UBTech 2017 – A Great Start to InfoComm
By Scott Tiner rAVe Columnist
For the first time in several years, I was able to attend InfoComm. Before attending the show however, I was fortunate enough to be a speaker at UBTech. UBTech is a trade show/conference about IT and AV in higher education. CCUMC, which I wrote about back in November of this year, worked with UBTech as a program partner, which is how I got the invitation. In my experiences over the past couple of years, this show is by far the most valuable for me.
If it was valuable to me as a consumer and you serve as an integrator or manufacturer to a higher ed market, then it should be valuable to you as well. Why?
My experience this year is that all the people I met at UBTech were people in a position of decision making. They were directors of IT departments, a couple of academic deans, many CIOs and plenty of technology managers. Every person I spoke with at the show had the ability to go back to his or her campus and make a purchasing decision. This clientele is one that many AV focused conferences have struggled with attracting. Other shows tend to attract the more technical crowd looking for technical knowledge and new products. But many of those people need to go back and pitch a sale to their bosses on campus. At UBTech, you are dealing directly with their bosses.
Unlike many other conferences, this one was AV focused, but clearly an IT conference as well. Perhaps that is why so many conferences have a hard time attracting the crowd with purchasing power. They sell themselves as AV conferences. UBTech sells itself as the place where IT and AV converge. In higher education, particularly, this balance of IT and AV gives more senior people the opportunity to consider going because they feel the conference will be more broad.
Perhaps one of the best things you could do as a manufacturer or an integrator is to send your designers and salespeople to every concurrent session. This gives them several opportunities. First, if you are a national integration company you can get to meet leaders in the higher ed AV/IT world from all over the country. Specifically, by attending sessions you get to make face contact with dozens of potential clients. Second (and most importantly), you get to sit down and LISTEN and LEARN. So often in the life of a sales person, company owner or designer you are doing more talking than listening. This is natural, of course, as you are trying to make a sale. I believe that listening to people who actually use the technology and have discovered what works for them is really the best way to learn how to design and sell future systems. You can hear about the successes and the failures and which features are used and which are not. From there, the selling and designing become so much easier because you are not talking a client into something, you are just giving them what they need.
A huge benefit for me at UBTech is that I was able to actually speak to people at the booths. As much as I love InfoComm and am amazed as I walk around the show floor, I can count on one hand the number of times I have been able to have a substantial conversation with a vendor. This is understandable: I am an end-user, by myself. You compare that with a regional distributor with a team of six people, I know who I would choose to speak to as a salesperson. UBTech is not like that. I talked to people at about three-fourths of the booths for five minutes or so. You know, the usual — spend a few minutes learning about products to see if you have any interest. Of those booths, there were about ten that I spent more than fifteen minutes speaking in detail about their products. During this time I did not feel like I was trying to be shooed away so the staff could talk to a bigger fish.
The final reason that you as a tech manager or integrator want to go to UBTech is that it’s a conference that centers on higher education. This allows you target your marketing during the show very directly. Do you have products or services that are actually aimed at the corporate market? If so, don’t bother bringing them. Presumably, you have staff that are dedicated to the education vertical market. Make sure they are the staff that you send to this conference. I spent a some time at the FSR booth with Gina Sansivero, and they did it right. FSR had a booth on the floor, with their education products on display and their education representative staffing the booths. They knew their target audience and directed their display at them.
Next year, UBTech is at The Mirage in Las Vegas. If you are reading this and holding onto one last excuse, “I would love to go, but I can’t miss InfoComm,” I’ve got good news for you: UBTech takes place in the days preceding InfoComm. This year the closing keynote was at noon on Wednesday, giving you plenty of time to head on over to the show floor. I am already planning on going (and I don’t like Vegas) because of the value I got from it this year. Will I be seeing you there? Leave a Comment

rAVe NOW’s InfoComm Coverage Is Next Best Thing to Being There
By Gary Kayye rAVe Founder
There’s no substitute for going to InfoComm — it’s a must-attend trade show if you are in the commercial AV industry. But, not everyone is allowed to attend.
If you weren’t one of the lucky 44,077 people that were in Orlando for InfoComm 2017, then we have a solution for you.
We actually brought over 25 reporters to the show. So, we have way, way, way more coverage than anyone else. And, we covered more than you could have had you attended yourself.
How? Well, we went to every single booth on the show floor and shot videos (1,650+ of them) of all the new products launched at InfoComm this year. And, we recorded podcasts (45+), we video live-streamed daily each day using Facebook LIVE, we wrote blogs 20+), we published 300+ news stories and we shot in excess of 3,500 photos from the show floor!
And, it’s all in one, searchable, dedicated website — a website we built just for infoComm 2017. Check it out here.
InfoComm 2018 is in Las Vegas so you should put it on your calendar now — June 6-8, 2018!

Is This the Best New K-12 Product at InfoComm? We Think So
By Gary Kayye rAVe Founder
In a tiny 10×10 booth in the middle of the show floor debuted the best new K-12 product we saw at InfoComm 2017 in Orlando, Fla.. Pilot, as the product is called, is from a company that’s known for document cameras, HoverCam. Pilot is basically a glass-topped lectern (even though they call it a podium) that’s integrated with a 21″ 10-touch capable touch-screen monitor (flat mounted behind the glass on the left side of the lectern), a built-in i5 core Windows 10 computer, a 13-megapixel 4K output document camera, an iPad doc two HDMI inputs, one HDMI output and a wireless 4K capable transmitter (in case you don’t want to use the HDMI output). Yes, all of that is inside this very cool looking lectern on wheels for $2,500.
Huh? Yes, $2,500.
Aimed at K-12, this product WILL crossover to the university arena too. rAVe founder Gary Kayye teaches at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in the School of Media and Journalism and he’s ordered one to replace the desk at the front of his classroom — he says he’ll be using it as a connection hub for ad-hoc teaching. Sure, he’s still have the rack with the Extron live-streaming system with the SMP-351, their matrix and the retractable Cable Cubby but the Pilot, since it’s mobile, allows a teacher to make any part of the room the “front of the room.”
Here’s a video we shot of the Pilot at UBTech last week prior to InfoComm as well as the video we shot at InfoComm. Watch them and you’ll fall in love with this product! Leave a Comment

Crestron Ships SSW Room Availability Hallway SignCrestron’s new SSW Room Availability Hallway Sign is a wall mounted room sign that illuminates bright green to indicate an available room, and red to indicate an occupied room. The SSW is perfectly visible from up to 50 feet away and yet highly energy efficient, utilizing less than 2 watts.
Integrators connect the SSW to a Crestron TSW x60 Series touch screen (via the included 15′ USB cable) for a programming-free solution with what Crestron is calling instant out of the box functionality. Alternatively, multiple hallway signs can be connected to a Crestron control system up to 3,000 feet away via Cresnet cable.
Housed in an enclosure that can be custom engraved with the room name (or left blank), the SSW can accommodate a choice of font sizes and the option of one or two lines of text. The acrylic lights up, outlining the edges of the sign and the engraved room name or number. By connecting to a Crestron control system and using Crestron Studio or SIMPL, programmers can customize the RGB capabilities of the SSW such as displaying company or team colors, adjusting brightness, fading in and out in 1% increments, and flashing.
The LED module installs flush with the wall via a single gang box or p-ring that allows connection to a Cresnet or USB cable. The acrylic face of the sign attaches with two screws. The designer molding slides over the sconce-style acrylic sign and attaches with two built-in magnets.

Barco Debuts New Overture AV Control System Aimed at Meeting Rooms at InfoComm Barco will provide an opportunity for visitors at InfoComm to test drive the new Overture solution. The new version of Overture will be available to ship by Aug. 31, 2017. This new system is an attempt for Barco to take a position in the control system market — competing with Crestron, Extron, AMX, Utelogy, etc.
Overture is an enterprise-wide AV control software solution. It controls and monitors all AV and other networked devices in multiple locations via an interactive user interface. Running on commercial off-the-shelf hardware, Overture features a low total cost of ownership while helping to reduce other operating costs in the office environment.
The latest version of Overture emphasizes automation. Overture “behaviors” enable the automatic creation of tasks for specific rooms. For example, an administrator can set a task to automatically switch on or off all the devices in a single room — without any programming. The system can seamlessly integrate with presentation tools such as Barco ClickShare, allowing a presenter to set-up the room in seconds — from switching on the main display to adjusting the lighting — with the touch of a ClickShare button.
The Scheduler capability now allows users to set certain actions at pre-defined moments in time, such as turning off all devices at night to save electricity. With the addition of the Behaviors and Scheduling functions, a facility or IT manager can easily configure the system to enable the entire enterprise to be controlled with the click of a button, or even execute tasks automatically for specific times.

New Crestron DM XiO Director Is for Enterprise Provisioning and Management of AV-over-IP
Crestron will debut the DM XiO Director, an enterprise-grade network appliance that serves as a centralized “virtual switcher,” for configuration, control and management of large-scale DM NVX Series AV networks. DM NVX Series is the their AV-over-IP system for sending 4K60, 4:4:4, and HDR video over standard 1Gb Ethernet.
The DM XiO Director emulates the functionality of a traditional hardware-based DigitalMedia matrix switcher, routing 4K60 streaming AV signals throughout a room, building, or campus. Three models are offered which support 80 (DM-XIO-DIR-80), 160 (DM-XIO-DIR-160) or unlimited (DM-XIO-DIR-ENT) endpoint devices. DM XiO Director can handle even the largest corporate enterprise, university, governmental, military, medical, transportation, sports, entertainment, hospitality, gaming or retail application.
Crestron says the DM XiO Director automatically discovers each DM NVX endpoint on the network, and allows each one to be assigned to a “domain” using a simple UI. A domain is simply a logical grouping of endpoints that operate together as a single switching entity, allowing individual rooms and other subsystems to be arranged and controlled independently. The DM XiO Director effectively eliminates the need for physical switchers in every room, replacing them with the virtual equivalent running on the AV network.
The DM XiO Director provides a web-based user interface to facilitate system configuration, signal routing and diagnostics of the AV network. Each domain and endpoint can be designated with a common name.
