Amazon’s New B2B Service Includes ProAV
By Gary Kayye rAVe Founder
At least five MAJOR ProAV manufacturers have relented to Amazon’s push into the ProAV market. In case you haven’t heard, Amazon quietly launched a business-to-business initiative earlier this year called — appropriately — Amazon Business. Its charter is to become a multi-billion-dollar supplier of anything a business needs to operate. And, Viewsonic was one of the first projector manufacturers to jump at the opportunity — offering Amazon Business customers a $300 SVGA box as well as its $500 3500 ANSI lumen 1080p and $700 show throw WXGA units.
I guess they figured that the ProAV channel doesn’t want to sell them, so why not let Amazon?
But, a week or so ago, ViewSonic’s $1,700 5200-lumen projector appeared there too. Hmm.
So, what now?
Differentiate. Services.
The Internet changes our business models forever. Amazon will do it again. Amazon is more powerful than the Internet. yes, I said that.
Amazon is, well, Amazon.
But, they don’t do services well. We do. Look, the industry is moving towards giving products away — we all know that. But, the integration is what we are all about. Think about it, when something goes wrong with your Internet, even though we all hate calling the cable company, at least we know who’s responsible. When you integrate the stuff, as you well know, you are doing more than build a system. You’re building a relationship. You’re becoming that single-point-of-contact. You’re the simplifier.
So, don’t panic. But, that said, I sure as hell wouldn’t support brands that are flooding Amazon with products!
Shame on you Viewsonic. Leave a Comment

InfoComm International Changes Name to AVIXAIn a surprise announcement today, InfoComm International (the organization) changed its name to the Audiovisual and Integrated Experience Association (AVIXA). For now, InfoComm the trade show will keep its name (both the trade show in the U.S. every June, as well as the international versions such as InfoComm China). They will just be operated by AVIXA instead of InfoComm International.
In the past year, we’ve heard — well, the organization formerly known as InfoComm International talk a lot about the technology experience, or integrated experience, which we’ve heard at shows and in marketing materials. It turns out this was laying the groundwork for a complete rebrand of the organization.
The rebrand evolved out of the strategic plan that the InfoComm board and executive team has been working on for the past two years. At a press event today, David Labuskes, executive and CEO of InfoComm International/AVIXA, said the team did not come to the decision to rebrand lightly. He said, “You shouldn’t change your name. If you can do anything else, you shouldn’t change your name… But [after much thought and discussion], none of the other options worked or were authentic.” He also said, “It’s about the survival of our current members. We evolve or we die.”
AVIXA wants to expand its membership, and based on what we heard today, much of this growth will be through end users, with the goal of enticing content creators and so-called experience directors to the organization. An example of an “experience director” might be someone at a Fortune 500 company who decides what level of collaboration technology she wants her team to use, or an advertising executive who utilizes creative technology in campaigns. AVIXA says it will be changing, or expanding, its membership structure as well, which will include individual memberships that in some cases will have no charge.
AVIXA also said it decided to announce the change now, rather than at the InfoComm show in June, because they didn’t want the announcement to overshadow or in any way take away from the announcements the exhibitors were themselves making.
There will be much more information to come on this big change in the days and weeks to come. Please leave your thoughts in the comments — we want to know what you think. The full statement from AVIXA is below.
InfoComm International has changed its name to the Audiovisual and Integrated Experience Association (AVIXA). The change reflects AVIXA’s broadening mission to be an industry hub, while also acting as a catalyst for market growth beyond what has been considered traditionally as professional AV.
AVIXA’s trade shows worldwide, including the North America show, June 2-8 in Las Vegas, will continue to operate under the InfoComm name.
“This is an exciting time for our industry and for the advancement of audiovisual solutions across a wide range of customer experiences,” said David Labuskes, CTS, CAE, RCDD, Executive Director and CEO of AVIXA. “Thanks to the innovative, creative efforts of so many members, partners, and their customers, we have collectively grown far beyond what InfoComm International could do to promote AV around the world. AV experiences have become so ubiquitous, and they’ve come to include so many more technologies, and touch so many more personal and professional lives, that we felt compelled to embrace a new identity that more accurately reflects this industry’s excitement and welcomes a far more diverse community of professionals.”
In recent years, AVIXA’s members have evolved to offer much more than audiovisual products and systems. Their innovation and attention to customer requirements has led to an industry of solution providers that use audiovisual technology to create outcomes. AVIXA membership has grown to include experiential designers, content creators, IT companies, and users of AV solutions across a growing cross section of markets. AVIXA’s 2017 InfoComm show in Orlando last June attracted a greater share of AV customers than in any other year.
By adopting the name AVIXA, the industry association, which operates as a trade organization representing companies and a professional society representing individuals, aims to reflect both what its members do (AV) and what they create for customers, which are integrated experiences (IX).
“The AVIXA Board of Directors has set out an ambitious plan to grow the association, increase awareness of AV experiences, and reinvent our brand in order to propel this industry into the future,” said Gary Hall, CTS-D, CTS-I, President of the AVIXA Board, and Federal Strategy, Planning and Operations Leader at Cisco Systems. “With new and different people and technologies coming into this space, we are thrilled that AVIXA will be home to all of them.”
AVIXA was founded in 1939 as the National Association of Visual Education Dealers. In 1949, NAVED merged with the Allied Non-Theatrical Film Association to form the National Audio-Visual Association. NAVA changed its name to the International Communications Industries Association in 1983, which became InfoComm International in 2005.
“Organizations evolve,” said Labuskes. “AVIXA’s core programs remains the same—training, certification, standards, community, market intelligence, tradeshows—but the industry has changed in exciting ways, and the opportunity to grow the market for audiovisual experience is so vast, it was important that the AV industry’s leading association change with it.”

Harman Professional Eliminates 650 JobsYesterday, Harman Professional gave notice to approximately 650 people that they were restructuring and they will be laid off over the next year. The positions are in the U.S. and Europe and a Harman spokesperson told rAVe today that the result of the restructuring will include facility closures over the next nine months to a year, including Elkhart, Ind., South Jordan, Utah and a few smaller offices throughout Europe that came to Harman through a number of acquisitions over the last 10 years.
“To be clear, the changes we announced yesterday are the culmination of a transformation that the Professional Solutions division has been undergoing for the last two years to better serve our customers, increase our competitiveness and accelerate new product innovations,” said Harman Director of Public Relations David Glaubke. “We are now consolidating certain locations acquired through acquisitions over the years to leverage the R&D, engineering, design and manufacturing operations of our other divisions and speed up our time to market. We also are investing in a stronger IT infrastructure, supply chain and software-driven NPIs that will improve high-demand product availability and processes and resources for our customers, sales teams and distributors.”
As you may know, Harman Professional was purchased by Samsung last November as part of an $8 Billion acquisition that included all of Harman International — including both the professional and consumer divisions. As we speculated back then and again in March, this purchase was primarily for the Harman automobile technology products and a, potentially, unintentional consequence of the acquisition were some big-time great brands from Harman Professional like AMX, Crown, dbx and AKG.
Harman did follow up and tell us that they are currently redirecting their investments into IT tools and platforms (aimed at helping their sales teams, distributors and reps) and they are investing in Experience Centers in the U.S. and Europe on top of the two that are already in Asia.
Glaubke commented on the likely unrest a layoff this size would garner saying, “I want to emphasize that decisions like this, while necessary, are not easy to make. We have given our employees advance notification of the changes we will make over the next year to assist with the transition and will do our best to mitigate the impact to our employees and their families. Importantly, we also will ensure that the process is completely seamless for our customers.”
We hope that all the 650 Harman Professional employees displaced by their reorganization find homes elsewhere in ProAV quickly as they have some talented people that would serve companies like Extron, Crestron, NEC, Barco, Christie, Epson, Bose, Cisco and Almo well – all of which are hiring!
There is no official press release on this, yet, but here is where you can find Harman Pro. Leave a Comment

Studio Technologies Releases Model 5401 Dante Master ClockStudio Technologies, manufacturer of high-quality audio, video and fiber-optic solutions, has released the Model 5401 Dante Master Clock. The Model 5401 provides precise timing signals for applications that utilize Dante Audio-over-Ethernet media networking technology. The unit implements a high-performance IEEE 1588 precision time protocol (PTP) server, compatible with the requirements of Dante and capable of simultaneously supporting the timing needs of up to hundreds of Dante-compatible devices.
The Model 5401 provides the PTP v1 compatibility required by Dante, as well as supporting PTP v2 for AES67 applications. In addition, the unit generates up to eight sine-wave audio tones on Dante transmit (output) channels, useful during audio network installation, maintenance and operation. A clock input connection allows the Model 5401 to synchronize with a variety of timing reference signals.
The Model 5401 provides excellent master clock performance using its accurate and stable internal oscillator, which is temperature-controlled and exceeds the performance of standard Dante devices by at least an order of magnitude. While its standalone performance is excellent, the Model 5401 can also be “locked” to a variety of external signals for integration into facilities that include a master timing reference. Compatible signals include word clock, video sync and 10 MHz sine-wave.
Word clock, typically 48 kHz, is often used in audio-only facilities and is compatible with the Model 5401’s sync input. Video reference (“sync”) signals are found in broadcast, post-production, and entertainment facilities. The Model 5401 supports the most-common video format/rate combinations including “black burst,” bi- and tri-level HD, and several that are specific for 4K applications. Industrial and commercial facilities often utilize a GPS-disciplined source of 10 MHz as a timing reference. This sine-wave signal is directly compatible with the unit’s sync input.
The Model 5401 is capable of generating eight separate sine-wave tones, each configurable in level and frequency. The tones are digitally-generated in hardware that is separate from that associated with the unit’s PTP functionality. This allows the Model 5401, unlike a general-purpose Dante-enabled device, to perform its timing tasks without risk of interruption due to conflicting resource demands.
Dual Gigabit Ethernet network interfaces allow the Model 5401 to support switched, redundant and split Dante operation. An integral Web server allows simple monitoring and configuration of the unit’s clock, audio tone and general Dante performance. Front-panel indicators, LCD display and pushbutton switches provide personnel with direct access to key operating parameters. The Model 5401 can be powered by AC mains or 12 volt DC. When both are connected, redundant power operation is supported. Its lightweight enclosure mounts in one space (1U) of a standard 19-inch rack.

Altinex Expands Cable Nook Product Line with CNK202Altinex has just introduced the CNK202 Cable Nook Modular Tabletop Interconnect Box, the company’s latest addition to its Cable Nook product line. The CNK202 Cable Nook provides a way of hiding and storing multimedia cables and fixed connectors.
The new CNK202 has no mounting brackets. This feature enables integrators to install the unit from the top of the table. With the new CNK202, there are no longer adjustments to be made on the underside of the table with mounting brackets, enabling integrators to save their lower backs while minimizing the time required to install the new Cable Nook.
The Modular Cable-Nook uses a trapdoor-type, half-moon lid that remains flush with the table when not in use. To access the cables or connectors, users simply lift the lid and pull the ends out, or plug cables into any installed fixed connectors. The lid closes easily, even with several cables in use. After the presentation, the cable ends are returned to the Cable-Nook for safe storage.
Cables feed through the Cable-Nook to the underside of the table, enabling connection to the presentation system. The weight of the cables helps to feed the slack through the unit and the cable ends are kept from falling by a special adjustable retaining bracket. This retaining bracket uses rounded edges to prevent kinking and is adjustable to both height and depth. With the unit’s modular configuration, there is room for numerous connectors. The CNK202 offers 23 slots available for power, grommets, retaining brackets or Altinex CNK-IP Insert Plates. Available plates include ones for power (both domestic and international versions), models for snap-in ports, HDMI video and more.
The $320 CNK202 can accommodate up to six cable retractors using separate retractor mounting brackets. These RT300 Series retractors come in different varieties and can accommodate VGA, HDMI, RJ-45, 3.5 millimeter, USB and USB-C formats. For applications requiring power and USB charging, Altinex offers the CNK-IP-200 UL listed dual power plug with dual USB charging ports. This unit, combined with the mounting plate, provides an ideal combination of connectors for most conference room applications.

B-Tech’s New BT8312 Pop-Out Mount Brings Ultra-Slim Benefits B-Tech AV Mounts’ new ultra-slim BT8312 is designed to make video wall installations as quick and simple as possible. It’s capable of video wall configurations in both landscape and portrait formats.
The ultra-slim profile of the BT8312 makes it a choice for mounting into walls with a narrow recess or when space in front of the wall is at a premium. ADA compliance — American legislation relating to the accessibility of electronic and information technology for people with disabilities, states that wall mounted screens in public places must not protrude more than 100 millimeters from the wall. As screens get thinner, with some sub-50-millimeter deep models now available, the BT8312 is ideal for meeting these regulations.
Being part of the B-Tech family of mounting solutions, the BT8312 also works as a pole mounted solution when used with the System 2 range. Similar to B-Tech’s BT8310 mount, the BT8312’s pop-out system allows quick and easy access to the rear of mounted screens for servicing and tool-less micro-adjustment enables easy and accurate screen alignment. The BT8312 also features wallplate keyhole fixing, with mounting template spacers available to eliminate time-consuming calculations and on-site measuring. B-Tech’s engineers have developed an integrated locking mechanism that prevents accidental screen pop-out, with interface adapter arms included for use with VESA 600×400 displays.

Panamax Adds Local IP Control to BlueBOLT at CEDIA 2017 Panamax today announced the introduction of the BlueBOLT-CV2, a new interface enabling energy management features of Panamax PRO products to be managed from the local network without requiring a cloud connection.
Integrators can monitor their clients’ power as well as set up a number of notifications alerting them of network and or power anomalies. Scheduled events and auto-reboot functions help eliminate manually re-booting the network as well as eliminating most service calls while troubleshooting and resolving the tech issue remotely. This adds value to the residential integrators’ portfolio as well as lowers their labor costs by not requiring a trip to the installation site to manually reboot devices, such as control systems, set-top box/DVRs, media servers and network devices.
The BlueBOLT-CV2 is designed to deliver locally controlled BlueBOLT functionality to the Panamax M4315-PRO, M4320-PRO and MB1500. Cloud connection is only needed for set up, after which all control can be managed from the embedded web pages.

For all you REGULAR readers of rAVe ProAV Edition out there, hopefully you enjoyed another opinion-packed issue!
For those of you NEW to rAVe, you just read how we are — we are 100 percent opinionated. We not only report the news and new product stories of the ProAV industry, but we stuff the articles full of our opinions. That may include (but is not limited to) whether or not the product is even worth looking at, challenging the manufacturers on their specifications, calling a marketing-spec bluff and suggesting ways integrators market their products better. But, one thing is for sure, we are NOT a trade publication that gets paid for running editorial or product stories. Traditional trade publications get paid to run product stories — that’s why you see what you see in most of the pubs out there. We are different: We run what we want to run and NO ONE is going to pay us to write anything good (or bad).
