Episode 28: Contribute. Support. Lead. It’s The Only Way |
When we talk about leadership, those many consider to be the leaders are the ones who contribute closely alongside others and choose to lead by example. Many prefer to support those who contribute and work hard to evoke change in positive ways. Challenges tend to present themselves as a given, however the way that we work together to meet these challenges head on and ultimately succeed is what we set out to accomplish on every level. For an industry looking to move and grow forward, it must be done through contribution, support and leadership. It is the only way – and a little humor gets us through as well.
In Caddyshack, Chevy Chase said "Be the Ball." Here on AV Power Up we say “Be the Industry.”
Join Host AV Christa Bender and the Crew Corey "CB" Moss, Hope "BeerAndPie (aka The Programmer)" Roth, Stacy Kringlen, Johnny "Stuff n’ Things" Mota and Rich "Hot Jobs" Prevete as they welcome their guests:
- Cory Schaeffer with QSC Systems
- Jonathan Brawn with Brawn Consulting

Episode 27: Hey, Get With the Program! |
OK, let’s get serious for a second. The audio visual industry has for some time faced the need for quality programmers. We know that there are very good ones that currently exist in the industry and while that’s all great, there is still room for improvement. The solutions themselves are still top notch and the certifications speak volumes, however bringing more top flight individuals to the industry in programming, as well as project management and more, has reached a somewhat critical point. We know there are people out there who can get this job done and we’re going to reveal in this show what we’re talking about – or at least what we Hope to get across…
Join Host Christa (@AVChrista) Bender and the Crew – Corey (@Cbmoss) Moss, Chuck (@madsoundguy) Espinoza, Hope (@BeerAndPie) Roth, Johnny (@JMOTA3) Mota, and Rich (@HotJobsRich) Prevete as they welcome:
- Chris Tatton with HB Communications
- Billy Silar with Visual Sound
- Jeremy Caldera with ZDI Inc. (calling from a train somewhere in Chicago)

Episode 26: We’re Getting Schooled, and Bringing it to You |
Have you ever been in a situation where the integration company, after you’ve awarded the job (and expected the A team), sends in the C team without tool kits (don’t tell Chuck), their own ladder, enough wiremold, and maybe even the wrong mounts? Have you ever been the integration company who was awarded the job and sent that non-A team in to do the job and the customer, like the one who is on this show, has a little something to say about it? Well, tune in and you will hear what one of those end users has to say about that, and – this is fair warning – you are about to get "schooled."
Join Host Christa (@AVChrista) Bender and the Crew – Corey (@Cbmoss) Moss, Chuck (@madsoundguy) Espinoza, Hope (@BeerAndPie) Roth, Johnny (@JMOTA3) Mota, and Rich (@HotJobsRich) Prevete as they welcome:
- Greg Brown (@AVGreg) with the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA)
- Michael Shinn (@axpmike) with IMS Technology

Episode 25: Rocked by Pirates and Canadians |
So a concert took place in northern Virginia this past weekend and while it might not have been Van Halen, it may have been the next best thing (actually these days, your brother’s garage band may be the next best thing). Dressed like buccaneers, these guys rock the house with great music you can dance the night away to – here’s one of them. Mike Loss, guitars and vocals for the Drunk Naked Pirates is one of our guests on this show and if you don’t already know, the creator of the AV Power Up theme song. He’s also an IT guy as well as, of course, the owner of the best guitars and longest hair on the podcast.
Jason Perry, lead vocals and guitar sings great songs from the 80’s and 90’s that you all know and if you’re not inspired by this guy’s rendition of Billie Jean to get up and boogie, well you’ve just got no pulse. He’s a professional lover of trees by day – and a Canadian! Claim to fame is his goatee, yet another story.
Also joining us on this special podcast is one of our best AV friends from the north Matt Scott who as usual brings the most well-known hair in the industry, as well as the knowledge base. And he found a fellow Canadian on this podcast! Not that he’d ever admit it otherwise (worst Canadian y’know).
We talk DNP, music, AV and other assorted things (non-Johnny). Oh yeah, Christa (@AVChrista) and Corey (@Cbmoss) steered this ship alone while Chuck (@madsoundguy) Espinoza and the Drunk Naked Pirates’ personal favorite sound guy – who was there in spirit(s) – and the rest of the Crew had the week off. They’re all of course back again next week.
So wear an eyepatch, give an arrggghh for a real good one and… |

Episode 5: Wi-Fi and IT for Live Events: What You Need to Know |
If you are a live events professional, you know how mission critical the Wi-Fi and bandwidth can be for the success of an event. We will all recall the awkward event moment when Steve Jobs had to ask the room to turn of their devices because it was killing the bandwidth — and many of us have had similar experiences, even if on a smaller scale. So, if you produce, stage, manage, plan or otherwise serve the live events industry, youmust have a working knowledge of bandwidth and Wi-Fi in order to best serve your clients. Luckily for us, experts such as Ashton Burnette, business development manager for TOURTech are here to provide useful advice and guidance. With her experience serving clients like Lollapalooza and Amazon, she is an excellent resource and our GoodAV guest this month! |

Episode 441: CORE Brands Has the Biggest Booth at CEDIA 2015! |
Obviously, I had to talk to the holder of the biggest booth at CEDIA, CORE Brands – they’re spending more money than anyone else. So, Joe Lautner, CORE’s Director of Control, joined me to explain their strategy and where they are in the market now. They’ve made a lot of acquisitions over the past 5-years and they’re now focused on making it easier for dealers to use all their products. Listen to this podcast to understand how. |

Episode 440: AMX’s Presence at CEDIA was Small, But Their Launch was Impressive |
AMX literally was only represented by a table inside the HARMAN booth and I suspect many, many integrators missed them. Too bad as they demo’d the makings of a totally-new control system interface – and it is impressive. I asked Adam Gershon, AMX’s Residential Product Manager, to join me on a podcast to explain the strategy behind the re-design. |

Episode 438: RTI’s Brett Stokke Sees RTI as Perfectly Position in the Middle |
The control system market has changed a ton over the past 10-years. A segment of the market that was once dominated by just two big players – Crestron and AMX – is now over-crowded. And, new players Apple, Google, Amazon and others are flooding the entry-level of the market and solidly stealing the DIY’ers. And, when I stopped by RTI’s booth and spoke to their Director of Communications, Brett Stokke, he explained why he saw their position in the market – right in between the Crestron’s and the Apple’s of the world in the space that integrators love configurable control systems and don’t want highly programmable systems but the consumers who want an upgrade to having multiple control apps to make stuff in their home work. Listen to Gary’s podcast LIVE from the show floor with Brett. |

Episode 433: Everyone Going to CEDIA Should See RoseWater Energy Group |
For years, the one big complaint I have consistently heard from at CEDIA from CE ’s and Integrators is the lack of margins in selling and installing residential AV gear now.
Well, a company called RoseWater Energy Group may be the solution to all those complaints as they demo their Energy Management Hub and Energy Storage Hub at CEDIA Expo next week in Dallas. RoseWater CEO, Joe Picirrilli, joined Gary on his podcast today to talk about how energy management storage and generation are the future of Residential AV and a segment of the market every integrator should seriously take a look at. They’ll be exhibiting at booth 7229 and, once you listen to this podcast, you’ll undertone why they should be on your booth map. |

They’ll even show you how you can re-imagine the home office — another revenue opportunity for selling high-end AV into the home. Want to know more? And, do you want to know how to get into their theater at CEDIA? Well then, listen to Gary’s interview with the head of Barco Residential Tim Sinnaeve. |

| For all you REGULAR listeners of rAVe Radio out there, hopefully you enjoyed another opinion-packed issue! For those of you NEW to rAVe, you just read how we are – we are 100 percent opinionated. We not only report the news and new product stories of the ProAV and HomeAV industries, but we stuff the articles full of our opinions. That may include (but is not limited to) whether or not the product is even worth looking at, challenging the manufacturers on their specifications, calling a marketing-spec bluff and suggesting ways integrators market their products better. But, one thing is for sure, we are NOT a trade publication that gets paid for running editorial or product stories. Traditional trade publications get paid to run product stories – that’s why you see what you see in most of the pubs out there. We are different: we run what we want to run and NO ONE is going to pay us to write or say anything good (or bad). To send me feedback, don’t reply to this newsletter. Instead, write directly to me at gary@ravepubs.com or for editorial ideas, Editor-in-Chief Sara Abrons at sara@ravepubs.com. A little about me: I graduated from Journalism School at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (where I am adjunct faculty). I’ve been in the AV industry since 1987 where I started with Extron and eventually moved to AMX. So, I guess I am an industry veteran (although I don’t think I am that old). I have been an opinionated columnist for a number of industry publications and in the late 1990s I started the widely read KNews eNewsletter (the first in the AV market) and also created the model for and was co-founder of AV Avenue, which is now known as InfoComm IQ. rAVe [Publications] has been around since 2003, when we launched our original newsletter, rAVe ProAV Edition. Everything we publish is Opt-in – we spam NO ONE! rAVe ProAV Edition is our flagship ePublication with what we believe is a reach of virtually everyone in the ProAV market. rAVe HomeAV Edition, co-published with CEDIA and launched in June 2004, is, by far, the largest ePub in the HomeAV market. We added rAVe Rental [and Staging] in December 2007, rAVe ED [Education] in May 2008 and then rAVe DS [Digital Signage] in June 2009. We added rAVe GHGav [Green, Healthcare & Government AV] in August 2010 and rAVe HOW [House of Worship] in August 2012. rAVe Radio, our podcasts, were launched in 2012.
