The Video “Easy Button”
By Scott Tiner rAVe Columnist
Several years ago, Staples developed the marketing campaign of the Easy Button. The concept was that going to Staples was as easy as pressing a single button and getting what you needed. I always thought that this should be the concept for touchpanels and control systems in our classrooms. Yet, there always seems to be more needed than that one button can manage.
Last year we opened a new Digital Media Studio. The space includes high end editing suites, a computer lab and an amazing multimedia studio, with lights, cameras, sound and various colored backdrops. The studio is fabulous because we can create very high end, professional video in the space. Our students have the opportunity to learn about lighting, sound and other skills needed for quality video.
As video needs continue to grow at our institution and all other educational institutions, we have more and more customers who want “quality” video, but don’t want to learn how to use all the equipment in the studio. They want a final product, not a technical education, much like our faculty simply want to present in a classroom, not spend time learning how to hook up equipment. Many of our faculty had done some recordings in their office with their laptops’ webcams and microphones, but were not satisfied with the results. We were stuck between customers wanting a product that was easy to create, but looked and sounded better than what they could do in their office.
Our digital media specialists came across an interesting installation at Penn State, the One Button Studio. The design of the studio is well documented on Penn’s website, but what is so interesting is the ease of use for users. Users literally walk into the studio and insert a thumb drive into a USB hub. That automatically turns the system on. Lights, Camera, Action! When the customer is ready to start recording, she presses a button, kinda like the easy button. When finished, she presses it again. She grabs the thumb drive and is on her way with a professional looking and sounding recording.
This summer we are planning a similar installation. Due to our specific needs, it is not likely we will use the One Button software, but our installation is intended to be just as easy to use. Our customers have already come to us with several projects that the room will serve well. One of the uses is for our student academic support group to have students give run-throughs of presentations in the room and record them. Then, they sit down together and review the presentation and help with any changes that need to be made. A second, and obvious use, is for faculty to add video recordings to their class offerings. Whether this is intended as part of a flipped classroom, or simply additional tutorials is dependent on the needs of the faculty.
We also have several other administrative users who desire to record technical training or provide training on issues like Title IX compliance. Rather than perform these activities over and over again, they will be able to stop by the studio and easily make a recording, and then post it on their website.
For an integrator, this type of room provides an excellent opportunity to offer value to a school. If you are able to understand how this room works, and able to listen to your customers about what their specific needs are, you can offer them a solution that is unique, and profitable. Perhaps the biggest challenge for an integrator will be to make it simple. A challenge because your customers will continue to tell you about additional needs and desires. Yet, you will need to keep in mind that the primary desire is simplicity. The goal of our studio will be to NOT have to do any training at all. It will be so simple that people can walk in the first time and start using it. As you deal with customers you may need to remind them of that primary goal. It is likely you will also need to remind your designers about it, as they may tend to want to add features and equipment. Leave a Comment

AtlasIED Launches Strategy III Series In-Ceiling SpeakersAtlasIED just launched the FAP Strategy III Series ceiling loudspeakers integrated with a Safety First Mounting System (SFMS). This technology prevents mounting tab damage during installation that other offerings suffer. The damage is caused by over torqueing during the installation process. This excessive torque can damage the mounting tabs that over time can increase the chance of mounting tab breakage and the loudspeaker falling from the ceiling. The SFMS is the result of over 100 tested prototypes until the final design was approved. This patent pending technology uses t-handles that are integrated into the front of the loudspeaker baffle to tighten the mounting tabs in materials up to 3/4″.
According to AtlasIED, the SFMS also decreases installation time by up to 60 percent. Its mounting design is simple install steps without the need for any tools. A front mounted 70V tap selector allows installers to quickly adjust and set the 70V power taps. A removable four-pole euro-style connector allows for easy pre-wiring and daisy chaining of additional loudspeakers and subwoofers. The result is fewer labor costs and better profits. The improved waveguide design provides wider coverage than previous models. The benefit is cost savings due to fewer loudspeakers required, while still maintaining uniform sound throughout. Low-frequency response is enhanced and deeper bass definition is provided via the optimized low frequency tuning port. Additionally all models are safety listed to both UL1480 and UL2043.

Panasonic Debuts 4K Projector That’s Really 5KPanasonic just introduced at InfoComm the PT-DZ21KU, the company’s first beyond 4K screen resolution projector. The PT-DZ21KU projector was shown performing image projection mapping onto a Tesla Model S (here’s the video we shot of it at InfoComm).
The PT-DZ21KU 4K+ Projector With 4K+ screen resolution (5,120×3,200) and Quad Pixel Drive technology and they say it is the most compact and lightweight 4K+ 3-chip DLP laser projector in the world. The projector is spec’d at 10,000 lumens of brightness and a contrast ratio of 20,000:1 using laser light. The projector’s pixel is shifted both horizontally and vertically at a high frame rate of 240 Hz, physically creating four different pixels from a single pixel, effectively quadrupling the pixel density of the image. To optimize for fluid, detailed, high-contrast images, the PT-DZ21KU leverages what they call a Detail Clarity Processor that analyzes pixel information. The new projector is spec’d at 20,000-hour light-source life. Providing system and installation flexibility, the Multi-Screen Support System allows screens to seamlessly join with edge blending, color matching and digital image enlarging. In addition, the PT-DZ21KU uses DIGITAL LINK — based on HDBaseT technology — that reduces cost and complexity of installation by allowing transmission of HD video, audio and control commands through a single CAT5e cable.
The PT-DZ21KU is aimed for a wide variety of applications including rental and staging, auditorium, museum, control room, and house of worship. The PT-DZ21KU will be available in the fall of 2015.

Da-Lite Unveils New Product for Large Venue InstallsWhen designing large venues, ballrooms or architecturally appealing rooms, a consultant, integrator or architect may feel conflicted when installing a traditional screen in a room with high ceilings that will require a lot of black drop to accommodate the AV needs and an appropriate screen viewing height. The Wireline Advantage from Da-Lite is the aesthetic solution to this design challenge.
The Wireline Advantage is a projection screen for large venues that uses thin steel cables instead of black drop to lower the viewing area to an appropriate height for the audience. The result is stunning with a large screen that is almost invisibly suspended at the right viewing height, leaving the architecture of the room exposed.
The Wireline Advantage housing can be ceiling recessed and features the easy installation brackets and self-trimming edge that is inherent to the Advantage line. The Wireline Advantage will feature cable lengths up to 29 feet, and will be available to order in November 2015.

For all you REGULAR readers of rAVe ED [Education] out there, hopefully you enjoyed another opinion-packed issue!
For those of you NEW to rAVe, you just read how we are — we are 100 percent opinionated. We not only report the news and new product stories of the ProAV industry, but we stuff the articles full of our opinions. That may include (but is not limited to) whether or not the product is even worth looking at, challenging the manufacturers on their specifications, calling a marketing-spec bluff and suggesting ways integrators market their products better. But, one thing is for sure, we are NOT a trade publication that gets paid for running editorial or product stories. Traditional trade publications get paid to run product stories — that’s why you see what you see in most of the pubs out there. We are different: We run what we want to run and NO ONE is going to pay us to write anything good (or bad).
