Decision-Making When Profits and Ethics Collide
By Chuck Wilson
Executive Director, NSCA Our role as leaders is to convey to every employee in the company our philosophy and expectations on ethics, integrity and core values. It seems pretty straight forward and easy to explain and most times easy to put on paper. The difficult part is putting this into practice and having flawless execution by all.
Often in this business, conflicts over ethical practices and maximizing profits occur. Equally conflicting are the mixed messages business owners send to sales and operations staff. Most times it’s a matter of requiring better explanation and real world examples. Generally the confusion stems from a very short list of circumstances. Most conflicts I hear about occur with margins on product in the varying stages of competitive pressures.
Let’s pretend Jim is the most ethical business owner in our industry. Maybe we can simplify the message and teach ethics in the form of a question. What would Jim do? That is not to be confused with the more evasive, “What would Jim want me to do?” or, “Let’s not worry Jim about how we make money for him.” Using only the straight forward approach of “what would Jim do” leaves no room to rationalize the outcome. Let’s test ourselves with a sample of some recent ethics questions I’ve had…
Scenario A:
An integrator has an opportunity to do a system upgrade on a time and materials basis. The technician is unfamiliar with several programing functions and needs to research the proper integration methods. Is this billable time? What would Jim do?
Scenario B:
By the time the job is ready a few products have become obsolete. One option is to keep quiet and substitute with a cheaper yet adequate product from the same manufacturer without any documentation. The other option is sending in a request for substitution and notifying the owner of the need to substitute. Commissions are paid on profitability. What would Jim do?
Scenario C:
Jim’s company won the bid. His product suppliers don’t know that yet. Jim’s purchasing agent is ready to place the orders for the project. Is it fair to request relief pricing and concessions once the project is already in house? What would Jim do?
Scenario D:
Jim’s on vacation and left Bob in charge. Bob gets a bonus when productivity is greater than 80 percent of billable vs. available hours. Bob’s design staff isn’t busy this week. They could spend some unnecessary time on a couple jobs in backlog to allocate hours to a billable project, or do some non-billable on-line training that decreases his productivity ratios. Bob has to choose between right and wrong when his own paycheck is involved. What would Jim do?
Scenario E:
After years of hard work, low margins and building trust, Jim’s company has finally become the sole source AV technology provider at the largest university in his area. Now that the competitive bidding is done, his sales rep asks what the new pricing model should be. What would Jim do?
Just for kicks, run my list by your managers at the next meeting and see if the answers are all the same. Then use some of your own real life situations. You will find a lot of conflicting situations and temptations that occur in your business on a daily basis. At the end of that exercise I encourage you to be crystal clear on how you want the ethical situations to play out in your company. It’s the difference between writing the mission and living the mission.

Selling the Value: Part One
By Dawn Meade
rAVe Columnist In recent articles, I’ve talked about not blowing your competitive advantage, facing change and why you need to value your company’s knowledge properly to make money in the new knowledge economy. Since writing that, I’ve heard from several quarters, “Well, that’s just great… HOW do I do that??” Like so many other things in our industry, the answer is, “It depends.”
Every company and every situation is different, so there will be some variation in what works for you and what doesn’t. However, there are some ways to up the value of your company’s services and turn that value into increased revenue. First, actually UP the value of your company to the customer by getting your staff educated and — more importantly — certified. Credentials like education and certification play a large role in establishing reputation and competence in the eyes of customers — the things that provide value.
This should not be news to you. I’ve preached the importance of education and certification for as long as I’ve been in the industry — but it is never truer than it is today. After all, how do you differentiate between two candidates for a job? By looking at their education, their credentials and their experience. The same is true of differentiating between two vendors that you hire to do a job, so your customers are already interested in this information. Plus, more and more, the people hiring us aren’t the contractors or the CEOs but rather the IT managers or CTOs. These are people who have “grown up” in the IT and computer science world — a world with a strong emphasis on credentialing, where everyone who knows their stuff has their name followed by an alphabet soup of certs.
These people want to see CTS, CTS-D, C-EST and CTP+ after your name and the names of your staff. They understand CCNA, MCSE, A+, RITP and even LEED-AP. And when they see those letters, they know that you and your staff have a minimum baseline of technical knowledge in a certain area that they can trust in. That’s value. Now, can a person still have the knowledge without the alphabet soup? Of course. In some cases, those without credentials far exceed those with in sheer knowledge and experience… but that intangible, undefined knowledge isn’t easily shown on a resume, or an RFP response, or a marketing piece. In short, without the benefit of those letters to get your foot in the door, it doesn’t matter just how smart or experienced you are. Some integrators and manufacturers say they can’t afford the time or the fees associated with training/prep classes and the certification exams afterwards. But if you look at just how much work you are losing for not having them, you can’t afford NOT to pursue them… and you absolutely can’t sell your true value (by raising your rates to reflect your true skills and abilities) without them to back you up.
Once you have internally bolstered your own expertise and credentials by getting yourself and your staff certified in those areas most looked for by your clients, you need to make that expertise known. Yes, it may be an expense, but reprint business cards and marketing materials to highlight and emphasize your experience and certifications. Include the alphabet soup on your cards. If you have room, include the seals or logos for the credentials, perhaps on the back of your cards. Put out press releases in industry newsletters, local newspapers, and regional business papers when you or any of your staff earn a new credential. Let people know you have tangible proof of your company’s expertise. In short, you’ve earned the cred, now share it!
Continue sharing that expertise by becoming active in local tech councils and chamber of commerce or business networking groups. Offer to do a presentation on AV technology or a specific AV topic of interest to your average business owner as an Expert Speaker. Tailor your info to the audience and couch it in terms they will understand — like, “What Analog Sunset Is and Why It Will Impact YOUR Business.” (Obviously, make sure YOU understand your topic thoroughly first — which is why we go back to that Infocomm or NSCA or manufacturer education first, THEN offer to educate your potential client pool!) Offer to write a white paper or article for their newsletter or for free distribution to their membership. Keep an eye out for speaking and interview opportunities in your area where you can position yourself and your company as the expert voice on AV and technology topics. It takes some effort, but in no time, you can establish yourself as an expert in your field and then leverage that expertise in marketing your company directly to customers for specific projects.
These are a few tips to get you started on the path of Selling Your Value. Check back next time for more ways that you can turn your knowledge and expertise into more jobs, more opportunities and — everyone’s ultimate goal — more profit!

Milestone AV Holds Grand Opening of New Green HQ Milestone AV (the parent company of Chief, Sanus, Projecta, Procolor and Da-Lite) held a grand opening of its new 85,000 square-foot headquarters in Eden Prairie, Minn., on Friday, May 11. The event was open to invited community guests and the media and was followed by an open house for employees’ families.
The new space was designed with a focus on sustainability. The first step was to renovate instead of building new, rehabilitating a building with unique design features and great natural light. The building is undergoing the LEED Silver Certification process through the U.S. Green Building Council. The updated interior of the building incorporates a host of energy-efficient features and green building practices.
Some of the design elements in the renovated space include natural lighting for 95 percent of regularly occupied seated spaces and ENERGY STAR ratings for 95 percent of the equipment in the building. In an effort to reduce the overall environmental footprint, the building is located near four major highways as well as near the proposed Southwest Light Rail Transit line.
The company’s existing Minnesota facilities in Savage and Roseville will continue to operate as manufacturing and distribution centers. Including the new headquarters location, Milestone has 10 primary locations globally, including the three in Minnesota, plus facilities in Indiana, Ohio and Kansas, and international operations in The Netherlands, France, Hong Kong and China.

Share Article Back to Top NEC Display Solutions' Pierre Richer Adds CEO to Title Gary's Note: I have known Pierre for more than a dozen years, and I can safely say that he's one of the top five most creative people in AV. He is a visionary and has passion for this market that is unmatched in his position. He's perfect to steer the NEC ship (and, he's one of the best dressers in AV – no lie. That guy has the most creative shirts I have ever seen). Congrats, Pierre!
NEC Display just promoted President Pierre Richer to CEO, the company announced today. Richer has guided NEC to strong growth, product innovation and channel development over the last five years.
In his new role, Richer will continue to shape the vision of the company, which has enabled NEC to enhance its standing as a projector and LCD market leader, while capitalizing on the growing Digital Out-of-Home (DOOH) advertising market through VUKUNET.
“Pierre has continuously achieved company goals through his tremendous commitment, credibility and creativity, which have translated to a leading market position and revenue growth,” said Nick Akagi, president of NEC Display Solutions Worldwide. “His leadership has been instrumental in transforming NEC Display Solutions into a profitable and premier solutions company.”
“It is an honor to assume the CEO position at NEC Display Solutions, a company that accomplishes extraordinary results with quality employees and products,” Richer said. “I have worked with some very good companies throughout my career, but I have never heard customers and channel partners so often say that we are the best and easiest company to work with. It’s truly a testament to our people who live by our NEC motto of ‘achieving greatness’ by doing amazing things for those same customers and partners.”
Richer has been with NEC since 2003, where he was responsible for sales partner initiatives, marketing and service offerings, as well as introducing new revenue opportunities through the channel. He also played a key role in the successful merger of the projector and plasma business units with the desktop and large-screen LCD business units.

Share Article Back to Top Pacific Media Associates Expects Worldwide Projector Market to Top 11 Million Units in 2012 Pacific Media Associates (PMA) just released its latest quarterly forecast for the projector industry. Total worldwide shipments are expected to reach 11.3 million in 2012, nearly 20 percent higher than 2011. The projector forecast also includes a critical update of last quarter's groundbreaking forecast for solid-state illumination technologies such as laser projectors, hybrid laser/LED projectors and LED projectors. Other key aspects of PMA's latest forecast include a revised outlook for sales of ultra-short-throw projectors vs. medium-throw projectors, complete drill-down into historical and expected performance of 3LCD, DLP, LCOS and MOEMS-based projectors, and volume and revenue performance for the full range of high-end projectors in commercial and consumer markets.
"Ultra-short-throw projectors and medium-throw projectors will remain strong segments in the projector industry, and are expected to show better than 25 percent + combined annual growth though the forecast period," said Dr. William Coggshall, president of Pacific Media Associates. "But manufacturer strategies, government funding and price sensitivities will continue to influence the mix of these projectors around the world. For example, markets like the United States, Western Europe, Canada and Japan will move closer to a 50/50 mix of ultra-short-throw vs. medium-throw. However, Australia is expected to maintain its strong preference for ultra-short-throw over medium-throw while China will show a heavier mix of medium-throw in the near term."
In the market for solid-state projectors, LED-based projectors are expected to grow by nearly 60 percent in 2012 thanks in large part to pico projectors embedded in cameras and cell phones. Similarly strong growth is expected for hybrid projectors and laser-based projectors as they increasingly show up in classrooms, conference rooms, home theaters, and movie theaters/cinemas by late 2013.

Extron Starts XTP System Certification Program Extron has launched the XTP System Certification program for AV system designers and integrators. The program consists of online and instructor-led training for design and implementation of enterprise-wide digital systems based on Extron’s XTP CrossPoint Systems. XTP CrossPoint is a flexible signal switching and distribution system for local and remote devices that provides a completely integrated solution for multiple digital and analog formats. Achieving this manufacturer certification is an industry-recognized way to demonstrate acquired expertise related to digital AV applications.
"Since the introduction of digital AV technology, there’s been a need for in-depth training and instruction,” says Casey Hall, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Extron. “The XTP System Certification program provides a clear pathway for AV professionals to gain knowledge and experience with Extron digital AV products, and validates that understanding through testing and certification."
Once enrolled in the XTP System Certification program, an individual is required to successfully earn a passing score on an online exam for Digital AV Technologies. Study materials are available online to assist with test preparation. Then, the student attends concentrated instructor-led training and, depending on discipline, sits for one of two final exams: XTP Systems for Technicians – XTP-T or XTP Systems for Design Engineers – XTP-E.

Share Article Back to Top TFCinfo’s Latest Report Reveals Sony, Samsung, LG, Panasonic and Sharp As Most Considered Flat Panel Brands TFCinfo has announced the completion of its annual Flat Panel Brand Customer Perception and Preference Study 2012. In this year's installment, Sony, Samsung, LG, Panasonic and Sharp post the largest percentages in brand purchase consideration among professional buyers. This is very positive news for these brands as initial end user consideration is crucial.
While other brands may not be the most considered for purchase, they cannot be overlooked, and have been consistently improving year over year. NEC, Viewsonic and Vizio have improved upon their purchase consideration again this year across the board, making this is the third year in a row of improved purchase consideration for these brands.
Respondents were also asked which brand they would most want to purchase and if they would pay any additional money for the brand that they stated as superior over a brand that they consider to be just average. Some very interesting results are seen when looking at the cumulative number willing to pay more for their preferred brand.
“Sony comes in with the highest percentage willing to pay a premium for the brand at the $50+ and $100+ level. This goes along with the results that show Sony to be one of the most favored brands. Nearly one-third of those that claim Sony to be their preferred brand state they would be willing to pay $150 or more for the brand,” says Tanya Lippke, TFCinfo director of survey market research. “Samsung’s average price premium results are really quite interesting. On one hand the premium given for the brand fits with their high picture and quality ratings they are receiving, but the brand is also viewed as economical by end users. This is especially great news for Samsung, an affordable display with a great picture quality can pose a threat to many brands, this has helped Samsung with their leading market-share.”
Many brands posted great scores this year, it is especially positive if these brands can take this consideration and turn it into an actual purchase. In order to do this, consumers must also have a clear understanding as to what your brand offers in correlation to the purchasing factors that are most important to them, and this report reveals what messages the major brands are delivering and how these perceptions affect them in the market-place.
TFCinfo's Flat Panel Brand Customer Perception and Preference Study 2012 examines end user perceptions of flat panel brands and features, analyzing price sensitivities and detailed competitive brand profiles.

Grund Audio Designs Debuts New Subwoofer for Commercial Applications Grund Audio Designs has just announced the new GT-LPB-24C subwoofer. With a power rating of 800 watts RMS, it's a high-power, low-profile sub bass system that is actually for sound reinforcement applications where small format point source or line array loudspeaker systems are deployed. Because the GT-LPB-24C is comprised of two 12-inch, low-frequency transducers, this subwoofer has a frequency range that extends from 40 Hz through 250 Hz. As a result, according to Grund, the subwoofer has the ability to provide both the low-end support characteristic of a sub bass system, as well as the fundamental frequencies (80 Hz to 250 Hz) that are frequently diminished in smaller format point source or line array loudspeaker enclosures.
The GT-LPB-24C subwoofer is 12.38 x 28.75 x 18.5 inches (H x W x D) and works in both fixed and portable SR applications. Full specs are here: http://www.grundorf.com/index.php?Type=SOUN&Application=GTS&Model=GT-LPB-24C

With this addition, Kramer now offers a family of scalers that meets any serial digital scaling need through 3G SDI. Both scalers convert the incoming serial digital signal to one of several selectable computer graphics video, standard definition or high definition video resolutions and output them via a DVI connector for the VP-471 and via a 15-pin HD connector for the VP-473. In addition, the VP-471 de-embeds the audio as either a S/PDIF signal or as an unbalanced stereo audio signal on RCA connectors while both the VP-471 and the VP-473 also de-embed the audio to unbalanced stereo audio on RCA connectors.
The VP-471 and VP-473 have one SDI input and one SDI looping output on BNC connectors to accept an SD, HD or 3G SDI signal. They automatically detect the incoming signal format and supported formats include SMPTE standards 259M, 292M, and 424M with a maximum data rate of 3Gbps.

Lightware to Debut Hybrid Matrix Calling this analog and digital matrix a Hybrid Router, Lightware's new 25G is touted as not only a matrix, but also "a complete signal architecture": a cloud that supports eight media layers — video, audio, Ethernet, USB KVM, USB 2.0, IR, RS-232 and CEC channels. All layers are supported by 25G Hybrid signal management; inside the cloud all the layers are independent for switching and extending all signal layers separately.
The 25G Hybrid signal architecture allows video, audio and media layers to be transmitted over a single fiber or one CAT5 cable so one switcher supports all eight media layers. The 25G Hybrid Matrix has 160 inputs and 160 outputs and is spec'd at a total throughput of 4TB per second. It offers 25 gigabits-per-second data rate switching for transporting next generation video signals, such as HDMI 1.4 and DisplayPort 1.2, and handling all future video and audio standards, including 4K resolution and stereo 3D formats.
Each video port is equipped with a separate audio input and output connector, forming a 320×320 S/P/DIF crosspoint switch. It manages stereo and multichannel audio as well as high bitrate formats like Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio. Optional multi-channel to stereo downmixing is available.
The product won't be released until InfoComm so there are no specific specs yet. But, when they launch, details will be here: http://lightwareusa.com/products/by-function/modular-matrix-frames |
