AVIXA Names 2018 Michael Vergauwen Scholarship Winners
The AVIXA Foundation a non-profit charitable and educational organization created by AVIXA to support the audiovisual industry, has announced the recipients of the 2018 Michael Vergauwen Scholarship: Marc Carbon, Matthew Hancock and Rishabh Waghela.
The scholarship program was created to honor the late Michael Vergauwen’s contributions to the AV industry by supporting educational opportunities for students engaged in AV-oriented college programs. Each scholarship recipient receives $5,000.
Scholarship winner Marc Carbon is a senior at Goethe-Universitt Frankfurt pursuing a bachelor’s degree in economics with a focus on management and marketing. A fascination with innovative technology led Carbon to a position as a science teacher. He later worked for his mother’s digital media consulting firm, and recently spent six weeks interning with Prowise, which creates software and hardware education solutions. His interest in AV developed from his father’s role with the Global Presence Alliance. Carbon plans to pursue various training opportunities, such as CTS certification, to help spur his career as an AV professional.
Matthew Hancock is currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in computer information systems at the College of Charleston. After high school, Hancock joined the United States Army as a satellite communications systems operator and worked his way into an elite Special Operations unit, where he first learned about videoconferencing systems, networking, and network security. He currently works at Cambridge International Systems designing, engineering, and implementing AV systems in government buildings. He enrolled in the computer information systems program to learn the skills to program AV solutions. Hancock recently earned his CTS and plans to pursue his CTS-D in the future.
Rishabh Waghela is enrolled in the engineering management master’s program at Northeastern University in Boston. After earning a bachelor’s degree in electrical and electronics engineering from Vidyalankar Institute of Technology in Mumbai, Waghela worked as an AV engineer at Crestron Electronics Asia, where he cultivated his skills and identified concepts he wanted to pursue further. The program at Northeastern University provides the opportunity to develop the technical expertise needed to manage small-to-large-scale projects and the business competence that is required in the AV industry. Waghela also works part-time as an AV technician-in-training at the university.

AVIXA Research Study Indicates Retail Is Thriving, Presenting ProAV Opportunities
Contrary to popular belief, retail is healthy, reaching approximately $5.1 trillion in revenue in 2017 and growing 4 percent annually for the past eight years, according to the U.S. Census, the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and the National Retail Federation. With less than 10 percent of revenue captured online, brick-and-mortar stores still present an industry rich with opportunities for pro-AV providers. According to AVIXA’s Industry Outlook and Trends Analysis (IOTA), retail is expected to generate $19.6 billion in pro-AV solution revenue globally in 2018. AVIXA’s new 2018 Market Opportunity Analysis Report (MOAR) covering retail investigates the opportunities and challenges for providers of pro-AV solutions and technologies.
MOAR: Retail marks the first in a series of vertical market studies, conducted throughout 2018, with forthcoming reports on corporate, sports venue, hospitality, education, and transportation. Consistent with AVIXA’s focus on exceptional experiences created by integrated AV solutions, AVIXA has employed a design-thinking approach to understanding the markets.
MOAR starts by attempting to understand consumers on their journey through the retail experience. The report then focuses on the clients of AV solutions — often referred to as end users — including the influencers and decision-makers involved in pro-AV systems integration projects. For the retail vertical, this includes those who are responsible for the consumer experience and/or the audiovisual technologies deployed in stores. Finally, the study provides a view from pro-AV integrators on their successes and challenges working in retail.
The 2018 MOAR: Retail offers rich insight into the retail market. Highlights include:
- Looking to stay competitive against the rise of e-commerce, brick-and-mortar retailers are evolving into more experiential locations with AV as a strong component. Survey results show large capital improvement plans among retailers in support of this trend, generating about $6 billion in projected AV related spending in North America alone.
- Surprisingly, only about half of AV providers are currently active in retail. Reasons vary, but lack of knowledge about the space plays a key role. Retailers say they often will work with more traditional IT firms, general contractors, or architects instead. This may keep some AV providers out of the mix, noting they are less familiar with the category and unsure how to break into the market.
- The majority of retailers surveyed are planning to integrate mature technology, such as audio equipment and video displays. The same is true of the bundling of technologies into solutions such as security, point of sale, and digital signage. Retailers are not yet investing in newer technologies like augmented or virtual reality, although the interest is there.
- Both end users and providers of AV solutions agree the two biggest challenges faced by retailers are technology selection and adherence to budget. Retailers rely on AV providers’ knowledge of the various options to help them determine how to efficiently and effectively create exceptional consumer experiences.
“As shown in this report, a large portion of AV providers are not playing in the retail space. And with a thriving industry, they’re doing themselves a disservice,” said Sean Wargo, senior director of market intelligence, AVIXA. “This is leading retailers to rely on service providers that don’t necessarily have AV expertise to deliver experiential retail environments. This report will outline the opportunities retail presents for pro-AV providers and offer thoughts on successfully breaking into the market.”
The 2018 Market Opportunity Analysis Report, is available for purchase here. AVIXA members are eligible for discounts.

NEUTRIK Introduces New Dante I/O Interface
The new NEUTRIK intelligent NA2-IO-DLINE Interface enables integration of analog signal devices within a Dante AoIP network in just a few easy steps.
This new end-of-network device offers two analog inputs and two outputs, enabling it to simultaneously integrate two analog audio channels within a Dante network or output a Dante stream as two analog channels. “The ability to feed and transmit signals at the same time eliminates the need for investment in new devices,” says Frick.
Converting two analogue line signals to a Dante stream and a Dante stream to two analog line signals, simultaneously, enables the NA2-IO-DLINE to feed analog signals to a Dante network, while receiving a mix from another Dante source and feeding it to non-Dante ready amplifiers, self-powered speaker systems, signal processors, mixing consoles, etc.
The unit requires a Power over Ethernet switch or a PoE injector (802.3 af/at; class 1) and is AES67 compliant, which enables it to be used more extensively with other AES67 compliant AoIP networks.
The NA2-IO-DLINE is optimized for use in extreme environments and applications, offering the usual NEUTRIK standards of robust construction and protection. The unit comes ‘wrapped’ in a highly protective rubber casing for stand-alone deployment; this can be removed, allowing it to be used with optional mounting brackets or a rack panel, enabling it to be mounted below tables, in floor boxes or in equipment racks for fixed installation applications. In addition, the unit is equipped with lockable etherCON connections for audio and network I/O.

Barco XDL Laser Projector Now Carries a 75K-Lumen Spec
Barco is launching a new range of laser projectors dubbed the XDL. Designed specifically for very large venues and events, the XDL is spec’d to be Rec. 2020 color, uses a native (4096×2160) 4K resolution 3-chip DLP system and can handle content up to 120Hz. The XDL will be launched to coincide with InfoComm 2018.
The XDL series also carries the brightest lumen spec ever, up to 75,000 lumens. Barco also says the XDL speeds up the installation process by reducing cable hassle and alignment time because the projectors provide a lens shift of up to 100 percent. And, images can be matched to the projection surface with the on-board real-time warping and blending feature.
Companies that already own Barco XLD+ lenses will be able to reuse them on the XDL projectors. InFocus Doubles-Down on Wireless Presentation Systems with Button-Based SimpleShare
InFocus Corporation has been in the wireless presentation market nearly as long as Barco (the inventor of the market-leading ClickShare), although InFocus’ marketshare in that market hasn’t been significant. But now InFocus is back with a new button-based system called SimpleShare — a point-to-point presentation solution for wireless connectivity and sharing of videos, presentation, documents, data and more. SimpleShare is device-agnostic and allows users to share high-definition video and sound wirelessly to any display with an HDMI input. SimpleShare allows for a plug-and-play installation with no software, downloads, or network management required, making it incredibly user-friendly for anyone to implement without burdening the IT department. Users can also switch between up to 254 presenters with the click of a button.
Available in three bundled solutions, there is a SimpleShare package for every application. The base model SimpleShare (INA-SIMS1) includes one transmitter and receiver perfect for a small meeting room; SimpleShare Presentation System (INA-SIMPS1) is a complete conference room solution with three transmitters and a charging station; SimpleShare Touch Presentation System (INA-SIMINT1) supports up to three presenters with wireless touch control from a touch display panel, and allows users to annotate on anything they present from their source device, as well as draw and write on a built-in digital whiteboard.
The SimpleShare platform was designed with information security top of mind. SimpleShare utilizes WPA2, the most secure encryption method available, developed by the Wi-Fi Alliance. Servicing a radius of 15 meters from the receiver, the AES-CCMP algorithm used is a cipher key encryption with variable key size and changes at varying intervals, preventing any possibility of leaked data or hacking.
Here are all the specs for the $899 SimpleShare.

Vivitek Launches Novo Wireless Presentation System
Vivitek has launched a new Novo Wireless Presentation System aimed at small to medium-sized business like cafes, beauty salons, garages, small retailers and even office reception areas. Vivitek’s new NovoDSmini digital signage solution can be connected to any display device with HDMI. Like Vivitek’s existing NovoDS solutions, the NovoDSmini benefits from NovoDS Studio, the simple to use playlist editing and device management software. Users do not need any programming skills to create digital signage to capture their customers’ attention in any environment. The NovoDSmini can play content ranging from text, audio, photos, videos, webpages, YouTube, Twitter and weather updates. The 36 pre-arranged templates allow users to easily create information about an SME’s services or offers.
NovoDS Studio software helps to effortlessly create digital signage. Its multi-page-playlist editing and scheduling flexibility — by hour, day, week or month — means SMEs can use the product to deliver relevant messages over their chosen time-frame, without having to frequently update content manually. For instance, a cafeteria can program the NovoDSmini to display the breakfast options from 6 a.m. to 11 a.m., the lunch options from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m., followed by dinner specials from 5 p.m. on. This dynamic content creates far more impact on audiences than just showing and repeating one playlist. Furthermore, images are displayed in Full-HD 1080p, NovoDSmini ensures that the content displayed is eye-catching, even in smaller areas.
For shop owners with multiple digital signage screens to manage, NovoDSmini also provides a centralized device management function to enable users to control all of the NovoDS devices on the network. This ensures that SMEs are kept productive and focused on their task at hand, rather than spending time on managing digital signage devices. Users can monitor the device or devices’ status easily and they can update all the devices’ content at once, or separate them into groups and assign different schedules per group, according to the content, venue and the time it is due to be displayed. Users also have the option to synchronize content over selected devices, to create a stunning effect across multiple signage displays.
The U.S. launch will happen at InfoComm but today was all about EMEA. The NovoDSmini is £229 ex VAT and here are the stats.

The latest release features built-in PTZ (Pan, Tilt, Zoom) control for robotic cameras in Wirecast Pro, support for the X-Keys Wirecast Control Surface, paired encoding contribution with Facebook Live and more.
Paired encoding to Facebook Live allows videographers and freelancers to more easily target and stream content to Facebook pages for clients, customers, and their brands without requiring admin passwords or credentials for the main Facebook account. The latest members of the SYSTEM-500 family fuse classic designs with versatile modern features. The SYSTEM-500 series offers a selection of Eurorack-format modules that users can mix and match in any combination to create the Roland modular synthesizer. Each module is analog and designed for maximum compatibility with contemporary synthesizer and effects modules.
The SYS-510 Synth brings the original’s best aspects together in an expanded single-voice module. With ring modulation, sample-and-hold with seven waveforms and internal LPF, pink and white noise modes, LFO with internal ENV and VCA, and two CV-controlled portamento circuits, the SYS-555 offers a near-infinite range of tonal shaping and modulation options.

For all you REGULAR readers of rAVe ProAV Edition out there, hopefully you enjoyed another opinion-packed issue!
For those of you NEW to rAVe, you just read how we are — we are 100 percent opinionated. We not only report the news and new product stories of the ProAV industry, but we stuff the articles full of our opinions. That may include (but is not limited to) whether or not the product is even worth looking at, challenging the manufacturers on their specifications, calling a marketing-spec bluff and suggesting ways integrators market their products better. Traditional trade publications get paid to run product stories — that’s why you see what you see in most of the pubs out there.
