Remote Cubed: A Remote Chance of Remote Support for Remote Events
By Joel Rollins rAVe Columnist
Over the last few years, a revolution in teamwork and technical support has taken place in the installation portion of our industry. Once network ports began appearing on the equipment that we sold, remote administration, remote monitoring and remote support all became possible, but it really has taken a couple of years to convince clients that it should be done, and to educate both our clients and our personnel on both the techniques and software used, and the security issues that surround it. Then, it has taken time to think of creative and productive ways to use it, beyond the obvious “I can log into that piece of equipment and tell you why it’s broken” use. We have begun to use it (the network and network collaboration software) for sales calls, for ongoing project meetings, and to make our experts available in more places at more times, creating much greater staff flexibility especially with specialist technicians and designers.
Why did it take so long? Simple. Because our industry, for many years, tried to see videoconferencing as the answer to this. Being a major implementer of videoconferencing technology, I have often asked myself why we didn’t use it more within our industry, as I have always been a strong believer in drinking our own Kool-Aid. But videoconferencing, especially the kind that required large boxes with complex installation, just didn’t fit the bill for many parts of our industry — mostly because, for internal meetings, I really have no need to see my team members at the other end. Not only do I know what they look like, but if you knew my staff you would know that it would be a pleasant break not to look at some of them. (Kidding, guys… please continue to come to work despite my attempts at humor).
No, what I needed was to look at the project or problem at hand. And what came along to solve the issue were cloud-based solutions for collaboration and the VMR (or virtual meeting rooms).
Just as background, the two tools that we use most often over the last couple of years are our internal project management system, which is an incredible product from 37 Signals called Basecamp. I have talked about Basecamp in a couple of previous columns, so I won’t belabor it here, but it is the online system, cloud-based, in which we maintain all of our project files, schedules, notes and an online/offline thread about each project. One of the best parts about the system is that we can include clients in their projects, without allowing them access to anyone else’s projects, even though our staff can see them all. This is really useful in that it prevents time wasting calls and emails inquiring about progress on particular projects, as (if we choose to) they can see all of the daily notes from the technicians and managers assigned to their projects.
The other product that has come on fast in our organization, which we use both among ourselves and with clients, is Cisco’s WebEx. It allows us to hold convenient meetings between staff that’s at the office using a traditional videoconferencing room, staff that’s in the field on a laptop or tablet, and clients, wherever they happen to be. It allows us to take over each other’s computers for technical support or to provide hands-on assistance with specialized programming. And once we have clients using it, it saves us enormous amounts of time in attending their meetings in a VMR rather than in person.
(Please note that there are great alternatives, many of them, to these two systems. I comment on them only because they are the systems that we have been using the longest. The important thing about both of them, for what I am about to suggest, is that they are both cloud-based, use only a web browser, and are easily accessible from public networks.)
So that is what has happened among those of us who design and install systems. Over the last few years, remote collaboration has finally taken our industry by storm, which is finally justified the fact that we have been pushing on our clients for years now.
But stagers, well… we fly places. We get up early, we go to the airport, we drink too much coffee, we go straight to worksite, we wait for rooms to be available, we wait for crews, we wait for freight. Then we do a show, go to the airport and fly on to the next location.
Then we repeat the process. Because staging is not just a profession. It’s a way of life.
But in a world where qualified personnel become more and more expensive, and yet harder and harder to find, where travel is no longer considered a perk, and where clients’ attitudes about travel are changing, it only makes sense that the rental and staging portion of our industry will find it a financial necessity to begin using these technologies more readily than we have in the past.
Think about it, because next month we are going to examine a show and how the use of remote technology can change it. Because with the application of a little ingenuity, you can decrease your travel cost, and yet increase your billing for the things that you do off-site already but don’t normally get to bill for. I’m going to explore for ideas of my own, and a couple that have already been contributed by the stagers that I talked to about this article. So stay tuned. Leave a Comment

Savant Unveils Awesome Savant Remote
By Gary Kayye rAVe Founder
Savant today unveiled the Savant Remote. It is, by far, the coolest (and easiest to program) handheld remote we have ever seen. No joke. At this time, it’s aimed exclusively at home entertainment as it only controls that part of your house (i.e. TV, all the stuff connected to your TV, whole house audio systems, smart lighting systems, etc) but, they made it clear to me that they were going to upgrade it (think: iPhone-like updates) that make it work with HVAC, security systems and more over the coming year.
And, we got a bit of inside information: They will be launching a commercial AV one, too. So, that’s why we’re posting this story in the ProAV and HomeAV newsletters and on our website everywhere.
It’s like a universal remote with some home automation. The built-in (no need to self-configure) parts of the Savant Remote includes all TV’s, Sonos, Apple TV, all cable boxes, Roku, Philips lights and a over 380,000 of today’s most popular entertainment devices, but everything else can be programmed (very, very easily) by the homeowner.
The Savant Remote is part of Savant’s new family of wireless devices, which also includes the Savant Host, Blaster, and Lamp Controller — all designed by the famous design studio Ammunition, led by industrial designer Robert Brunner. That’s why it looks so good – it literally makes all other handheld remotes look super boring. But, Savant says that it is integrated with their Savant’s Pro smarts.
It has buttons below a touchscreen and all the control happens wirelessly via Bluetooth (to the Savant Host base) and then it’s converted to Wi-Fi and IR without requiring any line of sight between the Remote and your entertainment system. In fact, the IR Blaster shoots IR all over the room in all directions (for IR controlled gear like a TV, AppleTV, Roku, etc) and the WiFi does the rest (like the Sonos, the lighting systems, etc).
Oh, if that wasn’t enough, the dang thing has built-in voice recognition (and my test was it was better than Apple’s Siri and anyone that knows me knows I use Siri a lot. So, you can simply say “FOOD NETWORK” or “APPLE TV” and it performs all the functions (they didn’t say how many in one command but they did say over 20) So, when you say “Food Network” it turns on the tv and the cable or satellite box, then switches inputs on the TV and turns to the Food Network channel – oh, and can dim the lights automatically if that was a command you programmed to happen every time your TV was turned on. And, built in, when you say “GOODNIGHT,” everything turns off.
So, how easy is it to set-up? Well, they designed something called Savant Instant, an in-app guided setup for the Smart Remote that walks users through each step of the setup process, and helps them connect all their entertainment devices without needing to know specific model types or model numbers.
It will ship in early December, just in time for the holidays.and the Savant Remote + Host entertainment package will cost $499. Lamp Controllers will be available separately for $99 each, giving homeowners the ability to turn lamps on and off from anywhere using either the Savant Remote or Savant App.

Industry Pioneer Passes: RIP Mackey Barron of HB Communications
By Gary Kayye rAVe Founder
THE AV industry’s pioneer passed away at age 95 yesterday. I say THE in all caps, intentionally. There is no one in AV who knew Mackey Barron, founder of HB Motion Picture Service (now known as HB Communications), that would disagree. His history of “firsts” in audiovisual are legendary — in addition to his unwavering support of the AV industry and, specifically, InfoComm. He literally started in AV almost 80 years ago when in 1937 where he helped his Boston-based high school hand-winding film reels. That, eventually, led him to a job curating film strips for a film service company that focused on distribution of educational movies to Catholic schools in the Boston area. That job required him to be the “keeper” of the films so he would also repair broken strips and splice in other materials.
In 1942, he enlisted in the Air Force — at the height of World War II where he served as lieutenant colonel and an Air Force pilot. But in 1944 he became a prisoner of war for nearly a year after his aircraft was shot down over Denmark, which he later described as a “horrific existence.” He was with more than 10,000 other POWs and tried to make the best of a bad situation by reading to his fellow prisoners, convincing the camp to show movies every once in a while (he ran that projector too!) and making ice cream for everyone in camp. He was freed at the end of the war in 1945, weighing only 112 pounds.
Immediately after the war, he went back to work for the same Catholic film company (by then called Cinema Incorporated) and became a film projector salesperson. Then 1946, after getting a loan from a relative (of about $5,000) he started HB Motion Picture Service, which eventually became HB Communications.
During all this, he because involved as a volunteer member of InfoComm — back then called the National Audio Visual Association and, in addition to volunteering, he also served on the associations’ Board of Governor’s two different times and attended and told rAVe a few years ago that he attended 58 straight InfoComm trade shows (even before it was called InfoComm) before having to miss one due to illness. Mackey was awarded rAVe’s first ever AV Hall of Fame Award in 2014.
Many of us called Mackey a friend. Many of us claimed Mackey as a mentor. But, all of us owe him a debt for his service to the AV industry.
Mackey’s funeral service will be held this Sunday, November 1, 2015 at noon at Stanetsky Memorial Chapel, 475 Washington St, Canton MA. It will be followed by a burial at Sharon Memorial Park 120 Canton, St, Sharon, MA. That will be followed by a reception, location TBD. Leave a Comment

SnapAV Buys Outdoor TV Company SunBriteTVSnapAV’s growth story since launching in 2005 is entering an exciting new chapter as it buys its first display company — and more acquisitions are in the works. The Charlotte, NC-based manufacturer, known for its focus on the residential AV market as being both a manufacturer and a distributor, just announced the acquisition of outdoor TV manufacturer, SunBriteTV.
“Our dealers are doing more and more outdoor systems, and we want to help them grow revenue in those areas,” says SnapAV CEO John Heyman. The SunBriteTV lineup will complement SnapAV’s Episode outdoor audio products to provide dealers with a full solution for outdoor living.
Unlike banker-led financial “rollups” that have been common in the AV industry, SnapAV characterizes this transaction similarly to how they’ve entered a number of new product categories. Heyman indicates that in his conversations with dealers, outdoor spaces are discussed as an area of growth and future opportunity. He adds, “This acquisition represents a commitment that we’re making to the outdoors. While it’s our first major acquisition, it’s really just business as usual in terms of listening to our dealers and taking action based on what they tell us.”
SnapAV plans to sell SunBriteTV products directly to dealers rather than through the AV distribution channels that SunBriteTV has used in the past. SunBriteTV’s Cameron Hill comments, “When dealers purchase SunBriteTV products at SnapAV, they will be direct with the manufacturer, and their pricing will reflect that. SnapAV’s business model delivers value and service at significantly lower costs, and, as with all SnapAV products, dealers will begin benefiting from that right away.”
SunBriteTV products will become available through SnapAV before the end of the year. The company indicates that dealers will see lower prices and free shipping when buying directly from SnapAV, rather than through distribution.
SunBriteTV has already been incorporated into the SnapAV website. Leave a Comment

CASIO Adds 3K-Lumen Laser/LED Projector to EcoLite Line Casio America announced today that it will expand its EcoLite lineup of LampFree projectors with a new 3000-lumen laser/LED EcoLite XJ-V2.
CASIO says the XJ-V2 will be introduced at a price that is lower than the cost of a conventional mercury lamp projector of an equivalent brightness plus one replacement lamp. Furthermore, the Casio SSI light source — which uses both a laser and a LED — in the XJ-V2 has a lifespan of up to 20,000 hours, eliminating the need for lamp replacements, and is spec’d to offer electricity consumption that is approximately half that of a mercury lamp projector.
Casio also says they have improved the dust resistance of the XJ-V2 by structuring the internal components into three blocks to shield the optical block from dust. This helps ensure that dust does not lower projection brightness, enabling the XJ-V2 to operate dependably for a long time.
Additionally, the new EcoLite reaches maximum brightness in as fast as five seconds from the time the power is switched on. It can immediately power off with just a touch of the button and then be used again right away when powered back on without the need for a cool-down period. The XJ-V2 can project a 100” image from 10.1 ft to 11.2 ft away using a 1.54 – 1.71 lens.

InFocus Releases Interactive JTouch Whiteboard and Touch Display to Simplify Group WorkInFocus Corporation just unveiled a 65” version of the JTouch Whiteboard (INF6501w) interactive touchscreen display. The 65-inch, 1080p-resolution, multi-point touchscreen INF6501w lets users display and control their Windows, Mac and Chromebook devices, allowing teachers and presenters to show and edit files from the display rather than behind their computers. It has a built-in interactive whiteboard that features digital pens, highlighters, shapes and a variety of colors to choose from, ensuring note-takers have all they need to capture ideas.
Aimed at people who want the Microsoft Surface Hub (but, a lot less expensive), the JTouch Whiteboard (INF6501w) has nearly identical specifications to the JTouch Whiteboard with LightCast (INF6501c) that InFocus released earlier this year but can access a network or the Internet only through a connected computer. The INF6501w supports edge-to-edge touch and Windows 7/8 gestures and offers integrated stereo speakers for 20W stereo sound. It has four front-facing USB ports as well as four HDMI ports, DVI, VGA (HD15 VESA), USB Type-A x 4, 3.5mm stereo audio in, 3.5mm stereo audio out and a USB Type-B port for touch screen control.

Barix SoundScape Audio Over IP Platform for Business Music and Advertising Now ShippingAudio over IP pioneer Barix announces that it is now shipping Extreamer SoundScape, its fully integrated live and scheduled streaming service that allows audio content providers to centrally manage and distribute branded music and advertising over IP networks. The concept, first introduced at the Integrated Systems Europe (ISE) show (you can see the video we shot of it here), has evolved into a fully formed software-as-a-service (SaaS) that brings together cloud-based content management, end point playout and global monitoring capabilities in a highly programmable, user-friendly package.
SoundScape enables businesses to quickly transition from more complex and expensive systems long used for in-store radio. Service providers can quickly launch a SoundScape service with a subscription and IP audio players at each end location, and immediately start reliably delivering music and advertising to restaurants, stores, hotels and public facilities. The upfront “pay as you go” price model, along with SoundScape’s infinite scalability, also ensures attainable long-term expansion goals are reachable while maintaining overall low total cost of ownership. Advanced features, which include dynamic ad insertion for each location, enable new revenue generating streams and accelerate return on investment.
SoundScape eliminates the complex integration of many different components to deliver branded audio to customers. The quick and easy deployment is a win for systems integrators, who can now singularly focus on a centralized integration strategy for in-store radio and other audio over IP delivery platforms. SoundScape brings together integrated audio distribution, remote device management, dynamic content scheduling, system-wide reporting and monitoring, hierarchical user management and high-quality, multi-format audio playout using Barix’s rock-solid Exstreamer SoundScape IP audio players.

For all you REGULAR readers of rAVe ProAV Edition out there, hopefully you enjoyed another opinion-packed issue!
For those of you NEW to rAVe, you just read how we are — we are 100 percent opinionated. We not only report the news and new product stories of the ProAV industry, but we stuff the articles full of our opinions. That may include (but is not limited to) whether or not the product is even worth looking at, challenging the manufacturers on their specifications, calling a marketing-spec bluff and suggesting ways integrators market their products better. But, one thing is for sure, we are NOT a trade publication that gets paid for running editorial or product stories. Traditional trade publications get paid to run product stories — that’s why you see what you see in most of the pubs out there. We are different: We run what we want to run and NO ONE is going to pay us to write anything good (or bad).
