In Memory of Denise Harrison
By Gary Kayye rAVe Founder
I was saddened to learn of the passing of my first ever editor, Denise Harrison.
If you’ve been a long-time reader of mine, then you likely have read her work. Denise was the first person who made me sound better. I have always been what is considered a prolific writer — but that doesn’t mean a good one. There are some days when I can’t think of anything to write about and there are days where stuff just flows like a high-bandwidth internet connection streaming tons of stuff. Some days, I would send her four or five things to edit at once. And, they always came back making me sound better; thus, making them easier for you to read.
Denise worked just like me. There were no off-hours. I could send her something over a weekend and she’d send it back to me within a few hours, edited. Better.
Thank you, Denise. Thank you.
Denise loved to write, read and correct.
Denise finished out her AV career as the director of marketing for PSNI, the leading network of independent audiovisual and broadcast communications systems integrators.
She lost her battle with cancer yesterday. Leave a Comment

Misfit Bolt And The Shift In Lighting Control
By Lee Distad rAVe Columnist
Everything changes. That’s neither a good thing, nor a bad thing; it just is.
Mostly I think of it as a good thing. Sure, old, reliable, profitable categories are superseded by strange new ones, but those scenarios have upsides too.
Don’t forget how often new product appear that are exactly what you needed on a tough job three years ago, but back then didn’t exist. Wireless control of this, two-way control of that, I still find myself looking at new technology and thinking of the problems it would have solved me on job-sites years ago.
Lighting control is a product category that continues to evolve, and professionals need to evolve with it. It’s becoming very apparent that lighting control is no longer dependent upon legacy control systems and home runs of high voltage wiring going back to dimming modules located in a central panel in the utility room.
For years now lighting control has been evolving outwards beyond the breaker boxes, moving from centralized dimmer modules to smarter outlets, switches and dimmers.
Now it seems that lighting control is evolving still further, with the “smarts” moving from the outlets and switches to the bulbs themselves.
Lighting control is not alone in this profound change. Over the past couple of years manufacturers of declining product categories have been branching out into new territory.
You can see that amongst Bluetooth makers. The sun has been setting on the demand for Bluetooth voice products, and that’s led to a flurry of reinvention as Bluetooth makers explore everything from wearables to connected home to moisture sensors for potted plants. That’s why it’s notable to observe Misfit, a company that only recently set up shop making wearables, branch out so quickly into connected home.
Misfit is a primarily a wearables company with two series of fitness and sleep monitors, the Shine and Flash. Now they’ve launched a smart home product, the Misfit Bolt, a color-changing LED light bulb with a wireless interface designed to give users complete control over their home lighting.
Large and round, the Bolt comprises a glass dome utilizing a proprietary light-diffusion coating which promises wide-angle light dispersion with no hot spots above a aluminum body that doubles as a heat sink. In addition to being able to produce enough bright white light for everyday household lighting a palette of millions of color combinations allows for selection of lights capes from pre-made or user-designed scenes.
Manual control and scene setting is from the Misfit Home app on iOS and Android as well as from Logitech’s Harmony Home remote and app. As part of its programmable functionality Bolt can also be used in combination with Misfit’s sleep sensing products to gently wake the user with a sunrise simulation during the lightest stage of sleep in the early morning.
It seems inevitable that new lightbulb technologies are never cheap. Bolt retails for $49 each (or 3 for $129, if that’s any consolation). However if you consider the price trajectory of not-smart lightbulb technologies like CFL or LED both were as-or even-more expensive and came down over time.
Nor is the Misfit Bolt totally alone in the marketplace. There are already several smart LED bulbs jockeying for position, although many don’t look to offer the same level of cohesion. Regardless, the change is upon us, and it’s up to lighting control professionals to adapt.

Ihiji ServiceManager Enables Consolidated, Cloud-Based Management of Client Service Plan Information and Data Ihiji will launch its new Software as a Service (SaaS) tool, Ihiji ServiceManager, at CEDIA Expo 2015 next week. Designed to help integrators, security monitoring firms and other companies and trades that offer technical support or other services to make their businesses more productive and profitable, Ihiji ServiceManager allows for a service-based recurring revenue stream.
Ihiji says that through its research, it learned that integration firms felt they did not have a consistent method for creating service contracts; had no contact system to determine which clients are covered for various levels of service; did not know how to track prospects; did not have an effective method for sending monthly bills; and had no centralized place for all customer and site data.
So, that’s what Ihiji ServiceManager allows integrators to do by allowing them to set up and store service-plan information and data on all clients and sites and access it through a single, cloud-based system. The tool also claims to help integrators with existing service businesses to streamline and amplify their efforts. Ihiji ServiceManager gives integrators and their team members – including:
- Contact management
- Service plan management
- RMR billing
- Technical support tracking
- Centralized project documentation
Ihiji ServiceManager also helps manage and track service level agreements, device and network documentation, recent client activity, ticketing, passwords and customer contact information, and even contains a centralized service documentation repository, which might contain files such as installation notes and CAD designs. The document repository itself is an important part of a technology provider’s institutional knowledge, which can easily disappear along with a technician that leaves the company. Ihiji ServiceManager ensures all of the important assets are captured.

Primacoustic Paintables Clouds Now Shipping
Primacoustic as launched Paintables Clouds, a new series of acoustic panels you can paint on, and they are already shipping.
The new Paintables clouds include the circular Cirrus, the hexagonal Hexus and the square Altos. Each panel is made from 1-1/2″ thick high density 6lb glass wool for exceptionally even absorption and feature resin hardened edges with micromesh that together fully encapsulate the panel to prevent dusting. Paintables are factory painted on all sides in Absolute White latex and ready for mounting. Unique to their design is a proprietary surface than enables one to lightly spray paint the panels on-site to color-match the decor without affecting the acoustical performance.
Paintables clouds are designed as acoustic treatment for houses of worship, conference centers, restaurants, offices, boardrooms, educational facilities, community halls, hotel auditoriums, broadcast facilities, museums, retail, home theaters, recording studios, gymnasiums and performance halls.
Installation is easy. For larger spaces, a selection of hanging hardware allows the Paintable Clouds to be suspended horizontally or vertically from the ceiling, absorbing energy on both sides for maximum efficiency. The same panels may be wall-mounted using our proprietary Surface Impaler technology to create a distinctive wall treatment.
The Cirrus, Hexus and Altos are available in 36″ and 48″ diameters. As with all Primacoustic panels, Paintables have been independently tested for acoustic performance and fire-tested to achieve the most stringent Class-A ratings. This makes them safe for use in all types of installations.

Proficient Launches Dealer-Focused Product and Brand Announcements at CEDIA 2015At this week’s CEDIA Expo in Dallas, Core Brands will debut Proficient Signature architectural speakers and a revamp of its existing Proficient Protege speaker line. This will create new opportunities for installing dealers while staying within the Proficient brand.
The Proficient Signature portfolio of ten architectural speakers builds on the success Proficient achieved with its Signature high-gloss black cabinet loudspeakers and subwoofers. By focusing on the flagship ceiling, inwall and outdoor speakers, it will allow installing dealers a highly effective way to upsell Proficient by focusing more attention on its position at the top end of the brand.
Proficient Signature offers a major step up in performance over Proficient Protege and incorporates a striking new industrial design. All Signature architectural speakers will use the high-powered combination of Kevlar woofers and aluminum-dome tweeters and will continue using the clever thin-bezel grille design of the legacy Proficient line.
This sell-up strategy is the beginning of a larger brand segmentation program to come. This new approach will allow dealers to more fully leverage the power and prestige of the brand with an expanded product portfolio with a total of 12 products in Proficient Signature.
Adding to the Proficient Signature high-gloss cabinet loudspeaker line will be five home theater loudspeakers led by its flagship 10” 3-way ceiling speaker, 8” and 6½” LCR ceiling speakers plus 6½” and 5¼” dual-woofer inwall LCR speakers. For whole-house, there will be four models: 8” and 6½” ceiling speakers and 8” and 6½” inwall speakers. And there will be an 8” 3-way outdoor speaker in the Proficient Signature lineup.

Bryston Launches Model T Cinema Reference In-wall LoudspeakerBryston today introduced its Model T Cinema “reference” home theater in-wall loudspeaker. By leveraging the design of the Model T floor-standing loudspeaker, Bryston has developed an architectural speaker system for dedicated home theater rooms.
In order to achieve the desired performance goals from an in-wall speaker system, Bryston is using seven drivers in a three-way configuration capable of up to 120dB of output (supposedly without dynamic compression). Many in-wall loudspeakers sacrifice power response when submerged within a wall, however Bryston says they have overcome these limitations by placing the drivers on a robust baffle slightly forward of the wall’s surface, enabling the Model T Cinema to deliver a more realistic soundstage, precise imaging and superb dynamic capabilities.

Torus Power Launches TOT AVR Series Toroidal Isolation Transformers
Torus Power announced its new TOT AVR Series of toroidal isolation power transformers this month, with models also available for use in Continental Europe (TOT AVR CE) and the United Kingdom (TOT AVR UK). The TOT AVR Series builds upon Torus Power’s successful, compact and competitively priced TOT Series of Toroidal Isolation Transformer products, but adds Automatic Voltage Regulation (AVR) to an already robust feature set and a new, lower price point.
Voltage sags, power line surges and brownouts can stress and shorten equipment life. Torus Power TOT AVR isolation transformers address this with Automatic Voltage Regulation technology that provides stable voltage to keep equipment running in the optimal range of +/- 10V for international voltages and 115VAC to 125VAC for North America. To accomplish this, TOT AVR apparently continuously monitors incoming voltage to detect high- and low-voltage conditions, and then seamlessly and instantaneously triggers compensating circuitry to ensure the voltage powering equipment is always operating at optimal levels.
The TOT AVR lineup meets both IEC and Neutrik standards, and shelf or rack mount configurations are available. Here are all the tech specs. Leave a Comment

Pakedge Debuts WX-1 Gigabit AC Wireless Access PointPakedge’s new gigabit wireless access point (AP), the WX-1, is an 802.11ac access point that features a 3×3 Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) radio configuration for what Pakedge claims is up to five times faster connection speed and four times more bandwidth. Supporting twice as many clients, the WX-1 offers a higher channel capacity than N based access points as it has channels up to 80Mhz and is capable of processing up to four times as many signals per channel.
Plenum rated for fire safety compliance, the WX-1 is aimed at ProAV integrators for corporate installation but Pakedge is hoping that it’s used in hospitals, schools, and MDUs. It also supports RADIUS (Remote Authentication Dial-In User Service) servers, which centralize authentication, authorization, and account management for enhanced security. The WX also supports the more secure WPA Enterprise and WPA2 Enterprise signal encryption for those who use RADIUS servers.
Designed for bandwidth intensive multimedia traffic, the WX-1 features something called TruStream and Pakedge Zones which are able to recognize and prioritize latency sensitive voice and video traffic for seamless performance. It’s integrated with six internal antennas.
The WX-1 can be wall/ceiling surface mounted and the in-ceiling/in-wall mounting trays allows integrators to stock only one SKU that can be upgraded as needed. The WX-1 also includes t-bar brackets for drop-tile ceilings and there is even an outdoor version. Because the WX-1 is PoE+ powered, the placement of the AP is flexible and not contingent on whether or not an AC power outlet is available.

ESP/SurgeX Intros Envision, New Monitoring and Analytics Tool for Integrators
ESP/SurgeX’s new Envision is a power diagnostics system that measures and records power conditions and presents detailed data in live or date-stamped reports. As integrators and electricians diligently work together to complete a job, Envision provides energy data that can be used to accurately identify the source of common electrical issues the first time around, saving money for the consumer as well as time and resources for the integrator and electrician by preventing unnecessary services or repairs.
The ESP/SurgeX Envision is a solution for multiple scenarios: Integrators can use the device as a pre-install “electricity health meter” to identify and fix preexisting power issues before any equipment is installed. A clean bill of electrical health has the benefit of prolonging equipment lifespans and reducing the potential for power-related disruptions. Envision can easily be attached to existing installations and left onsite where Envision can analyze and record power anomalies in real time, and provide power management functionality. When used in conjunction with the ESP/SurgeX Remote Portal, Envision offers the convenience of 24/7 recording of all power conditions, so issues can be reviewed and fixed without a site visit, thus cutting down the time it takes to diagnose the root cause of system problems.
ESP says that to mitigate downtime and disturbances, Envision constantly measures power data, including: line-neutral voltage, neutral-ground voltage, amperage, crest factor, power factor, line frequency and energy usage. A real-time scope meter provides real-time analysis of power related events to easily identify problems and trends. Envision also records the specific time and date of over/under voltages, surges, power outages and shut-offs, and presents the data via the live interface or downloadable reports.
Other features of the Envision include an internal battery so it can keep working and recording data, even during a power outage. Flexible communication options make Envision compatible with Zigbee, 3G cellular, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth protocols as well. Envision’s software offers the most comprehensive analysis of power quality and consumption available, giving both integrators and electricians the knowledge and hard data necessary to troubleshoot a wide range of issues.

FX Luminaire Introduces the Luxor CUBEFX Luminaire just launched its new new Luxor CUBE, a hardwired module that allows the Luxor controller to zone and dim other brands of low voltage and line voltage light fixtures. In addition to controlling carriage, entry pillar, and holiday or bistro lights, the CUBE even allows control of water feature pumps, automatic gates, and any item with a relay input.
The CUBE was developed so that consumers are not limited to the FX brand of fixtures. Sometimes landscape lighting design is tied to a particular fixture style the homeowner or designer prefers. With the CUBE, Luxor can now control, zone, and dim their own fixtures as well as any low voltage or high voltage outdoor lights from other manufacturers.
Installed via direct burial for low voltage or in a junction box for high voltage, the CUBE creates a zone, and all devices installed in-line after the cube operate as a single group, turning on/off and dimming together. The CUBE brings all outdoor lighting together in one automated system, offering the ultimate in control for residential and commercial applications. The CUBE is available in three models: Low Voltage, High Voltage, and a combined relay and 0-10V.

For all you REGULAR readers of rAVe HomeAV Edition out there, hopefully you enjoyed another opinion-packed issue!
For those of you NEW to rAVe, you just read how we are — we are 100% opinionated. We not only report the news and new product stories of the high-end HomeAV industry, but we stuff the articles full of our opinions. That may include (but is not limited to) whether or not the product is even worth looking at, challenging the manufacturers on their specifications, calling a marketing-spec bluff and suggesting ways integrators market their products better. But, one thing is for sure, we are NOT a trade publication that gets paid for running editorial or product stories. Traditional trade publications get paid to run product stories — that’s why you see what you see in most of the pubs out there. We are different: we run what we want to run and NO ONE is going to pay us to write anything good (or bad).

A little about me: I graduated from Journalism School at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (where I am adjunct faculty). I’ve been in the AV-industry since 1987 where I started with Extron and eventually moved to AMX. So, I guess I am an industry veteran (although I don’t think I am that old). I have been an opinionated columnist for a number of industry publications and in the late 1990s I started the widely read KNews eNewsletter (the first in the AV market) and also created the model for and was co-founder of AV Avenue – which is now known as InfoComm IQ. rAVe Publications has been around since 2003, when we launched our original newsletter, rAVe ProAV Edition.
rAVe HomeAV Edition, co-published with CEDIA, launched in February, 2004.
