Episode 20: What We Learned in 2016
In this episode, Alexis La Broi (@AlexisLaBroi) joins host Christa Bender (@AVChrista) to discuss what they learned in 2016. Christa continues to mispronounce the company Alexis works for (she’ll get it right one day). Christa and Alexis talk about what trends they think will continue into 2017.
They talk about their love of remote working and Alexis furthers the conversation based on an article she read titled, “Scrap Your Work From Home Policy.”
They wrap up the conversation talking about books and television shows that they are watching. Alexis mentions reading Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? by Mindy Kaling.
Notice anything different with the audio? Christa is using her new Blue Yeti microphone to record this show.
These topics and more can be heard on this episode of Tech Chaos.

Episode 53: QSC’s ISE Plans Include Q-SYS Flex I/O Expander and Core 510i
rAVe Founder, Gary Kayye, heads over to Amsterdam for ISE next month and he’ll be joined by Victoria Barela where they’ll be recording dozens of live podcasts all on the ISE show floor at the Amsterdam RAI. But, before heading over, he caught up with QSC’s Martin Barbour, their product manager for installed systems, who used our trade show minute podcast to launch two new products, the Q-SYS Core 510i Integrated Core Processor and the new Q-SYS Flex I/O Expander. So, where do these fit in to the Q-SYS Platform and how they are revolutionary products!
QSC will be at ISE in stand 7-Q170 and you should absolutely put them on your plans as, in addition to these two products, they will be launching a major initiative that NO ONE else in the market can currently match. Details to come later this month! In the meantime, all their ISE plans are here: http://www.qsc.com/systems/ise-2017/

Episode 9: Episode 9? More Like 9000
It’s the 9th episode of the Floating Point, and host Hope Roth (@beerandpie) is joined by Hal Dalzell (@MatthewArthur14), a programmer from the Frozen North, aka Canada, aka America’s Hat.
Hal is an honest to goodness engineer, got his start at the Canadian Broadcasting Company (Hope whiffed on her chance to make a Trailer Park Boys joke), and now works at the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton.
Hope and Hal talk about the joys and challenges of working in higher education, how you can bring a semblance of order into chaos, and what you should do if your wifi connection goes down. Say, right smack dab in the middle of a podcast. This is why we architect self-contained systems, people.
We finish with some tales of awkward moments in front of full classrooms, and solemnly swear to never cancel a lecture just because power point stopped working.

Episode 561: What Did Planar & Leyard Do at InfoComm?
BrightSign CEO, Jeff Hastings, used rAVe RADIO to announce their new partnership with digital signage CMS provider ONELAN. Brightsign has integrated the ONELAN CMS as an option for their digital signage players and this is a great partnership – especially if you do retail signage. And, of course, they’ll demo this at ISE next week in Hall 8 booth/stand K240.

Episode 559: Join Me for a FREE GreenAV Webinar on Tuesday
On Tuesday, January 31st, I will kick-off my first 2017 webinar in partnership with Almo ProAV. The topic will be all about how you can make more money, as an integrator, by specifying, selling and integrating GreenAV products or control systems that make systems more green. This was one of the most popular keynotes I led over the past two years and now I’ve put it in a webinar – that is sponsored by Samsung. But, it will not be product oriented – it will be technology and systems oriented – and will talk about more than displays; addressing switching, control, source options and the profitability of GreenAV as well as the impact of BIM on GreenAV systems.
Please join me on Tuesday, January 31, 2017 and register here: http://www.almoproav.com/education/list/webinars

Episode 558: The Prysm Visual Workspace Is on the Edge of the Future
I had a chance to catch up with Prysm’s CMO, Paige O’Neill, and get an update on how their transformation from just being a display company to becoming a collaboration company, through their Prysm Visual Workspace SaaS initiative. AV integrators are used to selling hardware and I wondered how it was going as Prysm is a software-intensive product that not only provides recurring revenue from selling seat-licenses (user licenses) but also from enabling collaboration from remote users via mobile devices and laptops. It’s been about a year since this initiative was launched and O’Neill explains how it works and how it’s been received by the AV community.
Prysm will also be at ISE and I have been told we will get a chance to have an exclusive videocast with her next week to talk about their ISE launches that will happen in Hall 11 booth B130 (the UCC Pavilion). O’Neill is also teaching two session in the free educational theater inside the UCC Pavilion at ISE on 8 February at 10:00 hrs and 9 February at 14:00 hrs – no registration is required!

Episode 557: The World’s Largest Digital Signage Show Is in March in Vegas
The digital signage market in the US-alone is already bigger than the entire Education AV market worldwide. And, it’s growing faster than any other segment of the AV market. Yes, AV only touches about 22% of the digital signage installs. Why? And, why not?
Well, I believe it’s mostly due to a lack of understanding and it’s not the same-old AV market of days gone by – it’s network-centric. So, now you have two reasons to go to the Digital Signage Expo in Las Vegas 28-30 March 2017. Today Andrea Varrone show director at DSE, talked to Gary about what else you can see – in addition to the exhibitors at DSE, when you come – including how to get a free pass and attend an install-tour.
So, enjoy today’s podcast and then sign up to attend: Link for DSE Registration here.

Episode 552: ISE Special Podcast: Nureva’s ISE 2017 Plans
I caught up with Nureva co-founder Nancy Knowlton this morning and we talked about their ISE 2017 plans. At InfoComm last year, they debuted a new audio product, the HDL300, which is now making its European debut. We also talk about the various configurations of their award-winning SPAN system, as well as the SPAN software options that will be on their stand at ISE in Hall 13 Stand E70. Nureva’s Span visual collaboration system creates a cloud-based canvas that can be accessed as easily on your walls as from the device in your hand. It’s true collaboration as everyone in a meeting – local or connected – has access to join, participate, add to and share anything with everyone. In addition to looking for more EMEA distributors and integrators, they will be demo’ing all versions of the SPAN system as well as the HDL300 audio system.

Episode 4: Stressing About Stress
In this week’s episode of Coffee with Millennial-Z, catch Christa Bender with Pivot Communications and Khalil Pillai with Shac, Student Housing and Collective, as they talk about how polo, sticky notes and a good personal reality check relieve their work stresses.
With our Pro, Christa Bender, juggling her 9-5, being on countless AV committees, and staying involved of the rAVe podcast/blogger crew, she tells us even though sleep might be optional at times, you must take new career experiences by the horns and become great at what you do. There are worse things in the world to stress about.
Our Millennial, Khalil Pillai, agrees and puts an emphasis on also being able to balance personal life. With his 9-5-crossfit-polo-Shac-combo balancing act, he assures us “it is possible.” Stress is a big part of Millennials’ lives, which is why Khalil and Diana have created Shac. It is a stress reliever for students who are not only commuters finding living arrangements closer to school but need to be brought together with others in the community to accomplish common goals.
24 hours might not be enough time in the day anymore in today’s work grind, but it is important during these moments of stress to manage your to-do’s with what you need to do vs. what you want to do. With Millennials being the most stressed out generation, we must question “Is this the cause of a new expectation in the work place?” Tune in as these well-rounded individuals explain how stress is inevitable, but your mentality goes a long way.
CwMZ’s Pro tip from Christa Bender: “Do your own path; take the road less traveled. Nothing can hold you back except yourself. You just have to figure out how you’re going to get there.”
Catch these nice folks online.

For all you REGULAR listeners of rAVe Radio out there, hopefully you enjoyed another opinion-packed issue!
For those of you NEW to rAVe, you just read how we are – we are 100 percent opinionated. We not only report the news and new product stories of the ProAV and HomeAV industries, but we stuff the articles full of our opinions. That may include (but is not limited to) whether or not the product is even worth looking at, challenging the manufacturers on their specifications, calling a marketing-spec bluff and suggesting ways integrators market their products better. But, one thing is for sure, we are NOT a trade publication that gets paid for running editorial or product stories. Traditional trade publications get paid to run product stories – that’s why you see what you see in most of the pubs out there. We are different: we run what we want to run and NO ONE is going to pay us to write or say anything good (or bad).
To send me feedback, don’t reply to this newsletter. Instead, write directly to me at gary@ravepubs.com or for editorial ideas, Editor-in-Chief Sara Abrons at sara@ravepubs.com.
A little about me: I graduated from Journalism School at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (where I am adjunct faculty). I’ve been in the AV industry since 1987 where I started with Extron and eventually moved to AMX. So, I guess I am an industry veteran (although I don’t think I am that old). I have been an opinionated columnist for a number of industry publications and in the late 1990s I started the widely read KNews eNewsletter (the first in the AV market) and also created the model for and was co-founder of AV Avenue, which is now known as InfoComm IQ. rAVe [Publications] has been around since 2003, when we launched our original newsletter, rAVe ProAV Edition.
Everything we publish is Opt-in – we spam NO ONE! rAVe ProAV Edition is our flagship ePublication with what we believe is a reach of virtually everyone in the ProAV market. rAVe HomeAV Edition, co-published with CEDIA and launched in June 2004, is, by far, the largest ePub in the HomeAV market. We added rAVe Rental [and Staging] in December 2007, rAVe ED [Education] in May 2008 and then rAVe DS [Digital Signage] in June 2009. We added rAVe GHGav [Green, Healthcare & Government AV] in August 2010 and rAVe HOW [House of Worship] in August 2012. rAVe Radio, our podcasts, were launched in 2012. You can subscribe to any of those publication or see ALL our archives by going to: https://www.ravepubs.com
