AV People: Joe Hillis of ITDRC
By Molly Stillman
rAVe Director of Marketing and New Business Development You may or may not know Joe Hillis. He’s been a systems engineer who spent most of his life working IT in public safety before retiring in 2004. He then went to work for himself as an IT consultant for small businesses. He knows technology, he lives technology and he breathes technology.
But Joe has a passion for technology that spans beyond the walls of a boardroom or small business — Joe knows that technology is a life source for people and when disaster strikes and the technology is taken away, that can be debilitating.
After 9/11, the concept of a national technology guard of volunteers was introduced to Congress. “We thought what a great idea this would be,” said Joe. “But nothing happened for five years and finally in 2008, we decided it wasn’t going to happen on our time, so I co-founded the ITDRC, Information Technology Disaster Resource Center, with a few others in the industry. I happened to be the guy with the most flexible schedule, so I’m now the operations director for the non-profit. I spend a good part of my time just running the organization.”
So ever since ITDRC was founded, Joe has split his time between his consulting and his non-profit. The ITDRC is a non-profit of IT and technology professionals that help communities in disaster.
“We’ve served in nearly two dozen disaster areas since we started in 2008,” said Joe. “Everything from wildfires to Hurricanes Isaac, Irene and Sandy, and tornadoes in Kentucky, Indiana, Alabama and Joplin, Missouri.”
This past fall, the ITDRC was put to the ultimate test. A few days before Hurricane Sandy made landfall, Joe and the ITDRC were contacted by FEMA in advance of the disaster.
“This wasn’t really the way things usually go for us,” recalled Joe. “FEMA reached out to us; they knew the scope of the storm was so big and the impact was going to be so large they wanted us all on the same page. So, we got involved before Sandy ever made landfall and began directing resources into New York and worked with our partners to make sure we were prepared.”
Sandy was by far the biggest disaster ITDRC had dealt with to date. Joe was deployed to New York for a month and got home shortly after Thanksgiving. He made another trip back up there after the first of the year for a follow up visit.
“Our biggest concern was getting satellite and Wi-Fi connectivity in the affected areas. So, I did everything from coordinating efforts to actually installing. It was soup to nuts kind of work,” said Joe. “We had to make sure that our volunteer efforts from our organization’s standpoint were met with a need. So any equipment or service we could get our hands on, we needed to match it with a need in the area.”
Joe doesn’t work alone though. Of course he has his colleagues and his volunteers, but his most important partner in his efforts with ITDRC is his wife of eight years, Debbie.
Joe is the father of three children, all boys, Chris, Brandon and Trever, and they’re all grown and out of the house. And since the boys have left, Debbie and Joe spend almost six to seven months a year traveling. Between their own work and their work with the non-profit, they’re all over the country.
Although Debbie does A LOT with the organization, Joe says Debbie’s gift is truly in her compassion for disaster victims. “I like to call her the Chief Social Officer,” he said. “Debbie has that way of connecting with people to convey that everything is going to be OK. I’m more of a tech person, so when we go into a disaster area, she usually handles the social side. I remember in Branson after the tornadoes, we’d go into some of those small businesses and Debbie would talk to the owners – she was that calming person that made those connections with people who had just lost everything. Those people just needed someone to reassure them and Debbie does that so well.”
Joe knows that with running any non-profit there are challenges and there are rewards.
“Our biggest challenge is always funding – finding that constant revenue stream to make sure we can do everything we need, want and would like to do,” he said. “When we were in New York, it was a dynamic thing, we’d have a donation come in and so we could do more. It was constantly changing.”
But the rewards far outweigh any challenge they face.
“There are so many rewards doing what we do,” Joe said. “When you’re able to recover someone’s data or watch someone make a phone call to a family member that they haven’t spoken to in over a week and that family member has no idea if their loved one is even okay, THAT is rewarding.”
In New York, they were able to bring Internet and Wi-Fi connectivity to the Rockaway Peninsula, reconnecting thousands of residents with the outside world again.
Joe noted that they’re always looking for who they can help the most. What can they do that helps the MOST people? It’s not about him; it’s about his cause.
If you’d like to learn more about how you can get involved with ITDRC by registering as a volunteer or giving a donation, you can find out more at http://www.itdrc.org.
Thank you Joe. It’s people like you that make what we do matter.

H.265 (HEVC) Codec Approved by ITU
By Matt Brennesholtz
DisplayDaily Standards – The proposed High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) Codec, also known as H.265, has been approved by the ITU after roughly nine years of development effort. This builds upon and replaces Emmy award winning ITU-T H.264 / MPEG-4 Advanced Video Coding (AVC). This previous standard had in turn replaced multiple proprietary codecs and currently encodes about 80 percent of all Internet video.
The current AVC standard is deployed in products and services from companies including Adobe, Apple, BBC, BT, France Telecom, Intel, Microsoft, Motorola, Nokia, Polycom, Samsung, Sony, Tandberg, Toshiba and others to deliver high definition video images over broadcast television, cable TV, a variety of direct-broadcast satellite-based television services, Blu-Ray disc formats, mobile phones, videoconferencing tools, digital storage media, and Internet Protocol television (IPTV). It remains the most deployed global video compression standard. The H.264 standard was authorized in 2008 for use in the encoding in the digital terrestrial broadcasting in the US although it is not currently used for that.
The key improvement in HEVC compared to AVC encoding is the reduction in bit rate of about 50 percent without an accompanying reduction in image quality. This is key for video over IP applications such as the Internet, where the network bandwidth is limited. While Internet providers are increasing the available bandwidth rapidly, end users are increasing their use of bandwidth rapidly as well, through more streaming video, more video downloads and downloads of higher resolution video. Currently it is estimated that 50 percent of all Internet bandwidth is dedicated to video.
HEVC is by no means a finished standard. In fact, the parts that are finished haven’t even been published yet since the vote to approve it took place on January 25th. What has happened is ITU-T’s Study Group 16 has agreed first-stage approval of Recommendation ITU-T H.265, which will also be ISO/IEC 23008-2. The standard is the product of collaboration between the ITU Video Coding Experts Group (VCEG) and the ISO/IEC Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG), hence the two different standards numbers.
Companies including ATEME, Broadcom, Cyberlink, Ericsson, Fraunhofer HHI, Mitsubishi, NHK, NTT DOCOMO and Qualcomm have already shown implementations of HEVC. The new standard includes a ‘Main’ profile that supports 8-bit 4:2:0 video, a ‘Main 10’ profile with 10-bit support, and a ‘Main Still Picture’ profile for still image coding that employs the same coding tools as a video ‘intra’ picture.
As I said, HEVC isn’t finished yet. The ITU/ISO/IEC Joint Collaborative Team on Video Coding (JCT-VC) will continue work on a range of extensions to HEVC, including support for 12-bit video as well as 4:2:2 and 4:4:4 chroma formats. Another important element of this work will be the progression of HEVC towards scalable video coding. The three bodies will also work within the Joint Collaborative Team on 3D-Video (JCT-3V) on the extension of HEVC towards stereoscopic and 3D video coding.
4K/Ultra-HD TV sets have gotten a lot of press recently, including at Insight Media. There has also been a lot of press about the lack of 4K content to show on these sets. One of the issues of 4K content is bandwidth — it takes more bandwidth to encode the 4x pixel content of Ultra-HD compared to 1080p, although not 4x the bandwidth. Broadcasters have been very reluctant to use more bandwidth than necessary for a given channel; they would rather use bandwidth to broadcast additional channels to attract additional viewers, advertisers and revenue. With HEVC, the needed bandwidth is reduced by roughly 50 percent compared to AVC. This means 4K content compressed with HEVC will take less bandwidth than 1080p content compressed with AVC. Of course, bandwidth is bandwidth and the content providers may decide to provide twice as many choices of HDTV content when HEVC is implemented rather than provide the same number of 4K choices with HEVC as there are HD choices with AVC. Probably, of course, it will be a mixture of both, plus some AVC SD content will be upgraded to HEVC HD content. Whatever happens, everyone seems to be a winner: consumers with more choices of better quality content; broadcasters, including terrestrial, cable, satellite and Internet, able to provide more and better choices; and bandwidth providers getting a little relief in the relentless requirement to provide more bandwidth.

Recently from rAVe Radio Back to Top Peerless-AV Acquires Ciil Technologies, Manufacturers of Outdoor and Weatherproof TVs and Displays Peerless-AV today announced the acquisition of Ciil Technologies, LLC, a manufacturer of environmental/weatherproof outdoor TVs and displays marketed under the UltraView and Xtreme brand names.
Peerless says that Ciil’s products are the only outdoor TVs and displays that are completely sealed and utilize no external vents, exhaust fans or filters. The patented design holds the highest protection rating in the industry at IP 68 and NEMA 6, allowing the products to be submerged in water for 30 minutes without failure. Applications range from professional and college stadiums, public transit, marinas, cruise ships, yachts and factory floors to residential backyards and poolside patios. Models from 26” to 55” are available.
“The market for outdoor TVs is growing rapidly in commercial settings, where weatherproof displays are replacing expensive enclosures, as well as in residential environments, where the backyard has become the new living room. With this acquisition, our customers can take full advantage of this expanding market sector,” said Michael Campagna, president of the Peerless Technology Division.
“At the same time, this is a strategic acquisition that extends the investment in emerging technology that led to last month’s announcement that we have formed a separate technology division,” Campagna said. “Our goal is to build a global technology business on a par with our global AV mounting solutions business. Acquiring Ciil is a key building block in that process.”
Under the terms of the agreement, Ciil’s manufacturing and operations will be relocated to Peerless-AV’s headquarters and 320,000-square-foot manufacturing facility in Aurora, Ill., a suburb of Chicago. Ciil products will now be produced in a dedicated 10,000-square-foot area within the Peerless-AV plant, including a 3,000-square-foot clean room for assembly and testing.
All Ciil TVs and displays will continue to be manufactured in the U.S., all Ciil personnel and management will be retained and Ciil products will continue to be sold under the Ciil trademark and the UltraView and Xtreme brand names.
The transaction closed on Feb. 1, 2013. Financial terms were not disclosed. More information on Ciil’s products can be found at http://www.ciiltech.com

Barco Buys Wireless Company AWIND Without much fan fair, Barco bought one of the leading wireless transmission (wireless high-resolution video and audio) company today for $7.1 million dollars. AWIND, based in Taiwan, was founded in 2003 and employs about 60 people. Currently, it's the technology that's used in the majority of the projector manufacturers that do wireless video and audio transmission (e.g., EPSON, Sharp and Sony). AWIND's wireless transmission system includes its own branded "black box" hardware, embedded firmware, wireless networking and software for Windows, Mac, Mobile and Linux. The system supports resolutions up 2048×1536. Share Article Back to Top PMA Reports Projector Market Hit 9.5 Million in 2012 PMA Research just released its latest research findings on the worldwide projector market. Total projector volume reached 9.5 million in 2012, a mild increase over 2011 as growth in emerging market countries was mainly offset by challenging conditions in developed markets.
In the Mainstream (1,000-3,999 lumens) projector market, education tenders continued to boost sales in Asia, particularly in the ASEAN countries, India and the Philippines. Projector sales in China managed to finish the year on a strong note after the slowdown in mid-2012 that mirrored the slowdown in economic activity. Similarly, the projector market in Brazil managed to end 2012 with some momentum after struggling earlier in the year. Initial projector shipments for Brazil's ProInfo program started in the fourth quarter and are expected to drive volumes higher in 2013. In North America and Western Europe, constrained education funding impacted overall projector sales though interactive projectors and ultra-short-throw models remained as bright spots in these regions. These two mainstream segments — interactive projectors and ultra-short-throw projectors — finished the year up more than 30 percent on a worldwide basis as growth also accelerated in emerging market countries.
Sales of High-End projectors (4,000+ lumens) continued to outperform the Mainstream market. Sales of super-bright models used in conference rooms and large venues registered a double-digit gain in 2012. While regional differences persist in the resolution and brightness mix of the high-end market, the segment as a whole performed quite well on a worldwide basis thanks to product depth and breadth that satisfied budgets and venues of all sizes. In the other segment of the high-end market, cumulative d-cinema shipments finished the year closing in on the 100,000 milestone. Digital conversions and new cinema construction in China, India and Latin America along with the introduction of lower-cost projectors for smaller exhibitors will be the engines of future growth.
In the New Era (sub-1,000 lumens) range, worldwide unit sales hit 1.7 million. Sales of pico projectors were sluggish earlier in the year but managed to finish the second half of with an impressive 35 percent gain. Personal projectors also finished the year on an upswing as more vendors crossed the 500-lumen threshold in compact form factors.

Pressure Detection for Multi-Touch Displays FlatFrog’s Planar Scatter Detection technology (PSD) is the first multi-touch display technology to offer pressure detection. PSD is an advanced optical in-glass multi-touch technology where light is injected inside the top glass pane and scatters wherever the top surface is touched. This scattering effect is detected, and positions of several simultaneous touches are determined. Now not only can PSD detect pressure, but it can also detect 1,000 levels of pressure for 40 individual touches.
FlatFrog’s first own product, the 32” FlatFrog Multitouch 3200, was launched last year and fully supports pressure detection. Previously purchased units may need an upgrade to the latest firmware, available at no extra cost through FlatFrog.

The need to characterize reference monitors has become more acute in recent years since the demise of the CRT reference monitors which used to be ubiquitous in studios.
CalMAN Studio characterizes a display in detail and creates a characterization cube, also known as a 3D look-up table (LUT), to compensate for the monitor’s deviations from a reference standard. PLUTO applies the cube to the signal, allowing video professionals to be sure they are seeing exactly the same image on all monitors.
PLUTO features twin HDSDI 3G connections and can be used to transcode from Dual Link 4:4:4 to single link 4:2:2 and or RGB/YUV color space. Each PLUTO has 16 available slots to host a chain of 1D/3D/1D LUT’s for complex color pipelines, all instantly switchable and changeable from either a local front panel or a remote GUI.
A "Dual Head" mode allows a single Pluto unit to be used with two totally independent single link sources with separate 16/17/32/33 point cubes applied to each destination display. Alternatively the device can be used in dual link mode with a single display. The Pluto is also available in a configuration compatible with the emerging 4K displays.

Share Article Back to Top Pakedge Debuts 24-Port Gigabit Switch That Handles Fiber and Ethernet Pakedge Device & Software last week launched the S26e, a 24-port gigabit Ethernet switch with two fiber ports. The S26e (the “e” stands for “Express”) is an unmanaged plug and play switch, which enables easy installation. It includes 24 10/100/1000 Mbps gigabit Ethernet ports, as well as two SFP (small form-factor pluggable) mini-GBIC fiber ports, making it ideal for larger installations and where long distance fiber optic cable runs are needed for connecting guest houses or additional buildings on a property that are away from the main home installation.
All cables are installed from the rear, a feature pioneered by Pakedge that enables a clean, uncluttered installation in an A/V cabinet, rack or structured wiring panel. The S26e has an ultra-quiet fan for silent operation, a major advantage when the unit is installed near A/V equipment or in the main home entertainment room.
Another useful feature is the S26e’s Automatic Loop Detection. This prevents looping issues, where a device’s cable might be inadvertently plugged into the wrong spot to create an unwanted signal loop.
The S26e’s store-and-forward architecture filters errors and forwards data packets in a non-blocking environment. Its flow control operation ensures that correct data is transmitted, and the S26e’s backpressure flow control mechanisms work for both full- and half-duplex modes. The S26e supports the NWay auto-negotiation protocol that automatically detects network speed (10/100/1000 Mbps) and full/half duplex modes. In addition, Pakedge says its Auto-MDI/MDI-X functionality eliminates the need for crossover cables (for larger installations, each port can be used to connect to a larger switch or hub, with no crossover Ethernet cable required). Its blue front-panel indicators provide real-time status monitoring. The S26e is 1U rack space high and comes with rack-mount hardware.

Share Article Back to Top New InFocus Projectors Designed for Large Venues InFocus' new DLP projector is the IN5550, which is aimed at larger venues. Specified at 8,300 lumens, this is the brightest projector InFocus has ever offered. The company isn't really known as an install projector provider — in fact, InFocus is known to have bought and destroyed an install-brand: Proxima.
The IN5550 offers two lamps, motorized lens shift and 360-degree projection and image blending, which lets users project separate images from multiple projectors, creating one stunning seamless image. The projectors also come with two easily replaceable color wheels. Share Article Back to Top Mitsubishi Goes Lampless with New Laser Projectors Mitsubishi Electric brings out the LaserVue family of lamp-free projectors, the company's first hybrid-design. To produce the red-green-blue lighting elements required to form all displays, Mitsubishi LaserVue projectors use one pure red LED and up to 34 pure blue laser diodes of varying strengths and wavelengths, and a solid-colored phosphor wheel that emits green light.
Unlike other light engine designs in the market today (e.g., Casio), some of the blue laser diodes are diverted to excite phosphors on this single-segment wheel. This creates a clean, clear green, eliminating color breaking or rainbow effects that are sometimes observed in similar projectors. Those that use dual or multi-segment color phosphor wheels often attempt to boost brightness at the expense of color accuracy. Mitsubishi’s new design uses a single-segment wheel — thus, no reduction or brightness.
Mitsubishi’s new line of LaserVue projectors consists of three portable models. The NW31U-EST WXGA (1280×800 resolution) extreme short throw model will be the first to become available in April, followed shortly by two standard throw models, the NW30U WXGA (1280×800 resolution) and the NF32U 1080p resolution projector.
They are spec'd with 2,500 lumens, 3,000 lumens and 3,000 lumens, respectively, and to last for 20,000 hours. All three have both HDMI and VGA ports and can handle network content as well.
