matrix Controller.
PoE (Power over Ethernet) allows the units to be powered through a standard PoE-enabled IP network switch, without the need for external power supplies. Built in scaler and video wall controller provide great flexibility in sizing and manipulating live and signage content in installations such as sports bars and restaurants, or corporate, education, hospitality and retail establishments. Additionally, digital and analog audio break-out allow the audio from the HDMI output to be sent to a separate audio system, enhancing the impact of presentations in large venues.
USB inputs and the four-output USB hub accommodate touch panels, a keyboard and mouse, and a variety of supported USB devices. This feature — along with analog audio inputs and outputs for use with microphones and headphones — makes these products perfect to use in collaborative and interactive installations in signage, hospitality, corporate and educational environments.
The cable run from a Sender to a Receiver can be up to 100 meters (330 feet). A built in Gigabit switch on each receiver allows the connection of additional receivers, providing daisy-chaining functionality. In applications such as digital signage, where there may be a need to replicate content on multiple displays throughout an installation, the ability to cascade receivers essentially removes the requirement for a cable to be connected directly to the main network switch, thereby extending the range of these units far beyond the limits of a point-to-point video distribution system.
The Sender features a 1U tall and half-rack-width enclosure, though it can also be surface mounted or be placed on a shelf. The Receiver can be surface-mounted or placed on a shelf. It is also rack mountable using the rack tray, but features a low profile enclosure that can fit in tight places. The IR Extender module allows this receiver to be hidden away behind a display or in the equipment closet.

For all you REGULAR readers of rAVe ED [Education] out there, hopefully you enjoyed another opinion-packed issue!
For those of you NEW to rAVe, you just read how we are — we are 100 percent opinionated. We not only report the news and new product stories of the ProAV industry, but we stuff the articles full of our opinions. That may include (but is not limited to) whether or not the product is even worth looking at, challenging the manufacturers on their specifications, calling a marketing-spec bluff and suggesting ways integrators market their products better. But, one thing is for sure, we are NOT a trade publication that gets paid for running editorial or product stories. Traditional trade publications get paid to run product stories — that’s why you see what you see in most of the pubs out there. We are different: We run what we want to run and NO ONE is going to pay us to write anything good (or bad).
