Xbox TV to Ship This Christmas
By Steve Sechrist
Sr. Editor and Analyst, Insight Media With its 53 million devices shipped and 35 million paid subscribers in tow, Microsoft’s new Xbox TV initiative is poised to go where no CE/PC company has gone before. In Anaheim last week, at a financial analysts meeting, CEO Steve Balmer revealed the company will ship an Xbox TV in the US in time for the Christmas buying season.
Truth be told, Xbox had moved well beyond gaming before this announcement. Frank Shaw, Microsoft Corp. Communications VP, made the point in his pre-E3 Game conference blog back in May called: Xbox (Now That’s Entertainment). "Just for starters, we’ve sold more than 53 million Xbox 360 consoles, and Xbox has been the top-selling console in the last year. There are more than 30 million Xbox LIVE members. And more than 10 million Kinects have sold to date. Those are pretty big numbers for a device that, until recently, had primarily been purchased by hardcore gamers. But something interesting has happened in the last few years. While people are still playing a ton of video games, 40 percebt of all Xbox activity is now non-game. Put another way, we’re seeing an average of 30 hours of video consumption per month per Xbox, a number that is growing fast. And people are expecting more – more options, more games, more videos, more entertainment.
The company is already providing TV content via ESPN, Netflix, Hulu and a partnership with AT&T’s U-Verse service. Beyond the U.S., in the Europe and Australia, the company goes even further. Microsoft already has TV content distribution relationships with Sky TV in the U.K., Canal Plus in France and FoxTel in Australia. Word on the street is that the company is looking to bring in both Comcast and Verizon Fios TV packages, creating an Xbox TV experience without the need for another set-top-box. There is even talk of offering Xbox via Samsung Smart TVs. Hints from Microsoft of extended content deals came as early as E3 when Xbox Live’s Marc Whitten was reported by MSNBC as saying the company would increase their entertainment partnerships by a factor of ten this year.
But beyond content, the biggest challenge to bringing over the top content into the living room has been UI and control. Case in point, the over-engineered Sony remote control for GoogleTV. And while MS CEO Steve Balmer sees its Bing Search services as a key differentiator to the Xbox offering, it’s the voice activation, and Kinect gesture that really sets the service apart. "Certainly we all know the frustrations of using guides and menus and controllers, and we think a better way to do all of this is simply to bring Bing and voice to Xbox. You say it, Xbox finds it," Balmer said at the Anaheim Investors meeting.
We think the idea of combining these services with more traditional search (MS Bing) plus voice and gesture activation (Kinect) will help create a true 21st century interface with all digital content. And this, along with 53 million plus devices already deployed is a very good start to what just could be the hot new must-have device for Christmas.

Share Article Back to Top Auralex Intros Bamboo-Based Sound Diffusors Auralex Acoustics last week launched a line of acoustical products made from 100 percent Eco-Friendly bamboo. The company has dubbed it the Sustain Bamboo Sound Diffusor Series. The new line, which consists of the WavePrism, WaveLens, QuadraTec, Peak Pyramid Diffusor and KeyPacs, retains the longevity and acoustical qualities Auralex is known for with the green and acoustical properties of natural bamboo.
The Auralex WavePrism eliminates flutter echoes and other acoustical anomalies without removing acoustical energy from the space. The closed box design of the product disperses sound evenly to create a more consistent audio environment. The WavePrism is sized to drop into a suspended ceiling grid or can be wall mounted using mechanical fasteners.
Auralex WaveLens’ open-boxed design scatters and redirects acoustical energy. The WaveLens can be beneficial in numerous applications as it can create a “large sound” in a small room, while optimizing existing absorption panels by redirecting the sound energy.
The QuadraTec’s unique tiered design provides excellent scattering properties, resulting in a warm, musical character to the dispersed sound. The nested pair offers two unique diffusion tools that, when used in combination with each other, can result in a more spacious feel in any room. The lightweight design allows QuadraTec diffusors to be placed in suspended ceiling grids or attached to wall surfaces with mechanical fasteners.
Auralex’s Peak Pyramid Diffusor is optimized to provide high-quality sound diffusion while also doubling as an effective bass trap when filled with absorptive material. These lightweight, sturdy, pyramid-shaped diffusors are sized so that they can be easily dropped into a suspended ceiling grid or installed onto wall surfaces using mechanical fasteners.
KeyPacs are designed to be mounted to the face of absorptive panels; such as, Auralex’s ProPanels or Studiofoam. According to Auralex, these specifically designed panels will fine-tune existing absorption treatment to be more effective in the low and mid range while not killing off the higher frequencies ― yielding a room that is well balanced across the frequency range. KeyPacs are available in three configurations ― 9 Hole, Bubble and Star.
Bamboo is the fastest growing woody plant in the world and, when placed in the proper climate, can grow up to eight feet a day. Bamboo, which has the strength characteristics of traditional hardwoods, is actually a grass and therefore provides environmental sustainability that traditional hardwoods cannot. It’s important to note that the type of bamboo used in the production of this product is different than the bamboo that pandas and other animals use for food.

Share Article Back to Top Samsung Partners with Planar to Bring High-End Digital Art to the Home This is PERFECTLY positioned for the custom installer and it's something we at rAVe think you should take a close, close look at. Read on and we'll address why afterwards.
Samsung and Planar will soon demo the first prototypes of the SAMSUNG SM’ART Gallery Frames. The Gallery Frames use Samsung’s LCD panel technology to enable artists to display their work through a completely new medium. In addition, you could, eventually, see an explosion of "digital artists" who are amazingly talented (and are currently relegated to designing website banners) but have nowhere to "sell" their art adopt this as a platform for the future of art in homes and commercial spaces.
Samsung envisions a future where consumers can purchase the Internet-connected SAMSUNG SM’ART Gallery Frames and browse through countless works of digital art that have been uploaded to the cloud. And, whenever you tire of a piece of art, you can simply browse through galleries of work from artists all over the globe to find a new piece of art to fit your mood and lifestyle. Today’s unknown artist will have the ability to connect with people around the world that want to purchase and own a work that they would may have never seen otherwise.
So, why should you care? Well, it all comes down to two words — selling content. The future of our market is managing, delivering and selling content, not gear. While selling gear will always be a place for us to flourish and we should always stay ahead of the consumer, big-box sales mentality and process, selling content is really where the margins and intellectual property lies. The New York Times addressed this potential last month: http://www.nytimes.com/2011/08/26/arts/design/harun-farocki-video-installation-at-moma-review.html?_r=1
So, check it out as Samsung’s Scott Birnbaum, vice president of New Business Development next Monday, Sept. 26 or Tuesday, Sept. 27 in Time Warner Square (Samsung Experience). We'll keep you posted on the project but if you're in the NYC area, go! Leave a Comment

Share Article Back to Top Have $200,000 Laying Around? Runco's Got 3D a Projector for You Last week at CEDIA, Runco announced the latest extension of its 3Dimension family, the new 3Dimension D-113d projection system. The D-113d pairs Runco's Constant Stereoscopic Video (CSV) approach with the optical filters and glasses from the Panavision 3D System, which are the ones in many movie theaters now. The result, according to Runco, is the brightest CSV projection in the world at up to 20,000 lumens (2D) and 4,000 lumens (3D) using four mercury lamps.
In the D-113d, Runco's CSV technology is paired with the spectral filtration technology of the Panavision 3D System. In the Panavision 3D System, the entire visible spectrum is sliced into ten slim bands – with five directed to the left eye and five to the right. The result: each eye receives the same amount of total white light energy so the images appear equal in brightness and provide the truest color reproduction. Runco has utilized this technology from the Panavision 3D System in its PreciseColor passive glasses. This differentiates Runco's passive approach from other high-end 3D projection systems, which are based on "active" LCD shutter-glass technology.
It's priced at $200,000. Details are here: http://www.runco.com/_webapp_3988945/Runco_3Dimension%E2%84%A2_D-113d_Projector Leave a Comment

Using three, 0.7-inch 1920×1080 D-ILA imagers, the DLA-F110E claims flicker-free images with true blacks in a 3D design. JVC’s so-called wire-grid optical engine helps deliver a 30,000:1 contrast ratio and 1,700 ANSI lumens for brightness. For 3D presentations, the DLA-F110E is compatible with JVC’s PK-AG1 active shutter 3D glasses and PK-EM1 3D signal emitter (sold separately). Designed to be a "take it out of the closet and project a movie" type projector, the 850HD and 50 models have both VGA and HDMI ports as well as Epson's plug-n-play USB connectivity.
We do like this projector, but think Epson MISSED THE BOAT since we think, instead of doing this, they should have integrated Apple's AirPlay (the wireless streaming video and audio connectivity) into a line of projectors so you can stream movies and TV shows to it without having to dock a device. Share Article Back to Top Sony Adds Silicon Image InstaPort on Nearly Every New TV Silicon Image and Sony both announced today that Silicon Image’s InstaPort technology will be added to nearly the entire range of Sony’s 2011 Bravia LCD TV models. Silicon Image port processors offer advanced DTV features such as InstaPort fast port switching technology, built-in HDCP decryption engines plus four HDMI inputs in a highly integrated switching product designed to reduce BOM costs while boosting performance. Sony’s 2011 LCD TV models feature InstaPort technology to reduce port switching time between HDMI-enabled devices connected to the LCD TV. InstaPort-enabled DTVs will work with any HDMI-connected source device to enhance the consumer’s HD experience by significantly reducing the delay that typically occurs when switching between devices.
Port processors are platforms for innovation that offer new features, technologies and standards for DTVs that go above and beyond the basic HDMI switch function offered by analog switches. In addition to InstaPort, the port processor featured in Sony’s Bravia LCD TV models offers integrated HDMI receivers with dynamic equalization to deliver uncompressed HD video, multi-channel audio and data over HDMI cables.

Share Article Back to Top Sharp Debuts 80" LED-Based LCD Yesterday Sharp launched the largest LED LCD TV to date, the 80-inch AQUOS (80-inch diagonal) LC-80LE632U — a 1080p (1920×1080) display using Sharp's Smart TV technology that's equipped with built-in Wi-Fi and 120Hz capability. Using a full array LED backlighting system (not edge-lit) to get better uniformity in both color and brightness, the display has what Sharp claims is a contrast ratio of 6,000,000:1. And, although this being market as a HomeAV HDTV, this can easily be used in both Pro and DS (digital signage) applications because of the LED backlight system. It's also made on a commercial production line — although Sharp doesn't necessarily want you to know that.
The LC-80LE632U will list at $5,499 and ship next month.

Back to Top For all you REGULAR readers of rAVe HomeAV Edition out there, hopefully you enjoyed another opinion-packed issue!
For those of you NEW to rAVe, you just read how we are — we are 100% opinionated. We not only report the news and new product stories of the high-end HomeAV industry, but we stuff the articles full of our opinions. That may include (but is not limited to) whether or not the product is even worth looking at, challenging the manufacturers on their specifications, calling a marketing-spec bluff and suggesting ways integrators market their products better. But, one thing is for sure, we are NOT a trade publication that gets paid for running editorial or product stories. Traditional trade publications get paid to run product stories — that’s why you see what you see in most of the pubs out there. We are different: we run what we want to run and NO ONE is going to pay us to write anything good (or bad).

A little about me: I graduated from Journalism School at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (where I am adjunct faculty). I’ve been in the AV-industry since 1987 where I started with Extron and eventually moved to AMX. So, I guess I am an industry veteran (although I don’t think I am that old). I have been an opinionated columnist for a number of industry publications and in the late 1990s I started the widely read KNews eNewsletter (the first in the AV market) and also created the model for and was co-founder of AV Avenue – which is now known as InfoComm IQ. rAVe Publications has been around since 2003, when we launched our original newsletter, rAVe ProAV Edition.
rAVe HomeAV Edition, co-published with CEDIA, launched in February, 2004.
